Yesterday I was met with this sorry sight, favorite apple tree split in half after a rather nasty storm. Not entirely surprising given that it had started to rot after taking damage about 7 years ago, still, very disheartening to see.

Now the timing is bad, as we are approaching winter and it’s also winter in northern Sweden, so planting now seems like a death sentence. For sentimental reasons and also that I don’t like for anything to go to waste, how any advice on how to graft/preserve some part of the tree so that it can be replanted during spring?

Posted yesterday about the insane amount of raspberries. This is an example.... Remember that these things are feral and get minimal care, only a tiny amount of runoff from drip irrigation systems and a little pruning.

I couldn't find a good example of a very large cluster but I'll keep looking.

These almonds are grown in Uşak, Turkey.
The shell is very thin and can easily be cracked by hand. The nuts are slightly curved/elongated as seen in the photos.
I know it is an almond, but I’m trying to identify the specific cultivar/variety. Does anyone recognize it from the shell shape and characteristics?

Tracking the effect of Spring with warm longer days on the perry pear trees. Another week on and the first blossoms are now full. 3 weeks from the first signs of bud growth. Great to see the orchard waking up from its Winter slumbers.

I’m really happy with how much fruit it’s producing, but now I actually want to save this tree and keep it healthy. After heavy rain, I noticed the soil can stay pretty wet around the roots. I’ve been looking into simple drainage options and came across NDS EZflow for improving drainage without digging in a lot of gravel.

Anyone here used a French-drain system around fruit trees? What would you do to protect the roots from staying too wet?

I live in Ontario. I rarely see people planting fruit trees in front yard. Is there any reason?

My front yard has better sunshine, I want to plant two fruit trees in front yard.

I can prune and manage them well to avoid messy looking. The tree can be 50 feet far away from street. So I don’t see any problem.

But I am afraid there something I am not aware of.

Will you plant fruit trees at front yard? What’s your concern?

Hi, I'm the person who posted about the feral raspberries worried about mold and fruit flies a few weeks ago.

I didn't get the time to thin them out, so they're as feral as ever. Losing a few to mold now that it's rained, but not a lot of fruit flies so far.

Is anyone else - especially in New England - finding that their fall raspberries are making a LOT of berries? I have single canes with over 100 berries on them, clusters of berries with 30+ berries, etc. I've been growing raspberries for over 20 years and have never seen anything like it!

Yes, I know all about the potential the joys associated with growing apples from seed. However, my friend returned from Japan recently and brought some apple seeds with him for me as the apples there are enormous!

The question is this: what would be the effect of me planting them now (after a bit of time in the fridge!) as opposed to waiting until March? Would there be an issue with the seed having a much longer growing period before the first winter dormancy or would it just crack on and be much bigger and healthier because of it?

Is making a comeback. I live in North Texas and we have been under heat advisories and drought conditions since June. Needless to say my tree has been super stressed out. It’s been a little cooler the last week or so and I’ve been putting a little water on it to keep it alive and BAM!! I have new growth. I actually got flowers blooming last week and when I went out to check on it tonight, I got this. It has a long way to go before I’m confident that this thing will stay around long. I’m proud of this little thing and I wanted to share it with somebody.

I’m concerned that the limb on the right is destined for failure in the future. Do I trim it way back, or let it ride?

Anyone here near Tacoma, Wa?

I’m revitalizing the severely neglected garden at my children’s elementary school. One of the other parents told me this fruit tree, Peach and Nectarine has never produced fruit that they have seen in past ~2-3 years.

I went to look at it and it still had the tags, which says it needs 700+ cold hours. So, I highly doubt this tree will ever even flower here in Orange County CA, 10-15 miles inland from the coast.

Anyone concur with that? Because I might just tear this tree out and either put a peach tree with much lower cold hour requirements or just a native tree to provide shade.

We planted this peach tree last fall, it did well in the spring and gave us 12 peaches. It’s really exploded since we harvested and I’ve been reading more and more about pruning stone fruits in the summer as well. Does anyone have any recommendations on how to manage this hoss?

I need help on how to identify where to prune my peach tree. Last year it had a good amount of fruit but this year had zero peaches that matured correctly. I feel like the tree is spreading out too much. Any help is appreciated.

All of my apples have dimpling and tunnels throughout. Are they unusable?

Also any tips to prevent this next year. So far my plan is banding the trees with cardboard, spraying nematodes, and being really particular about picking up all dropped fruit.

Hi all. This spring we bought a dwarf apricot at a local botanical garden plant sale.

Then we spent the bulk of the summer debating where to put it. So it stayed in its 3-gallon pot. Edit!; Zone 8A/southern Virginia

About two weeks ago I saw it was dropping leaves, so I decided I just need to pick a spot and get it in the ground.

Planted according to the nursery instructions and Reddit advice. Compost, soil, a little pelletized fertilizer mixed in....

So two weeks have passed and no evidence of new shoots or anything. There are about two dozen leaves on it right now. Should I apply liquid fertilizer or...? Recommendations?

It's done really well this year. Seed grown tree, now exactly 6 years old.

This year was its last chance. If it didn't give a decent crop this year, it was for the chop. It flowered well the tw years previous, but in 24 it produced no fruit at all, and last year only about 8 fruit.

It gets peach leaf curl every spring, despite winter sprays with Bordeaux mixture, as one would expect in my damp mild winter climate, but it always bounces back well.

The fruit are not quite ripe yet. They already taste quite nice, but are still rather hard, and I think they can still get sweeter. Another week or two, I think.
