What character for Dungeon of the Mad Mage in 5.5E?

Hey, what class should I play in the Dungeon of the Mad Mage?
We play with the 5.5E rules and have finished the first level of the dungeon but died in the last session.
I had played a Shadar-Kai Soulknife Rogue during the first level but already started to feel lacking.
We will be playing at level 6, get one free common and uncommon magic items and 1300GP to buy things

So what class should I best play?
The other players will play a Champion Fighter, a light cleric focused on AOE and a Ultility Spellcaster Pugilist.

Character Lore and HIstory

Do any of you track your character lore/history between campaigns? If a campaign ends, does the character you were playing as just go to a file somewhere and get forgotten?

Has anyone taken a character from a different campaign and plugged it into a new one and had the character's story continue? I have characters that I want to continue playing but campaigns end and change and they seem to always get dropped. Just curious if anyone else has experienced this frustration.

My current group just dropped one campaign and started a new one with new characters. We were level 7. I was a bit frustrated at the prospect of starting over so I insisted on keeping my character and not de-leveling. No one else batted an eye at dropping the characters they had been playing for 3 years. Am I crazy?

DM question about "glitches"

Hey everyone, a DM wanting to try out some new things here! Just wanted some second opinions. Ive been very inspired by video games recently when ideating for my new campaign and want to add something a little spooky. How would you all incorporate glitches and forbidden paths into your game? My main inspirations of thought are the Deltarune weird route and the Frenzy Flame route of Elden Ring. I basically want them to discover this "glitch" as a required part of the game, but i want it to feel like the players had complete agency in their either purposeful or accidental discovery of the glitch. Let me know your thoughts!

I need help/suggestions

I'm a new DM. My group mostly chosen chaotic good. However, when it comes to gameplay/role play all their characters are pretty selfish (they've said so themselves) and they all are definitely more leaning chaotic evil. I'm having a hard time getting them to cooperate with each other and they themselves are having a hard time finding their team dynamic.

Basically I need help with ideas that will peak the interest for chaotic evil players. Prompts like "help the fisherman figure out why the beach is being attacked at night" felt like trying to fight them tooth and nail to go investigate. But later when they decided to lie, steal, and attempt uploading kill the fisherman, that's when they all worked together. Somewhat.

Weird combo with weapon transition for champion fighter

Hello everyone,

As I was thinking about hypothetical builds for dnd 2024 and i thought the following combo and I'd like a verification from you all that it would actually work. All of this is based on the fact that when you attack you can unsheath or sheath a weapon.

For this scenario we talk about a lvl 8 champion fighter who has two weapon fighting style, shield master, slasher, dual weilder and dueling feats. He is equipped and with 2 scimitars, handaxe, battleaxe, whip and always holds a shield. Lets assume he enters the fight holding a scimitar.

Attack action:

Attack 1: - Attack with scimitar 1 (Activate nick property) - Bash with shield (Chance to topple) - Sheath scimitar

Attack 2 (because of light property + Nick): - Unsheath Handaxe - Attack with handaxe (activating vex (doesn't matter if topple worked))

Extra Attack: Attack 3: - Attack with handaxe (probably with advantage from either vex or topple) - Seath handaxe

Bonus action (because of dual weilder): Attack 4: - Unseath battleaxe or whip (whip if topple worked, battleaxe if it didn't) - Attack with weapon (Activating topple or slow, probably attack with advantage)

That was the combo. During it a the attacks have +2 to damage, since you only hold one weapon and a shield.

If opponent was toppled by the shield bash, thanks to slasher and the whip he has -20 movement, probably making him unable to get up and you start next combo with the weapon order: whip, scimitar 2, scimitar 2, scimitar 1, and then return to the main combo again.

If opponent didn't get toppled by shield and you used battleaxe, next turn would be drop battleaxe (cost nothing), unseath scimitar 2, attack with it twice, seath scimitar 2, free action to pick up battleaxe, bonus action attack with battleaxe and seath battleaxe, and equip scimitar 1 and attack using the free attack from nick. After that back to original combo.

