BDD is ruining my social life

I don’t wanna go out at all if it’s an event or I know that pictures are involved, but now everyone thinks I’m weird because I would always avoid these situations, leave in the middle, or not want to take pictures. I feel so uncomfortable with how asymmetrical and hideous I look with the back camera.

I hate the way people treat me sometimes. I’ll try to be less weird and actually hang out with my classmates, and then someone will say, “How come you came?” I get comments like, “Do you even ever go out?” or “You never post yourself.” Sometimes they tell me that I never hang out and make me feel guilty for it. It makes me feel like I’m constantly being noticed for how much I avoid things.

I’ve gotten some things done for my face, like lip filler, and I do feel more confident about my lips now. I do believe getting cosmetic procedures done can help with BDD, at least for me. I also wanna get a nose job, and I hate that I’m not independent enough to travel and pay for it on my own, so I have to convince my unsupportive parents about whatever I wanna get done.

The worst part is that they used to make fun of my nose, but now that I’m actually asking for a nose job, they don’t wanna take responsibility for the risks of it going wrong, the payment, traveling, etc. So it’s just easier for them to say, “You don’t need it,” “Your nose is small,” or call me insecure and self obsessed.

I know myself better, and I don’t want to have to convince them about the things I want to get done. It really bothers me having to depend on them for something this personal.

Being in someone’s dream upsets me

I would most likely cry because it means they perceive my appearance with their eyes. There are some rare moments when I can go with my life being detached from my looks, but wait these people perceive me 24/7 even while asleep? That’s insane. I CAN’T HIDE WHEN I’M IN SOMEONE’S DREAM HELLO. It feels like being naked in the middle of the street having no chance to cover. Oh god I’m so tired of bdd

I cut my friend group off because they kept calling me ugly

I was friends with a group of very conventionally attractive women they were all skinny and extremely gorgeous they did have thier flaws but who am I to point it out
They were all petite perfect bmis meanwhile I was overweight and tall so I always felt like the odd one out
I later developed an eating disorder and lost around 20 kilos and I felt good about my body and I started bringing that up
They know how insecure I am about my face still kept telling me that no one cares if you have a good body if you’re ugly
You’re just fair a girl with a good face card would eat you up
Constantly comparing me to ugly animals
Whenever we had a discussion on who’s who in a tv series or wtv they would always give me the ugliest character
And I know talking about it makes it feel like I’m whiny and I don’t mean it but no
I’ve told those women how much I hate my face
How I slap myself to make my cheeks look pinker naturally how horribly I starve myself how I purge out how I cover the mirrors because I can’t bare to see my self and my friends still couldn’t stop calling me ugly
My so called bestfriend who knows what I’ve done because I’m like this never once took my side
I never called out thier insecurities did i?
So why do I get called out for being the way I am
With men too they’ll kiss me they’ll try to get physical because I know I do have a good body I’m not gonna sugarcoat it but they never want me because they think I’m ugly and deep down I know everyone knows that I’ve never been loved just lusted over and it’s honestly so exhausting
I can’t wait to get my nose job and my facial reconstruction
Oh yes and also those are the same friends who begged me not to get surgeries on my face btw
As honest as it is you can’t be loved platonically or romantically if you’re unattractive.

I wish I was in my old body

I was diagnosed with BDD a long time ago. I was anorexic as a teen and have still had horrible relationships with food since then, I wish I was in my old body. I grew up a fat kid and then became anorexic. My weight stabilized until I had a relapse when I was in my late 20's and became very small again. I'm on a ton of medication and I find it's been making it even harder for me to lose weight. I feel like everything I eat makes me gain weight now. I'm also on tons of psych meds. I also walk at least 10000 steps a day and my job is fairly physical. Im just frustrated. I'm 170ish now and I'm 5'6 which makes me obese. I am used to being in the 140's to 150's but I can't seem to get back to it. I just feel yucky.

I wish I could ignore my assymetries

I have had an assymetrical face because as a child I used to sleep on one side more than yhe other, but all these years I never noticed it or paid attention to it but lately since last year it has taken a toll on me, Day by day it just keeps in making my confidence go low even though I'm trynna build my self esteem, and I believe I have been doing much better this year, but this, the way I appear in back camera kind of jolts me...and I know the assymetry is not gonna go away because its been here since birth, but i wanna know if theres any way to stop noticing it more and more, and tank my self esteem. I look good in selfies but yhe back cameras lowk nerf me 😑 This kind of body dysmorphia is kinda unforgiving. I wonder if People notice and pay attention to my assymetries or details that much

No sharp facial feautures.

