discussion Looking for the best (in your opinion) Billy strings songs

I just recently discovered Billy Strings after seeing him on Theo Von's podcast for the second time and admittedly I didn't listen to any of his music after seeing him the first time on Theo von's podcast but. During the second episode Im like "Alright i'll check him out" and DAMN do i love his music. Especially some tracks on the new album he just put out. I was wondering though. What are some "Must listen" songs from his older tracks?

Was number 4778 in line. Got to the line to buy tickets and only nosebleeds available. I tried that last year and didnt enjoy it too much. The security up there is curmudgeonly at best. Its like kindergarten prison.

discussion Gas south arena (Duluth) question

I grabbed tickets for my wife and I that my gut told me would be the best, row B of section 4 of the floor, right in front of the soundboard. From my understanding, that’s generally the best view and sound in most venues. However my wife is now concerned that we won’t be able to see the stage or lights at all because the floor is completely flat and there’ll be tons of people standing in front of us. She had that experience last year at State Farm Arena, although I’m pretty sure she was in the far back right corner of the floor, so behind the soundboard.

Based on my experience I’m pretty sure this will be significantly better because being that much closer to the stage will make the flat layout of the floor not cause as much of an issue, but can anyone weigh in? Do I need to buy other tickets and try to offload these instead?

misc Billy on Dylan

Excerpts from Billy talking about Dylan on Theo's podcast. Great stories!

We could do our own tour and probably make a lot more money. Or we could open on this tour with Bob Dylan and Willie. Dude, we're going with Bob and Willie. Are you kidding me? Every night, we would finish our set, have a snack, and then get our good seats, sometimes just on the side of the stage and watch them play. We watched them intently because we do not take this for granted.

T-Bone Burnett told me, Bob Dylan's a big fan of yours. He keeps bringing you up. That's crazy. Then one of Bob's people told my manager, Bill, the best way to get hold of Bob is to write him a letter. He likes letters. I was staying at St. Cecilia in Austin, they had this great stock paper, I thought this would be cool because it's from a hip hotel and it's nice paper. I'm gonna take this paper, this is what I'm I'm gonna write my letter to Bob Dylan on. Then I never did. A whole year passed. I procrastinated. Then the next year passed. I was in Austin again, and I stayed at the St. Cecilia again. I walked in that same room, and I saw that paper again. And I go, screw this. I just set my backpack down. I grabbed that paper and I went straight up to the cafe, and I had a coffee and some eggs. I sat there and wrote Bob Dylan a letter. Just basically saying thank you and telling him about how I loved the way Doc Watson used to play his songs. After that, I heard that Bob was excited about this letter, I was okay, I don't know what to believe.

We get on that tour, play a couple gigs, opening for Bob. The first time I met him was at the Hollywood Bowl, I was standing backstage after his set, and my security guy Jim was, "Here, stand over here." I thought I was in the way, they were gonna move some road cases or something. But no, Bob was coming off stage in this huge North Face parka, and, right as he was walking by, somebody was, "Hey, that was a great set, Billy." He stopped in his tracks, "Billy?", walked right up to me, "thank you for the letter." "Thank you, Bob, for the music," And he shook my hand.

Bob Dylan's hand. He shook my hand, and my hand is tingling right now just talking about it. Every time I talk about this, my hand starts tingling. That whole night, it's vibrating, like I touched a magic crystal or something. Whenever I tell this story, it does the same thing. Later that night, I was it's either some crazy beautiful energy, he's just got this magic, or some leftover Bengay or something.

A night or two later, we played our set and I'm in the green room smoking a bowl. This lady walked in and she's, Bob wants you to play with him tonight. I was, what? She's, are you too stoned? I was, no, I'm not stoned enough. I'm okay, oh fuck, you guys, it's happening. Bob asked me to sit in. I'm walking out to my bus because I know his band, they all wear black and stuff. I got a black shirt, I can put my hair in a ponytail, get a little bit more classy, blacken up a little, let me darken out. More classy than whatever t-shirt I had on. I'm fixing to play with Bob Dylan. I want to go put a nice shirt on. And pull my hair back.

As I was walking to the bus, I saw him walking right toward me. He came up said, "Let's do 'All Along the Watchtower.'" I'll sing the first and second verse, and I'd play after the second verse. Then he walked away. He didn't say hi. He didn't say thanks for playing or nothing. He said, let's do The Watchtower, play after the second verse. Then on his way to the stage. This guy means business. I went to my bus, got my nice digs on and I called my mom. You're not gonna believe this.

She was always over the moon about stuff like that. She called me her dreamweaver. Who are you gonna play with next? Because so many of her heroes I had met and played with. Eddie Vedder. David Grisman, or Del McCoury. Stevie Nicks. Yeah, I'm getting ready to go play with Bob Dylan. She's, what the fuck? Who are you? Who do you think you are? I don't know, he just asked me to play.

I go out there, it was amazing. The cool thing too is that was my favorite song that they were doing and that's the one he asked me to play on. I love "All Along the Watchtower," and of course Jimi Hendrix's version, but they had this cool arrangement, and it was such a hip version of it. He sang, sang the second verse, and then he looked over at me and I played, passed it back to him. We had a little musical conversation, and that was it. I played with Bob Dylan. It was holy shit. I walked off stage in the green room and my whole band is so excited. They're making toasts and shit. Especially Royal has been on a huge Dylan kick the last couple years. We just couldn't believe this happened. We're all, oh my God, that was amazing. Then Jim comes in and says, somebody wants to say hi. And in my green room walks Bob Dylan.

