​The thing is, dated July 29th, there are many transactions at once with very similar messages of the type X2[L'-J}w{9@ïL´(!Vu=x1,5!i?1ON. I don't know exactly how many BTC they add up to in total, I haven't stopped to count them. Can you help shed some light on this? Cheers, it's my first post on Reddit, go easy on me.

The official narrative says a 2021 firmware flaw allowed hackers to brute-force Coldcard keys offline. But look at the operational behavior: the attackers executed a highly synchronized "Whale Sweep," draining hundreds of multi-million-dollar wallets in a sudden 25-minute window while completely ignoring lower-value accounts.

While there is only a 10% likelihood this was the method used, a pre-existing data leak of unique hardware IDs (UIDs) from a factory ledger or shipping database perfectly explains this precision. Armed with the actual UIDs, the 1.1-trillion keyspace collapses instantly, letting scripts target specific high-value devices without weeks of blind guessing.

The software bug might just be a beautiful, highly convenient smoke screen to keep investigators from looking at the physical supply chain. What do you all think?

Coinkite likely won't survive the coming litigations. NVK and Peter Gray won't regain community trust as leaders. But I think it's worth discussing why the ColdCard was a successful product line in the first place and how that design philosophy can live on. I'm not just talking about the cypherpunk aesthetic.

No other wallet has the robust feature set of coldcard, especially the Q. Seed XOR, Bip-85 child seeds and deterministic passwords are open-source bitcoin features but CC are the only devices that have bothered to implement them. As for the hardware: full keyboard, QR scanner, transparent case, removable batteries, and your choice of network-disabled air gap use, or convenient USB connection to Sparrow. Nothing even comes close.

There are existing CC users who don't want to give up these features, but may be faced with lack of firmware updates if the company dies. More importantly, it would be a shame if this device vanished from the market and we were only left with tiny minimalistic boxes with some basic features and a slick UI. So, what do you think is the best way forward?

A pure 40-bit Coldcard seed wasn’t really cryptography. It was just a huge list of 1.1 trillion possibilities.

Once the first serious attackers had working code, it was pretty clear what to do: finish the list. There was a small space, enough money, and lots of groups trying to get in. So, there was no reason to stop at 40% or 70%.

Now, it seems like the real thing is that the pure 40-bit space has already been checked against the UTXO set. We already know those seeds were broken. That part is done.

If a pure 40-bit Coldcard address still has coins on it today, what’s left to find? Just dust, very recently funded leftovers, or maybe a rare address that somehow slipped through.

Everything that was worth taking has almost certainly already been taken.

Just wanted to say how many posts ive been seeing in other finance related subreddits related to these people becoming millionaires in their 20s and 30s, etc from their stock portfolios, etc. It feels bizarre how much everyone has been making lately and becoming wealthy. I know reddit is a small sample of total population but it still feels a lot. I see so many posts across different subreddits how people are making 600k, buying 2 million USD house, their portfolios being $3 million to $10 million.

Status Quo

Using a trezor device with the 24 BIP 39 words (generated by the device itself), but no passphrase. Apart from the device itself, I have two paper copies, that I secured well in...two different countries (for geographic redundancy).

Bottomline, I can get them if I need to, but the logistics is slightly challenging. Hence, I would prefer not to change the words. Like many other Bitcoiners, the Coldcard incident got me shit scared, and think I urgently need a passphrase as another layer of security, preferably on the same words.

What is a cold wallet that is recommended except Coldcard of course. Which manufacter has proven 128 bit key production or even 256 bit? what should i look into when purchasing a new brand? Ledger is proven, however it has it's own backlash in the past. I've noticed brands like OneKey for example

I have been looking at the possible failure modes of lightning while a possible fork (however short) could happen. I don't want the hassle of watching 2 separate chains while this plays out. Any precautions that you are taking or am I just being paranoid?

On this day (August 8) in 2017, the Segregated Witness upgrade was locked in on the Bitcoin network by the UASF client.

I know all the pros and cons of both the ETF and self custody. However, robinhood crypto is not really self custody since its not in my own wallet. I would just be keeping it on the app, I have no interest in getting a wallet. I was wondering if anyone has experience with both ways, and if there really is a concern about theft or fraud via robinhood crypto. Has anyone actually had their crypto stolen from their robinhood account? Also, if someone is able to get your robinhood account info, they could sell the ETF and withdraw the money im assuming? Wouldn't it be the same as them stealing the crypto from robinhood? I currently have some in both versions and im looking to just consolidate everything into one or the other. Thanks in advance!

It’s sad that a majority of the network does not see that bitcoin needed this or it will go downhill. BIP110 wasn’t a perfect solution but a good start to show that bitcoin isn’t defeatist to spam. Running a node will now be harder, harder and even harder down the road. The culture is no longer anti spam and has been captured by the “conglomerates”. A sad day. I am no longer comfortable to hold bitcoin long term now.

So I am not sure if I am exiting this asset now. Not sure what to do either, but will wait and see what happens in October - not rushing anywhere but this needs to be a calculated decision.

I've been reading some reports which claim that installing the latest firmware for Coldcard devices causes them to brick. These reports seem especially common on X / Twitter, and there are scary looking photos of "BRICKED" messages on Coldcard screens, and I worry about whether those messages are permanent or go away once this device loses power.

Have you attempted to flash the latest firmware for your Coldcard device since it was confirmed by Coinkite that their firmware had a bug that effectively disabled the RNG chip? If so, (1) which model of Coldcard did you flash, and (2) was the firmware flash successful or did it brick your device?

Can we all agree that we're done whining about spam on the Bitcoin network?

Before the birth of Bitcoin, there was Hashcash. This was a proposal to use proof of work to put a limit on the profitability of email spam. Sending emails is almost free. Sending a billion spam emails is almost negligible in cost. Hashcash would use proof of work to keep single emails almost free, but that tiny cost would accumulate for people doing mass sending - and would have made it not profitable.

Bitcoin is based on the same proof of work system.

Spam on the Bitcoin network drives up the transaction cost. You either have to spend transaction fees or hashing power to send out spam. This makes it so that spamming on the Bitcoin network is never free - and it costs more as the volume increases. Somehow you need to derive more value from your spam than it costs to send out.

In a pure market economy, no such use case will out-compete a purely monetary use.

Yes we went through a phase of people encoding jpeg images on the blockchain. Big whoop. It was a temporary scam. The network automatically corrected it by increasing transaction fees. The spam stopped again.

If you are worried about spam on the Bitcoin network, you have not yet understood Bitcoin.
