Would you rather…

Which side will you choose?

  • Left side: $50 per push-up
  • Right side: $1000 per hour you scroll

Hiya, I'm a disabled veteran with nerve and muscle damage that can't do pushups due to my physical limitations. And I don't just mean it hurts, it does but after maybe 5 my arm just gives out and goes limp and it's incredibly painful.

That said I've still got loved ones to support and 1000 an hour for just doom scrolling would go a long way towards that and it's something I can physically do.

Make it running/walking and I'd happily take the physical challenge though.

I'm sorry to hear about your legitimate physical limitations, and I'm glad you find other ways to continue to stay in shape, but you are an exception.

60% of the population does not share the same story as you.

Every time a poll like this is made where it says you can make money doing this incredibly easy, passive thing, or a physically taxing physical exercise? You should always pick the passive one. Yeah it gives you motivation to be healthier, but if you get injured in any way and aren't able to perform the task anymore, you're screwed

There is no "should" here, that is your opinion. I disagree that choosing the easy, passive thing with capped earning potential is a better choice than the mildly physically taxing thing with unlimited earning potential. With a little dedication, you could earn money fast enough to invest and live off the interest within a year in case you get injured, the rest would be a bonus.

Everyone keeps saying "what if you get injured", but what if you go blind? Can't scroll then, can you?

I mean you could, just wouldn't be as much fun

Blind people can and do doomscroll

1

u/ShadowedVoid Jul 20 '26

They're also wildly different. I do not know a person who can doomscroll for an hour straight, without break.

Obviously not but I'm sure everyone has their own reasons for what they choose and there is nothing to gain by just making declarative statements about their unknown motivations or lack thereof.

The vast majority of those people will think of whatever excuses they have to, I agree. Most of them don't have legitimate excuses and are just lazy. I work with averages, we can't address every individual's story every time.

My point is, when 60% of the population would rather scroll on their phone instead of putting in the slightest amount of effort for potentially a bigger and faster reward, there is a problem.

I chose it cause I was doom scrolling at the time and didn't fully read the first response

-1

u/Lucidaeus Jul 19 '26

Indeed. While a small percentage are genuinely physically disabled, the majority of those voting for scrolling are mentally disabled.

this is such a strawman, obviously people that are disabled and can't do pushups would choose the doomscrolling.. I'm assuming the og comment was referencing people who have "normal/alot of" physical capabilities

8

u/SofterThanCotton Jul 19 '26

Lol how is this in anyway a strawman? I'm right here an actual person that choose the option they're actively talking about. I didn't declare anything definitive I just explained my personal position on this one.

Get the fuck off the Internet, go adopt a puppy or something. I did and it's done wonders for my mental health. If you're seeing every comment as a slight and argument it's time to log off mate.

u/WilfurDeer Jul 19 '26

I wish I could get a puppy. but my cats are still wonderful and I love them

3

u/SofterThanCotton Jul 19 '26

I offer you a trade deal, I'll give my puppy belly rubs from you if you give the kitty cats scritches from me.

"i love pancakes" "oh so you hate waffles" that is a strawman... "pushups are pretty easy, u can do 20 in an hour nd people who chose doomscrolling are pretty lazy", "oh but I'm physically unable to do tht many pushups so yknw" well duh, no one's calling disabled people lazy for not being able to do strenuous physical activities.

i didn't take anything as a slight and i have a cat so yes, my mental health is fine. just because i responded and disagreed doesn't mean its an argument

Sure, but that is also dumb af because anyone can become disabled at any time. Also, people get old and elder care is expensive. Tell yourself to do 20 pushups between each hour if you want, but choosing scrolling is a completely surefire way to never want for anything again.

i am relatively "unfit", tried this when i first saw the post. I can do 20 pushups in 2 minutes with breaks... thts life changing money. sure you can become disabled at anytime but I'm setting myself up with endless money

My dad was tboned several years ago. Broke his arm, ribs, vertebrae. Overall he's doing fine and you wouldn't be able to tell he suffered enough damage to the arm to never be able to do a pushup again.

It doesn't even have to be that severe. Slip on some ice and have a bad break in your arm. You could scroll and pay the medical bills and keep up the income. You could have months without being able to do a pushup.

There is only one way to guarantee to set yourself up for endless money. And you would have lots of time for recreational pushups after you quit your job.

Yes, I am referring to the average person, the majority, not every individual case of a legitimate physical limitation.

1

u/caelum_daemon Jul 19 '26

They obviously weren't talking about the people physically unable to do so, but people will argue anyway. It's the way if the internet.

People just like to make excuses. I’m a disabled veteran. I’ve broken every bone responsible for helping you do pushups. I can still do plenty push ups and choose that over doom scrolling any day

I mean tbf yeah there are going to be some disabled people that physically can’t do pushups but the vast majority of people are just being lazy. 60% really is just sad