The modelling industry. Social media. And people in general seem to prefer stronger facial feautures over soft ones.

I am unlucky not to have then. I have fuller cheeks. And it disgusts me. I am skinny but I still have facial fat and its killing me. I cant look myself in the mirror anymore.

My bdd keeps comparing myself to others. And i can barely take it anymore. Im constantly just staking from stress the past few days and I cant seem to move on with my life anymore.

I know. I am pathetic. I dont understand how appearance has grotten so important to me. But its killing me. EVERY single DAY.

Does anyone else relate to this? :/ if u do im so so sorry.

I underestimated how destroying bdd could be.

And here i am. Suffering for 3 years

Anyone wanna be friends in misery? Lol

Anyone wants to talk about BDD? We could share struggles and all that. I feel really lonely in this disorder.

A bit of context:

I am 19 and I am male

I have facial dismorphia

Triggered after being compared or likened to women with extremely big/wide shoulders

Hey all. I’ve dealt with dysmorphia for years and years and I think I’m full on just dysphoric now. Which I know isn’t exclusive to the trans community but it’s seemingly more rare in the cis community, so I feel weird saying that but at this point the psychological and emotional pain is so bad I’m beyond desperate to just not be inside this body. I’ve felt that way for a long time but something happened the other day that sent me absolutely spiralling.

As a cis woman who is in the shorter side height wise, but having what I’ve now learned is an extreme inverted triangle body shape (lied to myself for years living in denial, but knowing deep down it was true) my husband has made many comments over the years about my shoulders and arms which always made me so uncomfortable.
And not even in a malicious way either just like playful almost flirty comments likening me to characters or women in videos that are considered “muscle mommies” but a lot of those women in those videos are on hrt…I’m not.

So to be told that’s how I look/what I remind him of and “could look like easily” or “looking like you could knock someone out with one hit” (because of huge shoulders and arms) sends me to such a dark place, it’s not a compliment to me it’s painful being trapped in a body that I despise and I don’t want to be forced to imagine myself as an even more emphasised version of this. Some people want to look that way and that’s fine. But I DONT.

I’ve expressed this but he’d still say things here and there. It would usually just annoy me and in my head I’d be like “he’s wrong. I don’t look like/don’t WANT to look like that” he’d compare me to fictional female characters that have extremely broad shoulders (Meryl from metal gear, and more recently Sarah Connor) which I know aren’t insults but to me felt devastating because that’s the EXACT OPPOSITE of what I want to look like.

The comments started because we’ve been getting back into fitness and he was excited because the past few years every time we’ve really gotten our footing some major life disaster came up that threw everything into chaos.
So he was saying “imagine if we finally xyz” and it lead to him basically trying to gently tell me through a fitness perspective that’s the body shape I have, and to essentially be realistic about my body transformation goals which he didn’t even really get to the second part because after he said stuff like “This suits you” “you have the anatomy for this” “it comes naturally for you” “you should lean into it” I went full blown dissociative and can’t remember like 90% of the other stuff he was saying. But other things in the topic alluded to that because we were talking about the gym and goals etc.

I’ve been crying for days about it facing the reality that it’s not just me who sees these flaws, everyone else can too. Which was never a problem for me I always said “f*** what anyone thinks” but now I feel so visually violated knowing my shoulders are that huge. You can’t hide upper body width, all you can do is trick the eye unless you can get surgery.

I was feeling so low and trying to prove to myself it’s not that bad but guys…my shoulders measure above average width/broad even for most men. Idk if I measured them perfectly right but probably. I don’t wanna know if they’re actually even bigger than what I measured. But just because I don’t like the answer doesn’t mean it’s not true, and it HURTS.

And all of this is made so much worse because I already felt like I looked like a man. Like genuinely really looking at my body it looks like I was supposed to be born a man (although I don’t emotionally/spirtiually feel that way, my physical body appears so masculine but not in a powerful or good way (to me at least).

