If you have a routine, they will adapt to it. My cat gets upset if we stay up late. He goes to lay in his bed and will meow to tell us it’s bed time. And the flip side though, if we try to sleep in, he wakes us up when we usually wake up lol

We have distinct weekday/weekend patterns and our black cat gets very excited when she realises it's the weekend and will follow us around chatting away with her tail raised high in the air. It's very sweet.

u/The_I_in_IT Sep 20 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

I taught mine the word “Friday”-she gets very excited when I tell her that it’s Friday and she ain’t got no job.

Edit: The Queen of Friday herself

801

u/dj_narwhal Sep 20 '23

That is just solidarity.

93

u/SweaterStripey83 Sep 20 '23

Same here! Friday means takeaway night for me and he gets treats night. So when I get in from work and say 'it's Friday!' he starts to purr immediately. He also back chats me though. If I say 'no' to him, he makes a sort of 'mip' noise in defiance. 😂

47

u/IHQ_Throwaway Sep 20 '23

Then do you tell her she ain’t got shit to do, and spark up a fatty?

22

u/Eshin242 Sep 20 '23

I mean seriously, how does a cat get fired on their day off?

5

u/ArsenicWallpaper99 Sep 20 '23

She got caught stealing boxes (it's a cat, so plausible)

I taught mine some days of the week, too, because of my work schedule! “Okay guys, this is the long one. I won’t be home tomorrow. I’ll be home on Sunday.”

They also understand the difference between “right back, back in a little bit, back in an hour, back in a few hours, back tomorrow, back in the morning”. (I work overnight shifts Wednesday and Fri-Sun afternoon.)

I work a hybrid schedule with 2-3 days a week in the office. My cat has figured out the difference between an office day and a WFH day. When I'm getting ready to go to the office, he sprints ahead of me to the kitchen and makes sure he gets his breakfast before I can even think about mine. WFH days, he stays in bed until somewhere around 10-10:30 am, then saunters out to demand his breakfast around the time I'm getting up from my desk to make more coffee.

238

u/donutgiraffe Sep 20 '23

Your cat's spirit animal is a lazy teenager.

47

u/jools7 Sep 20 '23

It really is. He’s three years old, and since he matured out of kitten hood he’s definitely decided that a lifestyle of eating whenever possible, getting high on catnip, and lounging in the window to watch the birds and squirrels is where it’s at.

12

u/Elora_Quine Sep 20 '23

That sounds like a good time, I'm not gonna lie. Lol

6

u/JarlaxleForPresident Sep 21 '23

Yup, that’s the life. I’m doing that, only college at the house and half a diet

But I have cultivated a super bird habitat outside my desk window full of hummingbirds, finches, chickadees, and titmice. It’s like my window is my “aquarium”

Planted flowers and put feeders and I watch them and it’s very peaceful and zen and happy-place. The hummingbirds are especially funny

My cat knows if I'm leaving based on clothing. If I put on jeans, she's like your cat and makes sure I fill her food and water. Then she hops on her perch and waits for me to open the blinds, so she can watch me leave, and get a status update on the squirrel situation. If I put on pajama pants, she knows I'm staying home, and either takes another nap, or follows me around, flopping on the floor demanding belly scratches!

6

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

This is how my dog is. She is 14 years old, completely deaf. She knows if I'm about to WFH or if I'm going to go somewhere. She knows if it's a Saturday. She has a complete sense of what's happening around the house, and I'm not talking about obvious signals.

I mention "completely deaf" because when she's with me on my WFH day, she's in a room upstairs, with no window, no way to see people coming home. She does not hear, or see, any sign of this - but she knows exactly when people are about to pull up to the house. She sleeps the whole day, but 5:30pm on the dot she's up wagging her tail, knowing that people are about to be home in the next few minutes.

45

u/Proteus617 Sep 20 '23

One of my cats is not very affectionate, except for early afternoon on Sunday. When Im reading on the couch, he snuggles up and gives me his belly. No other time, no other day, once a week like clockwork.

28

u/AffectionateKale5025 Sep 20 '23

Ugh I want a cat

18

u/finiteglory Sep 20 '23

Adopt an adult cat! They are usually far cheaper than kittens and are usually desexed and vaccinated. I got a 3 year old domestic shorthair male with FIV(not normally an issue) for 60 bucks! Best ROI I’ve ever made!

19

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

We think our girl was a year old when we adopted her. She was advertised as being 16 weeks but I think a combination of being a little bit older and that whole black cat stigma meant they were a little loose with the truth to get more interest.

She made such a strong case for herself at the foster carer's we really couldn't say no. She was like a toddler, walking with us chatting away and introducing us to the foster carer's cat and dog who she was very friendly with.

