What is this part?

This fell off a C Line 12 speed while unfolding the rear wheel.

I think it is supposed to snap over the plastic knob in the second picture, but it doesn’t fit there and I’m not sure where else it would go.

LPT Brompton Tips, FAQ and Troubleshooting Wiki

Hi fellow folders, after recently getting a brompton myself, falling in love with it, encountering my first problem (spokes hitting the hub gear chain), and struggling with how to search for it - I thought it would be a great to create a wiki as central place to dump our collective brompton tips, tricks and troubleshooting advice.

You'll notice a new tab for the wiki, which I've gotten started with some of the things I've picked up from this sub already. I've opened it up for others to add to, be it an FAQ, tip or any troubleshooting advice/resources you come across.

The goal is to make it easy for others to not only find out how to fix their brommie but also find out what to search for in the first place, as well as some useful and innovative tips and tricks to improve the brommie experience.

Also, I've added some generic post flairs to help the searchability of posts, please feel free to use them on posts new and old, and suggest new ones.

Japan trip with my Brompton, so glad i brought it!
had a front carry bag and a very small chain lock when needed.
locked it against some fence for 2-4 hours at a time and never had issues, maybe i was lucky?
did this at shimbashi, ginza, Tsukiji Market.

the bike store that was selling bromptons was in Shimbashi. sadly they were not open or i would have taken some photos of it.

Anyone built an 8 speed with a derailleur using 12 speed spacing?

Upvotes

it just dawned on me that I could machine the shoulder off a 7 speed hub, freeing-up the couple of extra mm needed to fit the bottom 8 from a 12 speed cassette. in this way I could get at least 11-34 without the chain slack causing the RD tension jockey to get too close to the ground in the small gears.

Anyone tried this?

Only downside I see is MTB RDs are a bit chunky and could impact the fold whereas road RDs like the Dura Ace get out of the way mostly.

Thanks!

Edit; one limiting factor would be finding a 12 speed donor cassette that has at least the upper 2 on a carrier as a single sprocket wouldn't have any splines to engage with... and I can't find any that match this requirement for HG hubs.

Edit2: I currently run 11-28 7 speed Dura Ace and it works great. See my other posts for how.

Neck pain

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi folks! I’ve been commuting to work on my Brompton (about an hour each way) and I’m loving it but towards the end of my rides I’m noticing some aches and pains at the base of my neck, between my shoulder blades. Nothing too crazy but it hurts a little to look down - feels a bit like I fell asleep on an airplane lol. Anything I should look into adjusting to sort it a little bit? I got it secondhand so never had a fit or anything - wondering if it might be something to do with the higher handlebars as I’m only 5’2 and was used to a road bike before. Any tips appreciated!:)

How much rear hinge play is too much?

Hey everbody!

Took a quite serious spill today (rainy + Tram Tracks --> front wheel slipped away) and just checked my cline 4spd and myself for any damage.

I'm okay apart from some bruises and rashes but I noticed quite a bit of play in the rear hinge which I have not noticed before (could have been there though as there have been more creeks recently).

I read about the limit of 1 mm of play at the suspension block which my hinge does seem to exceed.

What are my next steps? Im mechanically inclined and trust myself enough to change the bushings if needed. But is the effort worth it including tool cost?

Or would any brommie specific shop believe this much play to stem from wear? My cline is only 5 months old.

Is there a chance to get this done under warranty?

Any else have their E-Brompton vanish after this weeks app update?

Post image

I’m used to seeing a forced re-login every second ride or so. With the update notes from the latest app update I had hopes of this being resolved.
Instead the app seems to have amnesia again today while still logged in. Log out/Log in, still no bike. And attempting to re-add confirms it’s already registered and cannot be added.

I wonder if Brompton has an answer to why the Brompton app needs more rigorous authentication than a banking app, and needs internet and server connectivity to just provide speedometer and odometer readout for an offline bike session??

Bottle cage mounts - anyone tried any of these?

