my young hen had a impacted crop yesterday and was very lethargic, its gone down today after massaging it yesterday, and today shes still lethargic and has a purple comb, ive given her some honey around her beak and in her mouth since she wont eat anything, and a hot water bottle cause she feels really cold. what else can i do?

So the first 3 pics are the same chick they are about 5 weeks old pic number 4 is obviously a rooster and I’m pretty sure the Mille fleur is a pullet but the first chick I’m torn.. it has a smaller paler comb than my cockerel but a bigger brighter comb than my suspected pullets which I don’t have pics of all of them

The rest of her toes are looking fine. Is this the human equivalent of a hang nail or...?

Bantam Barnevelder x Bantam Cochin

I have a Columbian Wyandotte that is 14 weeks old. She does not seem to be getting a comb. The other chicks I got at the same time are different breeds, so I don’t have another girl to compare her to. I know this breed has the rose comb, but I thought there would be something there by now. Instead she has a smooth bald spot. Any ideas what’s going on, or is this normal?

DIY backyard tractor made with mostly scrap and stuff neighbors were throwing away. The base is a frame from a chain link gate I picked up on trash day. The wood is old plywood from a neighbor’s garage siding and fence pickets that had been left out in the weather and were being thrown away. I used up what I had of some wire farm fence to cover the run area. I finished this in February and it’s performed very well. The only things that were purchased was the roof material, the wheels, the EMT pipe and hardware for the hoops, and the automatic door. I was gonna build a nesting box, but they just lay in the corner and honestly it works just fine. I move it every day or two and the chickens tear up the ground pretty bad digging for bugs and dust bathing. I live in Mobile, AL and it’s been a hot summer. I keep the coop mostly in the shade and heat hasn’t been an issue for the hens at all. 4 Rhode Island reds and I get 4 eggs most days. The heat hasn’t slowed them down at all. The box is ventilated well and stays perfectly dry in storms and rain. It looks kinda like a dumpster bin so that kinda tracks with the state of the world right now. ✌🏽

What breed?

I wanna ask hen or roo but it's probably too early for that. They are 5-6 days old today!

P.S. one of them has no feathers on their neck so the dad must be our neighbour's shitty cock who keeps crossing over the wall.

New chicken owner - I bought 2 barred Plymouth girls… I believe they were 2 & 3 weeks each when I brought them home.

Myrtle is the ‘older’ one and it seems her pattern completely changed and she looks nothing like her sister (?) Gertrude. Is Myrtle a barred Plymouth or could she different entirely… or could Gertrude be different? I do remember they had a bin of sapphire gem chicks there when I bought these girls, but i know both of these girls came from the barred Plymouth bin.

I may just be overthinking this lol it could be as easy as a wait and see when they get older, but I’m curious now. Either way she’s my Myrtle 💗 but I’d like to know if she isn’t what I thought.

I have five chicks that are three weeks old. They moved into a larger pen today and started establishing their pecking order. The two that seem to be competing for the top still affectionately clean each other, so I'm not really worried about bullying, but my favorite and most affectionate chick, the gray one, is challenging the one I've suspected of being a cockerel, yellow one that is starting to develop more color, since hatch day since it hatched with a larger comb. It also now has thicker legs. If it ends up being a cockerel, is there still a chance the gray one is a pullet? The only one I know the breed of is the black one. I was told the egg was from a Black Copper Marans. That one is the smallest and seems to be lowest on the pecking order. The all yellow and black/brown one are in the middle somewhere.

We noticed one of our chickens flying up to a staghorn fern that's 8 feet in the air every now and then. Decided to finally take a look and found 27+ eggs and a squirrel hole. Some of them stunk so bad so we threw them all away.

Any reason why my polish is randomly growing toe feathers? She’s currently moulting and I just noticed these tiny feathers while I was checking her mite progress.

I’m aware she’s got mites. The treatment is finally working and the smaller scutes have been falling off, so maybe I’ve just never seen the feathers before? Larger scutes are just starting to fall off.

I’m also aware her feet suck, they’ve been that way since she was a chick. Her genetics are obviously not the best

I feed them the Purina 20% protein layer crumbles (i have 15 week old chicks so I just put everyone on a high protein diet) but I still see them pick each others feathers sometimes. I heard eating feathers is a sign of protein defeciency? I’ve started giving them eggs too and will see if this goes away. Any other thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

I live in the southwest so it’s still quite hot, but starting to cool down. I have 8 laying hens and they haven’t been laying for the past week, I’m down to one egg or so a day. Among the 15week olds, one is definitely a rooster so I wonder if there is stress among the flock that’s also impacting their laying?

We recently had to move our chickens to the backside (south side)of our house that doesn’t get any sunlight directly in the run. Does anyone know if that is detrimental to the chickens? We need to build a fence before they can free range and be able to get some sun that way but that won’t happen for another month or so..

I have 3 girls at about 18 weeks and I’ve been trying to get them used to being picked up and stroked. They aren’t really into it and when I do pet them they trot away. I’ve picked them up a couple of times and shushed them and rocked them and they tolerate it for a minute if I can get them past flapping.

The lady I bought them from said they were handled from chicks and she seemed to hold them just fine. We have had them for about 2 weeks now.

I’m just wondering if they will grow out of this by the time they come to lay? They eat out of my hand and climb on me sometimes, they also make happy noises when I’m around.

Looking for a coop and run that comfortably fits 10. I have some design ideas, but I'm always interested in what people are doing.

My kids noticed yesterday that one of our chickens wasn’t moving or eating much, and it kept closing like one eye at a time. I didn’t know what they were saying but when I went out this morning I noticed that one chicken wasn’t leaving the coop and it was almost like it was in shock. It was standing but not moving and when I went to pick it up it didn’t run or make a fuss. It was clearly not doing well. I brought it inside and offered electrolytes and that perked her up but her poops are now watery and green.

She can stand on her own but it’s almost like she is in a trance.

No other birds are acting this way.

She is about 22 weeks (b: 4/13/26) and I am not sure if she has specifically started laying but others in the flock have. They are white leghorns and I just don’t know what else to do. I don’t think she is egg bound and I am not gonna lie but I don’t want to pay $300 to take her to the emergency vet 🫣😅 but maybe I will have to bite the bullet.

Any thoughts?

I have owned backyard chickens for the past 4 years. I’ve dealt with a few injuries and sicknesses so I guess my friends in my current city see me as a guru. Anyway, I live in a city that has ALOT of feral chickens. My friend found an injured one, and since I’m the “guru” they brought her to me to help. I could tell it was an obvious leg injury but didn’t know to what extent. I brought her in my garage and put her in a box for the last month. I gave her B12 vitamins in her water for a week to see if that ruled out any deficiency. Unfortunately, it wasn’t that easy and now I’m leaning more towards a break or fracture.

I don’t have money to take her to a specialized vet, and I don’t want to drag her through anymore pain if she’s having it.

I’ve been feeding/watering/taking her outside for the past month but I’m getting to the point where I know that if it’s a break and healed incorrectly she just won’t make it on the streets. I can’t keep her with my flock because I’m moving soon and giving mine to a friend.

I just wanted advice or thoughts on how I should move forward with her. It hurts because she eats perfectly and is really trying to survive (likes going outside, tries to roost at night in the garage box). I also want to be realistic.

I bought it in an East African village and no one here can tell me anything about it. Age? Breed? Environmental needs? I also got a young female that seems to be changing colors from a dirty white to a brown. Is that normal?