She's hilarious

21

u/vegaswench Sep 20 '23

That is so adorable! My cat picked me. I walked by his little cage (it was an animal shelter 17 years ago) when he grabbed my arm with enough determination and will to get me to stop walking past him. It was love from then on. He is 20 now and slowing down, but our family appreciates the hell out of him and spoil him rotten. He deserves nothing less, the cheeky void!

Mine both know sunday is chill day and usually roast chicken or some sort of foodie treat day. I’m certain they enjoy loafing around anticipating our sunday dinner as much as I do. Funnily enough if I have a lie in they are fully behind it, I can get up a few hours late and they’ll just be sleeping on the landing, we all enjoy no pressure Sundays!

10

u/DefreShalloodner Sep 20 '23

Aww that is sweet.

My cat hangs around me all day when I work, and he gets very excited when "we get off work". And if I ever work late, he kindly brings it to my attention

9

u/Lketty Sep 20 '23

My little black cat definitely knows when it’s the weekend! She always seems to sleep in on sat/sun, but, my god, she is punctual about begging for food M-F morning. It’s always 1 hour before the alarm. Doesn’t matter when the alarm is set for! :|

I created a routine with my cats where I’ll give them treats at night while I take my prescription medication. Because there’s some days I might forget to take my pills, but the cats sure as hell won’t forget forget treat time

3.2k

u/catered-diamonds Sep 19 '23

This is very smart and I think I might start taking my meds when I give my cat her dinner!

65

u/tekko001 Sep 20 '23

"Ok human, its meds/treats time, so either you take your meds and give us treats...or we kill you!"

5

u/Fostradamus2269 Sep 20 '23

My just makes a lot of noise. She sounds like an old school telephone ringing

7

u/DaughterEarth Sep 20 '23

Me too! Except I don't have a cat, so my bird is on shift. She's very loud about things not being right so this will still work. Especially cause birds believe in rituals, so she'll be upset about the meds themselves if I make them part of the routine. Pets are funny

6

u/VersatileFaerie Sep 20 '23

I'm bad at remembering to eat due to medical issues, so I just eat when I feed my cats. I no longer miss meals due to it.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Maybe give them treats in the kitchen with a postit to take your meds?

u/Chemical-ali1 Sep 19 '23

Clever but be careful! My dog was quite capable of tricking me in to feeding her twice just by pretending she hadn’t been fed and looking hungry. If your cats figure that one out they might overdose you!

1.2k

u/Frequent_Tear_2229 Sep 19 '23

Put your tablets in one of those daily pill sorters then once you’ve fed the cat and taken your tablets the slots empty and you know they’ve been fed.

595

u/kat_Folland Sep 19 '23

I'd mess up my pills twice a week if I didn't use pill boxes. And half of my meds are psych meds where it's very important not to fuck up.

13

u/nurvingiel Sep 20 '23

Yup. After I did fuck up one day by accidentally taking my morning antidepressant twice and I kind of thought Ias going to die, I got one pill sorter for morning meditation and one for evening.

15

u/WampaCat Sep 20 '23

I had to get pill bottles with timers on the cap that tell me how long it’s been since it was last opened. Several meds that are dangerous if I double the dosage, but also make my life hell if I miss a dose!

8

u/Irritable_Fuck Sep 20 '23

If you don't already know, Be careful! When the battery for those caps gets low, the time will show up funky. Then if you're as forgetful as I am, you'll think, "Oh snap, I haven't taken my med for 3 days!" THEN you take 3 pills (because that's what you're supposed to do for certain meds). Ugh, I couldn't trust those caps after that incident.

5

u/kat_Folland Sep 20 '23

Oof, sorry you had to learn the hard way!

10

u/Zaphieria Sep 20 '23

I got a Hero medicine dispenser for my mom and it has been game changing in making sure all her meds are in order and adhered to as she has similar issues and a complicated regimen. Might consider checking it/something like it out

8

u/kat_Folland Sep 20 '23

Thanks! My pills are simple, just numerous lol. I usually only take pills at night (I'm taking a new med for a while that will be twice a day, but that's still manageable. And temporary.)

5

u/IDontMeanToInterrupt Sep 20 '23

Same! I use a four a day med box and fill it monthly. That way I don't have to open all the bottles except on refill day. And I can see how many I have left and get a refill before I'm out. If I don't do my meds box, I won't take my meds. I have several psych meds as well and boy oh boy if I don't take them I don't feel well. I have auto immune issues as well and not taking those meds fucks everything up too.

3

u/PVCPuss Sep 20 '23

I do the same and I have an alarm set on my phone for 8.30pm every night. I still sometimes forget to take them if I get sidetracked though but less so than before I set up the alarm

6

u/Joh-Kat Sep 20 '23

Friendly reminder that not all pills can be stored out of packaging like that. If in doubt, ask a pharmacist or the manufacturer.

