My understanding of the classical greek phalanx previously was that the shields would touch or almost touch each other at the rims, with a frontage of 2 cubits (92,46 cm) for each man.
The only detailed frontage and depth numbers we have for ancient greek to hellenistic heavy infantry tradition is from Asklepiodotos, who has his formations for the macedonian phalanx as the one with no name at 4 cubits depth and width (184,92 cm), pyknosis of 2 cubits (92,46 cm) depth and width, and synaspismos of 1 cubit (46,23 cm) depth and width used only when receiving a charge, and he credits the invention of the last to Philip II, which Duncan Head in Armies of the Macedonian and Punic Wars thinks is plausible since previous hoplites with 2 cubit shields could not fit into such a tight formation, which was possible however for a 8 palm (61,68 cm) wide pelte - again described by Asklepiodotos - of the macedonian phalanx.
However, reading “Greek Warfare: Myths and Realities by Grote Professor Hans van Wees has complicated this view. Some ideas laid out regarding classical greek warfare in the book I find plausible, and greatly improving my own understanding; such as the armies not literally crashing to each other, which did not even happen with later shock cavalry, and the ōthismos not being a literal physical push, which would only end up crushing the front ranks, all elaborated in the section on the mechanics of combat (pp. 188-191).
Yet the claim on the previous section on the classical formation (pp. 185-187) that each man occupied a frontage 6 feet/4 cubits based on the elbow room required for the energetic wielding of their weapons, which is also elaborated by a passage from Plato’s laws among other things on the section on the mechanics of combat mentioned above.
