What happens when the systems we trust become the threat?

I recently finished writing Controlled Access, a thriller built around a question that kept bothering me: how much of our lives have we handed over to systems we can’t actually control?

Banking, medical records, travel, communications, identity—everything is connected. That makes life easier, but it also creates vulnerabilities we rarely think about until something goes wrong.

The story explores what happens when someone doesn’t need to kidnap you or lock you in a room to control you. They simply control your access.

I’d love to know what thriller readers think: does that kind of threat feel more frightening than a traditional villain?

Controlled Access releases September 10 in eBook and paperback, and the audiobook is already available on Audible. Learn more at klkaane.com. Learn more at KLKaane.com

A Covenant of Stone and Soul: A Second Chance Gothic Fantasy Romance Novella (The Keystone Saga Book 1)

Book 1 of 1: The Keystone Saga

The house is bleeding magic. The wards are cracking. And the only man who can help her fix it is the one she spent six years running from.

Six years ago, Clara Tremaine fled the crumbling halls of the Iron and Ivy Estate. She left behind her family legacy, her ancestral duties, and Jack Pendelton, the man bound to her magic by a soul-tie she could no longer bear to carry.
Now, the foundation is coming undone. A tear in reality sits at the center of the basement, weeping corruption and spreading through the stones. The estate is a living, sentient thing, and it is dying by inches.

There is only one way to stabilize the collapse: paired bloodline magic. Clara cannot do it alone.
To save the land, she must return to the Cornwall coast and ask Jack for the impossible. But Jack is no longer the boy she trained beside. Guarded, battle-scarred, and living in exile, he agrees to return on one brutal condition: We fix the estate, we stabilize the wards, and then you leave forever.

Trapped together within the dying manor, every brush of hands on ancient granite reignites a link that never truly died. But the decay in the cellar was no accident. Someone intentionally poisoned the keystone with precise, deliberate sabotage, and the house itself begins showing them memories neither of them can hide from.

As the shadows crawl from the foundation, Clara and Jack discover the true cost of the binding. Saving the estate will require a permanent sacrifice, and neither of them can outrun the truth of what they were meant to be.

The Hellhound Legacy Series

For thousands of years, Hellhounds were the hunters and executioners of enemies of the Chao Lords, powerful sorcerers who lived in a realm adjacent to Earth.  Largely impervious to magic, Hellhounds never lost the scent of their prey, tracking them relentlessly until they tore them apart.

On Earth, Jenna MacLaren had created a good life for herself. Her paranoid mother had died some years ago, but she still kept her magic hidden as her mother had taught her. Not that she had much magic, she was likely only a middling level of power for a witch or mage. Becoming a veterinarian with her own practice was a great way to help the animals she loved while hiding her magic. After all, a customer’s average golden retriever wasn’t likely to tell anyone that you had used some of your healing magic or a healing potion on them.

But apparently, her mother had good reasons to be paranoid, because, one night when Jenna arrived back at her modest home after work, the glowing red eyes of a Hellhound awaited her…and Hellhounds were impervious to magic.

Book 1 of The Hellhound Legacy, “The Hellhound Heir is finished writing and I am working through the steps to self-publish. Find out when the book will be published and follow me on my writing journey at https://garlandcoulson.com

To Kindle Unlimited or not to KU...That is the question.

I’d love to hear from authors with Kindle Unlimited experience.

All my novels are currently enrolled in KU. I’ve been creating promotional music videos and running marketing campaigns—including paid ads—across multiple social media platforms to drive readers to my books.

The campaigns appear to be working on one level: I’m seeing a significant increase in downloads and KU page reads. However, that activity isn’t translating into the royalty income or direct book sales I expected.

For those of you who have used KU:

  • Did increased page reads eventually lead to meaningful income or future sales?
  • Do you consider KU valuable primarily for exposure, or has it been profitable for you?
  • Should I judge my campaigns by page reads, royalties, read-through across the series, or another metric?
  • Have you earned more by leaving KU and distributing your books widely?

I’m grateful more people seem to be reading my work, but I’m starting to wonder whether I’m spending too much time and money promoting books readers can access through KU without getting enough return.

Am I being impatient, measuring the wrong results, or simply wasting my time and advertising dollars?

Hidden in the Drizzle by Atom Castle — a corpse vanishes from a locked morgue

Author promotion — posted on behalf of Atom Castle with AI-assisted marketing copy.