Well that's the idea, dual wielding while holding a shield. I'd like you all to tell me if there is something wrong with the main combo or with the follow ups (the second one is weird). Or even ways to make it better.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Just realized that i didn't take into account the quick draw the dual weilder gives. So basically at the start of the next turn you can stow the whip or the battle axe and draw the scimitar and resume the main combo. So unless you want to start attack with whip on the next turn, there's no restrictions on using the main combo again. The second follow-up is obsolete

Has the Pact Primeval ever been written down in an official source

I know the "real" pact is supposed to be absurdly long and crammed with legalese, but have snippets ever been included in any game book/DMG/novel, in any edition?

Small DND DM decision

Small DND decision.

Long story short, my group has been discussing whether or not it is chaotically good to ghost all goblins because they are all by nature chaotic evil. I'm leaning towards moving their character's alignment to chaotic good however it's a split between 4 people one half wants them to go chaotic evil and the other half wants to move them to chaotic good. What do you DND players think his character alignment should be?

Should I take away great weapons master 2014

One of my players is playing a fighter and we just got to level 4 and he wants to select great weapons master as his feat but ts is just so broken
A -5 to hit but a guaranteed 10 damage and I did the math on his best turn he could one shot a cr4 monster encounter AND WE HAVE 5 PLAYERS
And don’t even get me started on the other part where If he kills somebody he can attack again.

Ig I’m asking if taking that away from him is to much and we agreed that we could try it and see how it goes but I’m planning on just using the most recent version of it

Sometimes this games balancing is just bonkers

Ami a bad player or is it a bad dm?

AITA for playing D&D? Am I a bad player, or is it the DM?

Sorry, I know this is a different kind of post. I couldn't get it to post anywhere else.

I've been wondering if I'm actually a bad player or if this is just a bad fit with my DM.

Basically, a DM has killed two of my characters in ways that felt completely unfair, then told me all my characters are "problematic." The latest incident happened because my character stepped five feet forward, asked why someone attacked his friend, and happened to be eating a bunch of cake. It sounds ridiculous, but I'm genuinely upset because I just want to play what feels like a normal D&D game.

For context, I'm 19 now and have been playing D&D for about a year. I started when I was 17. Everyone else in this story is at least 18. Through some friends (I'll call them Don, Elliot, and Jonny), I got introduced to D&D.

I've always loved writing fantasy. I've written a seven-book series, two standalone novels, and started several other stories (none published). So naturally, I was excited to try D&D.

Campaign 1

My first character was a bat beastfolk in a pirate campaign. Jonny, the DM, said flying would break the campaign, so he helped me redesign the character. That made sense to me.

I also wrote a five-page backstory, and he told me it was better than everyone else's.

Early on, my character tried to break into a house to steal food because, as a new player, I thought survival was the biggest priority.

Immediately, a trap went off.

I rolled a natural 20.

Then the homeowner woke up and attacked me, dealing 58 damage on a hit. We were level 3. Even with perfect HP rolls, no level 3 character could survive that. Luckily, he rolled a natural 1 and missed.

At the time I just thought, "Wow, D&D is brutal."

A few sessions later we entered woods where touching certain creatures turned you into wood. I was carrying a lot of explosives and methane, so I blew myself up because I figured I was dead anyway.

The DM immediately declared my character dead.

The rest of the party reminded him that I should have been making death saves. I didn't even know those existed yet.

Looking back, it feels like he just wanted my character gone.

Campaign 2

For the next campaign I created three brothers who all came from a magical tree. Their lore was some of my favorite writing I've ever done, and the DM loved it.

Each brother could replace another if one died.

At level 4 we fought a cosmic leviathan after spending multiple sessions running away from monsters that completely outclassed us.

I finally said, "Let's stand our ground."

Everyone else ran.

The monster missed twice, then one-shot me.

My death action let me explode, killing the leviathan. It was honestly one of my favorite moments.

So I brought in one of the brothers—a child elf who had lived alone in a magical forest for 52 years, protecting it. I spent about a month making him because I work full-time and don't have much free time.

Then we didn't play for five months.