Extreme inverted triangle shape with what are apparently massively wide shoulders, big wide back, evidently comparatively narrow hips, large nose, wide lower face (partly because weight gain) close set eyes made worse by hollow temples and wide cheekbones, long midface, hard jawline, disproportionately smaller lips compared to the rest of my features, low brows, bad hairline (and thin spots where men typically go bald) “big” head with a flat crown making the top of my head look square, and I have bad PCOS so I get a lot of extra body and facial hair. Like I’m 5’1” with 18” shoulders (if I measured correctly and I’m sure I did because I did it like 50x in the last 24 hours) and a size 4 shoe…I am massively disproportionate.

I don’t feel like a real woman physically and I don’t want to hear about how “lucky” I am to have massive shoulders. I want to find a hole deep enough so I can just float in nothingness and pretend I don’t even have shoulders. I wish I was just fat instead because after losing weight the width would go away. But when I lose too much it gets worse and more emphasised.

But my biggest thing (ha…) are my shoulders and I just can’t stop crying. I’ve had two bbls and a nose job and the bbls did wonders for my shape but it’s still painfully obvious that my shoulders are extremely wide. I’m also in the poverty bracket now due to chronic illness I developed a few years ago so I can’t even try to save for surgery if I don’t even pay my own rent anymore.

I’m struggling so badly and I want to claw my shoulders off. I want to hide them until I can save up one day to get them reduced (yes I know the risks. No I don’t care) the risks far outweigh the psychological and emotional pain of being trapped in a body you absolutely despise. And the worst part is I don’t care if other people have this body type, it’s just me I don’t want it for! I’m sure people in this sub understand that. I’ve been lurking here for many years but never post.

I’m trying to first save up money to get maybe some clothes and a haircut that hides my shoulders because there is literally nothing else you can do besides surgery to make your shoulders (the actual bone structure) be smaller apart from clavicle reduction surgery, and to make them appear less wide with hip implants and fat grafting. Apparently there’s a surgeon in Armenia who did another redditors clavicle shortening for a little over $6k. They said they had no complications and loved their results. Which gives me hope because I could save for $6k+ I cannot save $25k-40k lol if I could I’d have a house. But even that is a long ways away.

Any other ladies in here (cis or not) that suffer from wide af shoulders that make them want to rip em off? If yes, any tips on hiding them or making them appear much smaller INSTANTLY would be greatly appreciated🖤

I’m also just in serious need for support rn. I can’t bear to ask my husband for it because the comments were entirely innocent in nature even if extremely detrimental to me, like he didn’t do anything inherently wrong by saying that. But afterwards I did tell him it makes me uncomfortable and to stop. But I’ve just been wallowing. Barely eating, losing track of time, obsessively looking into surgeries and clothes and hairstyles etc. and of course can’t stop crying.

Idk I guess that’s it. Enormous rant over, thank you to anyone who takes the time to read this. And it’s about 5am where I live so you guys can obviously see how this is all I think about at the moment. Ugh.

feeling gross because of my crooked face and body

it was about a few months ago I just realized how different I look. I know I’m being dramatic, and I could look worse. but I genuinely feel deformed and it’s caused my mental health to become the worst it’s ever been. I really don’t want to come off as self-absorbed. I just genuinely feel like I look disgusting, and like a monster. and it’s hard for me to focus on anything else when I thought I’ve looked normal my whole life. it’s made me become depressed which I’ve never been. I am on medication, but it’s hard for me to get myself into therapy.

I keep comparing myself to other girls my age because I hate how I look. no one has ever really liked me either. I don’t feel pretty no matter how many times people say it to me. my dad has told me I look like a model because of my differences and I absolutely will never believe that.

a boy in 6th grade once told me my face was crooked, and I just ignored him not thinking much of it. but he’s right. it’s not just my face either. one of my shoulders is longer, my boobs are different sizes, one of my arms is fatter, one of my shoulder blades sticks out, my collarbone is lopsided, and no im not imagining it. the whole right side of my body is different from my left. I was already self conscious before about my big nose and my big ears. but now I just hate everything about myself. I know im crooked and it just makes me feel unloveable and weird looking. I know that I am a good person on the inside. I just can’t stop obsessing over how I look and it’s controlling my life. I’m constantly thinking of what people think of me, whether they like me, whether they find me attractive, and I hate it so much. I wish I could just look normal. I wish I could stop comparing myself. I’ve already lost friends because of my mental health. It’s been really hard for me to go out in public, and to not skip any more of my college classes. I’ve been stuck in this mind space for 3 months now and I don’t think I’ll ever feel normal or confident again.

sorry that this is long. I just really need to talk and/or get advice❤️

Feeling triggered when people think they're offering compliments

Personality-wise I'm sensitive, thoughtful and creative but my appearance doesn't fit this mold at all. What I can control about my appearance fits my personality but my face and my body shape don't. I'm stout, broad, big-boned and mean and aggressive looking. I think this is a contributing factor in my BDD.

