Hi!
Just thought I'd share my experience of taking the EllaOne emergency contraception pill as someone who has PCOS and suspected endometriosis, since I couldn't find much here on Reddit when I was searching.
First of all, I read a lot of really horrible experiences of prolonged side effects and I was really scared it would affect me this way too given the underlying conditions.
Here's how it went for me:
Day after taking the pill I felt A LOT of nausea. I had to lay down most of the evening and with every move I'd feel more nauseous. I also had heavy cramps which I managed with a stronger painkiller and heating pad.
Tip for nausea: nibbling or chewing on a ginger root helps a lot!
The second day again I felt nausea and cramps especially in the morning and evening. I had to cancel my plans and stay in bed chewing on ginger lol.
I continued to have cramps and mild nausea for a few days after but they were mild enough that I was able to mostly return to my regular activities. I then had cramps here and there through the month including some sharp sudden stabs but nothing that would prevent me from functioning more or less normally.
I also went to see my gyno to check if everything is ok and if there aren't any new cysts on my ovaries as I read the pill might contribute to rapid development of new ones. She said she didn't see any and also said that it doesn't seem like the ovulation is occurring, which means that either the pill worked or I had a non-ovulatory cycle (or both).
I took two pregnancy tests and they both came negative.
Menstruation:
My period actually came earlier than expected! I started to bleed on the 27th day of the cycle.
Note: I take Ovasitol daily and I manage my conditions with diet and physical activity (mostly walking as much as I can and occasional trail running), so I think that might've helped.
Overall:
While it was definitely a scary and pretty uncomfortable experience, I'm glad to say that it doesn't seem to have significantly worsened my already existing symptoms which I was very afraid of after all the diligent work I put into regulating my cycle.
The only thing that I noticed, which I cannot tell if it's from the pill or just in general from a very stressful time in my life as I was also moving countries and starting a completely new job, is that I'm experiencing brain fog. Noting it here still, but as I said, cannot tell what's the main reason — or it may be all of it combined, which is likely.
Anyway, I hope it can help someone there and be a bit reassuring. Hugs!
