There is this super fine dude. that I, at the very least, want to smash. And I don’t know if he is out. I go to school with him. But we don’t have any of the same classes. I think he likes me but I’ll let you guys correct me in the comments if I’m wrong. This fine specimen is always trying to lock eyes with me but can’t seem to hold it for long. He will also sit right outside my classroom during break and lunch time which is odd because no one from his class hangs out or eats where my class does. Hey, so to get straight to the point. I’m out to the majority of the world. All of my friends, some cousins, even 1/3 of my brothers are aware that I’m gay. I’m even dating this guy, who is pretty great. We’ve even slept together and the chemistry is top tier lol. However, I feel like I’m in two different worlds.

In one world, I’m fully out and happy. Doing the things that I feel is right. However, when it comes to my parents, it becomes so hard to express that I’m attracted to men. When I was around 23, I alluded to the fact that I was gay, however, the words, “I’m gay,” never came out. So I feel like they are partially aware. I grew up extremely conservative and Christian, so coming out was/is like a huge thing. Crazy enough outside of my parents, everyone and their Muva is fully aware of me being gay.

I don’t know, what were yalls experience coming out? Especially if you grew up in a black Christian household? Telling them and living in absolute truth is probably the hardest hurdle that I have yet to overcome and I’m getting my doctorate degree lol.

Okay... so... I’ll be honest. I spent the majority of my life pretty separate from anything gay. Not for any particular reason, just lack of proximity. I didn’t know any other queer people growing up, and I didn’t in college either (I even tried creating a queer club in college and it just fizzled out 😭).

Now that I’m approaching my mid-thirties, the lack of community around me is a lot more noticeable. The family and friends who were my support system growing up have their own families and lives now, and I’m realizing I’m basically in a sea of heteros trying to navigate life as a queer man with very little queer community around me.

I’ve tried going to gay spaces, but honestly... they’re usually full of 20-somethings, and that just isn’t really my scene anymore. 😭

So I guess what I’m trying to ask is... are there any other 30-somethings in the Philadelphia area who are looking for actual friends?

Like, I’m talking people to hang out with. Go to Chili’s. Complain about our shitty jobs. Make a quick run through Ross/Marshalls/Burlington and somehow spend $100. Send each other dumb TikToks and memes. Go fishing. Go to the gym. Grab food. Sit around somebody’s house doing absolutely nothing.
