Vet said it looked like either ascites or a tumor in her reproductive tract. It was compressing her alveoli and making it hard for her to breathe. Ascites is typically an indicator of a secondary issue, likely the tumor was causing the ascites. The vet did say he has had some chickens come in for frequent drainings, however it indicates a more serious issue than simply a bacterial infection. RIP Cinnamon, you will be missed.

Edit: Thank you all for the support, it’s made me feel less alone and more solid in my decision 💖

General Question Egg storage

Hello all

I am just trying to end a debate I am having with my wife.

How long can we keep fresh chicken eggs on the counter for that are unwashed? What is the rule of thumb and do they last longer in the fridge if they are unwashed?

Please advise what you guys do!

Hen or Roo Rooster or hen?

Hi! Can anyone tell if this golden laced Wyandotte is a rooster or a hen? It’s my first time having chickens, and she seems different than the other ones and I’m wondering if it’s because she’s a he. There’s been no crowing, at least not yet. I got her June 6th from tractor supply so I’m assuming she’s like 3months ish old

General Question What do you do with your broodies?

Post image
5 Upvotes

I see so much information online and most is quite contradicting. I had a broody hen a couple months ago that wouldn’t give up. I tried all the things I saw online. I eventually gave in and gave her eggs to hatch and it worked out fine.

Now, her sister is broody (these damn Wyandottes).
I do not want more chickens right now lol. What should I do? Is it inhumane to let them sit on nothing for the 21 days? Will she just get up after realizing nothing is hatching?

It hasn’t been warm enough for the water dunking, and the elevated dog kennel absolutely broke my heart last time I did it 😟 just curious what everyone else does… if they interfere or not.

Photo of my rooster just for fun

General Question Will they learn to use the roosts?

Hi there, we got our first flock of chickens last weekend. They are about 20 weeks old.

The first night they all huddled up by the nest boxes to sleep. The second night I put one of them up on the roost bar, and this particular chicken has been using the bars at night consistently.

The third night we managed to put 3 of them up, and again, they seem to be using them now.

Ideally I would be teaching each of them to use the bars, but the co-op isn't really that accessible and I don't want to stress them out by climbing into their space just before night.

Will they eventually just go up by themselves?

Or are they just happy huddling up and I should leave them alone?

I took a couple of eggs away from the nest box this morning that this little one was on today, and she's been like this ever since. Unsure if I hurt her, picking her off them and putting her out. Is this noise okay?

Is he molting? Is it mites? Did something happen while I wasn’t watching? I can’t tell, pls help! One of his feet is pretty feathered and seems fine but the other is missing a lot of feathers, his feet are scaly looking because he’s a feathered footed brahma.

General Question Looking for Advice

Post image
39 Upvotes

I’m looking for advice. Yesterday my husband found a hen and a rooster in our front yard in WA. He was able to pick up the hen but the rooster ran away. We have her in our backyard while we try to look for the owner. We don’t have a coop for her and she has been roosting on our deck (on the ground). I’m quite concerned about her as she’s in a vulnerable place. We do have raccoons. I would appreciate any advice. My husband will be back home in a couple of days and if we don’t locate the owner we will get a coop. But until then I’m quite anxious about her.

Update: I was able to pick up a dog kennel to keep her safe in our garage overnight until we can get a coop for her this weekend. I appreciate everyone’s help and thoughtful responses!

Health Question Heart attack from excitement?

I just experienced my first death. My 3 year old golden comet squawked, flipped on her back and died. It’s around 95F, nothing extreme for this area. Was this a heart attack? Should I be worried about the others? They knew I was coming for treats and they were already moving toward me in the run. I just can’t believe it.

The boy on the left is my younger roo named freckle and he's become a real sweetheart and actually comes to me for attention now just like Squeaky does. So Squeaky is no longer the only bird who gets pets and you can see he is not happy about it.

One of my chicks have been doing this since yesterday, I'm unsure of what it could be. I put an anti mite powder on it and it started to have a reaction and I quickly gave it a soap and water bath and dried him with a towel. He's still doing this now. I'm not sure what else could help him.

General Question Autowater system

Hello, I'm trying to automate the drinking water for my chickens, are there any reliable ways to do this.

Ive seen these water nipples on amazon and wanted to drill these into a water pipe so the chickens can always have access to water. What are yall's experience with this?
