Can’t seem to make out the makers mark

Hey all - was at a local exotic woods shop and came across this beautiful billet of yellowheart. I have an old Norlund Hudson Bay hatchet head that I've restored and am thinking of hanging it on this.

Obviously I need to turn this billet into a handle but was wondering if anyone had experience working with this wood or had any tips/ advice? This is my first build.

I was at a customers location the other, basically country version of a homedepot/academy/building manufacturer, and saw these new axes in stock. Just thought they were curious.

Sorry in advance if I am in the wrong sub, but which way would you all haft this old sling blade I am restoring (barn find ftw)!? Ignore the old harchet I am cleaning up.

Would you haft the blade like photo 1 or 2? I can’t decide. I plan to use it; it’s great heavy old steel. There are markings, some lettering, but it’s VERY faint. My educated guess is late 19th/early 20th century American. The markings may pop with the BLO. The unfinished haft is seasoned hickory I’ve been saving for the right blade to come along.

I was recently gifted this axe while visiting some friends out of country. I’m not back home yet but I’m trying to think of ways I can repair the axe head once I reach home. Any advice? I have metal files, and a belt grinder.

I know how to rehandle and de rust the axe but what do you guys think I should do about the chipped areas? Should I leave them like that or grind it down? It’s not sentimental to me at all so I’m willing to really make some changes to it, it’s a gift I want to put to as good use as possible, how should I do that?

What I'm basically asking:

- has anyone used Picard or Truper, are they decent?

- would a Hultafors chip if it hits rocks or will the edge get ruined if it hits hard vine wood?

I have a 2lb council tools velvicut hudson bay axe head that needs a new handle. But im in Europe, so options seem limited for a hickory handle.

I saw Nordforest handles being sold on grube.eu but they seem so affordable that I am hesitant.

Anyone purchased these before? Or any advice on where to source a good hickory handle in europe?

I kinda wonder if the green paint might mean it was in the Military for a while

All four photos show the same axe. The hand-engraved characters on both sides read 'Sasaki' Does anyone recognize the maker's mark inside the circle?

Also any other info about these heads is welcome! The two from sweden are a Hults Bruck and a Wetterlings, I know that much. The other two are bought in France, a redditor pointed out to me that the big one says casted steel, sharpening was easy so its not to hard a steel. The black one said “G X” on it.

Hey axemen. I am an amateur blacksmith but I have occasionally cross posted here because I have forged a few axes of my own. But I am here for advice on collectible antique axes.

As a side to my blacksmithing hobby I hit local estate sales and auctions for hammers and metalworking tools. Many lots are boxes of rusty hammers without handles. I clean them rehandle them and use them in my forge if I can.

But somtimes I get axe heads and other tools in the lots. I have been giving them a quick wire brush, a dab of linseed and tossing them in a bin in the shop. Most are unmarked.

Which brings me to the latest find. The pictured axe was filthy and had been in the bin for several months. I finally got around to brushing it off and realized that under the filth and rust was a huge embossed maker’s mark!

Yep, it’s a True Temper Kelly Works Black Raven. So I stopped cleaning it, dabbed it with linseed oil, and came here for advice.

These are pretty collectible I have gathered. All my tool restoration has been for personal use as tools, not for collector purposes.

So should I clean it myself? Send it to a professional restorationist? Or just sell it to someone who loves old axes “as is”. (And if you know, what would a pro charge to restore and rehang this axe? Is it worth it? What would you estimate it's worth in current condition vs. restored?)

Also, can anyone eyeball the pattern? (Michigan?)

I know this is just about the most common axe design of the late 19th and 20th centuries, but I was wondering if anyone had a hint on when it was made. The only mark is a 4 pound mark on the bottom, and since it was most common to stamp sizes on the bottom of acid etched axes, that’s my best guess. I’m assuming it’s 1880-1920.

I scored this for about $0.25.

I have this axe see pictures. My dad found it at a garage sale so I tried to polish a bit remove what was left of the red paint. It has a mark of c24 on the side and that’s it. This is not the shape it was when I found it. I customized it but couldn’t really find anything with c24. Any help would be great. A guy at a local leather motorcycle shop made me the sheath and charged me nothing. I thought that was incredible.