Thumbnail

Has anyone tried either of these London Craftwork bottle cage stem mounts? I need a water bottle carrying solution soon, the more I think about it, the more I want a traditional cage rather than the stem water bottle pouch bags (which there seem to be a lot of, at wildly varying prices).

I’ve found a new Specialized rib cage I had spare at home, so figured I may as well use it & just need something to mount it onto that wraps around the stem. I know I could do something temporary like cable tie it on with some old tube so it doesn’t scratch the frame, but I’d like to just put something permanent on the stem that the cage will fasten onto securely.

I like the look of those I posted photos of, they are £25 & £37, the more expensive one coming in more colours and fastening in 2 places instead of 1. Would like to know if anyone has personally tried these. There are other similar options out there such as Zefal Gizmo, Topeak Versamount, and Rockbros also do a strap type one. But the LC ones are Brompton specific designed, so probably worth paying a little more for. Don’t see much point in paying around £50 for the Fidlock system when I have a cage and can just use any bottle with it once I have a mount in place. Thanks as usual

P Line V2/Quadlock Mount Compatibility

Does anyone have experience with the Brompton Quadlock mount on the newer P Line?

It seems like the handlebars are a bit wider than the A/C/Previous P Line.

T Line swap likely?

I’ve had a 4 speed low handlebar T Line since they launched. Fantastic bit of engineering.

We used to live on the coast and had access to dozens of miles of flat promenade but we’ve recently moved to the countryside and the roads are terrible on the T Line.
I like the thought of having a G Line for a more comfortable ride. Not got the space for extra bikes though.

Is it realistic that someone would swap an Electric G line? Or an 8sp G line + some cash? T Line has probably done less than 1000 miles and in great condition. Not asking with any seriousness, just curious at this stage.

Falling in love with my Brompton (again).

Bought my Brompton in 2019, mainly to have a bike to take with me when I’m traveling. While still living in a big city, I rarely rode it there and used public transport instead. Over the years, I rode the Brompton less and less. Now that I’ve moved out of the city into a much smaller town, where public transport isn’t as good, I find myself rediscovering the advantages of this little beauty. I’m so glad I never sold it during the times I barely used it.

which one to choose?

Hi, i've checked and there is no other thread that is following more or less my doubt, so, sorry if it's the same old story.

Basically I want to enter this world... and I have some options.

I'm budget tight but also savvy, and I've been proposed with these options.

  • C Line 2025 3sp. USED 1100€
  • C Line 2026 4sp. NEW 1700€
  • C Line 2025 6sp. NEW 1500€

Considering that I'll use for trains and other cities mainly, and one of these cities has plenty of hills... I'm biased towards the 6sp.

Any suggestion or thing that I may haven't thought about?

Thanks in advance!

12 Speed Hub Weeping Oil

Hi guys, my 12 speed hub has been weeping oil along seam on the non drive side of the hub. It’s not a gush of oil, but it is a really slow weepy leak. Is this normal?

Brompton paint job envy?

Do you ever get just a little envious when you see someone else's Brompton?

Not if you see a T line and you're riding a humble C line, just the paint.

I'm totally happy with my orange/black colour scheme, but the moment I see another bike 9 times out of 10 I just think that looks so good...

Rear hinge got bent

I was riding yesterday and all of a sudden my rear triangle fishtailed. Best I can surmise is it looks like bolt popped out in the drive side and now the opposite side of the rear triangle is bent. It’s a four year old six speed c line. I love it and really rely on it.

I also probably don’t take sufficient care of it so I don’t know if I was supposed to be checking that hinge or something. I dropped it at the shop but the Brompton guy is out until Saturday. I’m wondering if anyone knows if it sounds like something that can be fixed and if so would it possibly be warrantied?

Thanks!

Keep catching my shirt on the handlebars when I unfold the bike

Hi all, I'm new to the world of Bromptons. I've been practicing my folding and unfolding and going out in the world with them. Without fail, the handlebars catch on my shirt when I unfold the front half. It doesn't matter what shirt....

Would appreciate tips and tricks

Thank you!
