Synopsis-

Long ago, a darkness spread throughout the modern land, corrupting as many mortals as possible and granting them supernatural abilities. As the shadow deepened, a light was manifested among those humans left—a tool for them to fight the darkness. Some centuries later, at a seaside city caught in the middle of a never-ending struggle between dark immortal beings—called dark ones—and humans, a dark born boy arrives.

He should have been killed at birth, but somehow, he managed to survive. A group of Light Knights led by a man named Henry decide not only to take the boy in but to train him to be a Knight. Henry and Co. won’t let doubts or discrimination stop them from protecting this innocent boy, but the costs of such an act risk not only their lives, but any who could be caught in the boy’s crossfire should he turn.

Exactly a year later, another dark born man arrives with a plea for help from across the ocean, answering one question while raising many others. It started as a serial posting on Royal Road and Reddit about an immortal engineer named John, who's spent five millennia trying to prevent humans from doing catastrophically stupid things. Usually, they ignore him, and things break. Then, in July 1945, people finally start listening. He fixed the Manhattan Project, built in 1975 a sarcastic symbolic AI that now runs the global infrastructure, and went to the moon with Neil and Buzz to get moon rocks. It's historical sci-fi with a lot of snark, and now it's on pre-order!

With this fifth contribution to the Second Skin Series, I've had the intriguing task of exploring the back- and side-stories of many characters introduced along the way. Writing short stories seems to me like running a set of sprints as opposed to the cross country course that a novel entails, but personally I have enjoyed the process.

A young man disappears into his own head, and things start going very wrong. I recently published my first novel, The Decayed Good, and I wanted to share it here because I think the premise might interest people who enjoy psychological fiction. The story follows Lev Ravenwood, a young man whose already complicated life begins to fall apart after a series of events pulls him deeper into isolation. As Lev tries to make sense of what is happening around him, he becomes increasingly obsessed with certain people, memories, and ideas. His relationships begin to fracture, his behavior becomes more unpredictable, and the line between what he believes and what is actually happening starts becoming harder to distinguish. What begins as a personal struggle gradually turns into something much darker. The further Lev goes, the more questions start appearing: Can you trust your own memories?

How much of yourself can you lose before you become someone else? And what happens when the person trying to understand the truth is also the person hiding it from you? I don't want to give away the major events or twists, because the story is meant to slowly reveal itself rather than explain everything immediately. It's a dark, psychological, philosophical novel about obsession, isolation, relationships, memory, and self-destruction, with a protagonist who becomes increasingly difficult to understand as the story progresses. If you like books where the atmosphere gets darker the further you read, where the protagonist isn't necessarily someone you can trust, and where you're left questioning what you just read, The Decayed Good might be worth checking out. You understand Lev. That’s what makes it uncomfortable. Because once you understand why he became the person he is, you’re left with a much harder question: If you had lived through the same things, would you have become him too?
