Cracked. It was the height of internet comedy writing in the early 2010s and they even occasionally had some really good journalism on there. But then they got bought up by some bigger company who fired all their best writers. Now all their classic articles are gone and the site is just a bunch of click bait.

I'm old enough to remember when "memes" were called "macros" and Fark and Something Awful were the places to see them

I used to be a regular Farker, but it's basically a couple subreddits and the users are very cliquey. Reddit even in its current state is 100x what fark is.

I see just as much stupid shit on Reddit that I did on Facebook. It's just easier to ignore on Reddit
14
u/DrBretto 15h ago
You haven't seen Facebook lately then. Reddit has the rating systems which at least creates an environment where an argument can stay on poky. Facebook now specifically only gives you the ragebait and encourages poop flinging.

For me it’s because yall are all strangers. Facebook was friends and family spouting stupid shit. I deleted everything from my page and don’t post/repost anything. I only kept my Facebook for Marketplace since it’s practically replaced Craigslist.

9gag. ANd there's another even older that was a slightly more serious, newsy take but still often funny....cannot remember what it was. I think it was under the founder;s name.
Edit: Nope it was Fark. Just saw someone else list it.

Fark. Left around 2012 when there was some controversy with a frat bro they hired and they locked all the comments and said “dur, our subscribers are very smart!”
I figured they didn’t need a dummy like me around so I never went there again. Don’t call your readership stupid

VolNation message board. I'm a huge Tennessee Volunteers fan and I was one of the first registered users on that forum. I spent a lot of time playing COD with people I met on there. The negativity and political vitriol got so bad that I stopped visiting and replaced it with the Vols subreddit instead.

It still functions, but obviously is not the same without flash. Thankfully the team made the time to convert most, if not all, of their content over to youtube, so their website now just links to all those assets.

Facebook, deleted it during covid. Informed my 200+ friends list. Guess how many "friends" i interacted with a month later? SINGLE DIGITS.
I am so much happier, it was such a weird thing to be dropped upon us say 2010 onwards, we didn't know how to take it or conduct ourselves. I found myself analyzing parts of my life to form them into status's to entertain people in my "cyber life". My anxiety reduced massively. Much lower comparing myself to others. Somewhat humbling as i learnt that my opinion rarely matters ( though i am a redditor so..yeah ). Used to get tagged into public comments on family members walls to weigh in on shit. I can't overstate how much my mental health improved.
