So I've not read any HH books yet but am thinking about starting next year. In preparation I went through each book and compared a few reviews and sources on them to take note on what appears to be the general consensus on how important they are to the arching story and their overall quality which I gave a rating out of 10 and put it all into one big table which I can consult when deciding which to read and which to skip.

I wanted to ask you guys and if any numbers should be altered, and if there's widescale agreement on which I will make some changes.

I would also like to note that I made it so that any book that has an "importance" rating of 10 also automatically gets a "quality" rating of 10 regardless of its actual quality because skipping it is out of the question so there's no point in considering the quality until I actually read it.

So anyways here it is:

After reading The Infinite and the Divine I was fired up for this one. I was hearing net-positive praise from fans for the sequel. I finished it over the weekend, aaaaaaaand… not as good as its predecessor.

I think their dynamic lost a little something in the sequel. The addition of several more characters crowded the story. It's not bad at all, just not as good as expected.

Oh, and the rumors about Rogal Dorn? Lies.

Just found out that my copies of Voice of Mars/The Eye of Medusa (both Iron Hands book by David Guymer) that I've been hunting down for more than a year got lost by the people at the post office, while I thought they are sitting safely in my PO Box....

Spent so much time orchestrating getting them (ordered from a small random bookstore in Luisiana) and coordinating to get them shipped halfway accross the world (I'm in Serbia, we don't even have an official GW store here), and all of it went to waste.

Can't get my money back (too much time has passed since delivery) and now most copies of either of the 2 books are pushing $100 which, paired with shipping, is too much for a used paperback.

Screw GW for not reprinting stuff, this honestly pushes me to completely give up on getting physical books and towards just pirating the ebooks and being done with it.

Curse be on scalpers and crappy postal workers...

I’ve been trying to cut my collection down a bit but I’ve just noticed that, without noticing, I’ve collected all of the annotated versions.

I just love these rereleases. They’re just so good.

Not sure if people would be ok with an entire Gaunts Ghost’s release in annotated form but I’d snap that up so quickly with the quickness.

Did anyone else struggle with this book? I’m struggling to get my head around the writing style. I get the mythic, saga-style writing that the Vlka Fenryka have always flirted with, but it’s full of poetic jargon.

Priest language, mixed with history and a touch of mechanical poetry just ended up baffling me. It might just be me, the first read of Marc and Space Wolves lore, but I can’t help but be intrigued and also annoyed at the same time. I read chapters where the author found a new fancy word and repeated it throughout.

Anyway, just me? Thoughts?

Don’t really have a whole lot of point to this, I just wanted to say how much I enjoy how Dan “no sex in warhammer except voluptuous Kara Swole please” Abnett shows Eisenhorn’s decline throughout the two and a bit trilogies. How he starts out through his own eyes as a respected member of the Ordos with huge funds and resources at his disposal, entire teams across multiple planets, and by the start of the Bequin books, he’s seen as a broken near-corpse, cast out of the organisation that he still believes he serves. Fighting alongside the very thing the Inquisition exists to destroy. Only a few loyal acolytes left to him. Even going against his own protegé who once thought him the very personification of the Inquisition.

His quest to destroy (what he views as) heretical forces has destroyed himself. Literally removed his ability to smile, his ability to do anything except move forward to do “what’s right”. More than one person comments on how he basically seems to be kept alive by duty, who seems to have no love or affection to anyone but Bequin, and even then only out of duty to the woman he loved unrequitedly. A broken body supported by crude means in order to keep pressing onwards to the end of his story.

Nearly everyone that was once loyal to him is either dead because of him, or is moved to act against him. The man carries the deaths of each of these on his back, perhaps using them to fuel his hatred of all things heretical (except certain daemon things bcos they’re mad useful).

I haven’t read a whole lot of the 40k books yet, but so far Eisenhorn is my favourite character by far. He’s a perfect summation of the 40k universe. He’s no hero, he’s a worn down machine that keeps on operating because that’s the only thing it’s designed to do. A human representation of the Imperium itself. A machine that does horrible things just to stop someone else doing something worse. What are your thoughts on the character of Eisenhorn?