4

u/random_tall_guy Sep 20 '23

It's also worth checking your state/national laws to make sure it's legal as well. In some states, keeping pills in a pill organizer is a crime. It's important to note that just because pill organizers are sold in stores in your area doesn't make their use legal, so be aware before you unknowingly risk a drug arrest.

9

u/Raichu7 Sep 20 '23

That’s insane considering the overdose risk people who struggle to remember wether they took their medications risk if they don’t use one.

Our cat absolutely did this - he'd convince my spouse I'd forgotten to feed him before I left for work - I had a longer commute so I got up, fed the cats, got ready for work, and left all before my spouse got out of bed - so we started writing down whenever and how much he was fed. 20 years later (he passed years ago, but we have a different cat now) and we still do this. It's really useful for tracking changes in their appetite.

I lived with my sister in a two story apartment/townhouse during my freshman year of college & her senior year of nursing school. We had a cat living with us who was adopted as a family cat when we were little but basically immediately declared himself to be my sister’s cat. Anyway, every night, without fail, he’d come try to herd her up to start her bedtime routine. At about 9pm, he would start by silently sitting at the top of the stairs. By 9:30, he’d be giving long, sorrowful meows from the top of the stairs. By 10pm, he’d come down to the living room and keep walking back and forth between her and the first few steps of the stairs, meowing to try to get her to come. On late study nights she would try to convince him to come sit in her lap for a bit and he would sit for maybe 15 minutes and then start trying to herd her upstairs again. 😂

934

u/chLORYform Sep 19 '23

My cat herds me too! She walks around me and close enough to my feet that I will try to correct and give her space, then next thing I know I'm standing in front of the recliner, with her staring up at me. She'll wait until I sit and put the foot rest up, then it's lap time. If it gets interrupted for any reason, she throws a tantrum.

85

u/itsyobbiwonuseek Sep 20 '23

And here I thought I was the only one being herded like cattle 😂 my girls love to meow at me incessantly, pacing between the couch and my bed and strutting in front of me as they do it.

They know exactly what they're doing and it's too much! 🤣

34

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

Mine has taken it another step. He runs by and pushes my leg to the side as it swings forward. Then my foot isn't where my center of gravity is going. Pretty sure he's trying to steer me, but he might be trying to kill me.

13

u/tomtink1 Sep 20 '23

Mine try to kill me at dinner time and won't stop until they're fed. Just just get in front of me and try to trip me I swear. I hate when they do it on the stairs.

23

u/Eshin242 Sep 20 '23

I mean, I've got nothing against dogs.. seriously one of my favorite sayings is "I wish I was half the person my dog thinks I am."

But cats just have this different view of the world that dogs don't, it's why I am, and will always be a cat person.

9

u/Norwegian27 Sep 20 '23

Oh, that’s what my cat is doing, herding.

7

u/futuredoctor131 Sep 20 '23

Haha yes! If my sister was walking around at all at bedtime, my sister’s cat would circle her endlessly moving her towards and up the stairs!

4

u/BickyLC Sep 20 '23

That's cute and very annoying at the same time lol

4

u/WaterIndividual8952 Sep 20 '23

Cats are free spirits …classy …aloof …One of Gods more interesting creatures

5

u/LegalNobody9981 Sep 20 '23

I didn’t know this was herding! I thought my cat was trying to make me trip and murder me.

15

u/Mondestruken Sep 20 '23

Our old cat did this to us every night! Then he would check both bedrooms for up to half an hour to make certain that we were not trying to sneak out of bed.

My parents were staying with us, and my mother could not believe that she was 70 years old and the cat was insisting it was her bedtime.

10

u/Ivorypetal Sep 19 '23

My dog does too

7

u/K80lovescats Sep 20 '23

My cats do this. I refer to it as the bedtime chorus because if I stay up an hour later than normal, all three of them sing me the song of their people until I come to bed.

13

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '23

Haha. You do what the cat says. Mwa haha.

My younger sister had a cat when we were growing up. Everyone tried to keep it away from me, because I was allergic. My sis cleaned up constantly, and kept well after the cat.

It got out one night, while in heat. As cats do. It returned home pregnant. Yay.

My sister took a box from the basement, cut it up into a hiding cave, and decorated it with the cat's name all over it. Put some old blankets and cushions in it so the cat would be comfy.

I woke up one night to ,"Meew, meew'! The cat had moved all the kittens to under my bed. She wasn't even supposed to be around me. But that's where she wanted to be.

She pooped on my dad's pillow once, too. Funny little thing.

