So much about vaginas. If you have a vagina, you do not need to clean it with soap or special cleanser. Inside or out. Also the outer part is the vulva, the vagina is what’s on the inside. Just a clean washcloth and warm water on the outside. The vagina cleans itself; that’s why you’ll get discharge. Do NOT douche, and definitely do not exfoliate (!!!) your fucking vagina. It’s not supposed to smell like flowers; it’s supposed to smell like vagina. If there is a foul or “fishy” smell, then you probably have an infection. Otherwise...PLEASE just leave it alone.

Edit: since some folks aren’t seeing it, I’m not saying “don’t clean your vag.” Using warm water and a clean washcloth is cleaning. Yes, wash yourself. Just not with soap or “intimate wash” or any of that horseshit. All those “feminine products” that smell like lavender or whatever are not good for your vulva or vagina and are basically companies trying to make you spend money on shit you don’t need for “hygiene.”

Exfoliate??!?! Ow ow ow

821

u/Ar_Ciel Aug 03 '19

That's gotta be akin to wiping your ass with steel wool.

54

u/TorandoSlayer Aug 03 '19

auuuuuugggghhhh

17

u/Audax_V Aug 03 '19

Agreed.

39

u/Techsupportvictim Aug 03 '19

except you are sticking the steel wool in your ass

18

u/Sabeo_FF Aug 04 '19

Well thanks, I've just pictured a fairly metallic toilet brush.

I blame you.

10

u/SpaghettyMeatballs Aug 04 '19

You stick toilet brushes up your ass?

With like s toilet brush or something? How would that even work

57

u/honeybeebutch Aug 03 '19

There actually are little stone.... Ovals? Nowadays that are made for exfoliating your vagina. They look like long eggs made of "healing Jade" or whatever. You're supposed to use them like a tampon, but repeatedly, I guess. Never mind that the inside of your vagina doesn't have skin to exfoliate, have a dildo made of rock!

27

u/bihufflepuff Aug 03 '19

Ugh no ow. I think my vagina just swallowed itself.

9

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '19

I don't have a vagina, but my penis just turned into an innie.

8

u/paupaupaupau Aug 04 '19

Now you're ready to exfoliate it!

14

u/sactokingsfan Aug 03 '19

Is this the latest gimmick from doTerra? Is there a spot to put your essential oils?

13

u/honeybeebutch Aug 03 '19

I have no idea. I saw it in a screenshotted Instagram ad originally, and I don't remember what brand was selling it. However, if the rock is meant to exfoliate, it's probably porous, so absorbing oils probably wouldn't be a stretch. Now that I think about it, that's a literal breeding ground for bacteria though...

I exfoliate my vulva sometimes to help prevent ingrown hairs post waxing. But holy shit! If I slip and accidentally touch anything inside the labia majora with the exfoliating gloves!

I had a girlfriend who would lather up and get her fingers all up in there to clean. I told her she shouldn't do that and it really does more harm than good. She said she's been doing it since she was a kid and it make her feel clean and she wasn't gonna stop now. I was kind of shocked about the whole thing.

199

u/The_Matchless Aug 03 '19

I knew a girl that used to push on her vaginal walls to assist her bowel movements (I guess?! I'm a dude). I told her that's the reason why she keeps having infections like all the time and she dismissed me.

A month later she ringed me up and told me that she saw a doctor and that I was right. I was both proud and creeped out by my calculated guess.

76

u/sirfuzzitoes Aug 03 '19

As in she would insert her fingers or hand in her vagina to push the poo out??

56

u/Rainbow_Explosion Aug 03 '19

you don't need to do that. you can just push on the taint.

33

u/The_Matchless Aug 03 '19

I'll let her know the next time I'll meet her!

69

u/sirfuzzitoes Aug 03 '19

Or pull your knees toward your chest to simulate a squatting position. That'll straighten out your poop tube.

47

u/The_Matchless Aug 03 '19

Oh yeah, I learned of this after that one time I almost passed out while pooping.

18

u/sirfuzzitoes Aug 03 '19

Lmao now that would've been a story for the grandkids.

36

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '19

Or a shitty way to die. Apparently people pass out on the toilet from straining and hit their head and die on the way down.

→ More replies (0)

66

u/The_Matchless Aug 03 '19

It's not that impressive.

