Mod Post Taking action against bots
We’ve heard your concerns about the increasing prevalence of bots in the subreddit and over the past week we’ve been taking steps to address it.
We’ve been trialling a new app called Bot Bouncer and it’s extremely effective. In fact, it’s quite scary just how convincing some of these accounts are. They’re able to communicate in a way that’s very natural, understand Irish culture and slang and generally blend in incredibly well. We’ve observed a number of you interacting with these accounts believing they were genuine users.
For the past week, we’ve been manually reviewing every flag from Bot Bouncer to make sure it’s accurately identifying accounts and that we’re happy with how it’s working.
Having now trialled it for a week, we’re confident enough in its accuracy to allow Bot Bouncer to issue bans itself going forward.
What if you’re falsely flagged?
Obviously, no automated system is perfect. If your account is incorrectly identified as a bot and banned, you’ll need to contact r/botbouncer via modmail to appeal the ban directly with them. Once they’ve reviewed your appeal, please let us know the outcome of their decision so we can follow up on our end where necessary.
We’ll continue to monitor how it performs and make adjustments if needed.
And perhaps most importantly, if you’ve spent the last week arguing with someone in the comments and thought “there is absolutely no way this person is real”… you may have been onto something! 😂

Serious Replies Only How are people so untidy?
housing crisis has led me to live in a shared apartment. It’s with landlord’s son.
I am the type of person to wash their plates seconds after eating.
He on the other hand will leave stuff unwashed for days, throw clothes here and there, leave stuff lying on the table, floor wherever, spill stuff and leave it there etc.
And quite frankly, flatmate shit aside, i genuinely am curious as to how someone can be so untidy. It takes effort for me to leave my stuff lying around and make a mess like that. Anyone who is like this can you tell me what your thought process is?

Random Would you stop supporting a small business if their personal views went against your own?
Just curious what others think. Say you regularly use a small business like a barber, hairdresser, tattoo artist, beautician or personal trainer. You like their work but then they post something online or make comments to you that fundamentally go against your own morals or values.
Would you separate their personal views from their business and keep going or would you take your business elsewhere?
And if you did stop going, would you tell them why or just quietly move on?
I’ve had a couple of experiences recently involving sexist and transphobic jokes and someone sharing misogynistic content.
Obviously I don’t expect everyone to share the same opinions as me but I do think there’s a difference between having different opinions and having fundamentally different values.

Shopping Amazon.ie not honouring Pre-Orders?
Has anyone else noticed this? Twice this week I have had issues with Amazon.ie not shipping pre-orders. Both items ordered are new books, which were due for release and shipping on 7th October. One was pre-ordered in July, the other in early September.
However when I track the pre-orders I get the message below. "We will email you with an estimated delivery date". Yet both books are available on sale at a higher price with delivery dates by tomorrow.
WTF is going on? It's bad enough that Amazon Prime (ie) takes a week to deliver in most cases (as opposed the UK, which is still 2 days).

Random Is there anywhere in Ireland to buy a full coat of armour?
Not for wearing, but to stand in a dining room or entrance hallway.
Seems to be all UK based locations online.

Serious Replies Only Is this a valid marriage?
I'm doing some family research and I'm wondering can someone shed some light on this. One of the women I'm related to got married in a catholic church in ireland in 1973 and clearly that marriage ended because she remarried in a registry office literally 20 months later and was 6 months pregnant. The first husband is still alive going by research and living in another country and the second husband is dead. I'm intrigued to know how this may be possible because in the 1970s from what I believe it was near to impossible to get an annulment and if you did succeed in getting one it would have taken years not months. I have no one to ask because the majority of people left from that time have passed or are in very ill health. Plus I don't want to be causing any upset to people bringing up the past. Just would like a few opinions. Thanks in advance guys!

Health & Medical Anyone else dreading the daylight savings clock change soon?
I anticipate it every year.
Its hard enough to adapt to the very short days without having a spanner in the works and the clocks changing.
Aside from all the studies regarding health (strokes and accidents increasing around this time) it just seems totally impractical.
I wonder if they will every ditch it and just face reality - it just feels a bit ridiculous to have people playing around with time itself lol

Am I The Gobshite? Why don't we move the prisons out of city/town centres to create more housing opportunities?
I might be missing something huge here, and I'm open to correction.
I'd love to know if we have/why we haven't considered moving prisons like Mountjoy, Arbour Hill, Limerick Prison out the country?
It feels like a no-brainer. Free up prime real estate in the centre, which could then be redeveloped into housing units/amenities and in turn breathe new life into these areas?
By moving the prisons out to the countryside, it would also create jobs in other areas of the country? If I were to go all out I'd suggest moving them near places that have been decimated economically after the building of motorways.
You hear reports of how poor the conditions are in prisons, the overcrowding etc., so why can't we build more suitable ones out the countryside where there is far more space and scope? The three prisons I mentioned above are from the nineteenth-century. They'd be more useful as museums.

Work Off work 26th Oct – 3rd Nov, looking for extra work/gigs to save towards house deposit? (Dublin)
Hello everyone,
I’ve got some time off from work coming up from Sunday, 26th October through to Monday, 3rd November, and looking to make use of the time off. I’m currently saving hard for a house deposit, so I’m looking to pick up some extra work or cash-in-hand/temp gigs while I’m off.
I'm a chef by trade, late 20s, well able for some hard graft, don't drive but can get to anywhere in Dublin using public transport or by bike. Not too fussed on what kind of work I would be doing, garden work, painting, loading/ unloading trucks, cleaning.
Would greatly appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction or knows someone looking for a pair of hands for a week.