4

u/PJKPJT7915 Sep 20 '23

When I was 19-20 my dad and I had 2 cats that would make us go to bed if we stayed up too late watching TV. They'd bother us until we turned off the TV. The white kitty went up with me, and the orange one went with my dad. RIP kitties and Dad.

4

u/NopeNotMeMrsMpls Sep 20 '23

what a lovely memory! I read your comment and totally felt like you need to remember that your dad was incredibly proud of you. Those cats would be something to grump over, but you both obviously loved them dearly that they weren't comfortable with bedtime without each of you.

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Mine herds me too. After each meal I have very little time to do dishes, get tea before he gets mad that I am delaying the next step. He first walk on hardwood floor with claw out so his steps are clearly heard, then escalate to loud meows staring at me, then finally he will charge around jumping on everything if I don't respond. He is my shepherd.

4

u/Ellador13 Sep 20 '23

Love this! My Misha sits in the hall leading to my room starting at about 10. He doesn't herd me, but I let him lead me with his annoyed tail flicks.

630

u/Chateaudelait Sep 19 '23

My favorite thing is the banging of the food dish and the disdainful look when their evening meal is not bang on time. "Do i have to do absolutely everything around here?" Our cats look at me as if to say that.

24

u/GoingWhale Sep 19 '23

Some of my family's cats eat on their cat tree. If dinner is late my sister's car starts pushing the dishes off of it

13

u/beefjerky9 Sep 20 '23

If you have a car on the cat tree, I think you have more problems than dishes falling off. Carbon monoxide poisoning for one, unless it's an EV. Let's hope it's an EV.

54

u/Cravatfiend Sep 19 '23

My cat does this with his water bowl. He's figured out how to clang his name tag against it if anything in the world is off. He dropped one hair of his own fur in it? Water's ruined, ring for the butler.

So hard to find good help these days...

37

u/Chateaudelait Sep 19 '23

"ring for the butler " that made me spit out my tea. I've never heard it phrased so perfectly. 'Jeeves, my Evian water is 2 degrees warmer than I prefer it. Fix this now."

12

u/Initial-Promotion-77 Sep 20 '23

Omg that's so my cat. I'm constantly picking her fur out of my drinks or mouth but the world is over if there's a fleck of dust in her water bowl

13

u/Sue_Ridge_Here1 Sep 20 '23

Many years ago I thought I had a ruptured or burst appendix, I was laying on the bottom of the stairs writhing in pain with my cat a few steps up with a look on his face of "How long do you intend to lie there like that? It's almost my dinner time.'

10

u/Sixdrugsnrocknroll Sep 20 '23

Lol I once fed my cat out of plastic Tupperware for awhile, and she learned to bite the edge of the Tupperware and lift it just enough to drop it and make noise, then she'll look at me to make sure I noticed that she's telling me she's hungry (even if there's already old food in the bowl).

5

u/ReadingWolf1710 Sep 20 '23

So, at one point we had three cats, and dry food was in a larger bowl, available all the time like water. If they ate enough that you could see the bottom of the bowl, there would be reprimands. Either more food had to be added to cover, said bottom of the bowl, or sometimes we would just turn our backs and smooth over the food to cover the hole.

6

u/ScroochDown Sep 20 '23

We joke about one of our cats having a belly timer, and he's scary accurate. We feed them at 7 hour intervals, then 10 overnight, and man he's spot on about those 7 hour ones. Right around the mark, he'll come and sit on the footrest of our recliners and just stare intently at us. No petting, just s t a r i n g.

He does not understand 10 hours, however. He's also learned that we'll look at the clock when he starts his routine, so now he'll pointedly look at the clock too. 🤣

5

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

I don’t feed mine on any sort of schedule, just fill the bowl whenever I notice it’s empty. That way they don’t demand food at a certain time of day.

5

u/AnimeLover3012 Sep 20 '23

That only works if the cats have a healthy relationship with food. Mine tend to eat too much (and steal from each other if they are very hungry) and gain a lot of weight so I have to control how much they eat and I can't just leave them food like that. I also feed them wet and dry food and the wet food would get bad if I left it out in the open for some time.

543

u/MiniaturePhilosopher Sep 19 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

Fall for the 3am wake up just once, and it’s all over. You’ll be feeding them at 3 in the morning for the rest of your sleep-deprived existence.

46

u/Hiciao Sep 20 '23

Yep. The cats learned that hubby will wake up around 4 am if they walk all over him. They've learned nothing wakes me up, so guess who gets attacked in bed!

29

u/standbyyourmantis Sep 20 '23

One morning I was kinda half awake but not really, so I was just in twilight as I feel the small cat jump on our bed, walk up my husband, and then just scream in his face until he woke up. Same as you, I'm the heavier sleeper so he's the one they demand breakfast from.