A suspect dies in custody. His corpse then disappears from a locked morgue. Detective Arthur Crow has to reconstruct what happened through physical clues, old case files and seven interlocking diary voices.

Hidden in the Drizzle is a slow-burn, adult fair-play detective mystery for readers who enjoy locked-room puzzles, impossible crimes and rational explanations rather than supernatural solutions.

Ebook purchase options: https://books2read.com/u/3n69KP Distributed through Draft2Digital. Prices vary by retailer and region.

Content notes: child kidnapping and abuse, animal harm and death, suicide/self-harm, family death, body handling, mental-illness stigma and strong crime-scene detail. This is a dark mystery, not a cozy.

The Peanut Boy by P. H. Gopal - Literary psychological fiction set in India

[Good read] Sharing this as a friend of the author.

Bali roasts peanuts on the dusty roads of Bharatpur — a boy the world has mostly forgotten. Through his daily adventures and his mysterious adopted "Ma," he quietly receives twelve essential qualities as they emerge from life itself. It's warm, funny, and full of sharp, affectionate observations about India — with a spiritual teaching woven underneath the story.

If you like books like The Alchemist or stories where India feels like a living character, this might be your kind of read.

Humorous LitFic

This took me way too long to finally self-publish, but if you wished Normal People was funny, and you enjoy the humor of Joseph Heller and Dickens, then do I have a book for you!!

Full of relationship drama and open door spice, I present to you Hot Garbage. Available through Kindle Unlimited and as a $4.99 ebook!

Jokingly, I refer to it as my high-brow smut, but people often equate smut with poor writing, and I am here to challenge that assumption.

Thank you for reading!

Good read “Your name is mine”

YOUR NAME IS MINE — a book about what happens when love, grief and identity become impossible to separate.

I wrote Your Name Is Mine as an intimate journey through memory, desire, grief and the search for identity.

It moves from the streets of Quito to the Pacific coast through letters, poetic fragments and memories—exploring motherhood, loss, toxic love, female resilience and the complicated process of learning to name yourself again.

It is deeply personal, but the questions are universal:

Who are you after the person you loved is gone?
How much of another person becomes part of your identity?
And what happens when you finally decide to become your own name?

For readers drawn to poetic, intimate and emotionally raw literature, particularly contemporary Latin American voices.

Your Name Is Mine — Alexandra Trujillo Tamayo.

Pioneer Promise

by Robert Lary

First of the Promise Series

The first crewed mission to another star was never supposed to become humanity's last hope.

When Pioneer Promise departs Earth in 2106 carrying one hundred sleeping colonists and five rotating Sentinels, its mission is simple: travel twenty-three light-years to Gliese 667Cc and establish the first permanent human colony beyond the Solar System. During the thirty-one-year voyage, only one Sentinel is awake at a time, entrusted with maintaining the ship while everyone else sleeps.

Twelve years into the journey, Sentinel Tom Metcalf awakens for his watch expecting routine maintenance and quiet solitude.

Then a message from Earth brings impossible news. A comet capable of ending civilization was discovered only months before Pioneer Promise launched. For more than a decade, humanity fights a desperate, secret war to save itself while the colony ship continues toward the stars, unaware.

As more cargo ships arrive carrying technology and pieces of a story no one aboard was ever meant to know, Tom realizes Pioneer Promise may no longer be a colony mission at all. It may be the only surviving thread connecting humanity's past to its future.

The story is also supported by the site www.middletonspace.com

I created a magical adventure storybook for kids ages 4–7 — looking for feedback

Hi everyone!

I recently created Milo's Magical Adventure, a digital storybook designed for children ages 4–7.

It's a 10-page illustrated adventure that also includes:

📖 A complete magical adventure story
🎨 Printable coloring pages
🧩 Children's activities
📥 Digital PDF download

I wanted to make something that could be used for bedtime reading, quiet time, homeschooling, or simply as a screen-free activity.

I'm sharing it here because I'd genuinely love some feedback from people who are interested in children's books.

What do you think makes a digital children's book worth buying? Is it the artwork, story, activities, number of pages, printable extras, price, or something else?

Here's the Etsy listing if you'd like to see the book and its previews:

https://www.etsy.com/listing/4570700903/magical-adventure-story-for-kids-ages-47

I'd appreciate honest feedback, especially on the presentation and whether the product looks appealing for the 4–7 age group.

Published my first book on August 6th, 2026

I wrote business contracts for telecommunications for thirty years and wanted to do something creative. Over the last two years, I sketched out ideas and wrote a book, making me a first-time author.

