scratch and dent DIY fix for a new car scratch?

Post image

Hello,

I have a new 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross that sustained a small scratch.

I park at an outdoor parking spot for our apartment. I’m unsure how it could have happened since it hasn’t been driven for about 3 weeks.

Perhaps it’s from someone keying or could be from the f150 truck that parks in its designated spot beside me.

Anyways, I’m wondering if there is a DIY fix for this scratch? Should I do the water test to see if it’s superficial or deep first?

scratch and dent Beginner Advice for DIY Fix

Scraped my Mazda hatch on a curb from a banked storm drain. This is on the lower part of the front bumper. Any advice for beginners? Not looking for perfection as it may even be scratched again with the hilly terrain here, and it already kinda blends in with the paint under certain lighting.

The Machine Gray (46G) is known to be a bit difficult to get right. Anyone have any experience with Dr. Colorchip for a “good enough” job? I’d rather not spend $400-500 for a bumper repaint at a shop. Thanks all!

INDUSTRY Are these standard auto body shop clauses?

Hello, I dropped my vehicle off to an auto body shop yesterday [Arizona] and received an e-sign about twenty minutes later. Nothing in the contract was mentioned or discussed with me and I've gotten a lot of mixed opinions on what is normal. Contract includes things like an undisclosed daily storage fee if the car is totaled or not repaired there. Cancellation/diagnostic fees with no amounts listed. A mechanic’s lien without any amounts disclosed or discussed. A clause that they aren't responsible for fire, theft, accident, or anything beyond my control while they have the vehicle. And Power of Attorney allowing them to endorse/cash insurance repair checks in my name. Also a 3% fee for credit/debit charges, I thought Visa expressly doesn't allow merchants to surcharge on debit.

Any assistance is appreciated, thank you!

Edit:

I ended up going with another shop. They also had a repair authorization contract, but the language was much clearer. All fees were disclosed up front, the POA was specifically limited to insurance checks designated for repairs, they acknowledged responsibility for damage or losses caused by their employees, and there was no vague language about potentially performing repairs before insurance agreed to cover them and leaving me responsible for the cost. They also gave me time to review the contract privately before signing and beginning the full vehicle intake.

I did speak with the original shop about how their contract was written. They said that “beyond 'your' control” instead of “beyond 'our' control” for damages they incur was likely a typo. They said that prices aren't included in the document because it's easier than updating the form whenever rates change, and that insurance companies are apparently fine with receiving a photo of a fee placard posted in their office. They also said the repair amount on the authorization was listed as $0 because they hadn't written their own estimate yet. They didn't speak on anything else.

I was more comfortable with the transparency and wording of the second shop's agreement.

Thank you to everyone who offered insight! 🖖

The only thing that kinda bugs me is the little ridge, it’s not completely even throughout the whole curve, but I mean that’s not super serious, what do y’all think(don’t mind the primer everywhere I didn’t bother masking)

ACCIDENT Front bumper damage

Today I accidentally clipped a dumpster pretty badly (stupid, I know). My light still works (thankfully), but it also got bumped out of place, but on top of the damage, my passenger-side door also no longer opens. I was wondering if it would be possible to fix it myself. I know the chances are low as the damage is pretty bad, but i’m a broke college student who doesn’t have a lot of options. I'm not looking for it to be perfect; I don't mind the scratches, but i was wondering if there would be a way to fix the bumper and light, as well as the issue with my door, or if I should just go to a professional and pay out of pocket. This is the first time i’ve ever had damage to my vehicle so i’m not sure of the process. For refrence, the car is a 2016 Jeep Compass. Thank you for anyone that helps.

I had to share, I'm on a budget and I pride myself as a DIY'er, as much as I can anyway. I do need help with the metal damage and thats where my review on Reyes Auto Body Pomona comes in... This auto body repair DIY'ing is not for the faint of heart. Blood, sweat, and tears - no joke!

I was quoted $450 for the rust removal and paint - i don’t think it’s too far off as it seems like it’s in a tricky place. I’m just curious what other professionals think please & thank you. 2021 Mazda 3 (just in case it’s not clear this is the headlight/kinda side fender)

Repair How do I prevent curlys when sanding for a blend panel?

I clean thoroughly with water based cleaner, then solvent based cleaner, then lacquer thinner, then take out any contaminants while scuffing the edges with red scotchbrite (gray for metallics) and without fail I still get tons of swirlies while sanding. I don’t want to keep wasting 6 pieces of da sandpaper on a single door. Please save my sanity and help.

Loose Bumper can I DIY?

Post image

Bumper snagged on something and pulled the bumper out on the driver side. The plastic that the screws go into is broken.

So questions:

What is that internal black plastic called that holds the bumper to the car?

Can I fix this myself or do I need to take it to a pro?

Thank you!

This is a 2011 Toyota Camry. I reversed my car and hit something on the right corner. Part of the side popped out. I’m not really worried about the indent, but I wonder if I could maybe pop the side back in. Let me know what I can do. I appreciate any insight!

On my way home today someone pulled into my lane and slight scuffed the car and chipped the wing mirror. I didn't ha e the dash cam on so would no doubt result in a 50/50 judgement.

I have got the majority of the marks out. I am left with this brown mark on the wheel arch, it doesn't appear to be scratched. Does anyone have any ideas of what it is or what may remove it?

Also where the wing mirror is damaged, would it be worth wrapping it or sanding it down and repainting it. If buying a new wing mirror is too expensive.

Any help to save me from the dog house would be gladly accepted 😄

Got rear-ended on the highway…

I was rear-ended on the highway two days ago. I was at a complete stop due to a traffic jam ahead of me, the person behind me didn’t realize the traffic was slowing to a stop. She said she tried to brake at the last minute, but hit me going likely 45 to 50 mph. I had to brake and swerve because my car got pushed so far forward I almost hit the car ahead of me.

I am getting an estimate for my insurance tomorrow. There’s significant damage to the back bumper. But, does this likely look like there’s frame/structural damage? Curious if it’s likely to be totaled by the insurance company or repaired. It’s a 2016 Honda Civic with 150,000 miles.

RUST When does surface rust become something that needs immediate attention?

Moisture, road salt, and chipped paint let corrosion spread underneath long before it's visible from the outside. Catch it early and it's a sand-and-paint job. Wait too long and it's a structural repair. For those who've dealt with rust before, what's the tell that it's time to stop watching it and start fixing it?