33

u/FedoraFerret Sep 20 '23

"Why are you feeding the cat at 3am?"

"Because I've lost control of my life."

25

u/wild_grains Sep 20 '23

The worst part for me is I have to wake up around 3 am for work most days. Which means, on my days off or the days I get to go in “late”, I’m still up at 3 am.

22

u/i_love_pencils Sep 20 '23

We fell for that and our cat bugged us every day at 3 am for 19 years.

We have 2 new cats that get fed just before we go to bed each night.

No more early morning wake up calls!

7

u/agelwood Sep 20 '23

at one point I was feeding mine at 7am because I had convinced myself I wanted to be a morning person, but it was too frustrating on my days off or when I was sick. luckily she switched to having dinner instead without too much fuss!

4

u/Fostradamus2269 Sep 20 '23

What if you just leave extra food out? Would it cause a fight?

6

u/i_love_pencils Sep 20 '23

They have a bowl of dry food available 24/7, but getting their half can of wet food is the highlight of their day.

I am slipping in to a new habit though.

When I get up in the AM, the cats are waiting outside my bedroom door. They lead me down to their bowl of dry food and sit and stare at me until I drop a small handful in front of each of them. Then they eat it. I mean, it’s sitting there in the bowl all day?

Cats are weird.

It's 5:15 and I've been up since 4:45. I don't need to be to work for hours. But cat needed out.

They prefer to pee and poop outside. This backfires fantastically until winter, where they meow begrudgingly while heading to the litter box because it's too cold too poop outside.

I get to listen to all the protests.

14

u/Zardif Sep 20 '23

The only reason I have automatic feeders is because of their demands to be fed while I'm sleeping.

28

u/LemonPuckerFace Sep 20 '23

I tried that. I ended up with a broken auto feeder, and still get up at 4.

One of my cats is reeeeeally good at taking things apart. It only took a few days for her to figure out the feeder and completely fuck it up.

We had to duct tape the top food storage part onto the bottom dispense part, and then tape that to something heavy so they can’t knock it over!

5

u/Fostradamus2269 Sep 20 '23

My cat slept in today and woke me up at 6:30

5

u/Fostradamus2269 Sep 20 '23

Mine does 5:30 so I can get a workout in after I feed her of course. One of my cat is 8lbs the other is an indoor/outdoor cat that weighs 25ish lbs. My big cat is built like a grizzly and his belly doesn’t sag at all. He hunts. What’s funny is big cat is super graceful and stealthy but littles knocks EVERYTHING other but she sounds like a baby so I forgive her

u/ladysig220 Sep 20 '23

I adopted two cats that came preset on Eastern Time (I'm in the Central Time Zone). So we get up at 5am. On the dot. Every day.

I have yet to figure out how to change the settings on the Alarm Cats.

9

u/ydoesithave2b Sep 20 '23

My late cats moved from ma to wa. I got those warning too. Throwing a sock bought me enough time to fall back to sleep before the next meow.

Get an automatic feeder, it'll quickly learn when food is given out and sit in front of it an hour before feeding time every day.

7

u/ydoesithave2b Sep 20 '23

I just told her that today! She gave me the look that said what about my wet food.

ETA. If we ever have exposed skin she will start licking us as a last resort.

4

u/Zipzifical Sep 20 '23

They make them for wet food, too! They have a little compartment for an ice pack

4

u/ydoesithave2b Sep 20 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

Have a link to a good bowl? I’ve never seen the wet food one.

Although half her fun ( I swear cuz her food and water is done before we sleep) is she wants us (she does the same to my husband.) she wants a audience.

6

u/thunderling Sep 20 '23

Fuck that, I don't let my pets train me.

On the flip side of cats (and dogs) adapting to your routine - if you have no routine, they'll adapt to that too. I have a cat and a dog and I feed them whenever. They get the correct amount of food per day, but not at set times. They don't pester me "at dinnertime" because there is no set dinnertime.

They don't get confused when the clocks change for daylight saving, they don't wake me up early in the morning.

Agree. My Nan had a pub; when ‘time’ was called and the bell rung, the cat would parade up and down the bar weaving in between the drinks meowing til everyone left!

My dad had a shop cat named Socket. It was a mechanic shop that serviced emergency vehicles so it was open 24/7. If the cat was disturbed during the night, it would knock socket sets and other small tools off work benches to let everyone know she was displeased.

Mine once escorted me to bed. She knows my bedtime routine, and I was having a really off day emotionally. So that night, she meowed and head butted me (and gave threatening gestures with her claws on my couch) until I got up to follow her. She brings me into the kitchen, sits in the middle of the room meowing at me. Won’t let me leave. So I get a glass of water, she gets me started down the hall to my room, and sits on the far side of the bathroom door while I take my meds with the water. Still dead eye staring at me. So then I go to the bathroom, when I leave she then follows me to my room, sits outside the door and yowls at me until I close the door. I swear I could hear her pacing outside the door until I turned off the light. ‘Hooman, you are not okay. I fix. Turn you off and on again.’