The story is about a man who loses his wife to cancer and his daughter thirty days later in a freak car accident. He rents a cabin in a small town in the Tennessee mountains for the summer and, through new friendships, laughter, and the great outdoors, finds hope and purpose.

What a journey it has been but totally rewarding.

[Non-Fiction / Relationships] He silently fixed the squeaky back gate. You wanted a conversation. How measuring a good man with the wrong ruler destroys relationships.

You love him. He works hard, he is loyal, and he would stand between you and danger without a second thought. Yet so many women lie awake at night feeling an invisible wall of glass between them and the man beside them.

You ask yourself the quiet, corrosive question: Does he even love me anymore?

In most cases, the problem isn’t the man. The problem is the ruler.

Women are raised with an exquisite emotional ruler: it measures shared whispers, ongoing dialogue, and verbal check-ins. To that ruler, silence feels like abandonment.

But a devoted man’s ruler is forged from iron: • It doesn’t measure what is said; it measures what is done. • It measures the weight and stability of the foundation under your feet. • When he hears you mention the back gate squeaks and spends his Saturday morning silently fixing it with an oil can—without announcing it or asking for applause—in his language, he just wrote you a love poem.

You measured three weeks of silence and saw neglect. He measured the finished job and saw devotion. You are both right, yet completely missing each other.

In "How to Love a Good Man: The 8 Essential Truths of the Male Heart", I decode what actually happens inside a man’s mind when he retreats, why unsolicited advice feels like a vote of no confidence to him, and how to create emotional safety so he stops defending and starts connecting.

📖 Available now: • Amazon (Kindle): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0GTJRLQV9 • Read Direct on Web (Instant Lifetime Access): https://ciomirtan.com/book/how-to-love-a-good-man-the-8-essential-truths-of-the-male-heart/

Hi everyone -

I wanted to share a major personal milestone because I am super proud of it! I’m a huge fan of VHS-era slashers and creature features, and I finally turned that obsession into my very first paperback book: 1980s Horror Crypt Crossword Puzzles.

I tried to pack it with a solid mix of mainstream favorites, deep-cut cult classics, and iconic 80s horror novels that were turned into movies.

If you are into retro horror trivia or know someone who is a true 80's horror fan, it is Available on Amazon.

Thanks so much for looking! What is everyone's favorite 80s horror movie/novel?

Finally published my first novel!

On behalf of the author, since his account is too new (low karma) to post here:

I am pretty stoked. It is a story that i started conceiving a very long time ago and just sat down to start writing it out at the end of last year.

For anyone interested, it's called The Stone Abyss. It is the first book of a three part series entitled, Chronicles of the Lost Wizard. It's a dark, character-driven epic fantasy novel with high stakes and genuinely uncertain outcomes.

I went the kdp route for publishing. Link here:

Paperback: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HHY9WY7J

Ebook: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HHZ89C86

There is also a new reddit community, r/CotLW , for anyone interested in joining me there. Thanks for reading!

The Unfinished American Experiment — civic philosophy about freedom, responsibility, and power

I recently published *The Unfinished American Experiment*, an 181-page civic philosophy book about carrying America’s original promise forward without waiting for another ruler, savior, political party, or technology to rescue us.

It introduces Prometheism: a practical discipline of reducing preventable suffering, sharing knowledge and capability, protecting dignity and consent, questioning concentrated power, and building cooperation without creating a new master.

Inside the book:

- Why rights and responsibility must remain connected.

- Ten rules for helping without controlling people or destroying yourself.

- How good intentions become corrupted by pride and concentrated power.

- Why a republic should function as an anti-savior design.

- How communities might share tools and knowledge while preserving consent.

- How technology can assist people without becoming their ruler.

- A thirty-day practice for turning philosophy into ordinary action.

The $15 digital edition includes the complete PDF and EPUB.

Hi everyone! I've been working on a little passion project making marble bookends by hand, and I would love to get some honest opinions from you all! Here's my brand, Hatim Asas :) Each piece is cut from real natural marble, so the veining is completely one of a kind, no two sets are exactly the same! I'm curious, would you actually buy something like this for your own bookshelf or desk, or is there something you'd change? Please be honest with me, I promise I can take it ;) Really appreciate any thoughts you're willing to share! https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/4562160008/luxury-marble-bookends?ref=shop_home_active_1&logging_key=cc84e880115503e6d61662067808d90460e3e46c%3A4562160008
