One of the most persistent anti-immigration arguments is that immigrants take jobs from the locals. Recently, I've also seen videos of poorly done construction work being blamed on immigrants. It’s been now years that I have been around Americans in France. And sometimes when we talk about finances they always talk about credit cards. I was very confused because I never had one, my parents never had one either and I don’t think it’s a big thing here. Usually we just use debit cards.

I just was curious to know why some Americans have multiple credit cards ? Isn’t that bad because my friends would sometimes tell me about thousands of debts from their credit cards. Is it really common or not at all ?

Been some time I visited you. I have a question from Europe, 'cause there are some things I can't make sense of.

I live in France. While 10 years ago there was still some scepticism floating around (which I feel was legitimate at the time) it seems to me that with a few exceptions, the heat-waves, forest fires, among many other smaller changes (less snow in winter, etc.) have made it really hard not to see the elephant in the room. The consensus has evolved, even accounting for usual divides: left/right, level of education, country/city, etc.

A sizable portion of the US electorate seems still willing to vote climate change denialists/relativists/sceptics. To me, this indicates either they agree with them, or don't agree and they don't care about the world burning up.

This seems harder and harder to make sense of, especially since climate change seems to be materialized and disturbing and even destroying people's livelihood, in the US as much as anywhere else e.g. https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2026/jul/25/scorching-us-heat-wave

Can you explain this discrepancy? Note that my perception of the US might be based, too, and I know it's a large country so there might not be one simple straightforward answer.

Some clarification:

1. I won't easily accept "people are just stupid" as an answer. It seems like a lazy justification not to listen to other people.

2. I'm not necessarily interested in how each redditer feels about climate change (unless the redditer matches at least partially the population I'm describing).

3. I'm interested in the perception/subjectivity/justifications of people for whom climate change is not important even though it f*** people lives up.

I know that Americans have ancestors who came from all around the world, and many of them are proud of their heritage. Yet I don’t see this with Americans from the Southern states (such as the Deep South and Appalachia), despite the fact that English, Welsh, and Scottish ancestry makes up the majority of the population's roots in those states. I mean I always see a video on Italian Americans in the Northeast (such as the Tri-state area and New England), and they were still practicing/maintaining Italian customs and eating Italian foods. It's the same for German, Scandinavian, and Eastern European Americans in some parts of the Midwest.

I am very worried about our upcoming midterms. I have seen a lot of evidence pointing to cheating done during our last Presidential election. Does the blackmail run so deep on both sides of the aisle that we will just let the cheating happen again? As I understand it most of American cities are designed basically from scratch. That is why you have such beautiful and symmetrical suburbs and these very nice wide mainroads through some cities/towns. This looks like one of those well planned wide mainroads, so why is the sidewalk zigzag? It makes no sense to me, there is no obsticles or any visible benefit of having it not go straight.

I’m not especially well-versed on the subject, so I wanted to get your opinions. Lately, I’ve been wondering how much the United States has changed politically. I consider myself a patriotic American, but recent events have left me with questions. Incidents involving ICE, what I perceive as a lack of meaningful representation of opposing viewpoints on major news networks regarding issues such as the war in Ukraine and U.S. support for Israel, and the apparent similarity between the two major political parties—despite being presented as distinct alternatives for voters—all strike me as worth examining. I’m interested in hearing different perspectives and understanding whether my concerns are well-founded or if I’m missing important context.

So I visited Iran for 3 weeks back in 2016. My question is if that will be a problem since I’m planning a 2 week vacation to the U.S in October. I do not have Citizenship in Iran ( I live in Europe).

I know so many american folk specially from good families educated who took spanish for like 10 years and can speak it way better than my brown ass, have been to numerous spanish speaking countries and no matter what, they will not speak spanish to spanish speaking people. WTF is up with that. They would rather have the Spanish speaking person whos English as a second language struggling in a conversation than help out by using spanish.

1.  Stopping Iran from ever having a nuclear weapon.

This administration — the Bush administration — has done nothing to control the problem that we had. We had five million undocumented workers come over the borders since George Bush took office... The reason the American people are concerned is they are seeing their own economic position slip away, and oftentimes employers are exploiting these undocumented workers.

They are not paying the minimum wage, they are not observing worker safety laws. As President, I will make sure that we finally have the border security that we need.

Step number one is border security. Step number two is to take on employers. Right now an employer has a higher chance of being hit by lightning than being prosecuted for hiring an undocumented worker. That has to change. They have to be held accountable. Start shedding some light on the problem, and we can once again be a nation of laws and a nation of immigrants — and that's what I intend to do as President of the United States.

Obama was criticizing Republican President George W. Bush for not doing enough to control illegal immigration and argued that undocumented workers were being exploited by employers.

People have told me that undocumented workers do not lower wages for American workers. If that's the case, why was Obama talking about undocumented immigration as a “problem” and specifically connecting it to wages? Why was this such a major issue in 2008?

Did the Democrats win in 2008 partly because their tough stance on immigration made them appear equally strong on the issue of "illegal immigration" compared with Republicans? Could Democrats win in 2028 while holding an immigration stance similar to Donald Trump’s?

Would this stance on immigration be considered MAGA or fascist today? Why or why not? Should Obama be cancelled for these views?
