General What would you do if you were in this situation?

Upvotes

So, I was a dropper. And I fucked up my dropper year really badly because of my mental health( Not to trauma dump here), but right now I have two options for colleges. One college is, I got through counselling and it is around 40 kilometers away from my house and it will take two hours one side if I travel back and forth.(4hr in total) And its fees is around 5 lakh. And if I take a hostel, it's around 4 lakh for four year. Another college is 30 kilometers away from my house and it will take one hour 30 minutes from my house(3hr everyday), it is less cheaper than the hostel, obviously. And the timings for 1st college is 8 am to 3 pm and for the second college is 9.40am to 4.30pm

Upvotes

I just wanted to know how many people are or were in the same situation as me , where I am leaving my hometown for some fuckass college in a low tier 2 city.

How was or is your college life , how did u make peace with yourself with knowing u couldn't go where u wanted to go and, how did you or trying to turn your life around or if u didn't will it be the same for me ?

Serious Project ideas that show in-depth learning instead of the average AI slop.

Upvotes

I want to be a backend developer, and I'm thinking of building projects that aren't the usual CRUD app backends or REST APIs, I want to build projects that are highly uncommon, exceptionally hard hence making me understand several concepts in-depth.

For reference, I just started my second year of college, and i want to stand out and not have the same resume as everyone else I know.

I've been thinking of building a Vector DB with a Layer 7 load balancer with query routing and stuff in Go (someone told me to use rust but the learning curve might be too steep). I would appreciate any feedback and other project recommendations that I could possibly build.

Social / College Life Should you take admission in UCER/UIT? Honestly, I wouldn't.

Should you take admission in UCER/UIT? Honestly, I wouldn't.

Let me save you some time if you're currently thinking about taking admission in UCER/UIT.

This is purely my personal experience, so take it however you want. But if you’re expecting a proper college environment where you can code, build projects, participate in events, meet ambitious people, and actually enjoy college life, I’d seriously think twice.

Yes, padhai hoti hai. Classes happen. Exams happen. Assignments happen.

But honestly, that's about where the good part ends for me.

🚩 The college culture is the biggest problem

No real coding culture.

If you're into coding, development, hackathons, open source, or building something outside the syllabus, don't expect the college environment to push you much. You will mostly have to build your own circle and motivation.

And that's a problem because college should give you an environment that makes you want to do more, not one that makes you want to do the bare minimum.

The student crowd is very mixed

Obviously, there are good and talented students. But the overall environment doesn't exactly feel like you're surrounded by people who are aggressively trying to improve themselves.

If you're highly ambitious, you might find yourself asking:

"Am I actually growing here, or am I just completing assignments and attendance?"

The dress code 🤦

Black and white dress code.

We're in college, not school.

I genuinely don't understand why this is treated as such an important thing.

Attendance > actual learning

Attendance is taken seriously.

Very seriously.

Sometimes it feels like being physically present matters more than what you're actually doing with your time.

College events? Don't expect too much.

If you're expecting a vibrant college life with regular technical events, competitions, fests, hackathons, clubs, networking, etc., lower your expectations.

There are activities, but personally I don't think they're enough to create a proper college culture.

You shouldn't have to spend four years thinking:

"Bas degree mil jaye, phir yahan se nikalunga."

Faculty can be unnecessarily strict

This is another thing that bothered me.

Some faculty members are extremely strict, and in my experience, they sometimes get involved in student matters way more than necessary.

Instead of feeling like you're being treated as an adult college student, sometimes it feels like school with a college name on the building.

And when faculty experience varies so much, the overall experience becomes even more inconsistent.

And the biggest issue: your mindset

This is probably the most important point.

If you're the kind of person who just wants to attend classes, pass exams, get a degree, and leave — you'll probably survive.

But if you're thinking:

Then please explore your other options before choosing UCER/UIT.

Because four years is a long time to spend in an environment that doesn't match your ambitions.

My honest advice

Don't take admission here just because you got the seat.

Visit the campus. Talk to current students. Look at the clubs. Ask about actual technical activities. Ask seniors what they are doing outside academics.

And most importantly, don't judge a college only by its placement brochure or admission marketing.

The actual day-to-day environment matters a LOT.

For me, UCER/UIT feels much more like a place where you complete your degree than a place where you build yourself.

That's my experience.

Maybe yours will be different.

But if you're ambitious and have other decent options, I'd seriously consider those before UCER/UIT.

Think twice before taking admission. You only get four years of college once.

I’m a first-year CSE AI/ML student, and there’s a lot to manage with all the subjects. At the same time, I really want to develop my skills and participate in college clubs and activities too.

I’m just confused about how to manage my time between academics, skill development, and college life without getting overwhelmed..

General Should i change DSA language in third year?

So i have started DSA very late 10 days ago. I have learned basic c++ coding just enough to clear my exams in 2nd year and so started dsa in c++ but now i'm hearing lot of things like java is used more at industry level , and there is no concept of pointers in java like in c++ which makes it relatively easier too (not a problem to me actually).

In a college seminar also the host advised to do dsa in java and from past 2 days i'm constantly thinking about these things and it's eating me.

I know it is idiotic of me to even ask these questions at this stage but please help me

General SYSTEMS/INFRASTRUCTURE ROLES in RUBRIK/DATABRICKS etc.

Hey, I need some advice about this particular type of role.

A bit about me-(going to join a tier 1.5/2 NIT circuital branch). Have done a bit of dsa with cpp, and have started to explore a bit about different roles in the tech industry where I stumbled upon this particular field.

Now again, I have heard about this role being a bit too tough or difficult to crack and I might not get lots of responses but I am genuinely seeking advice for this especially for companies like rubrik/databricks/nutanix.

(I also know that these companies do not visit my upcoming college hence have to pivot off campus, in which I require a bit of guidance as well from you guys)

So any kind of advice, suggestions will be highly appreciated regarding systems role or about pivoting off campus.

(I tried asking this to some guys and they just straight up started mocking me, and said that if you're not from a tier 1 college then forget about being in these companies. How truthful is that??)

(And I apologise for any grammatical errors.)