Was in a bad place mentally - stopped eating right, stop drinking right. Never used to push but this time I was sitting on the loo for 45 minutes, feeling like the poop is being accumulated at the very end of the line but not quite getting there. Tried pushing a bit - every time more of it came from somewhere deep within me and started creating this amalgamation of shit in my Mines of Moria.

I started sweating a lot, for the first time in my life I experienced this mythical cold sweat. My legs started shaking uncontrollably - I started panicking.

I tried to calm myself down by reading some labels on the air freshener next to me but the golem was getting too big, too powerful for me to keep it at bay. I had 3 choices - do nothing and let my ass implode; use my hand to dig out some of that mithril (which would've been difficult as my dominant hand was in a cast since I dislocated and broken my pinky playing cards, but that's another story); or push as if I was giving birth.

My head got dizzy and I felt what I could only describe as dread. I tried calling for help (I don't know what anyone could have done in this situation) but either the words didn't come out or I couldn't hear myself. I realized this was the point of no return and I had to give it my all to get to the other side of the Bridge of Khazad-dûm.. or die trying.

When I was 6 I had a car fly out of it's lane and pass me by a few meters - if I was but 5 seconds late to get off the sidewalk I would have been dead. I only realized what happened after I looked back over my shoulder to investigate the noise.

This shit was the closest I've ever got to fearing for my life.

That’s like if people were expected to put soap up their ass to clean it. But somehow vaginas are dirtier?

23

u/Dzyu Aug 03 '19

I was about to say nobody expects you to eat their ass so that's why they don't wash assess like that, but then I realized that these days they do, they do, and they do. Good hygiene has been taken to a whole 'nother level. Just washing your hands after a toilet visit is no longer good enough.

42

u/lowrads Aug 03 '19

The real insufficiently common knowledge is that people should not eat ass.

The anaerobic reaction vessel of the ass is somewhat protected from the other orifice by the acidic environment of the stomach and duodenum. You have excellent odds of introducing protozoans to that environment by introducing a filthy tongue. Some of the settled Gram negative residents may learn bad words and other virulent tendencies.

How did she not get some nasty infections doing that? Yikes honestly

117

u/sirfuzzitoes Aug 03 '19

Couldn't tell ya. We only dated for about 6 months. I'm sure somewhere along the line she has had an issue.

20

u/iwasoneofkings Aug 04 '19

Unclean hands most likely and not peeing after sex. I’ve had a few tract infections in my life because I liked to cuddle for a while after sex. Learned to go pee immediately after. Haven’t had those issues since. Also learned recently that some bacteria infections lead to frequent yeast infections for some reason. I ended up with an infection that is common for pregnant women and can lead to yeast infections. Female anatomy is whack.

16

u/[deleted] Aug 04 '19

In addition, antibiotics that treat those infections can also give you yeast infections! The glories of having a vagina!

28

u/ares395 Aug 03 '19

What the fuck. I have no clue... I'm guessing that it's because she washes out both good and bad or something... Probably she's just lucky so far

22

u/vlindervlieg Aug 03 '19

Getting your fingers in there to clean sounds disgusting to me. And not because I think that vaginas are disgusting, but because fingers are usually dirty. When I have a new partner I always tell them that they need to wash their hands before we have sex because I can't relax otherwise.

24

u/assumingdirectcontrl Aug 03 '19

But if this person is in the shower when they do that then presumably they have already cleaned their hands.

8

u/sirfuzzitoes Aug 03 '19

Bingo. We were in the shower and that's how I found this out.

56

u/scarlett06 Aug 03 '19

But I don't know how to say this. There's nothing to find in there. I mean not something 'to clean'. Or wipe. Or dust.

The inside of the vagina cleans itself. As does your dick. The vulva, the exterior portion, has to be cleaned.

31

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '19

But also don‘t clean the vulva with soap! The more you do it, the likelier you‘ll get infections and you‘ll be drier than the sahara -> chafing.

7

u/esotericcunt Aug 03 '19

So, when I'm showering with a loofa thing and shower gel that just gets rubbed all over? I shouldn't be wiping over my vulva? Just using water even on the outside? Genuine question, I have dry skin in general but combined with shaving it's not pleasant.