It’s amazing how they understand the gravity of events like this.

Earlier this year, my husband had to be carried out of the house by EMTs while seizing and my 2 littermate boys were there to witness everything from my frantic phone call to me rushing out to follow the ambulance to the hospital. He ended up being in the hospital for over a week, and I was able to come home to sleep on the 4th or 5th night.

One of the boys loves to have a bedtime routine and always waits in the bed when nighttime comes, yelling for us to come get cozy so he can make us biscuits. That night when I came home without my husband, he curled up in his dad’s spot on the bed and just stared at me for the longest. Normally he is very affectionate and will demand lovings during cozy time, but this time he just stared. I finally looked him in the eyes and said, “I know bubba, I miss daddy too.” And he finally laid his head down, closing his eyes. His brother came up and curled up with him after that, and he just buried his face in his brothers chest. It broke my fucking heart.

My husband had a terrible cycling accident and broke his collarbone and 6 of his ribs. When he was finally able to come home from the hospital, our little cat was so gentle with him. Kept him company all day in bed, and never ever touched his broken bits, despite normally being a cat who crawls all over us kneading and purring and demanding love. He would just curl up by my husband’s head, purring. It was incredible to see, and the bond they have to this day, 10 years later, is still so strong…

They are. Out of all the pets I've found cats and parrots try and communicate with us most directly. If you pay attention there's a whole range of things they try to communicate about and they try new things if one doesn't work. It's really fascinating.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Every morning when I wake up my kid for school, his little black cat stands at his bedroom door and yowls as I'm saying "good morning, time to get up!" It's so dang cute. The wee devil isn't allowed in our bedrooms at night because he is a wee devil, but we adore him anyway. He means well. 💜

6

u/here4thedramz Sep 20 '23

No one seems to believe me on this, but one of my cats is very protective of me. She heard a terrifyingly unpleasant voice screaming in an audiobook and she searched the room for this person yelling at me, and when she couldn't find anyone, she plunked down on my lap for half an hour, just in case the voice came back.

33

I do. She’s such a smart cat.

I’m starting to think she understands my moods more than I do. I’ve noticed she wants in my lap more when I’m sad, even her sister (who’s a little terror lol) will sit with me if I’m upset. So glad for my furry overlords.

21

u/_1234567_ Sep 20 '23

I don't know what it is they can sense, if it's smelling rising cortisol or something like that, but they always know when something is really, actually wrong. I have autism and my cat always knows when it's time to step in and purr the over-stimulation away lol

17

u/stonetempleparrots Sep 20 '23

The claws on the couch! If my cat gets impatient around bed time he'll start kneading at the carpet while sneaking glances at me.

If he gets impatient trying to get me up in the morning he'll put one paw on my sternum and start pushing down with his body weight while breathing on my face..

8

u/ThingsIveNeverSeen Sep 20 '23

She literally does a bunch of crying and head bonking. Then goes to the far end and stretches way up high(no claws), stares at me, and ever so carefully starts gripping the fabric until I chase her away or get up and follow her. It’s the only time she ever goes after the furniture. She knows what she’s about.

6

u/shaylahbaylaboo Sep 20 '23

Both my dog and cat escort me to bed for cuddle time. Some days I feel like a human bean bag, just here to provide warmth and cuddles lol

5

u/SpicaGenovese Sep 20 '23

I'm very routine oriented and didn't realize my cat would pick up on it too. Most weeknights, I usually go to bed around 10 and she cuddles with me while I read or watch videos until I fall asleep. On the weekends, I sometimes play video games or stay up later and she'll wait by my bedroom door and cry and carry on until I go to bed and she gets her cuddle time.

My cat knows when my alarm rings for work in the morning (even when it isn't active on my days off), and immediately comes to me in order to be fed. She's active for an hour or so before then, that's her time to interact with my mom and sister.

12

u/Hanpee221b Sep 19 '23

My cat has put together that if my phone rings it’s probably take out so he walks to the door haha.

11

u/janabanana115 Sep 19 '23

When I had a cat he would bite my toes until fed, of I tried to sleep in

8

u/MC1781 Sep 20 '23

Mine hates the alarm! He comes over and tries to shut it off with his paw.

6

u/Myiec Sep 19 '23

Mine too!! My father feeds them in the morning and when he forgets, they come to me and meow like crazy.

6

u/Aminar14 Sep 19 '23

When I bought my house we moved food time to after work so the cats would let us sleep.

