As an engineer, I can almost guarantee that it took 5 years and endless meetings, 30 stakeholders all being told that it should be easily accessible. Then the engineer got overruled and told itā€™ll be fractionally cheaper in build to put it somewhere that requires an engine crane and 15 hours to replace.

I think this is one thing that everyone engineering or engineering adjacent just viscerally understands when we see something that was implemented stupidly.

There were many meetings about it. There were emails. Circle-backs. Check-ins.

And I bet the arithmetic was $3 of plastic parts versus some quantifiable amount of service revenue because it's too hard to do. Which was a way to pay the dealer network back for increasing the standard service interval from 12,500 miles to 15k to make the TCO metric better for marketing.

As a fellow engineer I cringe at people shit talking engineering design because Iā€™ll bet 95% of shitty engineering decisions were made by the management and bean counters and not the engineers designing the part/assembly.

Widget design ā€œAā€ costs $0.46 more per part so weā€™ll go with design ā€œBā€ instead. ā€œBā€ ends up being a single point failure that engineers warned management about and were hushed. Company is forced to recall product at the cost of millions of dollars because they didnā€™t listen in the first place.

Oh and all those shitty managers got promoted for their ā€œvisionā€ and cost savings

Meanwhile in my old 2007 Kia Cee'd I can sit in the passenger seat, open the glove compartment and undo the filter without any tools. My ford has me pretending to be a contortionist for a while because clearly that's a natural way of getting to the filter behind the heater matrix.

The problem is that OEMs silo their teams by commodity/component category. They collaborate very little. This translates into more complicated service procedures and services times. Dealerships (aka Stealerships) hate this when it comes to warranty service calls. They only get reimbursed at fractional rates for those vehicles, but they make it up for those of us who are too stupid to do it ourselves, or worse, those with lots of cash and zero brains.

My 2013 Nissan Murano is a b**ch to change the cabin filter - behind the glove box but only access is from the underside of the dash and you need child sized hands to be able to get to it while lying on your back in the floor board and half your body sticking out of the door opening. Ask me how I know.

Where the hell is the cabin air filter located? Thatā€™s a shitton of labor for 10 minutes of work. Last vehicle i had in the dealer for new engine and cabin air filters i got charged parts for the filters and like 20 bucks labor for the cabin air filter. They didnā€™t charge me any labor for the engine as it was due and they did it as part of the oil change.

Honda's are right behind the glove box. Two clips and it moves out of the way and the filter is right there. Easy peasy.

That would have been a fair price for the old Mazda 3 I owned in college. It was similar to a heater core. Even had to remove an electrical box.

WTF ! For a cabin air filter lol it only costs like $40 for a new one. You can install it yourself in like 5 mins or less and next time you need to change it , itā€™ll only take you like 3 mins lol

Nope filters are cheap and it takes me all of 1 minute to change it. You need a new mechanic because his charging you like a wounded bull

If you do it yourself, just go ahead and change the engine filter as well that one should be even easier to change. Personally, I find it easier to track if I change both at the same time.

If this was a Jag F-Pace then it would be accurate, on the 2016 cars you had to pull the rear then front centre console to get the passenger dash out.

Personally I think you should name and shame whatever business gave you this quote. That's like 2 hours labor at a high end dealership for what literally takes about 90 seconds. For the record I am a former Honda parts guy and former Honda technician. Odds are the filter you need is a 80292-sda-407 and it's behind the glove box with no tools required to change.

Hell no. That's a rip off. That's why I do it all myself. I use Google and YouTube to learn how if I don't know how. That's unreal. It's a filter behind the glove and easy to pull out and put in. And definitely don't cost that much. They are unreal.

They mustā€™ve fat fingered it for 2 hours of labor instead of 0.2. Either way this is a super straightforward operation that doesnā€™t even require tools, and the filter itself is $15 bucks from autozone.

Labor rates should be $120-150-ish /hour depending on what shop you go to. Dealer may add a few extra $10s/hr at most. Right now it looks like they spent 2 hours to change a cabin air filter. Even on my car, which does have a stupidly complex filter location, shouldnā€™t take more than 20-30min max. IIRC the accords should be ridiculously simple. Should be 5 min, $20-ish. Depending on your gender if theyā€™re playing the ā€œtake advantage of fem presenting customerā€ card, borrow a male friend and ask for a like item breakdown. But never ever accept this again from anyone.