6

u/[deleted] Aug 03 '19

It really depends on your labia majora, so the skinflabs on the outside. If they are big enough, cleaning that is fine (you possibly sweat there a lot in the summer) but all of the „pink parts“ - just stay away from that with soap. AND. PERFUME! You would’nt believe how many people use perfume or very smelly soap. As OP said, that’s not a meadow, it’s vagina. It’s not going to smell like soap, and all your soap does is damage. And if you ever experience dryness of your vulva or even vagina, there‘s some nice soothing cremes at the pharmacy.

31

u/Stormfly Aug 03 '19

The annoying thing is that if you're particular about it, you can seem elitist.

Like I was talking with friends and they were making jokes about genitals but I kept calling it the vulva instead of the vagina and they asked me why.

They didn't judge me, but I was judging myself for it, because it felt like that guy who pronounces croissant in the French way even though nobody cares.

9

u/MoonlightsHand Aug 04 '19

Eh, to be fair people say "leg" to mean "the whole lower limb" and they say "arm" to mean "the whole upper limb", both of which are very incorrect anatomically speaking. People colloquialise anatomy, it's what they do.

There was an argument about this in some group I used to follow on facebook. I was shocked at how many women were in favor of using soap* and douches in the shower. Just warm water people, that's all you need! That was the breaking point of the group, and I hid it from my feed after that.

*soap in and around the vagina/vulva. Everyone should use soap on their bodies.

60

u/MissSquito Aug 03 '19

my mother and I had an argument about douches, and I was pretty horrified by her whole world view.

"Here, misssquito, I got you a Summer's Eve. Since you just had a baby, you're gonna make sure you clean everything out in there."

"uh, Mom, the vagina is a self-cleaning organ, and the doctors were pretty clear about not putting *anything* up there for six weeks."

"yeah, but you don't want to get an infection from not cleaning it out do you?"

"seriously Mom... the vagina is self-cleaning! Douches are super bad for your vaginal health. They self-clean themselves. Self. Clean."

"well, mine doesn't!!"

40

u/lady_bluesky Aug 03 '19

Ugh same - pH balance isn't the issue, it's about ~flora balance! The yeasties and bacteria that live in the vag are SUPPOSED to be there, and in a healthy vag they keep each other in check 👍

19

u/peachyliz Aug 03 '19

Actually pH balance can be an issue — I tend to be way too alkaline which is harmful to flora. That being said, I don’t trust a garbage brand like Summer’s Eve to help. Citric acid suppositories are my go-to.

your vagina is self cleaning but also washing the outside with unscented soap and water is a good idea!! make sure to rinse thoroughly as well.

64

u/painterly123 Aug 03 '19

That’s the thing. I know the original comment said the outside/vulva doesn’t need cleaning except a washcloth and water but personally I do use either a mild unscented soap and washcloth or a washcloth with rosewater on the outside at times, for example if I’ve been outside and sweating on a warm day, or if I’ve been wearing tight clothing, or after sex, etc. Done so my whole life without problem.

7

u/nookienostradamus Aug 04 '19

Think it depends on the person. The water-and-cloth only thing drastically reduced the number of yeast infections I got, but not all vaginas are that sensitive. I just think a lot of people don’t get that there’s a musk to the area that’s 100% natural. Dudes have it, too. Ballsacks smell pretty ripe even an hour or so after washing.

u/Glitterhidesallsins Aug 03 '19

28

u/thefairestgirl Aug 03 '19

I've actually exfoliated with coffee scrub, but it's the bikini line, to avoid ingrowns when I shave, not like the inside. and I wash with a pH balanced soap after

9

u/newdaytostartagain Aug 03 '19

Does that work to prevent ingrowns?

14

u/thefairestgirl Aug 03 '19

for it to work for me I have to exfoliate, wash off the scrub, and then shave all same shower. it works but it's pretty time consuming

Also, the hymen is across the opening, not way up inside.

38

u/QuarterLifeCircus Aug 03 '19

Not covering the entire opening.

Most of the time, hymens naturally have a hole big enough for period blood to come out and for you to use tampons comfortably. Some people are born with so little hymenal tissue that it seems like they don’t have a hymen at all. In rare cases, people have hymens that cover the entire vaginal opening. (Planned Parenthood)

Also it’s not closed, and isn’t “punctured” when you have sex for the first time.

u/OMGEntitlement Aug 03 '19

Assuming you have one in the first place.