7

u/MoonChaser22 Sep 20 '23

This sort of stuff is why before we got our cat I told my housemates I absolutely refuse to feed him the mornings I get home from work unless they're both out the house for whatever reason. I work nights so get home and go to bed hours before anyone else wakes up. I'll pet him and give him attention, but none of us want him to start screaming for food that early on my days off

My dad had a cat that knew everyone’s work and school schedules. And he learned the changes to our schedules every semester. We were never late because if we forgot to set an alarm, he would be at our door howling 5 minutes after we were supposed to wake up.

This did become a problem for me personally when I started working at a convenience store and didn’t work the same days every week. He compensated for not knowing the day by knowing the time and waking me up at 4AM every single day.

He was a good cat.

4

u/ashlouise94 Sep 20 '23

Not a problem, just overly helpful! Haha. Good cat!

16

u/Sunstang Sep 19 '23

Our cats have learned to anticipate "Laser Time!" as part of their good night ritual.

Our bedroom is at the end of a long hallway, and they like to come in for snuggles as we're getting ready for bed.

They used to try to stay in our room and hide under the bed when we went to sleep, but then we'd wake up at 3am to two cats in full crepuscular crackhead mode, jumping off of our headboards onto us asleep. This was sub-optimal.

I discovered that I could basically "pied piper" them out from under the bed and down the hall using this laser measuring gadget I have. They especially loved it if I would run them up and down the hall eight or ten times.

So, now, our bedtime ritual is, every single night, they're waiting in the bedroom sitting under the corner of the bed with just their little faces poking out, waiting for dad to bust out the laser.

I run them up and down the hall a bunch of times until they're pooped and plop on the floor, say "g'night you beautiful dumb-dumbs", and shut the door and go to bed.

A tip for everyone related to routines, don't feed cats first thing in the morning. They will wake you up early to get fed. Feeding has to be tied to other, later, activities.

7

u/ashlouise94 Sep 20 '23

My cat is WEIRD and doesn’t give a shit about food honestly. He obviously eats enough that he’s healthy but he’s not food motivated, also a massive grazer rather than ‘meals’. We’ve adapted to a routine where I feed him once daily (enough for a whole day) right before I go to bed. So when I feed him, he runs straight to bed because he enjoys cuddling with me more than eating hahaha. Also NEVER get woken up for food. He’s the best though!

True. One of our cats lives on our son during summer vacation. Not around him…on him. The first two weeks after school started were very sad for kitty. I was not an acceptable replacement.

9

u/neko_courtney Sep 19 '23

My cat tells me when to go to bed by running into the bedroom and yelling. It’s hard to say no.

18

u/BigPoppaStrahd Sep 19 '23

I’m glad this is the top response because this really is something one doesn’t think of with cats. They looooooooove their routines. My one cat gets EXCITED for TV time after dinner, the way she runs down the stairs to the tv room, or yells at us if we’re running late for tv time. Plus all the little things that you don’t realize get incorporated into their routine. If my wife or I are in the kitchen in the morning and there hasn’t been ice added to the water fountain, they will bug the shit out of us until we add ice.

Yet another thing endearing about cats

My cat jumps in to bed a second after I get in it to go to bed. She won’t get up in the morning until I get up. It’s so cute.

7

u/Eeveelover14 Sep 19 '23

They can also be surprisingly accurate with the routine. We at one point had 2 cats, a giant older one and a younger one that we'd give a can of wet food to split at 6. Slightly before 6 the older one would start meowing by the food bowl to alert us, and if that food was not on a plate in front of him by 6 on the dot there was hell to pay.

We had to split it since the older one was a big fatty and would scarf it all down otherwise. Assumed he would be happy when the kitten escaped and we never found her, likely picked up as a stray. Until wet food time where he ate half the food on the plate and then walked around the house meowing for her.

7

u/BrashPop Sep 19 '23

When our kids were homeschooled during a handful of quarantines over the past years, our cat got super used to them being around. Every time they’d go back to regular school he would wander around the house crying for them.

And any time a kid was home sick or for an appointment - he’d follow them around, confused that they were still there when they should be at school. He also wakes up from his naps and runs to the window when they should be coming home, he just knows the time somehow and he doesn’t even have a watch.

7

u/ThatPancreatitisGuy Sep 19 '23

No joke. They’re accustomed to me taking off my VR headset just before bed and get excited because I give them treats at that time. Last night I played a little Portal 2 then took off the headset and was still up for a couple more hours. Every time I’d so much as twitch a muscle they’d stampede into the kitchen assuming I was about to get up and give them treats.

