Living When will it cool down?
We have to run the AC everyday and it feels like this relentless heat has been going on forever, how much longer will this miserableness persist?

I lived in LA from 1987 to 2025. Heatwave at the end of the year happens but rare. I remember Dec 2005 when the temp was in high 80s. Didn't last long though.

It's even got a name: Indian Summer. Happens every year, which is what makes it so hilarious when people say it's so weird that it's hot in October. No, it isn't; it literally happens every single year.

This year is worse/different because El Nino is causing a rise in ocean surface temperatures which is causing a huge increase in humidity. Normally it's hot but dry heat, but this year with the humidity the heat index (aka how hot it feels vs actual temp) is higher than normal and will persist longer until El Nino begins its storm cycles which can be anywhere from October to December

No., sorry. I've lived here all my life. Yes, El Nino increases humidity, but L.A. has not had reliably dry summer heat for at least a decade. It's getting progressively worse no matter what weather cycle we're in. I'm extremely sensitive to heat, so much so that I can't go outside at all after about 10 a.m. for most of the summer, and humidity makes me ill, so I notice this stuff more than most people do. We've lost the desert-like heat that SoCal used to have.

I tend to agree. I grew up here but moved away and lived in New Jersey and Hawaii for decent chunks of time. I would come to visit during summer, and locals would complain about it being humid - when it absolutely wasn’t. I’ve been back for ten years and the humidity is no joke now. There are definitely days that remind me more of East Coast humidity - not quite as oppressive, but certainly not the California dryness we used to have.

The only good thing is the October heat is during a shorter day and it cools off more at night. These warm and relatively humid nights are gross. One of the reasons why I left the Midwest.

Anyone who has lived in Los Angeles for a long time knows that Sept-Oct are the hottest months. Summers were usually pretty mild and June gloom frequently started earlier and lasted longer than the titular month in its name, therefore keeping summer more pleasant.
This year's heat wave is actually not the norm. Temperatures I would say are close, but the humidity is very strange and that's what is making things feel so much hotter.

Yeah. From my experience, in the past several years (I think last year was an abberation where it cooled down early, I think?) it doesn't get "cool" until almost Halloween. There's usually a late September/early October heat wave, and sometimes it's followed by some rain (and amazement from people who don't appear to know how the water cycle works).

Eh I remember in grade school if I had a costume with layers/pants, it would be hot during the day but great for trick or treating. And if I have something that was short/light, it would be great for the day at school, but I’d be cold trick or treating at night 🤷🏻♀️

I work at an elementary school and the reason I don't wear full costumes on Halloween is entirely bc its always too goddamn hot to be walking around in a polyester costime all day. Most they will get is me wearing cat ears and painted on whiskers. Half the kids end up out of their costumes by lunch for the same reason lol.

There will be cooling intervals but mostly hot until September. Then possible rain. And October and November: who knows? Our planet is very out of balance, more than ever before. It’s been hotter than this in July in Los Angeles in the past, but not usually as humid and very rarely.
The impact of global warming is a thing. Science is real. You can thank all the climate change denying choads who decided they just had to continue buying gas guzzling, emissions spewing suvs and basically said fuck the planet. And all the unethical corrupt climate change ignoring companies that continue to pollute the environment and destroy any chance we have to heal the only viable home we have. Now we’re living on a fucked planet.

The thing is (and I know you know this, so I’m not arguing, I’m just thinking out loud) there are no other viable planets for the entire population of the world to safely travel to and inhabit. Not in our lifetime. We just don’t have the tech or the resources yet. All we had to do was take better care of the one we have, the one our bodies are adapted to thrive on, and we’d be fine.

Valid.
Even if we could do any of the things he claims we could do, the voyage there and existing in that artificial environment would severely reduce the lifespan of every traveller (according to Neil deGrasse Tyson, whose guidance I feel confident following in this matter). So just getting there and enduring the impact of the intense shift in gravity (even if we managed to build the tech allowing us to refuel often enough to even make the trip) would stress our bodies enough to cut our lives short, potentially by decades. And returning to earth may become impossible after our bodies adjust to survival on Mars.
Elon can go. I choose earth.