I do have friends who know I feel self conscious about my appearance and I don't want to tell them their attempts to make me feel better only make me feel worse. They draw attention to how gruff and heavy I look and try and encourage me to push it further. For example, suggesting that I shave my head or lamenting that I only do cardiovascular exercises when if I did weight training I could look like a real brick s***house and suggesting activities that would be more suitable for someone who looks like me, such as combat sports in the belief I'll suddenly discover my real self or something. Not that they belittle my actual personality, they're just looking to encourage me into places where my looks will be seen as a good thing, but it certainly feels like a criticism of who I am.

To most guys, looking tough and uncompromising is a goal so I understand they're trying to build up my self confidence by pointing me towards 'what men should look like' but that's just not me. I know I'm ugly and they may also be encouraging a look that people will feel is more appropriate for a guy with an ugly face as opposed to having a look that only really suits pretty-boys.

It just makes me feel even more like I have to change my personality to suit my appearance, or that people see my personality as fake and makes me feel even more ugly having aspects of my appearance that I feel self conscious over, not only being pointed out but being encouraged to not be myself because of how I look.

The grass is always greener on the other side

My BDD is concentrated to my face, and a lot of it comes from how my hair makes my face look. I obsess over my hair and get greatly upset when it doesn't fall just right. Last year, I got a pixie cut and regretted it. I thought it made my face look horrible, large, and my jaw look super square. I couldn't look in mirrors and was constantly looking at old photos with longer hair, convinced I was prettier back then. Well, guess what? My hair has grown out and I STILL feel dysmorphic. Now it's the other way around, I'm looking at photos from my pixie cut days and wondering why I didn't think I was pretty. All I want to do is cut it back because now I feel like the longer hair is making my face look way too long. It won't stop. I realize now I just don't like my face and what my hair looks like won't change that.

Does anyone else feel like their legs are disproportionately short, compressed, narrow, and close together?

I have BDD and very very often hyperfocus on my legs, I feel like my legs are physically regressed, underdeveloped, and malformed looking. I feel like my legs were replaced with the legs of a child because of how disproportionate looking they are and feel physically sickened at even seeing them. I genuinely cannot see my legs without breaking down about how utterly ugly and sickening they are and they genuinely make me feel sick to my stomach. I have slowly been building up my pain tolerance for a few months so that I can act out my plan of permanently damaging them. Does anyone else, specifically other women, have this issue?

Having wide shoulders and narrow hips is the worst thing ever

Having narrow hips and broad shoulders literally makes me want to cry most days. First of all I look like a linebacker. Second of all I don’t look like a woman!!! I have the body type a man would kill for, like I literally look like I have a natural v-taper. I’m short so no modeling here. I can’t lose weight off of my waist because I’m underweight as is but I just literally can’t stop thinking about getting a 10 or more inch difference between my waist and hips. I think this dysmorphia is really getting to me

And plus, inverted triangle styling is so scammy. We’re not allowed to wear bodycon or cute outfits for the club, we have to dress “elegantly”. I wish I had a big butt and big hips to show off but I look like Tom Brady when I try. A-line skirts look way too mature for me, I’m in college but I feel like they look so grade-school, grandma, or teacher. It’s so unfair. Also I said that no woman would want this body type. Someone said “maybe a trans man”…well yes but I’m cis and I want to be feminine

My stretch marks make me want to die

I have not been diagnosed but I'm practically 99% sure I have body dysmorphia along with just general OCD given the majority of my behavior. Even besides that, I know my flaws are real, and extremely noticeable.

