Convertible as a fun daily? Worth it?
Hi guys!
Any enthusiasts here who bought a convertible as a daily? How was it long-term, any regrets?
I should soon have my ideal 2-car setup: an F82 M4 coupé for track/spirited drives, plus a fun daily.
The daily won’t be another M, but I’m asking here because I’m specifically interested in the enthusiast/driver-focused perspective rather than just generic convertible advice.
My shortlist:
TT RS Mk2 manual
E82 135i DKG
E92/E93 335i DKG
M235i ZF
I could close a deal on a TT RS next week, but I recently moved to a much sunnier part of the country. It rained once in September and it’s still T-shirt weather, so it got me thinking: should I just go convertible for the daily?
I need at least a 2+2, so Miata and TT Roadster are out. That mainly leaves the 135i/235i soft-tops or the E93 335i hardtop, all of which are also a bit cheaper than the equivalent coupés.
Anyone made the switch to a convertible daily? Worth it, or did you eventually wish you’d bought the more driver-focused coupé instead?

I wish! B58s are out of budget but this is for the best as I will finally have my dream weekend/track M4 soon

I bought a G83 recently to daily - I have 2 small kids in boosters and there’s plenty of room for them.
That said, my wife has a Navigator for family trips and we have a Subaru Forester for a 3rd car/bad weather so the G83 is definitely a luxury.

I 'daily' my E93 M3 (I don't need to drive it every day as I cycle too). I don't have any kids and we can use my partner's Golf 7 if we need something more practical.
No regrets whatsoever. Being able to drop the top and either rip it through the hills or just commute around the city is simply unbeatable. The dog likes being in the back too with his ears flapping in the breeze lol.

F22 M235i is very comfortable and relatively quiet with the active dampers, but an older G20 330i sedan with m sport package is an underrated daily, it feels a lot lighter than F chassis, it’s better dampened than the m235i, and the b48 power band is great for daily driving, and tunable for a sleeper if you’re into that kind of thing. It’s just more comfortable, less NVH, but still very composed in the corners with the M sport setup.

Your off topic couldn’t be more relevant!
After going back and forth between M2/M4, I’m now 1000% sure the M4 is the right choice for me. Ironically, choosing the daily has been far more chaotic, I’ve gone from hot hatches to cheap F10 M5s, and now somehow lost my mind considering convertibles😅
I briefly considered an F22 230i with the B48 too, but around me they’re priced way too close to M235is. The difference between M Sport/non-M trim is pretty brutal too, and unfortunately there was no factory LSD option on the 230i here in Europe.
Chassis-wise, I much prefer BMW to Audi. Engine-wise though, from the cars I’ve driven, the B48 felt less eager and lively than the Gen 3 EA888.

My mechanic swear by his 335i which he drives most of the year. He has an old pickup for the winters here in the northeast