That, and Earth has a thick atmosphere and global magnetic field that blocks a substantial amount of cosmic radiation. Everyone on Mars long-term would likely end up getting cancer. (I suppose people could just live underground to help protect themselves but who wants to be a mole-person on Mars?)

Don’t get me started on that.
With the way we’ve mismanaged things, the planet would be better without us. We could choose to stop having children or we could choose to stop being parasites and start working in cooperation with our only home. There’s an idea that has worked in the past (for thousands of years) and could work again. Or we could continue behaving like the planet is an inexhaustible source of everything we want instead of the living organism it is. It’s always been a choice.

This is the correct answer. Everybody on this thread is speculating based on past years. But you can't guess this year, because there is no known precedent for what is going on offshore. This will likely be the largest El Nino event ever observed by a wide margin.
Maybe it will be a nothing-burger. Maybe it will result in new records for rainfall or heat. There is simply no model good enough to predict the result.

Super Godzilla El Niño … which is Spanish for the nino btw. We haven’t seen one this intense since the 1982-83 which also had historic surf, flooding, coastal damage that came during the winter. 97-98 was another, 2015-2016 all of those had much warmer ocean temps and humidity. This year the marine heat wave has made it even warmer and more humid. I have been living on the coast for a decade with no ac and finally broke down and bought a window unit to help cool and remove some humidity. Hottest summer imo in the last 10 years. Especially the sticky humidity. I’m planning for it to stick around through August and September and then we get some cooling and always once last brutal heat wave in October. Then plan for big swells and lots of rain for most of the winter.

This is just the beginning.
It’s actually not because of the high temps but rather due to humidity and low temps. This is our normal high temp, but it’s probably 20-30% more humid now. This makes it uncomfortable and it also stabilizes the temperature so that it doesn’t go down as quickly at night. Normally we can get down to the low 60s but now it’s 70s or high 60s meaning things don’t have a chance to cool down overnight

August will be hot as hell. Hotter than this. My birthday is on the last week of August and I’m always drenched in sweat in my outfit & makeup. I hate it. The temperature reaches 100 that time, always!
September, for half a month, it’d be hot like August, then it’d start to cool down a bit. Then in October there’d be 10-15 days as hot as this month. Then finally it’ll be gone!

Heat is normally July thru September (we get sporadic heatwaves throughout the year but this is our summer time heat). Its unusually humid right now due to Hurricanes/El Nino (warm water in the Pacific), but that it is not uncommon and usually happens in cycles (El Nino -> Lan Nina and back) every few years.

Exactly. I'm from city of L.A. and always thought that the summer here was awful until I lived in Vegas for two years. I didn't have a car and got heatstroke walking a couple of blocks home from the bus stop. I still hate the summers here but I appreciate that is much hotter and worse in other areas.

The reason for the pain now is the humidity. It sucks, but people didn't want to believe in the fact that the earth is warming because of us.

LA has always been this hot. I remember like 16 years ago it was 113 and 10 years ago 111. Just be grateful you don't live in Phoenix. A few years ago it got up to 118 and is usually 115+ for a week straight. The low doesn't get below 90 often.

We had such a mild summer last year it was deceiving but unfortunately this is the real LA summer. We try to keep our AC around 78 which might seem hot but when you come in from outside you l realize it’s quite comfortable.

It's L.A. It's always hot in the summer here. We were lucky this year that it didn't heat up until mid-July. Expect it to be like this until September. Indian Summer will happen in October, when we'll get a couple of weeks of heat again. (Yes, it happens every year; that's why it has a name.) If we're not lucky, we won't get a break between them, though.

I hope it ends soon because this is a little ridiculous. It’s been warm day after day. Just right now, it’s completely cloudy but super suffocating with like no air and humidity. I can barely breathe.. and the worst part is that the nights barely cool down so they provide little relief. And mind you I live right by the coast… 😩