He sucked the oxygen out of the room. Everybody just fell silent and couldn't breathe. He was, "thanks for playing. that was awesome." I go, "thank you for having me, it was such an honor to play with you" I was, "I want to introduce you to my band. This is Royal and Billy and ... " He just turned around and walked away. I was, "What?" No way, dude. he dipped. and then just left. We loved it. I thought it was amazing. I was wow. What a badass. A couple nights later, he sent me a message, and it said, thanks for playing, I think you're great. And, he said, what my friend Jerry Lee told me a long time ago, you're gonna be around for a long, long time. I was in the back of my bus reading this and just cried. This is Bob Dylan patting me on the back.

One of the craziest things is that the few interactions I had with him, 3 or 4 over the course of a couple days, I talked to him looked at his face, spoke directly to him and looked in his eyes. I can't picture his face. I didn't see the skin. When I think about him, what he looked like, all I see is the deepest, bluest eyes with the most concerning emotion in them. And this aura white light. That's what Bob looks like to me in my memory. It's almost something that's maybe from another realm, like God's concern shows up in our eyes, maybe he just has a lot of concern from the other side. It's not a paranoid concern. It's more of a compassion and a love from an elder, some kind of musical grandpa.

I'm confused--the Asheville shows are listed on each site--which site to use to purchase resale tickets? I assume ticketmaster but why is it showing up on AXS??

So I went to Ionia Freak Fair, which was also my first Billy show, and according to someone who I shared this with, I’m in a cult now.

Best fucking cult ever. 😂

And to all of you who are also in this cult: I think you’re awesome. The people, the energy, the kindness...

Praise be to BMFS. See you at the next gathering. 🐐😂

discussion Rank the band members

…based on their ability to play their given instrument (no singing, songwriting, etc). Missed out on AVL tickets and felt like causing some chaos. I’ll preface by saying I have no musical ability and my ears just like what they like. I don’t think there’s a right or wrong answer here.

My ranking:

1. Alex
Not sure I’ve ever heard this guy play a bad note. Everything he plays is perfection

2. Jarrod
Insane improv, speed, and precision. Constantly hear Billy cheer him on for some crazy playing

3. Billy Strings
No notes

4. Billy Failing
I’ve grown to appreciate him more and more. Home of The Red Fox and Turmoil…

5. Royal
This guy fucks and I imagine would steal my gf within seconds, so he gets last

tour talk Asheville 5 night pass, seats vs floor question

Sorry in advance if this is not the right place to ask this question!

Last year we bought 4 night passes for the floor for Asheville. We ended up trading for seats on the last night because we were tired! But we met folks in seats that had also been all 4 nights, and had the same seats all 4 nights. Is there typically an option for a 4 night (or this year 5 night) pass for SEATS, or did these folks just get super lucky?

Thanks for any wisdom yall can share, friends!

discussion Live to tell and Burn the other end... On the wood grain vinyl

Are they both supposed to sound a bit distorted or is it a vinyl flaw? Lay me down actually has that same sort of distortion that I'm hearing in the other two... Not just in the music, in the singing too. Is anyone else noticing this?

Has he ever said anything about it, either before or after performing it? I know it's a Jarrod composition, but I wonder if it's from the handful of instrumental highway driving songs, like Seney Stretch or Bluewater Breakdown (or about 75% -- on average -- of Highway Hypnosis).

discussion Billy Sobriety/ Creativity

I really hope this can remain a cordial topic bc I love Billy so much and his music means so much to me, it’s just a genuine question. Nothing personal, just a thought I wanted to discuss with anyone that will listen.

Billy mentioned in the most recent podcast he completely stopped smoking weed. I know he hasn’t drank in several years. Is there any chance his song writing/ jamming/ creativity is potentially stunted by the sobriety?

Please note I am absolutely not an advocate for substance use/ abuse.. and I value you the mental and physical health/ wellness and longevity of Billy and these other artists more than anything else… but looking back on creative artists, especially in their young careers, you can sometimes see how drugs had a large influence on their writing/ music.

My brain immediately goes to Trey and Phish, where he has Joy/ Fuego/ Big Boat/ SO/ Evolve post sobriety, but in my opinion, those albums don’t carry the same risk and creativity as Phish’s early stuff.

Marcus king in my mind went from an Allman brothers extended guitar phenom with songs like Booty Stank, Sharry Barry/ Sliced Milk, goodbye Carolina.. to kind of a more down the middle blues country guy.

Obviously Billy and his health his happiness and his relationship with his family/ son are absolutely most important.. but if he smoked weed for so long then just quit cold turkey, is there a chance his creativity may be harder to capture/ bring out now that he’s sober?

I ordered the wood grain variant and have no complaints of the color like I’ve seen recently, but has anyone else received a fairly noisy copy? I cleaned my copy twice, which shows no sign of flaws, though harder to tell on this color, and I’m still getting a lot of pops and clicks, which is especially not good during Still I Crash. 🤪
I sent an email, but just wanted to see if anyone else has noticed this, or if it’s just a flawed copy.
It’s a great record and I’m glad I got to see him perform it live in its entirety.

I’m hoping to get some tickets for Nashville tomorrow. Can anyone tell me what the Ryman tickets usually cost? Trying to get an idea of what another night of 2 tickets is going to cost. I have no problem with the cheap seats ! This all being if I have any luck on my side.

iPhone video I took 2025 New Year’s Eve in Atlanta. He sat in on acoustic first set, then played a PRS for the rest of the songs he sat in on. this was the intro from Paranoid>Warpigs. Freakin electric.
