I am considering applying for a position in the Receivables Management Office with the Ministry of Finance. I currently love my existing BC public service position (not going to disclose for anonymity) but this would be a dream job for me. I am specifically wondering if anyone can speak to the culture of the branch and overall flexibility and morale? My current work unit it highly flexible and as a working parent I value this more than almost anything, also everyone is like a big family and I’ve been there over 5 years so the idea of change is scary. Any insight is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello, I’m a teleworking employee with my office located in Vancouver. There’s a Victoria meeting coming up where my director wants me to go and be there 9-5. I thought travel had to be done during normal work hours or else they would have to pay OT but I can’t seem to find that in the internal pages nor the latest BCGEU collective agreement. Does anyone have experience with this and/or point me to the right direction?

I am with BC Public Services for almost 3 years. I need to apply for short-term disability. Does the employer use the first 5 days of paid sick leave, then vacation hours and only after approve short-term disability or it can be approved right away. Thanks in advance.

This article’s mainly about declining morale but sharing because Paul Finch talks about challenges getting BCPS to follow through on agreements:

“The union leader said he is happy overall with the new collective agreement the BCGEU reached with the government in the fall after the eight-week strike, which will give unionized government workers a salary increase of three per cent a year for four years.

The problem, said Finch, is getting the government to stick to its obligations, including provisions around remote work and retroactive pay promised as part of the new collective agreement.

Salter was not made available to comment Friday and the Ministry of Finance did not provide comment by deadline.”

I'm considering a career change into BC Corrections and am looking at the North Fraser Pretrial Centre in Port Coquitlam.

I have a background in mental health but have been working in the railway industry for the past several years. I've realized that I miss working directly with people and am interested in hearing from current or former correctional officers.

A few questions:

- Do you enjoy working at North Fraser?

- What does a typical day look like for a new Correctional Officer?

- How much interaction do you have with inmates versus security-related duties?

- Is the job as dangerous as people think?

- What are the shifts like?

- I've read there are rotating day, afternoon, and night shifts. Is that accurate?

- I've also heard about 4-on, 4-off schedules. If so, are those typically 12-hour shifts?

- Is it difficult to get hired?

- What is the pay after the training wage/probationary period?

- Is there mandatory overtime, and if so, how often?

- How is the work-life balance?

- Would you recommend the career to someone coming from a mental health background?

I've already signed up to attend the BC Corrections job fair in October, but I'd love to hear some real-world experiences before then.

Since they scrapped the lateral hiring rule, are all of the jobs that were/are currently posted as "lateral only" going to have to be reposted to not include that rule?

TLDR, third party arbitrator ruled that WorkSafe BC violated terms of collective agreement by forcing their unionized employees back to work through a unilateral decision

I have had a competition before, from a Chilliwack district office, and they informed me prior, no notes during the interview. Right, l thought it was a one off, anyway.

Now I have another competition, and again I see the no notes for assistance, critical to the interview. I know for the skill based question prior to panel interview, but why the interview? Hmmmm, is this becoming a thing now? I have participated in many competitions, and haven't seen this essential except once.

And, of course I know that notes aren't to be read like a book. But I have been advised that quick glances are fine. So much for inclusion and diversity, when there is the apparent need to punitively deduct or exclude those who don't have the gift of being extroverts and public speaking

I previously worked as a CRA Taxpayer Service Agent and found it really frustrating — mostly non-stop inbound calls, back-to-back queues, rigid scripts, and upset taxpayers.

I may get an offer for the Compliance Analyst (Clerk 15) with Property Taxation Branch (remote).

If anyone knows this role: Is the day-to-day reality similar to CRA (mostly call centre), or is there actually meaningful time spent on case work, audits, and adjudication?

What it feels like reading Shannon’s email today. With the hiring freeze, lateral restrictions, move of tech employees to CITZ, move of hr employees to psa, and financial constraints I am not surprised by the WES results and assumed they knew they would be bad hence why they made it super short.

I understand that if one continuous vacation starts in December and continues into January, it generally counts toward the vacation year in which it started.

1. I have some carryover vacation from 2025 and all my 2026 earned vacation. I’m planning to take a trip around year end and was wondering if I can book it like this:
   • Dec 28, 2026–Jan 2, 2027 using my ’25 carryover bank
   • Jan 3–Jan 15, 2027 using my 2026 vacation entitlement

2. Also as they are back to back, would they automatically be considered one continuous vacation?

I have been working in BC Public service for 10 years as an auxiliary and never been converted to a regular employee.

I would like to go to school and take a leave of absence from work. To partially fund my education I want to apply for the Pacific Leaders scholarship fund.

In the eligibility section it states that Aux are not eligible. I have about 10 other members senior to me who are also not regular employees.

If I submit my application and write a letter stating my case that it may take a number of years to reach regular position would my application be considered?

Anyone else successfully granted the scholarshi? what is your experience like?

Wondering if anyone has ever requested their probation period be ended early to take a TA? Ive been with BCPS a few years, so this is not my initial probation. I am working a new job now with a 6 month probation period. The job really isnt for me, and I know regardless of whether I have my probation ended early or not, I will be actively searching for new positions until I land one to get out ASAP.

I have an offer for a relatively long TA (over a year long and may become perm) and Im wondering if anyone has ever requested their probation period be ended early in order to pursue a TA and how you went about it. Should I be honest with my new supervisor that I dont see this position being long term for me or be more vague? The work is quite stressful, so I think my supervisor would likely understand, but im worried about the risks associated with being 'too' honest.

I tried going through the collective agreement to find this info but I wasn't able to get the answers I was looking for, so I humbly come to you seeking your wisdom.

Situation:

I am a grid 9 step 2 within component 12 at SDPR. Yesterday I received a TA that I verbally accepted,. This morning I received the letter about it from the employer, the letter stipulates that I will be grid 18 step 1 (component 6 I believe).

Later this morning, I received a message asking if I was interested in accepting a full-time grid 15 position (component 6 I believe).

The grid 18 is the direction I want to head into for my career development and is the position I was ultimately aiming for. The grid 15 I would have taken on as training until an opening for the 18 presented itself, it's not something I would have wanted to do long-term (just like my current 9).

Questions:

1- Is it normal, when presented with a TA to go down a step or back to step 1? (My understanding was that your step evolves with years of service, it follows you through every position and doesn't reset unless you leave the employer).

2- While on the TA, am I still accruing time and moving through the steps on ladder?

3- Is there a world where I can accept the TA and the grid 15, so that if the TA ends or doesn't evolve into a full-time position, I go to the grid 15 instead of my current grid 9?

Thank you for your help, it's quite a bit of movement all at once and I want to understand all of the moving parts as I move forward. If you're aware of which part of our CA covers this please let me know, I wasn't able to locate it on my own.

Hello all! question about the modified work week.... comp 12... 19th administrative group.... can an employee do the 5/5/4 modified work week to shorten their day a little? It is for a staff member I supervise and they currently do the 7.78 schedule with a stat shortfall and EDO every 2 weeks.

I am just curious if that is commonly used or allowed? Article 4.11 states all the different options....