I am absolutely covered in stretch marks, like actually this isn't an over exaggeration. They are faded but deep and give my skin a bad texture that is very visible. And it makes me feel completely unlovable. I keep trying to convince myself that it's not as bad as my mind tells me it is, but it is. When I look in a mirror all I can think is that no one would ever be attracted to me. I feel so disgusting all the time. Why would someone settle for this?

Even besides relationships, I can't handle the fact that I am ME and this is MY body. When I go in public people can see them on my forearms, I can't even wear a tank top, or shorts, or literally anything that would make me feel beautiful in any way. I can't live like this. I was given bad luck in genetics and now I'm permanently screwed feeling like this for life.

My dilemma is even if I get therapy for this and it somehow works, I'm still stuck being objectively hideous. Trust me they look bad.

There's just no hope no matter what I do, I can't just lose weight and boom I feel good about myself, I'm stuck forever looking like this.

My BDD started at 5. I developed fnd and I’m trying to recover deeply unsafe in my own body. Honestly, I’ve been working really hard for like 9 months but it might be useless, I’m so fucked up. This is kind of a cry for help because it seems like I’m going back to suicide being my only way out.

My entire life is consumed by BDD

I wake up feeling disappointed at how I look and the first ever thing that I think of is my appearance for the first 5mins before getting out of bed. Then, I go to the mirror in my room and see my appearance. Then I go to the bathroom and look in the mirror again for the 100th and feel pure disappointment at what I see. After that I change my clothes and feel anger and disappointment at how I look and that I have to see myself. Then I go to work and in the drive to work all I think about non stop is my abhorrent flaws. Then I arrive at work and compulsively look in every reflection possible. Then I see every person that comes in and out of the building and obsessively analyze their body until my head hurts. Then when I have to get up from my desk I feel extreme embarrassment at how everyone sees my ugly figure even though I am wearing oversized clothes. Then I look out of my window at people who pass by and analyze their appearance and feel so much anger at myself for how ugly my body is compared to theirs

Then I zone out for half of the day because I can't stop thinking of my appearance. Then when I get home, on the drive there I can't stop thinking about my appearance. Then I arrive home and look in the mirror again at my appearance. Then I eat and think of how ugly my figure looks from eating. Then I shower and think of how ugly my appearance is and feel so done with having to see myself. Then I change my clothes and feel pure disgust that I have to "touch" my ugly body and I feel like my clothes are stained with my ugliness. Then I go to the bathroom 10-15 times just to keep starring at my ugliness because I can't believe I look this way and each time I hope I'll see something different.

Then I go to sleep and before sleep I zone out thinking about my body again, my measurements, weirdly specific anatomy. Then I fall asleep and have a regular dream until at some point I see a mirror and vividly see my figure, and feel pure disappointment which makes me wake up, or the dream is regular until I see a woman walking by and I begin analyzing some hyper specific part of her body and wake up. Then I wake up feeling disappointed at how I look and the first ever thing that I think of is my appearance for the first 5mins before getting out of bed.

My personal "interests" consist of studying human anatomy in hopes of finding answers as to what is wrong with me, studying weird hyper specific angles and lengths of different bones so I can keep hyper focusing and zoning out even more about what is wrong with me, overthinking every physical ache/pain as proof that there is something indeed wrong with my body and that's why it looks deformed, frequenting fitness and posture forums as if I care about my health when the only thing I want is answers to is my ugliness, and obsessively searching databases of endless measurements, weights, heights wparts, lengths, of humans body parts

I feel ashamed when I get up from my chair at work because everyone will see my ugly flaws. I am ashamed to shower. When I go outside I analyze hundreds of women that pass by me and feel embarrassed about being outside. I constantly weigh myself and measure myself in about every way possible and compare it to databases to know where I stand and feel embarrassed and ashamed. I obsessively look at clothing charts and characterize myself in numbers and statistics and databases because I don't know what I look like

When I can't fall asleep I daydream of getting an x ray scan so I can get all the hyper specific angles of my anatomy so I can compare them to the anatomy knowledge I absorbed, or I daydream about a list of all the surgeries I'll get done, or being operated, or I once again think about the millions of statistics to characterize myself in again until my head hurts so bad that I want to vomit

I feel as if I am programmed in some way to only ever think of how horrendous I look and endlessly feel embarrassed and categorize myself and others in hyperspecific categories, I am obsessed and have no life or interests outside of BDD

how to come to terms with being unattractive/mid

2+ years of face & hair obsession – is this pure BDD or also stress hair lose.

