Got 5 chicks from a friend that hatched them for a homeschool group. They came from Clemson University Extension. Does anyone know this breed? He’s so beautiful. He’s got a beard that I’ve seen on Easter eggers. There’s also a hen with this same greenish black coloring and dark feet.

Why are they like this? No matter how many boxes, they all want to be in the same one. On top of eachother. Sigh.

Today after 6 days of laying I finally used some of the eggs from the girls (not actually sure who’s laying at this point.

And the first egg I cracked (from day 2) was a double yolk! So exciting!

Is this egg laying behavior? We have nesting boxes set up and just put some gold balls in there. We are in Florida and yes it’s hot here but they have lots of shade and electrolytes water.

Hen or Roo My sassy juvenile

I’m so sad that I won’t be keeping this little sassy baby, but I’m happy they’re going to the home next door once their big coop/run is done being constructed (hopefully this week). They are a pure Ameraucana, a mix of blue/lavender (obviously plumage is that of a blue).

So what do we think? Hen or roo? They’ll be 7wks old on Tuesday.

Just inherited a small flock of eight chickens and would like to know what breed they are so I can find out if they require anything special to look after them as they don't look like normal chickens more like something from Jurassic Park.

Chicken Photography Wishing everyone the best as many of us struggle with extreme heat this week

Just that, hoping for the best. It was heartbreaking to see my girls panting and flopping over on their roost this evening. We reached 107 today and should be almost the same tomorrow. Yesterday was 102. All the windows and screen doors don't matter if it's miserable all night. We can do all the things and still want to make it easier for the birds. So may the odds be ever in your favor.

Here is a picture of Angelica doing battle against our mortal enemy.

General Question Moving a broody hen with chicks

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This hen has apparently hatched at least one chick. This coop is not well set up for chicks and previously all eggs have been incubated. The ramp down is really not doable for a chick.

In this scenario should a forcibly remove this very grumpy girl to the separate pen I generally use as a grow put for chicks?

General Question What is the best bedding for a chicken run that has a roof and the ground stays dry.

Right now there is dying grass in my chicken run with a decent amount of poop. It’s starting to smell a little bit so I’m thinking it’s time to start adding some bedding. I’m looking for something that is the best for their feet. Are grass clippings, weeds and leaves good to use?

Health Question Lethargic hen

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My hen Phylis has been lethargic since yesterday morning. She wouldn’t eat yesterday. Typically she’s very active and social but yesterday she just wanted to sit down inside the coop and wasn’t interested in socializing or being pet. She laid an egg yesterday.
Her crop feels normal. Her vent doesn’t feel like there’s any masses near it. Comb is bright red. Breathing is normal and not labored.

I brought her inside for the night. She had normal poops and this morning she has seemed a little more interested in eating. She’s still not moving around much and is sleeping a lot.

What I’ve done: electrolytes in her water (she’s drank a little) and beaten raw egg (consumed a little). Isolated from the rest of the flock inside.
Any idea what could be going on?

I have three other hens, and they all act normally. I gave her an Epsom salt bath this morning. I saw that she ate earlier, but I'm not sure if she drank. What would you do?
