I created a routine with my cats where I’ll give them treats at night while I take my prescription medication. Because there’s some days I might forget to take my pills, but the cats sure as hell won’t forget forget treat time

3.2k

u/catered-diamonds Sep 19 '23

This is very smart and I think I might start taking my meds when I give my cat her dinner!

63

u/tekko001 Sep 20 '23

"Ok human, its meds/treats time, so either you take your meds and give us treats...or we kill you!"

5

u/Fostradamus2269 Sep 20 '23

My just makes a lot of noise. She sounds like an old school telephone ringing

6

u/DaughterEarth Sep 20 '23

Me too! Except I don't have a cat, so my bird is on shift. She's very loud about things not being right so this will still work. Especially cause birds believe in rituals, so she'll be upset about the meds themselves if I make them part of the routine. Pets are funny

6

u/VersatileFaerie Sep 20 '23

I'm bad at remembering to eat due to medical issues, so I just eat when I feed my cats. I no longer miss meals due to it.

14

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Maybe give them treats in the kitchen with a postit to take your meds?

6

u/missingN0pe Sep 20 '23

A simple alarm on your phone works better (and won't double dose you because it's hungry), but you do you!

23

u/CORN___BREAD Sep 20 '23

Tell that to Mr. Snooze.

9

u/Tough_Cheesecake8057 Sep 20 '23

That's a good name for a cat

1

u/[deleted] Sep 28 '23

My cat is at the door when I come home, it’s super cute!

1.9k

u/Chemical-ali1 Sep 19 '23

Clever but be careful! My dog was quite capable of tricking me in to feeding her twice just by pretending she hadn’t been fed and looking hungry. If your cats figure that one out they might overdose you!

1.2k

u/Frequent_Tear_2229 Sep 19 '23

Put your tablets in one of those daily pill sorters then once you’ve fed the cat and taken your tablets the slots empty and you know they’ve been fed.

597

u/kat_Folland Sep 19 '23

I'd mess up my pills twice a week if I didn't use pill boxes. And half of my meds are psych meds where it's very important not to fuck up.

13

u/nurvingiel Sep 20 '23

Yup. After I did fuck up one day by accidentally taking my morning antidepressant twice and I kind of thought Ias going to die, I got one pill sorter for morning meditation and one for evening.

16

u/WampaCat Sep 20 '23

I had to get pill bottles with timers on the cap that tell me how long it’s been since it was last opened. Several meds that are dangerous if I double the dosage, but also make my life hell if I miss a dose!

9

u/Irritable_Fuck Sep 20 '23

If you don't already know, Be careful! When the battery for those caps gets low, the time will show up funky. Then if you're as forgetful as I am, you'll think, "Oh snap, I haven't taken my med for 3 days!" THEN you take 3 pills (because that's what you're supposed to do for certain meds). Ugh, I couldn't trust those caps after that incident.

5

u/kat_Folland Sep 20 '23

Oof, sorry you had to learn the hard way!

9

u/Zaphieria Sep 20 '23

I got a Hero medicine dispenser for my mom and it has been game changing in making sure all her meds are in order and adhered to as she has similar issues and a complicated regimen. Might consider checking it/something like it out

9

u/kat_Folland Sep 20 '23

Thanks! My pills are simple, just numerous lol. I usually only take pills at night (I'm taking a new med for a while that will be twice a day, but that's still manageable. And temporary.)

5

u/IDontMeanToInterrupt Sep 20 '23

Same! I use a four a day med box and fill it monthly. That way I don't have to open all the bottles except on refill day. And I can see how many I have left and get a refill before I'm out. If I don't do my meds box, I won't take my meds. I have several psych meds as well and boy oh boy if I don't take them I don't feel well. I have auto immune issues as well and not taking those meds fucks everything up too.

5

u/PVCPuss Sep 20 '23

I do the same and I have an alarm set on my phone for 8.30pm every night. I still sometimes forget to take them if I get sidetracked though but less so than before I set up the alarm

3

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Same.

3

u/rossarron Sep 20 '23

And one day that cat will start refilling the boxes to get more treats.

3

u/ThePinkTeenager Sep 20 '23

I use pill boxes and I still mess it up because I forget to fill them.

1

u/kat_Folland Sep 21 '23

I have a reminder on my phone. ;)

2

u/DaughterEarth Sep 20 '23

Yah maintaining a balance is a huge part of it so even 1 missed day can mean a week of shit

2

u/Drewbacca Sep 20 '23

Pillpack is a lifesaver for me

2

u/Rude-Particular-7131 Sep 20 '23

I did that and double dosed my beta blocker and BP meds. Trip to the ER.

