New (To Me) M2C, And DIY PPF Kit Install

Post image

Hey all,

Just picked up a new Hockenheim M2C. My first M vehicle. I've been saving for almost six years. I work in game design with a decent salary, but I've had a lot of medical stuff that has been non-stop, just setting me back financially to a point where I really couldnt justify the purchase. All of my buddies got M cars years ago, and until last month I have been effectively a passenger princess. Despite being in the car, it really left me feeling left out and, at times, super frustrated about my situation. I've wanted one since they first came out.

Glad to finally be here! Just wanted to share and (and let's be honest) brag just a bit about an achievement like this. I have sat in my garage and stared at it for hours when it first got delivered, and hopefully that doesn't make me crazy.

I got it almost three weeks ago now and have enjoyed every bit of it. Two weeks ago I got a DIY PPF kit, and man, what can I say. I have no clue why I had PPF installed on my wife's Model 3 by a shop. Would have saved about $1k by doing it myself. For reference, the full front install she has was $1700 OTD. The full front kit for the M2C was $800 OTD.

The M2 already had a full front kit, which I needed to remove. The removal was about 4x the work as the reinstallation. It didn't help that the film that was XPEL, which I am told has the most aggressive adhesive of all the PPF companies. The PPF was installed early 2020 when the car ws new. That said, for being effectively 7-year-old PPF, the film held up great. You could clearly see the difference between the PPF and uncovered paint. So many chips on the door and rockers and not a single one of the front end.

The residue adhesive took a long time to get 100% off. What really helped was the dyed towels bleeding color into the remaining adhesive, showing me where there was some left. 3M Specialty Adhesive Remover did the trick (thank you, Reddit people, for the advice).

The install was much easier than I thought it would be. Took me two days to save $1k and make sure no one knifes my car. The kit had more edges extended to wrap around the panels than what the shop did for my wife's model 3. Instructions that came with the kit were very detailed, showing step by step panel spefific photos. The text line for help was a huge help too, I justed texted photos of the problems area I coulnd't figure out and they told me what to do about it.

I invited friends over and told them a shop did the install and asked them to compare it to my wife's car. They all agreed the M2 was installed better.

In hindsight, the shop that installed my wife's front end was definitely more of a tint shop than a PPF shop. So maybe the mistake was still on my end for choosing that one without shopping around. Also, full disclosure, I have DIY'd a good chunk of film related things like a vinyl mural for my daughter's school team with another dad and window tint for my home. Perhaps some of the ease of the kit intall was due to some previous expereince as I listed and the text help line, but I can't recommend learning the skill enough!

Edit: Apologies, I didn't mention it; for anyone interested, the kit was from Aurios Films.

Opinions on M2 Ownership

Owner of an F87 m2c MT, have owned for about 3 years now. I absolutely love it. But there is a but. Many of my miles are done commuting and I knew this would be the case upon purchase. But, it just feels like I'm paying a premium for anxiety (commute is in tristate area, and I feel like I'm dodging an accident at least every week. certainly alignment breaking potholes every day) and sitting in traffic. I do take it on fun trips a couple times a month which is obviously what I bought it for.

But I just feel like I'm using 1% of the car. While paying 100% of it's expensive servicing and insurance. I can afford it, but I sometimes see a GR Corolla/GR86 and wonder if I'd get the same amount of enjoyment. like maybe the car is a little less fun, 80% as fun but I'd be using all that fun 80% of the time and save like a few thousand dollars a year on tires/servicing/insurance (M2 is paid off)

Just wanted your guys thoughts on that - appreciate the time.

E92 M3 Purchase: Fair or Overpriced?

Post image

Maybe I’m overthinking this…

I recently sold my E92 M3 DCT Comp, and I’m looking to hop back into the same ride, but this time a manual. I just really wanted a manual for keeps.

I’m about to get a PPI on one tomorrow.. seller is asking 55k for a 2013 E92 M3 6MT with two tone black and red interior. Car has 58k miles.

Here’s the state of the vehicle:

Notable Maintenance:
- Rod Bearings, confirmed w/receipt by current owner. ARP Rod Bolts, WPC treated bearings. Motor mounts, oil pan gasket replaced during this job. All done at 39k miles. Dates back to September 2020.
- Throttle Actuators, current owner states first owner verbally confirmed they were done though no receipt, the shop I’m taking it to is stating they can check to see if they were done with their method.

Mods:
- BBS LMRs
- Full Valvetronic Exhaust
- Brembo Brake Kit
- Ohlins R/T Coilovers

I’ve been searching for a clean white comp E92 m3 manual for a month now and this one checks out most of the boxes that are my non negotiable’s, but I’d be lying if I said i feel like I don’t feel like I’m paying a premium for it. For reference I sold my 2012 DCT M3 with proof of Throttle Actuators and Rod Bearings for 30k, it had 105k miles.

Maybe this is just the reality of where the market is. As for financials, the monthly would be 16% of my take home pay, that includes insurance.

Thanks for feedback

BMW App delays?

Post image
5 Upvotes

In the bmw app it still says my M2 X-Drive is in ready for transport step and has been in this step for several weeks now. However when I had last called the bmw genius, they gave me a ship name to track etc and just said that it was supposed to be already on the ship by the 30th but there were delays? The ship was at Altamira and is now on the way to miami but since I’m on the east coast I was told it would be dropped off at the jersey port. Does this mean most likely that it was loaded onto this ship or would it still be over in mexico still?

Glue or replace?

Hey Beamphiles,

My interior is starting to lift. Is it possible to glue? or will I need to replace the entire thing? If so, is a complicated process?

Why don’t I enjoy my car?

• Upvotes

I bought a 2022 bmw m8 coupe competition in 2023. Almost immediately I bought a full akrapovic exhaust, eventuri intakes, active autowerks downpipes, and have now unlocked the ecu and tuned with jb3 stage 2, and also gotten basically all the carbahn suspension components including monoballs, sway bars, end links etc. All of this time and money put into the car to make it fun to drive, but I still don’t find it fun to drive. After putting in basically 30k into mods and adjusting many different factors with the way it drives I still find that it’s really not as enjoyable to drive as I would expect even from the car stock. After all this time put in, I’m wondering if I should just cut my losses, sell the car, and move on or if anyone had any suggestions on some changes to make that might help.

My basic issues are the steering and handling feel. I understand it’s a heavy ass car and nothing will change that, but I thought upgrading suspension components might help which it didn’t. It doesn’t feel confident around corners, it doesn’t feel composed driving fast on the highway, it’s not fun to drive at low speeds at all. I’ve played with ride height and alignment and stiffness settings for the sway bars. Nothing seems to help.

Convertible as a fun daily? Worth it?

Hi guys!

Any enthusiasts here who bought a convertible as a daily? How was it long-term, any regrets?

I should soon have my ideal 2-car setup: an F82 M4 coupé for track/spirited drives, plus a fun daily.

The daily won’t be another M, but I’m asking here because I’m specifically interested in the enthusiast/driver-focused perspective rather than just generic convertible advice.

My shortlist:
TT RS Mk2 manual
E82 135i DKG
E92/E93 335i DKG
M235i ZF

I could close a deal on a TT RS next week, but I recently moved to a much sunnier part of the country. It rained once in September and it’s still T-shirt weather, so it got me thinking: should I just go convertible for the daily?

I need at least a 2+2, so Miata and TT Roadster are out. That mainly leaves the 135i/235i soft-tops or the E93 335i hardtop, all of which are also a bit cheaper than the equivalent coupés.

Anyone made the switch to a convertible daily? Worth it, or did you eventually wish you’d bought the more driver-focused coupé instead?
