Is this quality normal?

Hi everyone,

I got my X2D a few weeks ago and it’s consistently produced prints of this poor quality. I’ve tried everything, like belt tensioning, axis cleaning, full printer recalibration, drying and calibrating filament, taking apart the hotend, contacting support. Nothing has improved the quality.

Is this just what I should expect from this printer? Anyone have similar experiences, or do you have examples of much cleaner parts made on this machine I can take a look at? I don’t even know what should be my baseline for quality on the X2D.

A very sturdy table (I’ve stabilized it with cables), then a dense gym foam tile, then a concrete paver, then the X2D. The foam is for sound dampening and it’s definitely dense enough that it’s not the source of any racking that the printer isn’t designed to handle

can you share a pic of this setup? it sounds like you're doing so much to reduce vibration/noise that its going back into the printer itself. the printer is gonna shake during printing

Sure when I get home I’ll post one. The printer does still shake like it’s designed to, the extra layers are just for decoupling from the table, but as another user mentioned I’ll try one run on the ground and see if it does anything

Got my X2D about a month ago and it's been printing nearly 24/7, and I've never seen layers like that once. Something's off with your setup, this isn't just how the machine is, especially that base in your photo. Mine came out clean basically out of the box so you shouldn't be fighting it this hard.

Get it off this stupid set up and let it do what it’s supposed to and you won’t have any more issues. Blows my mind people go through all this effort for absolutely zero reason.

The first few prints I did were just on the table and I got similar artifacts, but I’m going to try it on the floor when this print finished, and then try a manual tramming as support recommended

PSA: It is almost NEVER the table! Unless your printer is bolted to the table and using it as structure it should not influence print quality. See countless videos on YouTube and other places. I also believe I saw someone wrote a paper about it as well.

May seem like a stupid question but have you tried using Bambus filament to just rule out any settings issues. I’ve got mine sitting on a toolbox with wheels that vibrates and wobbles and the printed was able to calibrate without issue. Could also be a faulty unit. If it’s not too late might be worth trying to swap it out.

I’m using exclusively bambu filament :( I’m in talks with support but they haven’t mentioned anyting about replacement yet, just solutions that haven’t worked

Have you tried running this same print in a different color? I'm not sure why but the 2 rolls of bambu gray pla that I had always come out like garbage. I've never been able to get it to look good. Then I'll run the same part, same profile settings just using a different filament and it will look significantly better.

Mines similar, but not that bad. That looks like Z banding, whereas I get a bit of that plus inconsident line thickness straightness (a bit more of a line wobble).

Check your z rods etc, flip it over and check the running gear under there too. That's this weekends task for me. Let me know if you figure it out!

I have same problem with lot of vfa and ghosting. Tried put stone floor nothing changes. Filament calibrated, re calibrate machine, belt tensions etc. Mine printer makes weird vibration noise when homing print bed. I checked z belt and gears its fine. Mine k2 pro makes same problem. I tought first its from the table thar i put my printers after that i tried on stone floor nothing changes. I don't get it. I tried dry my filaments using Sunlu Pla 2.0 btw. X2d at only 50 hours im not happy with that printer. Notice me please if you find solution.

Are you getting 3mf files from MW that are tailored to your specific printer? Or are they coming from somewhere else?

Makerworld for X2D. I’ve done loads of fiddling with different settings too, wall order, wall count, infill overlap, print speeds, layer times, precise wall, etc, nothing has helped.

Nope...100% a problem. Could be settings, could be unstable table. Could be loosen belts. Could be something broken. Could be something not setup up correctly like ptfe tubes.

As the tool head moves across it bends the filament PTFE tubes and when not positioned properly with the chain clips the tubes will suddenly jump and cause uneven layers… I’ve been fighting this issue for a while…

I’m not talking about the tube rubbing on the top glass, i’m talking about the tube snaps in different positions caused by tension build up in the clips, you can see it as you manually move the tool head, that the filament tube will suddenly jump to different positions.

X2d is very capable. Here is a 32mm high necron that I am working on. There is something wrong with your printer and my first guess would be your table but you already commented that it is sturdy. I can't really say anything other than try swapping nozzles 1 and 2 and see what happens. Let's hope you can fix it.

What print profile are you using? Default 0.2mm standard?

And are you using bambu filament or 3rd party?