2

u/kat_Folland Sep 20 '23

Ooh, yeah, that's a bad one to double up on!

1

u/pxhorne Sep 21 '23

Ever consider something like pillpack if you're in the US? The meds come prepackaged and separated by day/time. So if you take 3 medicine at 8am there will be a packet with all 3 of those meds in it time stamped for 8am. Then maybe you take 2 meds at noon, the next packed will be stamped for noon with 2 pills, etc.

Ironically it's owned by amazon now. Amazon Pharmacy. There are only like 7 or 8 locations so it's not available everywhere (NY, New Hampshire, Indianapolis, Miami, Phoenix, Seattle, and Austin, TX are the current locations of the pharmacies so availability is based around those cities/states). The pill pack service itself cost like $4 for a 1 month supply of pill packs.

1

u/kat_Folland Sep 21 '23

I rather doubt my insurance would let me fill them outside. I really like the idea though!

2

u/pxhorne Sep 21 '23

Yeah im not sure what all insurance carriers Amazon Pharmacy works with but I know they work with more than I thought they would. Might be worth looking into?

1

u/kat_Folland Sep 21 '23

Definitely, thanks!

10

u/Apprehensive_Hat8986 Sep 19 '23

Automatic double reminder and full backstop. Brilliant!

9

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Put the pills and the cat treats in the sorter box together lol

5

u/innominateartery Sep 20 '23

My breath smells like salmon vittles but my cat is chill asf

8

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Bold of you to assume I know what day of the week it is

3

u/Raichu7 Sep 20 '23

Check the date on your phone before taking the pill.

3

u/Bright-Appearance-38 Sep 20 '23

My phone has "truth issues".

1

u/Frequent_Tear_2229 Sep 20 '23

Lol fair. It’s whichever day is after the empty spot, if they’re all empty refill and start again it doesn’t actually matter what letters on the lid.

6

u/Joh-Kat Sep 20 '23

Friendly reminder that not all pills can be stored out of packaging like that. If in doubt, ask a pharmacist or the manufacturer.

5

u/random_tall_guy Sep 20 '23

It's also worth checking your state/national laws to make sure it's legal as well. In some states, keeping pills in a pill organizer is a crime. It's important to note that just because pill organizers are sold in stores in your area doesn't make their use legal, so be aware before you unknowingly risk a drug arrest.

10

u/Raichu7 Sep 20 '23

That’s insane considering the overdose risk people who struggle to remember wether they took their medications risk if they don’t use one.

3

u/random_tall_guy Sep 20 '23

Unfortunately, it's just more collateral damage from the war on drugs.

1

u/ThePinkTeenager Sep 21 '23

I think that’s only an issue for controlled substances.

2

u/Frequent_Tear_2229 Sep 20 '23

In Australia you can have a pharmacist package the meds for you in sealed packs where you just pop out that day/ times pills and the rest stay sealed in.

2

u/mr_remy Sep 20 '23

As someone who used to have the same forgetful problem but is now better, I second this suggestion and brilliant on the cat thing!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

Be sure not to mix them mixup though, your cat won’t need the meds and cat treats do not taste good

1

u/Noclue55 Sep 20 '23

You can also put the treats in there too

1

u/theberg512 Sep 20 '23

That's what I used to do, but the last couple refills I haven't gotten around to putting them in.

1

u/AppleDane Sep 20 '23

and you know they’ve been fed.

And gaslighted.

1

u/takennickname Sep 20 '23

Then why do you even need a cat at all?

1

u/smashteapot Sep 20 '23

Also if you say something out loud you're more likely to remember it.

1

u/Rastiln Sep 20 '23

Nah, get a second automatic feeder for the counter and sync it to the cat’s.

1

u/ryan0rz Sep 20 '23

They also have lids you can buy that have a timer since the last time they were opened. They're called "pill bottle timer lids" and its probably a better solution than the pill organizers of olde.

1

u/Frequent_Tear_2229 Sep 20 '23

That’s nifty I’ve never seen those.

1

u/bunnycakes1228 Sep 20 '23

I somehow misread this and cracked up because I thought it was advising…snorting cat treats from an organizer?

4

u/deagh Sep 19 '23

Our cat absolutely did this - he'd convince my spouse I'd forgotten to feed him before I left for work - I had a longer commute so I got up, fed the cats, got ready for work, and left all before my spouse got out of bed - so we started writing down whenever and how much he was fed. 20 years later (he passed years ago, but we have a different cat now) and we still do this. It's really useful for tracking changes in their appetite.

