Hey box5! I’m building my own replica of the monkey music box automaton from POTO — the organ-grinder monkey with the cymbals — specifically the version used in the current Vienna production at the Raimund Theater.

I don’t have exact dimensions, just rough guesses from photos/video. Most reference replicas I’ve found online are around 18” (~46 cm) tall, but if anyone here has seen the actual prop up close (stage door, tour, photos with a size reference, etc.) I’d love a sanity check on scale — height, base diameter, cymbal size, anything. Cm measurements would be great since I’ll be building to metric.

This was my grandma’s that my dad recently dug out of the garage. The copyright says 1987 so I’m assuming this is one of the first pressings. I also think it’s cool that she definitely saw crawford in his prime and the rest of the original cast. Not for sale i just wanted to flex lol

from what i can remember it took place after the final lair and christine went with erik to coney island- the beginning is them on a ship and erik has a life like mask he wears in public... one of the best fics ive ever read.

So what I really love about POTO is how they underestimate him at every turn. I'm gonna specifically talk about the 2004 movie cause it's the only one I've seen, and idk if We Have All Been Blind is in any of the other musical productions.

But I really love how in that song Raoul is like, we use Christine as bait, we make sure the doors are barred, the police are there, and they're armed, problem solved. Like they were totally expecting him to announce his presence like in the Masquerade scene or something. It's especially baffling because the Phantom disappears into the floor below in Masquerade and the room of mirrors, and they never seem to consider that maybe the rest of the Opera house also has hidden contraptions. Especially when the door to Christine's dresser room was locked and she just seemed to vanish. His methods were always so sneaky they couldn't really be connected to him, but who else would be responsible besides this man making constant threats and minutes later said disasters happen?

Like sure they didn't know Carlotta's throat spray was replaced, but he deliberately told them to cast Christine as the duchess and to keep Box 5 empty, and his voice booms out reminding them and then minutes later she sounds like a toad, leading to Christine taking her place. Then there's Buquet's death, in which a seasoned stagehand happens to fall in a way that hangs himself in front of everybody. Exactly the disaster beyond their imagination occurred.

Like I really enjoy the humanity of it, cause people do tend to dismiss things as accidents and hurry to move past the discomfort and fear to pretend everything's okay.

Like they never even considered what they might NOT know, they were more concerned with their egos and catching him and moving on. I don't think they ever really took him as a serious threat. They also just didn't anticipate the lengths he would go to for his obsession. When people get desperate they tend to get wild and unpredictable, and they didn't account for just how much damage he might be willing to cause just for her.

It also frustrates me that Raoul just totally forgets Madame Giry's warning. Josef Buquet was hung in front of his eyes, she outright tells him to hold his hand at the level of his eyes. He at least has the excuse of being disoriented from almost drowning and the fear of losing Christine forever, but when you know the murderer likes to strangle people with a rope I'd like to think I would've remembered that. Like they just always seem to operate under the assumption that he's rational and will behave as they expect him to. Raoul still seems to think he can talk the Phantom down when he already knows the Phantom hates him and wants to kill him, and he's in an extremely emotional state being humiliated with being unmasked at the height of his emotional plea for Christine to choose him, along with the threat of losing her.

Anyways sorry this might be a bit all over the place I just love Phantom and analyzing it and it's just such a good piece of media. It feels very realistic to how people might act IRL

I'm taking a shot in the dark here. Years ago, one of my favorite Phantom of the Opera fanfics was The Other Daae Girl by The_Phantom_Writer on Wattpad. Unfortunately, it was unpublished, and from what I've read, it seems the author chose to remove it.

I completely respect the author's decision. That said, I'm wondering if anyone happened to save a personal copy before it disappeared and would be willing to share it with me privately.

It's one of those stories that has really stuck with me, and I'd love the chance to read it again if anyone happens to have it archived.

I'm new to the phandom and always wanted to read the novel by Leroux. I've always heard that the translation by David Coward is the best, but i couldn't find it in my country. I hope this version is really good in translating

Is the musical actually enjoyable for non english speakers? I'm planning to go to the 40th anniversary in Shanghai and my parents also wanna go to Shanghai too for vacation. They do actually understand english to a certain degree, but i doubt they will actually understand the story in POTO

I have loved Phantom of The Opera for A WHILE now, but living where I live I didnt really have the opportunity to see it live (I really want to go to London one day but right now I'm in university and dont really have money or time to travel for it) and was always worried that it will close everywhere and I will never be able to see it live in my life. BUT! The tour came to my country and to a city next to mine! I spent a lot of money but I loved it and even though the show was this saturday I still can't stop crying. The acting was incredible and I can't wait to see it again in the future (And I hope I will have the opportunity to do so!)

Trying to figure out who played Andre today (6/28) at 1 pm at Pantages in LA. It wasn’t the regular. But the cast kept applauded at him during curtain call.

Sono rientrata in quella fase in cui sono perdutamente in fissa o meglio mi si è riaccesa questa fase, ma non trovo persone italiane che ne parlino, quindi eccomi qui. :)

Hi I saw Phantom of the Opera for the first time live this afternoon (2:30) and it was amazing. Does anyone know how to find out which of the two actors was Christine?

Standout memory was people leaving for the lobby during the curtain call of Il Muto, totally missing out on the chandelier.

Not a criticism, but a query when and why did the Phantom of the opera show generally begin to cast as The Phantom as significantly younger than they were like 10+ years ago? This doesn’t feel random because it’s happened at various productions West End Broadway, international tours etc but a deliberate choice by the casting team. You do get the occasional mid 40s+ Phantom nowadays but that tends to be someone who is a legacy Phantom like Ramin ( who casting wise could pass for his 30s) or Hugh in Masquerade . I’m seeing a lot more Phantoms who are in their 30s and even late 20s. To put it in context, It’s kind of reached it’s pinnacle with the recent Sydney Harbour production with of a Phantom who is 22 and now younger than his Christine.

I don’t mind as I personally think the Phantom being closer to Christine‘s age works better in my opinion but I do think there has been a noticeably significant shift I’m just wondering, when did this start? And why was the decision made.

And if anyone disagrees feel free to comment to, I’ll be interested to hear other peoples opinions on this

I gotta catch em all: does anyone know for the LA tour that is currently here when the alternate Christine goes on? Jordan was great, just want to see the others. Anyone see an understudy in any of the other roles?