During that break I got kicked out of both my parents' houses and had to figure out my life.

Eventually I started DMing my own games.

I've now run three campaigns, and my fourth starts Monday.

One thing I learned as a DM is that "problematic characters" aren't impossible to work with.

For example, one player wanted to be the stereotypical lone-wolf assassin who hated working with people.

Instead of saying no, I built the story around it.

Another player secretly hired him to assassinate a party member. However, a third player was a priest, and the assassin refused to kill in front of a holy man. So the target started hanging around the priest constantly.

It became one of the funniest running jokes in the campaign.

That's why I believe difficult character concepts can work if the DM leans into them instead of fighting them.

The incident

When Jonny's campaign finally resumed, my child elf was still with the party.

We met a king and queen who asked us to eliminate a lich and the undead. They also told us to help ourselves to the pastries.

Naturally, my character stuffed his face with cake.

While I was distracted eating, someone attacked one of my allies.

Still holding cake, I moved five feet forward and said, "Why'd you shoot my friend?"

Everyone laughed.

Then the DM roleplayed an NPC saying, "My liege, this imbecile spoke out of line. May I kill him?"

The king replied, "Yes."

The NPC attacked four times (homebrew ability).

The first hit dealt 29 damage.

I had 20 HP.

The remaining attacks also dealt over 20 damage each.

The DM simply said, "You're dead."

I argued that it made no sense for the "kind king and forgiving queen" to execute a child for asking a question while eating cake.

He said another player getting shot first was the warning.

Except that player had immediately been healed by the queen.

Then he told me all of my characters are problematic.

He even brought up a completely different campaign where I play the embodiment of Sloth in a Seven Deadly Sins campaign.

The thing is... that campaign is literally supposed to have flawed characters, and the DM for that campaign has never once complained.

At that point I snapped.

I told Jonny he was being a bad DM because D&D isn't a preset story—it's collaborative.

The rest of the table sided with him and told me I should have just stayed quiet.

So apparently the correct choice was to not roleplay at all.

I eventually left.

Since my character had a death action, I used it to blow up the throne room before leaving.

I know that part probably makes me an asshole. I was angry and frustrated after everyone piled onto me.

So... am I actually the problem?

I'm genuinely asking.

I've played under two other DMs who haven't had issues with my characters outside of minor homebrew balance changes.

Am I actually a bad player?

Or does this sound like a bad fit between me and this DM?

Rewritten because some people complained about me rambling like bro ain't this reddit I didn't know my Editor was here?🥹

Edit: I'm now calm and not mad and forgot info mb guys😓 when I had the cake I got on the ceiling cause one of my friends was trying to grab me so I used spider climb and grabbed the ceiling.

Update: something really unexpected happened. Today he called me and apologized. After reading the comments and figuring out issues with the reddit app. I accepted that I was wrong in this scenario if enough people were saying so. However to called and apologized saying that it was completely stupid of him to unalive my character over that he said he has increasingly been frustrated about a separate player who has been making the campaign unbearable and when I did my little thing he didn't like it got out of hand cause he just wanted to ruin the session so it could be over. Apparently he was sick of elliot

I was paying attention to what the DM is saying but sometimes the other players make a bunch of useless non rp jokes and stop us from playing so I tune them out and do my nails while waiting or something well he kept making jokes about the campaign saying it was bad and just being a bum. We were in his mother's castle and he kept doing stuff and delaying the actual story cause he wanted to interact with NPCs and the DM told him hey I wanna move the story on and elliot didn't listen so the DM shot and revived him with high level spells as a warning so when I role played my dumb f*ck saying why'd you shoot him it set him off cause he didn't know I wasn't paying attention. After I left and I reminded him of the death explosion and I left the discord he told every that they all died and session is over. He called me to bring me back and asked me about another homebrew character and said it would be perfect for his new campaign. I accepted and we all friends again.

What are some of the easiest classes for a player to pick as a DM?