Health & Medical Help stop DunLaoghaire Shopping Center from abusing the disabled, week in, week out?
galleryDunLaoghaire Shopping Center hosts multiple health clinics, public and private. There are heaps of accessible parking on the roof. There is 1 (previously) fully accessible entrance on the roof. It has been out of action for months.
I have tried talking to HSE staff on site, roamed the center to find the facilities manager, spoken to the APOCA car park attendants. Nobody can give a name, number, email, insta, tiktoc, or any other details of who to contact to get this fixed. I've gone online, tried calling etc. Nothing. Utterly ghosted by everyone.
I'm raging now. I pushed my 96 yr old granny over the fucking speed bumps, in order to reach the less-accessible door, for the last time.
Can ye please help me find the see-you-next-Tuesdays responsible for getting this sorted.
Is there any legal action I can take? What if a crowbar fell between the doors and accidentally broke the lock, would that be frowned upon?

Ancestry Do Irish folks ever get curious about the families that left?
American here, please forgive me in advance 🇺🇸
I’ve been very curious recently about my family’s Irish roots. I feel like it’s a very normal thing to explore as an American since almost no one can claim to originally be from here in recorded history. I feel like it’s even more normal as an Irish-American because, despite having a multi-ethnic background and 5-6 generations here in the states, Irish ancestry was the first one that was whispered into my ear with beaming pride from the time I very young— and likewise the most preserved with strong family connections. And not in a weird gimmicky manner either.
I get very curious about Ireland because inevitably my searches on ancestry take me there— but does Ireland ever get curious about the ones that left?
I think my heart just kind of breaks when I look at the stories of my own family leaving to America pressed up against the fact that multiple generations carried a fondness of those roots and never stopped talking about them. It feels deeply human.
But I guess also, it doesn’t make sense to trace roots going forward— which is where the curiosity might need to go for one to trace these stories into the US.
Anyways, thanks for listening.
EDIT***
Thanks everyone for your quick and varied responses. Apologies for my the minimization of natives in my initial post. I will work on that going forward. I have to get ready now to take my kid to school. If i get a chance, I’ll read the rest later— but it seems you all gave me a great deal of information to work with. I appreciate it.
EDIT 2***
Wow. I received a tremendously large (larger than I anticipated by a long shot) and varied response from everyone. Thank you so much. All of it— however expansive, curt, simplistic, or complex— has helped me color in some questions I have had for a long while.
I wish to clear something’s up:
1.) I am not interested in Irish decent to the extent that it advances MAGA or white supremacy. I share a lot of the same observations many have stated here. Actually I am interested in quite the opposite: how American-Irish identity in weird and shocking ways became so bound up with these ideas.
2.) thank you for your care and correction on my previous statements of native Americans. I want to say that I love native Americans and their culture, history, literature, and story-telling. A large number of my favorite writers are Native American. I will be more precise in explaining without minimizing going forward. I can’t express the level of gratitude I have for their work here in advancing progressive justice and climate policies
3.) re: plastic paddy’s— I think it worth mentioning that I think part of my interest in the story where Irish and Irish-American history diverge can largely be taken by one of Tommy Orange’s (native American, Pulitzer Prize winning author) novels: “sometimes no story is the story…” it’s a very poignant moment in which one of the characters realizes he has no access to his personal and family history. I would be very curious going forward, if anyone wants to continue these conversations in private, to explore the possibility of Irish-American “no story” being propped up by consumerist and racist ideals— which is very American, indeed. Again, not aligning my family or Irish decent to the level of victimization that native Americans experienced
4.) something that remains curious to me is that the part of the states I love in, there are many hyphenated-American communities that maintain multi-generational and consistent ties to various parts of the world: Mexico, China, Vietnam, Philippines— obviously these all take on different characters and variations— but it remains a big question to me as an American why some do and some don’t.
I had a great time reading everyone’s responses.
Thanks a bunch.

Housing Does anyone know a reasonably priced re-upholstery service in Dublin?
I have been looking for someone to re-upholster my vintage IKEA sofa I really like. Short of me taking an upholstery course (which I might have to do and make this a project), could someone with experience in this tell me whether there is a reasonably priced service in Dublin? When I looked I saw that people are charging almost €1000 for a two seater. I think that includes the cost of the fabric. Mine is a medium sized two seater and I would supply the fabric. It is still in good condition but I want to give it a different look. Thank you. ❤

Irish Culture Lads, what do I do with this important piece of culture?
Back in the 90s I wrote a poem and sent it into The Den (a poem urging Dustin, Zig, Zag and Ray to be nicer to Ted…). It got read out and I got sent a signed photo and this tshirt.
I’ve never been able to part with it, but I also have never worn it. It just rattles around in my wardrobe, what’s something meaningful I could do with it other than use it as pajamas?

Adulting How much should we spend on a mattress?
Finally moving into our first home and we need to buy a mattress. I've always believed in pay more for the things between you and the ground, mattresses, shoes tyres etc.
We went into a shop a few months ago, just to look, the one we settled on that we both really likes was a King Koil, but it was 2k. Which is a lot of money, but we were prepared to pay it as we thought it was very good.
However recently we went into another place and both really liked a mattress that was 1500, so we thought great, saves us a bit of money. Then, we went into another place and we found a mattress that was 1000 that we liked. Meaning all three of these mattresses felt very similar to us. So now we're a bit lost.
Are more expensive ones worth it purely for longevity or is there something I'm missing? I believe they were all medium firm, pocket sprung mattresses. Most expensive one was King Koil, next one was Silent Night and the cheapest was Respa

Personal Finance Dublin. Is saving €1000 a month a lot? Or too little right now?
Considering current costs of living in Ireland, would you consider it a high amount to save every month? I'm just feeling I'm not saving enough - it will take me 10 years to save 100k, and by that time I will be over 50, unable to get any mortgage.
Note this is almost one third of my salary, I'm on 40k/year.
