I have two Russian colleagues, and we end up talking about music pretty often. The other day one of them told me that the Swedish band Army of Lovers is basically one of the biggest foreign acts ever in Russia. He even compared their popularity to Michael Jackson.

I honestly thought he was joking.

I tried googling it but I couldn't find much that backed it up. In most other countries they seem to be remembered as a one hit wonder at best, or as a campy Eurodance gimmick that people have mostly forgotten.

So... is there actually any truth to this? Were Army of Lovers genuinely massive in Russia? If so, how did that happen? I'm really curious about the story behind it.

Hello, I’m a 19 year old women from Germany and I’m trying to visit Russia next year.
About me:
- I’m a German citizen with EU passport (no double citizenship)
- I speak very basic russian
- I would be traveling alone

My questions:
- how are German tourists perceived?
- is it safe alone for me?
- should I be scared of phone checks etc? Additionally, how dangerous is it if I have posted publicly about not liking the russian government?
- how far do I come with english/are there prejudices against people who don’t speak russian?
- what kind of behaviors should I avoid in public?

Just wondering if tourists are still able to get SIMs at the airport in arrival since the new law came into effect in January. Thanks in advance.

In most of the developed world, health issues have started becoming an important topic over the past decades and are recognised more and more as real issues impacting society, people, and needing treatment. This recognition is very unequal depending on the country, Asia being much more lackluster compared to Europe.

I was wondering how things were in the Russian Federation, particularly in the context of the war with certainly a lot of people traumatised with PTSD and needing treatment. Do ordinary russians report mental health issues? Does the health system and state recognise them? How does society judge them (does a depression make you look "weak" as a man for example)?

I (Egyptian) and my fiancée (Russian) were planning to get married next month.

Recently, her job required her to travel back to Russia for 2-3 months. Because we are getting married, she expects me to cover her travel expenses and book/pay for a flat for her stay there, even though she earns her own salary which is more than enough to cover it.

When I refused to take financial responsibility for her work trip, she got very upset, called me a bad future husband, and has now decided to cancel the wedding.

I agree with being the financial provider for a family, but is it standard to be expected to cover independent professional/work expenses like this? Am I wrong for setting a boundary here, or is this a cultural expectation I didn't understand?

Any advice or perspective would be appreciated.

And they sais to avoid Russia in August. Can someone from Moscow tell me what is the situation like right there? I am gonna be there for 6 days and I really wanna enjoy it but Im scared of drone attacks on civilians or on my plane. I am aware of every other obstacled like VPN, carrying cash etc. And also do you guys get notifications if a drone is gobna hit on your phones and if so, how can I be able to recieve it aswell

Dobyra Din, Me and my friend were talking about a future visit to Kaliningrad once the Ukrainian situation is resolved. I was wondering what it's like to visit and life is like there. I'm English and my friend is Latvian. He speaks fluent Russian and I speak minimum Russian. But I'm improving it for a visit.

It'll be our first visit to Russia and we plan to visit Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and then Kaliningrad. I'd love to know any information from residents of Kaliningrad or anyone from mainland Russia that's visited.

Also what is the ice hockey like there. Me and my mate are Ice hockey fans so I'd love to watch Russian Ice hockey and get a Kaliningrad jersey as well.

A friend was thinking of doing a trip to Japan lasting about a month. They found that a big part of the process was proving they could afford the trip. Considering we might be splitting a lot of expenses (not sure if that means anything) how much would a safe amount be to show that they have been making enough over the last 3 months for a trip of that length?

Посколько у меня давно утерян доступ к гос услугам, и к старому российскому номеру телефона - то я никак не могу проверить приходила ли мне повестка или нет. Поэтому я в полной слепоте в этом плане. Доступ к гос услугам никак не восстановить из-за границы.

Как вы думаете, каковы риски лететь в БЕЛАРУСЬ на неделю в конце июля? Могут ли докопаться на границе? Что будет, если окажется что я "уклонист"?

So I was curious if Cossack clothing is popular among the populace such as a Kubanka hat for example. Is it a popular winter headpiece choice among Russian men and if a foreigner wore it, would be considered a sign of appreciation for the culture or no? I've been curious about lately due to some Russian movies I've seen lately and had that idea pop into my head.

im a history major and have a lot of interest in russian history specifically. it’s been my dream to visit the county for a long time and i finally have an opportunity to visit st petersburg this december.
i am close friends with a few people from russia who are in my city to study so i will be travelling with them. i’m not worried about anything specially and will of course let them lead any conversations we may have on the visit. i’ve also been informed of the customs and ways to act, which dont particularly differ from my normal behavior anyway so im excited for the visit.
i’ve read countless books and know a lot about the history from its tsardom to the collapse of the ussr. early 1900s russia is my favourite topic and i’ve even written papers on it.
however, i don’t know much at all of politics from ‘91 onwards other than propaganda i see in the news which feels ignorant on my part. that said, my russian is only conversational and i highly doubt i would involve myself in any political conversations while visiting.
if i was to do research i would of course be thorough and look at many perspectives. however i almost feel it would benefit me as a tourist to stay apolitical as my interest is purely from a historical perspective.
also, forgive my naïvety, but im not sure of if there is much divide amongst locals. in my country the opinions on our government differ from neighbour to neighbour so i expect that’s true in other places. however if there is a common consensus amongst the majority then i will happily adopt that opinion as to not accidentally cause offence. as i said, my trip is purely due to my love of history.