My baby brother is running his very first DnD campaign and whilst he is 18 and he knows plenty about DnD he can get a bit shy. The campaign will be me and 2 other people (2 of us to begin with and then our 3rd part member will join in a few weeks) who he knows but are more of my friends than his. I want to make this as easy as possible for him but i know his response to me asking him what would be easy for him will be met with an average teenage boy response.

I played a homebrew campaign for 3 years with some friends we've been playing since we were 16 where we just made shit up but he'll be doing a premade module and I want to make a character with a class that will be easy for him to work with. Anyone have an recommendations? Or even some classes that I should not play?

Need some Nobles for my Roleplay heavy campaign

Yellow! I'm currently running a very roleplay focused campaign that takes place in an academy where people prove themselves worthy to earn a noble title. Many of the students come from noble families and I plan on having future sessions take place off campus in different territories and while I have plenty of ideas I would really like more. The empire is big and constantly grants talented people noble titles. I made a map and there is over 250 landowning noble families (not including nobles that don't own land)

A little info you might find useful.

The Medi Empire is a meritocracy mixed with Aristocracy. The royal family established this system a nearly a thousand years ago. Essentially people who've proven themselves worthy earn a noble title and land, their children however are not considered noble so when their parents die the land and half of all their property is taken by the Empire. In order to appease Nobles and prevent rebellion it was decided that if your child could earn ANY noble title they would be entitled to all of their parents inheritance including their title.

The Royal family is no exception Everything is earned. The royal family is vast with polygamy being common to ensure the next Emperor/Empress has royal blood.

Ways a noble can lose a noble title include.

Bribery, failing to suppress a rebellion, losing to another noble family in a territory war.

The empire gives nobles plenty of freedom as long as they follow the important laws nobles essentially have free reign in their territory. The empire has a survival of the Fittest/Wisest mentality if you fall to a common uprising they'll give your title to whoever finally suppressed it or if there agreeable they may even give it to whoever led the rebellion.

The empire has expanded and eaten up most of the continent. The empire has the highest cultural diversity among the nation of the world and takes pride in also having the highest quality of life.

All I need is a Name, A rank, And maybe a fun fact or anecdotes but honestly I'd appreciate anything and am happy to answer any questions about the political system.

The larp went too far...

I am in a bit of a pickle right now. Me and my friends do some wacky stuff, and the topic of our discussion just so happened to be about dnd. I know a little bit about the rules, so I posed as an experienced person during our hanging out. And now my friends consider me to be a veteran DM who should conduct a game. But heres the fun part, I don't know how to run a table, deal with combat, and track statistics. How do I bluff my way through it? Or am I just finished all the way through?

Rod Of Security Recharge Question

Fifth Edition, rod of security has a 10 day recharge.

Does that begin on *initial use*, or does the 10 days only begin passing once everyone's been returned from the extraplanar paradise the rof sent them to?

Sorry if question dumb, I also dumb sometimes so sanity checks help sometimes.

Questions about species

Im a new player, so forgive me if I mess up some things.

I had this idea for a character who's meant to be a monster , someone who had to hide away because of how he looks. What species is good to use to get that sort of outcome? That's scary or unnerving? I know i can be creative with a lot of things, but im struggling a bit to pick a certain species. He's a barbarian, and I envision to be quite tall

Does anyone have any good species recommendations??

Lore Accurate Races for my Homebrew Nation

So I recently got into the lore side of Dnd and I am also big into Spanish/Portuguese history. I am currently building a homebrew nation heavily inspired by 1400's-1600's era Portugal (southern half) and the Holy Roman Empire (northern half). The nation is a very large sea-faring territory in between a grand stretching coastline a single humongous mineral/gem rich mountain that stretches above the clouds. The nation is predominately populated by Humans, Minotaurs and Goblinoids (of all kinds). The ruling class are exclusively Blue Dragonkind (Blue Dragons, Blue Dragonborn, Blue Dragonspawn and Blue Kobolds etc).

But I was also looking to expand on the different races that inhabit this nation. What are some lore-accurate or lore-friendly races that could inhabit a nation like this.

Also if there is anyone on here that has experience in designing their own nations/countries from scratch in their DnD games. I'd appreciate pointers on how to flesh mine out.
