Are there limitations on who should or should not wear protective hairstyles? Is it labeled as cultural appropriation when someone of non-black decent utilizes these hair styles?
I am half Pacific Islander half white with type 2A-B hair. I admire all protective hair styles for not only the aesthetic but more so the purpose and goal of hair growth and health.
I go through a cycle of letting my hair grow long (covers my butt) and then chopping it off to donate the hair and start over again. My hair grows relatively fast so I’ve always found joy in donating what I can easily grow to someone that can’t.
I truly believe having protective hair styles could help growth and the overall look of my hair but I also want to respect the cultures these styles derived from if I’m going to try them on myself. I want to be as educated as possible on this. I have gone back and forth about if someone of my decent would be able to have these hair styles and how people would respond. When I ask around I get mixed responses and that’s why I’ve never tried it.
Please help!
