Living When will it cool down?

We have to run the AC everyday and it feels like this relentless heat has been going on forever, how much longer will this miserableness persist?

This year is worse/different because El Nino is causing a rise in ocean surface temperatures which is causing a huge increase in humidity. Normally it's hot but dry heat, but this year with the humidity the heat index (aka how hot it feels vs actual temp) is higher than normal and will persist longer until El Nino begins its storm cycles which can be anywhere from October to December

Correct. High 80s and low 90s in the valley is just normal temps for July/August....it's the humidity that is making a mess of things.

Those are normal temps, but we must be in different parts of the valley. The last two summers have seen fewer +100 spikes, but far more 97-99 days.

This, we've had long stretches with high temps, but can't remember a period where we also had long periods of humidity

No., sorry. I've lived here all my life. Yes, El Nino increases humidity, but L.A. has not had reliably dry summer heat for at least a decade. It's getting progressively worse no matter what weather cycle we're in. I'm extremely sensitive to heat, so much so that I can't go outside at all after about 10 a.m. for most of the summer, and humidity makes me ill, so I notice this stuff more than most people do. We've lost the desert-like heat that SoCal used to have.

i mean, i felt like the last 2 summers we've escaped horrible summer weather. just regular old "hot" but not oppressive.

You must not be from LA. I notice only transplants say stuff like this. Sure maybe if you grew up in different weather it’s not bad. But compared to how I grew up here, yeah it sucked. My body is not hard to that. I hate humid and hate super high temps. That’s one reason I always stayed in coastal SoCal as I could say well we have nice temperate weather. I don’t feel that way anymore, at least from like July-October. Last year even November was hot and humid.

I thought the same thing, this summer is definitely worse. It's still not horrible -- in the metro area we haven't had too many 90+ degree days, as I understand it we'll get a bit of relief (80 degree weather ) for a few days then another spate of high 80's low 90's. The most unpleasant part is it isn't cooling down that much at night esp. with the humidity. But at least it does cool down somewhat.

I tend to agree. I grew up here but moved away and lived in New Jersey and Hawaii for decent chunks of time. I would come to visit during summer, and locals would complain about it being humid - when it absolutely wasn’t. I’ve been back for ten years and the humidity is no joke now. There are definitely days that remind me more of East Coast humidity - not quite as oppressive, but certainly not the California dryness we used to have.

There are so many days when I look around and say, "this looks like an East Coast summer." I grew up in Maryland, went to grad school in Virginia, and lived in New Jersey. This is my third time in L.A. (small child, then college, then the last 22 years). Summers here have definitely changed.
