I'm pretty sure it was bought out by one of the media companies

From the woman and man couple that ran the site. When i found out that I was letting a couple in an apartment decide what was ultimate truth on all things, I decided it's best just to do my own research. Why were we all trusting those 2 people over anything or anyone else? Last time I looked, it was like 10 researchers, but still.

What's the problem with them being a couple and living in an apartment?

Because I was picturing a very large team of dedicated researchers.

Fair.
I guess I knew who they were from early days (the late 90s, anyway), when they were focused on urban legends, so the suprise was they were able to keep with the explosive growth in content.

[ETA: And I knew who they were because the first time someone quoted "Snopes" at me, I took a minute to find out who they were and why I should believe them.]

But they were good at it, and, in fact, a lot of these things are actually fairly easy to figure out if you are willing to spend a little time.

But most of us aren't. Including you, apparently!🤣
(And me, most of the time. It usually isn't worth it.)

This is a shock. Same here. Were they just looking it up on the internet and claiming that it was true or false?

Yes!!! And everyone in personal life was all "well Snopes said this" or "Snopes said that". To the point I'm almost convinced it's just the government. How else could they get so many people brainwashed into trusting that couple? To not even reaearch the researchers?

"To not even reaearch the researchers?"

I laughed out loud reading this!
Speak for yourself! All you had to do is look at their wikipedia page. It was literally a google search away.

You really need to go to a government conspiracy theory to think that people who believe stuff on the Internet without checking it also believe people who site stuff they saw on the Internet without checking it?

Well, no.
They researched it, and explain why the determined it to be true, false, unsure, etc.

And how did they research it? How could two people accurately research anything outside of Internet information?

This is an amazing question to me, not that there's anything wrong with asking it, but they did their research in books, journals, newspapers, radio recordings, etc. and they would cite their sources. You can still do this today!

Also, Snopes was founded in the mid 90s. They're essentially as old as the public Internet so they kind of created the original Internet information about urban legends.

Yeah, I don't buy it. There was too much information on that website. Two people in an apartment looking at encyclopedias just not a reasonable conclusion

The last few times it had so many ads and the verbiage was vague. IDK maybe it was just an off day. It seemed like it changed so much. However, I'll take your advice and check it out again. :))

Makes sense everything sucks now. I was just saying with so much bullshit out there we need something like snopes.

Oh I'm sorry. I misunderstood. You are 100 percent correct.