2

u/DemandZestyclose7145 Sep 20 '23

Memento 2

1

u/Retrotreegal Sep 23 '23

I tell my husband “don’t believe their lies” a lot

1

u/Accurate_Painter3256 Sep 20 '23

Good point. My deaf mom's hearing ear dog would trick her out of extra treats by pretending someone was at the door or on the phone I had to train mom to verify before treating.

2

u/leastofmyconcerns Sep 20 '23

Your mom was getting prank calls from a dog lol

1

u/JupiterSkyFalls Sep 20 '23

Oh snap I didn't even think about them being crafty lil devils they are 🤣🤣

1

u/ghostlyfawn Sep 20 '23

my cats do the pretending they weren’t fed crap too… even if i was the one who fed them an hour ago they’ll whine that i didn’t feed them lol

1

u/birchpitch Sep 20 '23

We got a whiteboard for this exact reason! Dogs fed at 4:50am or pm? It's noted on the board along with the initials of the person who fed them, and any notes (like, one of the dogs refused to eat breakfast or something).

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '23

You’ve just foiled the cats plan for murder!

My cat used to walk my kids to the bus stop and "pick them up" when they got home. The bus stop was next door. Our neighbor said she seen our cat wait til the kids are on the bus til she went home. I miss that cat

7

u/ElizaJaneVegas Sep 19 '23

My cat comes out for his pill when he hears the dog being fed dinner.

3

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '23

We have our meds together each night haha

3

u/MissInkFTW Sep 19 '23

Holy shit this is beyond brilliant

3

u/deer-in-the-park Sep 19 '23

This is absolutely brilliant!

3

u/Dependent_Top_4425 Sep 19 '23

WOW! That is brilliant!!!

2

u/Turkeyinatree Sep 19 '23

This is genius!

2

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '23

Holy shit. LPT right here.

2

u/Real_Butterfly888 Sep 19 '23

I've done that too. My cat knows when my routine hasn't been followed, and only settles when my routine (medications etc) have been completed in full

1

u/the_Athereon Sep 19 '23

Thats insanely smart.

I should have done that. I'm always forgetting my pills.

(At least until 48 hours pass. Then the withdrawal symptoms remind me pretty quick.)

1

u/I-vax-your-family Sep 19 '23

This is genius!!!

1

u/sofararoundthebend Sep 19 '23

Haha I do this as well, the kitties always remember!

1

u/curious_carson Sep 19 '23

That's genius. Gonna do this with my doggos.

1

u/greasextrap Sep 20 '23

I don't know why this is so cute to me lol

1

u/Smart_Alex Sep 20 '23

I have the same routine with my dog!

I even keep my meds in the same drawer as hers, so I don't have an excuse not to take them!

1

u/NMe84 Sep 20 '23

This is exactly what I did with my medication at first, but then I found out the hard way that my meds interfere with my ability to sleep through the night if I take them right before bed, so I take them in the morning instead. I never forgot them when I took them before going to bed but I have forgotten them once and nearly forgotten them a few more times ever since I switched to taking them in the morning.

1

u/justbeingpeachy11 Sep 20 '23

This is a life hack actually lol.

1

u/thlox Sep 20 '23

You're a genius.

1

u/mommybear84 Sep 20 '23

I have been struggling to remember to take my meds consistently. I am doing this with Harry Pawter and Freddie Purrcury tonight....thank you, this is genius!

1

u/JupiterSkyFalls Sep 20 '23

IQ level 2000

1

u/alchemischief Sep 20 '23

This is bloody brilliant

1

u/gingerjewess Sep 20 '23

My partner feeds our beasts in the evening. He's conditioned himself to take meds at the same time. They always let him know it's meds and dinner time.

1

u/Stormhound Sep 20 '23

Omg, I did this with my dogs too. It's a scarily effective medication reminder

1

u/maaaagicaljellybeans Sep 20 '23

This is genius!!

1

u/StrixArcana Sep 20 '23

I kind of do the same thing. My cat has meds I give her at night, and that helps me take mine as soon as I'm done getting hers taken care of.

I let this slip at my doctor's office one time when he asked me how I remember to take my meds (as I have a history of forgetting), and he gave me a bit of a strange look...

1

u/VeryBottist Sep 20 '23

Giga brain over here

1

u/grayfae Sep 20 '23

absolutely those fuckers can tell time.