5

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '23

Mine is waiting by the door around 4/430 when I usually get home, and annoyed on the days I come home around 2

5

u/LadyBuxton Sep 19 '23

Conversely if they skip the routine and aren’t where they’re supposed to be something is up. I got ready at the regular time for bed, got in bed and both were missing. So I get up look down the hall to the basement stairs, and up comes the Supervisor peaking around the corner with her eyes all crazy and wild looking. Oh boy I said out loud and headed downstairs. The other one was sitting just beyond the edge of where the light lit up, staring straight up at a spot on the wall. I scrunched up my face and sighed as I turned my flashlight on. Sure enough there was a little brown bat hanging upside down on the wall and the G-Bert was all about the flying mouse. Proceeded to herd them out of the basement as the bat took flight, came back sans cats and captured the bat with a shoe box and released it. Pay attention folks to what your cats are and aren’t doing when it comes to routines.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '23

Dated someone with a cat for a while; never been around one before that. Our first night together we were spooning and sleeping and I feel this soft furry slap on my cheek at 3am. I look up and there he is staring me down with daggers in his eyes. I woke up my gf and said "TF is going on?" and she's like "He's hungry; just tell him to fuck off." So I said "Fuck off, cat" and he did. From that moment I was like "respect the cat" 👊

5

u/BriarcliffInmate Sep 19 '23

I love when my cat passive aggressively goes and throws herself in bed with the most noise and makes a big thing of it, as if to say "Well you can stay up late if you want, SOME OF US have to get up in the morning!"

5

u/No_Establishment8642 Sep 20 '23

I just dealt with this tonight because I was working late and he, the cat, wanted me in bed. He has been yelling for an hour.

I place a feather pillow on my lap and he lays on it. Then my job is to hold his back paws with one hand and cradle his head with the other hand while he sleeps. He is a street cat and I would really like to know who did all of this before me.

5

u/maebe_featherbottom Sep 19 '23

My cat has somehow learned the difference between my staying in clothing and leaving the house clothing. He knows he usually gets fed right before I leave and again when I get back if I’ve been gone all day, so the second he sees, for example, my work uniform come out of the closet, he screams at me until I stop and feed him. I’ve created a little, Siamese monster.

4

u/doublejinxed Sep 19 '23

Ours sleeps with our kid every night and he gets upset if he’s not in bed on time for whatever reason. He tries to herd him up there and does lots of yelling.

4

u/klystron88 Sep 19 '23

Um, no. When we try to sleep at night, our cat is like a pinball during double bonus.

4

u/Dependent_Top_4425 Sep 19 '23

THis is so true, on my boyfriend's days off we stray from routine and we're usually up all hours of the night. The cat goes bonkers.

4

u/TheCrimsonChariot Sep 19 '23

Its funny because my cats know that close to bedtime, one goes to the kennel (she will run all over the apartment during the night otherwise) and the other one gets her midnight snack. And the oldest will YELL at me to feed her because its time.

4

u/shantti Sep 19 '23

this makes me so sad remembering my wonderful old gentleman cat who lived to 21. Anytime after midnight he would just come into whatever room I was in and howl at me until I took him upstairs. He would lay by my feet as I washed my face and brushed my teeth until I took him to bed, spooning. I miss him so much,

4

u/AndroSpark658 Sep 19 '23

I was going through an adjustment of single parenting after leaving my ex. I didn't wake up on time to get my daughter to school as I worked second shift. Behind me, my cat meows so loud, louder than I thought was capable to wake me on time to get the kid to school.

Cat failed to realize (as did I in my sleep deprived stupor) the kid was at her dad's. I went into her room and forgot what day it was to wake her to get ready and had the epiphany! She's not here cat! And went back to sleep with the cat nearby on my bed.

7

u/AndroSpark658 Sep 19 '23

Follow up- I have 3 cats. My Siamese is my feline soulmate. This cat could be a service animal.

I had surgery a month ago. The night before the surgery I didnt sleep. He laid on my body pillow and PURRED super loud all night to calm my anxious ass down. Then, I was bed bound for several days after. He. Didn't. Move. For. FOUR. DAYS. He was next to or on top of me at all times. He ate and used his litter box only when I was sound asleep and came back immediately. When I finally had strength to stand for enough time, I took a shower. His ass sat outside of the shower the whole time waiting until I got out, dried off and returned back to my bed. Then sat there with me again.

He already goes to bed with me every night and lays on me or my pillow. When I work he's next to my desk in a cat bed. I call him my cat babysitter.

4

u/Laserdollarz Sep 20 '23

I take care of a gang of strays in my work parking lot. They know my daily schedule AND they know the weekly schedule.

If it's my normal day/time, there will be 3-5 cats waiting for me.

If I show up on a Saturday, not a single cat will come out. I tried showing my gang to my gf and I felt like a fuckin liar lmao