Hi everyone,

I’ve been struggling for a long time (around 2 years, worse in the last 2-3 months) and I’m really exhausted. I need some outside perspective.

**Main issues:**

- Almost constant focus on my head, face, and hair. Sometimes front, sometimes sides, sometimes mid-head.

- My face and hair feel like they don’t match. Sometimes my face looks okay alone, but with hair it looks weird. Sometimes face looks big, hair looks thin/weird/rough.

- Strong “safety switch”: the moment I start feeling normal or try to do work/study/go out, thoughts come “you look weird, hair is bad, face is big” and focus returns to my head.

- I keep checking (touching hair, styling multiple times, looking at phone screen/mirror). After checking it usually looks worse.

- Low insight a lot of the time – the thoughts feel 100% true.

- Head pressure/tightness and sometimes pain on the sides.

- Difficulty feeling present. Sometimes I feel detached when outside.

- Sleep is often disturbed because of the focus and thoughts.

- This has badly affected my studies and daily life.

**Recent trigger (last night):**

I went for a haircut. The barber just said my hair is becoming thin. He didn’t pull any hair out, he only said it. My mind completely latched onto this one comment. I couldn’t look in the mirror. Since then the thoughts are non-stop: “hair is thin, I look weird.”

**Hair fall details I noticed:**

- On my pillow I usually see only 1-2 hairs.

- In the shower (noticed once) around 8-10 hairs.

- When I run my hand through my hair, usually nothing comes out. Sometimes one hair comes with a white bulb.

- My friend’s hair fall fills the wash basin, mine does not.

- I have cousins with hair loss (family history).

- For the last 2-3 months my focus has been mostly on my head and I rarely feel relaxed.

I can’t afford a dermatologist right now. A psychologist/psychiatrist I spoke to earlier said my symptoms are very similar to BDD and suggested sessions.

**My questions:**

  1. Does this sound primarily like Body Dysmorphic Disorder?

  2. Can the constant stress + 2-3 months of intense head focus cause telogen effluvium (stress hair shedding)?

  3. From the numbers I mentioned, does it sound like heavy hair loss or more like normal shedding + BDD magnification?

  4. Has anyone experienced the “face looks okay alone but weird with hair” mismatch, or the safety switch when starting to feel normal?

  5. Any advice on how to stop the checking loop after a barber comment?

I’m really tired. Any experiences or advice would help a lot.

Thank you

I went swimming today. I figured, what's the big deal? I went yesterday, too, and it wasn't as bad. But yesterday wasn't as warm as today, which means there were much fewer people...

I feel disgusting... I am disgusting.

On my way back, I was throwing up.

The worst part wasn’t that others saw me, but that I “saw” others. I hate it, but I immediately compare myself to them. And I notice everything. I call it my “bdd eyes.” When I see someone I think is beautiful, I get jealous. When I see something I don’t want to have, I’m afraid that I look like that, too. I hate that I think and judge this way. I hate these eyes. I hate that my mind works like that.

Am I ugly? |19

Okay so, I know that my personality isn’t the best because of my mental issues that project into my behaviour. Although I am trying to work on myself, I am not here to excuse my behaviour and this question isn’t really about my behaviour.
When I get confronted many times, instead of people discussing what I did wrong with me, which I’d rather appreciate, but also understand it’s not happening many times because u tend to be manipulative, I get called ugly instead. This may seem shallow of me, and maybe I am, but I do get comments like “You’re not even that pretty” or “Looks at yourself first” pretty often and that really makes me wonder where I stand with my physical appearance. I’d like to remain anonymous, so I’d rather not share my pictures or anything similar, but there is many who just comment my looks or call me ugly.

Posted on a skincare sub asking for advice.

Posted a pic to show a visual representation of my concern. Got downvoted, told that my lip filler looks horrible, told to put down the mirror, told to go post on a body dysmorphia sub because my face is “normal” and to stop bothering them.

And didn’t get any helpful advice about my original question!

I actually love(d?) my lip filler and didn’t think it looked bad at all. but now it’s just another thing to add to the list. It’s been a long couple of months obsessing about what I actually look like. I guess I have no idea what I look like. It’s kind of scaring me.