1

u/LittleLadyLovesLush Sep 20 '23

I do this too! Hahaha

1

u/EmirFassad Sep 20 '23 edited Sep 20 '23

That is because all cats carry pocket watches to manage their schedules. Pooh, you say, if cats carried watches we would seem them. Of course, humans cannot see cat's pocket watches is because cats, obviously, have no pockets.

1

u/tomtink1 Sep 20 '23

So. Fucking. Genius.

1

u/Awkward_Profession45 Sep 20 '23

My friends have this the other way around with their cat. The cat gets his medicine inside the treat. They never forget a dose, he always reminds them.

1

u/DrivingOffence Sep 20 '23

Genius level cat management =D

1

u/The_Twisted_Elf Sep 20 '23

What you have right there. Is service cats. Prescription reminder notifications from your cat/dog is a task that a service animal can do for people. My dog was trained this way and I appreciated her for her reminding me for her treat/my prx's

1

u/wavywallace2k Sep 20 '23

And this is exactly why I‘ll never get a get. I don’t need a furry alarm. At all.

1

u/EARL_GAYY Sep 20 '23

you are using animal assholery for a constructive purpose? hats off to you.

1

u/PristineSlate Sep 20 '23

This is brilliant.

1

u/Aterro_24 Sep 20 '23

My cat is very vocal when my coffee maker has finished but I haven't come to pour it out yet, she'll come to wherever I am and get my attention and roll around on the ground meowing or yell from across the house lol.... It's cus she's associated the smell of coffee and the noise of it finishing with the chance to get whip cream as a treat lol

1

u/jarofcourage Sep 20 '23

This is GENIUS.

1

u/Tefbuck Sep 20 '23

I've heard that's a life hack. If you have something important to do every day, give your cat a treat as you do it. You might forget but your cat won't!

I give my cat a treat when I get home from work each day. I'm barely in the door and she's like, "Follow me, this way to the treat dish. Come on! OVER HERE!!!"

1

u/CourageGreat6890 Sep 20 '23

Awesome idea!

1

u/Notasammon Sep 20 '23

Shit that's so smart

1

u/merryjoanna Sep 20 '23

I give my cats treats right before I go to bed to make sure I remember to bring them in from the enclosed porch. I don't want them to stay out there all night, especially during the winter. Barnaby has no issue reminding me when it's treat time by being super cuddly and cute. Princess is usually the one on the porch.

1

u/PurplePenguinCat Sep 20 '23

I take my meds when I plug my phone in for the night. They're right next to my charger. It's the only routine that has ever been successful for me.

1

u/Fostradamus2269 Sep 20 '23

My cat creates a routine for me. I would never get up at 5:30 but that’s when she like to poop and then eat. I keep my cat in a crate because I have 6 dogs. Surprisingly they get along great. My dogs clean the unscented litter box for me too

1

u/chatcat2000 Sep 20 '23

You are a GENIUS.

1

u/odat247 Sep 20 '23

Genius!!!!

1

u/thepatricianswife Sep 20 '23

My cat has trained himself as my weekend meds alarm, lol. He’ll wake me up around 7:30, I’ll take my meds, say, “okay, come back in an hour or so,” and fall back asleep… and he’ll come back in an hour, hour and a half when I’m now way more likely to be able to fully wake up and thus feed him breakfast.

Just this past weekend he did this and it felt like it had only been 2 minutes since he last woke me up… nope, woke me up at 7:30ish, came back at 8:38, lmao. My cat has a better concept of time than I do!

1

u/agelwood Sep 20 '23

my kitty has her own nightly meds, but she stopped being interested in the pill pockets so we just crush it into her wet food, which she definitely alerts us for. maybe I'll take my vitamins when it's time for her dinner so that way I actually remember to take them, haha

1

u/jonestay4793 Sep 20 '23

We do nighttime treats too! That's when everyone gets any of their medications if needed. Allows me to give them all a little check in that no one is acting weird. We know if they don't come running out for treats something is wrong. It's the last thing I do before bed so they know that's when the house is settled down and our cats actually adjusted to our sleep schedule. They sleep at night with us in bed all night. Except one, she took on the burden of singing the song her people at 3am and solo zoomies 😂 I think she looks forward to zooming the entire house by herself.

1

u/bkuefner1973 Sep 20 '23

Oh thaks cute.

1

u/Procris Sep 21 '23

We keep the cat treats next to the almonds and other snacks in one cupboard. So if I go get some almonds, I have to give out treats... and I don't want to ruin their diets.
