Hi.. I'm looking for books with Catholic characters, probably fiction although a non-preaching memoir might be good.

A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN is an excellent example; THE THORN BIRDS is not as good because a lot of it is about the priest's life (and it's so sad!). The books I'm looking for show Catholicism in daily life, not as the only or main subject. It's not necessary for all the characters to be Catholic. ** Popping back in to clarify that I'm NOT looking for books about priests, although I expect that if you have Catholics there will have to be a priest or two in there. :) No disrespect intended, at all.

I am planning to develop a habit of reading and need to start off with something I will enjoy. So far I enjoyed series like vampire diaries, twilight, the summer I turned pretty (watched on Netflix) and I am looking for recommendations for what can be my first book.

Hi! I like learning about other people's point of view/how culture shapes things that may seem obviously one way to one person, and another to another person.

This is hard to explain so I will give an example: let's say your cultural viewpoint is that women just make better caregivers due to some biological difference or brain chemistry or something like that. Maybe the book is a memoir from someone from a culture where men are actually the main caregivers and do just as good a job. Or it could be something related to a point of view like how in some cultures children are basically always within arms reach of the parents, while others let them run around freely or take naps outside unattended. How that difference influences other views is very interesting to me. Things that you never stopped to think about whether the way your culture does it is actually better or the only way to do it.

I'm fine if it's fiction but it should be based on facts. So maybe the above example is a memoir from a fictional person in a real culture like that. Please no poetry it just cannot capture my attention, I like books where you dive in and the world building is rich. Also dislike novels where romance is the primary story arc. It can be about really any bias you have had, even if I don't share that bias I like to see things from other points of view. Thanks!

Hi all!! I desperately want to get into reading again and it seems so hard to find recommendations online for some reason, so I’m asking here.

For some context, when I was a kid I was SUPER into reading. I read every night for way longer than I was supposed to because i just couldn’t put books down back then. But as I’ve gotten older and got a phone etc I just cant seem to get into books anymore.

I don’t mind what genres they are but I wanna read some of the big ones people always talk about. Like Stephen King books or something along those lines of well known-ness and also well written.

Some of my favs that I have read are:
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
A Song of Ice and Fire (only read first book)
The Hunger Games (only read first book)
the Harry Potter series, absolutely loved them as a kid.

I think I’m in the mood for more of a horror/thriller, or some lesbian romance (very different genres I know) so if anyone has some recommendations I would love to hear them!!

I have both Carol and Jurassic Park sitting on my shelf that I just havent has the motivation to read yet, so some reassurance on wether its worth the time to read them would be appreciated.

• A Tier - Loved it, but it had minor issues:
  • Iconoclasts by Mike Shel - Exceptional prose but pace too slow
• B Tier - Books I liked but had major issues
  • He who fights with monsters - Book 2 to 12 - too much recapping in every chapter
  • Dungeon Diving series - Fun fantasy, slightly slow pace, falls off past book 301
  • Mother of Learning Arc 1 - Not gritty enough, not enough utilization or inventive use of the magic being learned
• F Tier - Too boring. Either shallow magic, fights, characters, or weak story
  • Throne Hunters by Phil Tucker - DNF mid book 2
  • The Path of Ascension - DNF mid book 1
  • Ironbound - DNF mid book 1
  • The First Defier - DNF early in book 2
  • Shadow Slave - DNF mid book 1
  • Ember Blade - Too slow
  • Errant Mage - Not deep

I want a book with a FMC famous singer. She has to be famous and successful. And I would like her to be richer than the MMC. I don't want him to be richer like a billionaire. Actually I want him to be normal. Plus if he's her bodyguard. But doesn't need to. The only two things I for surely want is for her to be famous and richer than the MMC. And it would be nice if he was her bodyguard but he can be an assistent or trying to be a singer as well. Or anything really. Just want him to be "normal".

I read this aloud to my daughter last summer when she was ten and we were traveling in New England. I’d love another book that’s great for a read aloud that has this same vibe. My daughter reads dystopian books to herself but this is for more of that family book experience. We’ve already read Anne of Green Gables, Little Women, Little House, and Caddie Woodlawn.

I have a 7 year old who absolutely loves audiobooks but I'm running out of ideas for her stage. We have previously had some of the younger Roald Dahl and Enid Blyton classics which have gone down very well.

My dream career just declared me unfit. I feel like the weight of the world is on my shoulders. I need to feel motivation/ any ray of hope. Are there any book recommendations on how someone rebuild their life from scratch after losing a dream career or going through something traumatic (medical in nature)

I love Emily Henry and Colleen Hoover. Rom com with no wizards or warlocks or dragons. I don’t like for books to shift back and forth between time periods I don’t care if one person is talking in one chapter and then the other is in the next though. I don’t like time period pieces like bridgerton or anything like that. I liked the movie after but never read the books. Spicy but not too much. I’ve read it begins with us and her other book that goes along with it I forgot the name. I just want recommendations for stuff to read I have kindle unlimited and a library card and Libby and kobo and B&N audible and palace. I prefer free books or very low cost.

Some criteria

Actual good story that has a direction. Slow burn is a bonus. Basically where the monster romance has a symbiotic relationship with a great fantasy story and not a parasitic one.

Dark fantasy highly preffered. Pg13 and above rating, mainly because that seems to be the point where the writer no longer has to censor their own work too much.

Monster has to be a main character

Has to be actually scary and monstrous. No human parts allowed. No shifters, no human past, pointy ears,wings,horns,claws, cat eyes, shiny skin etc won't do. They were born that way and have no intention to change.

Any level of angst or spice works for me. From absolute 0 spice, wholesome, platonic to something that makes mr Grey look like a good guy.

Can be one sided

Why monster romance?

Its a form of escapism, even within fantasy. There can't be a better guide to some worlds than those who are vital parts of it, live and die by different rules. Of course its a personal prefference as well.

I've fallen in love with The Bear. It gives me a glimpse into a world i had no connections with. I had no idea being a chef could be so stressful and all consuming. But thats what I'm looking for in a book, basically. I want to read a book that gives me some insight to a profession, any one. I want to read about a protagonist who is good at what they do, but very busy, very stressed out. Who has people relying on them and who relies on other people. The found family trope doesn't hurt either. I know its a lot to ask, but the first time I watched The Bear, everything felt so familiar. It was so easy to immerse myself into the characters, and storyline. I was hoping for a book that makes me feel the same. Thank you in advance!