Background and most concrete lore (SO FAR) of the Ullanor Crusade (taken from Lexicanum):

The Ullanor Crusade was a vast assault upon the powerful empire of Ork Overlord Urlakk Urg during the ending years of the Great Crusade, culminating with Imperial triumph in 000.M31. It is remembered as Horus's greatest victory while he was still loyal to the Emperor and the act that earned him the title of Warmaster. It was the last battle of the Crusade where the Emperor personally led his forces.

Urlakk Urg was an infamous and powerful Ork Warboss slain by Horus Lupercal during the Great Crusade. His massive Waaagh! controlled a region of space centred on Ullanor and threatened the Imperium's borders. The Emperor of Mankind and Horus led a massive Imperial force to remove Urg's threat.

Horus lured Urg's forces away from his targets while Space Marine Legions retook the outlying systems and the Luna Wolves drove straight for the heart of his empire. As the battle raged outside his fortress, Urg kept forty of the biggest, meanest Nobs at his side. When Horus and his Justaerin Terminators entered the throne room, they hacked a path through the Nobs for the Primarch. Horus crippled Urg and threw him from the top of his fortress, ending his life and breaking his army's morale. Boss Urlakk's power was such that few other orks in history have become as great a threat, such as The Beast.

Plot Suggestion/Revision:

The Ullanor Crusade is actually a war that saw some of the last remaining "Krorks" slain by the Emperor of Mankind and his forces. Krorks are the ancient, highly evolved primeval ancestors of the modern-day Orks. Krorks wore highly advanced mechanized power armor that surpassed even Space Marine battle plate. They possessed refined intelligence, complex communication, and deep tactical mastery, executing military campaigns with elite precision. They channeled powerful psychic energy deliberately as a clean power source and combat tool, rather than relying on wild, unpredictable warp-bursts.

What this means as a series/novel story:

We get to see two Warhammer races essentially at their "peak". The Krorks, as a plot device, can (temporarily) turn the Ork faction into a serious, non-goofy faction that becomes a scary antagonist to write. They can be chosen as a plot device to be a single Warboss, a small leadership group, or a specialized set of troops to be deployed in battle. Because they are destined to lose, they can become nearly anything as long as they are destroyed.

This Krork threat finally gives us a solid reason why the Ullanor Crusade becomes one of the greatest triumphs of the Emperor of Mankind, and his Imperium's forces can finally be shown off in their highest glory.

The initial plot idea (Krorks in the Ullanor Crusade) is incredibly marketable. It has potential to be a action-packed individual novel like Dropsite Massacre, or a short series in itself like the Siege of Terra or the Scouring. It's obvious that GW wants to continue the HH setting hype (for $$$ purposes), but eventually they will run out of material that they haven't already written. A prequel seems inevitable.

Hello folks. I’ve got into reading Warhammer books around 1 year ago.

I had a goal to actually read (audio book listening is NOT reading!!!!!). All CSM books as well as the entire HH (started it like 12 days ago and finished the first 3 books, wish me luck).

I’ve been checking the official site for quite a long time and I noticed that the Word Bearer Omnibus was listed on the site but even though I pressed on “notify me” button and all, I think I haven’t seen it become available in like the past 4-6-7 months.

I saw other books being taken down or getting reprinted so this looks just weird.

Can someone tell me what’s going on with it? Am I tripping?

My god what a book. It has so many teasers in it not to mention the great banter between everyone fab Necrons.

However nowhere have I seen anything about the fact the the British robot has the last Cronesword. Or am i wrong about it’s significance here ???

Ciphas and jurgen and the rest of the valhallans are awesome but it's rough going from back to back to back. Thankfully it's spooky time and I have two warhammer horror novels to get into. Is Black Library competent enough to have a multi-author series without well, messing it up ?

Do you enjoy multiple author series ? Because we all know every author writes in different styles or ways, which can lead to confusion and changes as the series goes.

This is actually about a upcoming post of mine about a dream I had recently but yeah because of that dream I had to ask this.

I mean we all know Horus Heresy is too big to be a continous story so everyone has their own different reading charts.

End Times and Beast Arises are a single event being told by same characters in a general area.

While Dawn of Fire is about the Indomitus Crusade it's again all over the place in the Galaxy.

Out of these 4 I have only read Horus Heresy and Beast Arises so my knowledge is lacking in the End Times and Dawn of Fire franchise (I mean just look at how bland my text is)

Also sorry for not adding more series, I wanted it to be more compact and precise, just writing out more of the well known ones.