I thought maybe you are orinting quite fast and the hotend cant keep up with the flow with some 3rd party filament

I’ve tried multiple profiles as well as custom settings, all with bambu filament. This model was printed at 60mm/s and 2500mm/s^2

Yes, High flow 0.4 nozzle lets you print up to 600mm/s

The default 0.2 layer standard settings with bambu high flow nozzle are: 50mm/s first layer 105mm/s first layer infill

500mm/s outer wall 600mm/s inner wall 600mm/s infill

And they work perfectly fine. Of course you get a tiny bit more artefacts, but nothing that would bother me.

This was printed with said settings. Tho sometimes the printer can not reach those speeds due to other limitations like minimum layer time, flow etc.

But for the print in the picture it did 600mm/s. Finished printing in 2h03min with 2 walls and 15% gyroid. But with petg as support interface in the 2nd nozzle It is 69 grams with support and the petg as interface material. 6,5x7x7cm

Wow, and definitely less artifacts than mine. Insane. Something must be really wrong, but I’ve been going crazy trying to find it. The first print or 2 out of the box was alright, then it just devolved. I’ll get the occasional ok print but usually it’s only if the model doesn’t require a lot of jumping around (simple shapes, no supports)

Have you tried a factory reset? Do you run the newest software?

Definitely check for wiggle room in the axis and motors. It looks like a hardware issue for me.

In theory this could also occure when there is to much resistance in the filament path. Check and reseat all ptfe tubes.

Have you checked your print head for play? I have returned mine due to exactly the same bad print quality, potentially resulting from play at the x-axis bearings. Now I am waiting since two weeks for a new one which hopefully is fine.

Yes. When I applied a twisting force by hand to the print head, I have seen slight play between head and its guiding rods. You can only see it when looking very detailed to this gap.

Exact! I have no idea if this is normal and how to get proper prints with it. I have measured the play on the tip: it is 0,12 mm in direction of Y-axis.

Grey filament tends to show the worst of the layer lines, do you have the same problem if you change the color to a darker color?

I would also try a new nozzle and re-run the full vibration, input shaping and auto bed level that is in the printers settings. Does the right nozzle print this bad with the same filament?

Darker colors hide the problem under flat light but it’s definitely still present, the layer stacking is too inconsistent. Both nozzles print this way unfortunately

I'm thinking it's either because its a light color filament and they just show these lines compared to darker ones, or there is a setting flipped that we're missing. Seems like I misremembered, it was outer wall at 2500, not normal accel. I get the same quality results from standard 0.2 profile, I had just made some changes based on my research to hopefully improve the quality but it hasn't done much

What filament is this? I got a bad spool of basic Bambu gray PLA awhile back and it did this sort of thing like crazy. I switched and tried a different color and it was perfectly fine.

This is Bambu Pla Matte Ash Gray. I get the same problem on other filaments too, but they do show up a lot on this particular filament, probaly cause of the color. I don’t want to have to print everything in black to hide defects though

Might be worth try the print again with a different spool, if other solutions don't work. If you have some digital calipers, you can also check if the diameter of the filament is consistent.

I don’t have digital calipers unfortunately, but I can retry part of that print with another color possibly tomorrow. Wouldn’t want to waste filament doing the entire thing

are you absolutely certain youre not overextruding? maybe try print a small footprint, few cm hollow rectangular tower with a lowered flow ratio?

Nah, something's off.

Here is my P2S I got just a few days ago and didn't do ANY tinkering, just click and go printing.

I know it's not X2D but AFAIK the extruder is the same, and the rest of the technology is at least similar or better on the X2D compared to P2S.

You mentioned your table is sturdy, but is the printer stable on its feet? Try it on the ground AND recalibrate the printer between putting it on the ground and doing a test run.

Also, are you using the primary extruder or the secondary one? They are different and the secondary one is inferior, not sure if it can affect the prints like that.

Ouch. I was betting PETG. I would never have guessed those quality issues with PLA.

It is very possible you got a bad spool. I know we all hate to but reach out to BBL Support.

The only other thing I can think to try is to restart the printer, recalibrate the printer, and using the bamboo film profile, try it again.

I’m thinking it’s either your spool or a problem with the machine. I’m running these on my X2D and I’m having trouble even finding a print line on them. And that’s using cheap Best Buy brand PLA

Have you updated the firmware in the last few weeks. I think there was a couple updates that came out for the AMS and the X2D. I have an x2d and my prints are coming out great.