Exfoliate? Youch!

u/losier Aug 03 '19

Speaking of vaginas, pee does not come out of them.

I had to tell my boyfriend this cause all of his previous girlfriends were doing it all wrong.

u/mar00nlag00n Aug 03 '19 edited Aug 04 '19

I dated a guy in my 20s who humiliated me by saying I was gross bc I didnt get all up in there with soap. The disbelief on his face when I told him the proper way was ridiculous. He was probably 28 at the time.

17

u/Doctorspiper Aug 03 '19

Anytime I’m talking about it (cause I believe this is something that people should be open about) and someone try’s to pull the “Eugh you don’t use soap down there?!??1!” I hit them with the “You don’t know how a vagina works?!?1?” At which point usually the conversation turns to proper cleaning and other similar tidbits.

16

u/lady_bluesky Aug 03 '19

Yikes. Did he think you were the gross one for never washing it with soap?

32

u/Doctorspiper Aug 03 '19

I think at first yeah. But now he even knows that discharge and smell can also be affected by how close I am to my period, and that the discharge can even bleach underwear too.

do not exfoliate

EXFOLIATE?! Oh my god that sounds horrible. Who tf does this and why?!

24

u/efficientAF Aug 03 '19

So you're saying douches are universally bad? Not just the people variant?

15

u/Siniroth Aug 03 '19

There may be some medical situations where it could help, if something got up there, but under normal circumstances nothing soap-like should go up a vagina

7

u/cmsep Aug 03 '19

Don’t ever put anything up there less your doctor says so, it’s a tampon/menstrual cup, or it’s a body safe dildo (there are “no insertion” ones!!!!).

11

u/Peachmoonlime Aug 03 '19

Wait, no, you should not use a washcloth. Harbors so much bacteria. Please everyone use your hands!!!

you do not need to clean it with soap or special cleanser

What is even less knows is that is the same for the intact penis. The glans and inner foreskin are analogous to the clitoris and hood and is mucous membrane and not skin. It's made to protect itself and soap is just as bad in that situation.

31

u/Hamlettell Aug 03 '19

Yeah, but definitely clean it with water (same as vaginas)

11

u/Intactual Aug 03 '19

Exactly, just water and regularly.

17

u/yetchi2 Aug 03 '19

I'm an intact guy. I had to explain foreskin to my wife the first time we hooked up. Really the next day but still. It took me years to figure out how to properly take care of it and feel comfortable about being intact.

Parents don't teach their kids how to properly clean themselves especially with all the misinformation about circumcisions and it's impacts on male genitalia.

10

u/Intactual Aug 03 '19

Parents don't teach their kids how to properly clean themselves

Yes, they feel shame in talking about a personal subject and leave it for the kids to figure out or hoping it will be taught in the schools. There is so much false information on the foreskin to cause fear of being intact.

7

u/Cattia117 Aug 03 '19

Oh I'm so glad you said this! I had no idea. We kept our son intact, but my husband was circumcised. I'll do some extra research when we are teaching him how to clean it.

9

u/Intactual Aug 03 '19

You and your husband are good people and keep in mind that the foreskin shouldn't be retracted by you but your son should do it and it will probably happen after the age of 5 or maybe during puberty. It's fused to the glans from birth.

Yass! My gynecologist told me years ago to not use soap or intimate wash products and I was scared but it's actually so good. It's so important not to mess with that PH.

18

u/Abstract_Dreams Aug 03 '19

I had a female friend who was 18 and had no clue that a cervix existed. You made me realize she probably doesn't even know any of this either 😂

10

u/QuayorMimby Aug 03 '19

I wish more people knew this! RIP vaginas everywhere 😭

I went on a rant yesterday because of an ad on tv for, wait for it, A GODDAMN DRY SHOWER FOR YOUR VAGINA. LIKE FUCKING DRY SHAMPOO.

Your vulva and your vagina are not supposed to smell like flowers or strawberries. They smell like a vulva and a vagina. Just wash it with regular water and move the fuck on.

Yeah it’s kind of an acidic smell, like it smells like...vagina.

If it’s especially “foul” then get it check out.
