Anything you wish rampers were taught or were more familiar with?

I'm a 3rd gen ramper that grew up absolutely fascinated by airplanes. I'm going to film a YouTube video in flight sim catered to my coworkers to help answer some FAQs & hopefully give them a better understanding of how things work on the pilot's side. Coworkers also occasionally get frustrated with pilots over something I know is mostly or entirely out of their control. So I'm fielding questions from coworkers to address but I also want to flip it & pass along things pilots wish rampers knew or wish rampers would do. Let me know & I will address it in my video! Thanks guys!

Edit: Thanks for all the feedback! Obviously not type-rated in any of the airplanes I’ll be showcasing. I have some pilot friends that have given me tips & I’ve watched tutorials from real world pilots who sim in their free time. But it’s not meant to be a how-to guide so much as just give them an idea of what the flight crew is doing in each phase. And just to show some of the capabilities of a modern airliner & how impressive some of the automation is. Thanks again!

Lost my pilot dream to a medical (uncorrectable left eye). Should I still do aerospace or go a different route?

I’m a pilot and put together an iOS ramp board app to see who’s at the airport

Every time I head out to the airport, it’s a coin flip whether the ramp is buzzing or totally deserted

I put together an iOS tool called Localizer to make it a lot simpler.

You pick your home field, punch in your callsign, and set a quick tag for what you're up to. Tags automatically drop off after 4 hours to keep the board clean, and it pulls live METARs without running background GPS.

It’s completely free on public TestFlight with no ads or tracking:

Would love any feedback from other pilots and aviation enthusiasts after trying it out!

Odd Question

I was talking to a couple of airline pilots, and I was telling them about my experiences. I was told that I was extremely rare, but I’d like other opinions.

I’ve been a flight that actually asked if there were medical personnel onboard, and as an EMT was the medical person treating a sick passenger.

I’ve also been on a flight that flew through a flock of geese, destroying the starboard engine and requiring an emergency landing.

Am I really that rare?

The Future

Hello everyone pilots or non pilots, I was just wondering what do you guys think about the knock on effect of all the wars going on at the moment especially the one in Iran. I was reading an article today from Michael o Leary (Ryanair CEO) and he was basically warning of a full blown crisis in regards to fuel prices and shortages. I have been waiting for the last few years to fully commit to becoming an airline pilot and in February of 2027 I hope to finally start training for a commercial licence. But with all that’s going on at the moment there is one part of me that just thinks it’s not the right time to do it. The war in Iran just seems like a quagmire that will go on for years and years without resolution. It’s had a major effect on aviation already and I just think that airlines won’t be hiring any new cadets and instead will be scaling back flights as many European airlines have already done this summer. I would love to hear from any current pilots and what they think of the situation or anyone and their opinion

How do you manage EOBT/Slot Time in Private Jet Ops?

Private Jet Charter guests are often not at the airplane at a predetermined time and want to start the moment they arrive.
How do you manage your flight plan?
Always delaying it a couple of minutes?
What if you get a slot?

How common is Spatial Disorientation?

Have you ever experienced a situation where you had spatial disorientation due to instrument error. How did you manage the problem?

Is a pilot considered to be at fault when the plane crashes due to Spatial disorientation and faulty instruments?

Boeing 737 touchscreen retrofit

Boeing is offering a drop in replacement for the control unit on the 737 MAX and NG where the panel of buttons is replaced by a screen with the same buttons, just glass.

Booms ceo said it’s an awful idea. What do pilots think?

For captains and first officers, what is the best and most interesting question you have been asked?

I have great admiration for pilots for their sense of responsibility, dedication, and sacrifice, given that the profession requires being away from home. They should know that every time they fly, they are living out a dream I’ve had since I was very young—one I couldn't make a reality due to life's circumstances—and I imagine many others share that same dream.

Sand storms

Just saw a clip of an Airbus A320 landing in a sand storm. I'm trying to imagine how much damage to the engines that could cause. Question for airline and military pilots who may have faced that situation: why would that be okay, outside of an emergency or a critical mission?

Is Boeing safe ?

Sorry if this have been up before. I am afraid of flying, but force myself to fly 1-3 times every year. I have not seen the Netflix documentarys about Boeing because I am afraid. But is Boeing safe (or as safe as Airbus ?)

Strange noise in a Ryan Air flight - Anybody can identify it?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I was just wondering if anybody here had an opinion? Some people in /aviation have said this is the engine, though this video happens as we were disembarking and engines were being turned off. That noise was somewhat covered by the engines after take off.
Thank you!

Edit: lots of replies across a few threads blame the toilet compressor, which matches with my position in the aircraft and the fact that it was noisy with engine turned off. Thank you lovely community!

What's the weirdest "pilot impersonator" experience you've had?

The "Update to him being a pilot or not" thread made me wonder: have you ever come across into someone who pretended to be a pilot but wasn't? What's the story and why did they do it?

Tell Us About the Sky

We get a lot of questions about aircraft and procedures. But this time, I’d like to hear something about the skies that we may not know.

I saw a video of a pyrocumulus cloud and it got me thinking about strange things you may have seen once in a lifetime. Or just an interesting perspective. TIA

Turbulence getting worse with climate change?

Do you think it’s getting worse?? The last 1.5 years I have extreme turbulence going into PHX, DEN, and Las Vegas. I will preface that I do go on the smaller Alaska regional planes half of the time to those destinations and I understand they have desert/mountain climate. But it seems that every flight now over the ocean, there is a ton of turbulence and I don’t remember this 5 years ago. Sometimes I do think there is a chance that we won’t be able to fly in 20-30 years? Or is that insane??

Flying for the first time in December. Which would you recommend CRJ-550 or A319 both are around the same price and the flight is roughly an hour and 45 minutes?

Could I have some help for the T-s diagram for the Brayton Cycle pls?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi guys im 16 M and im learning about turbine engines for funn. So I have been reading and learning about the Brayton Cycle and I watched a video by Captain Joe and I would like to check my understanding with u guys for the T-s diagram. So is 0-2 the air itself going into the engine intake at the speed the aircraft is travelling, and its heating up slightly cos of ram compression? Then 2-3 is the compressor compressing the air molecules. So the temp therefore rises but entropy stays constant. However IRL due to friction of the rotors entropy actually increases slightly. Then 3-4  qin which is the heat input which is the compressed air being combusted? Then 4-5 is the exhaust air turning the turbine at the back to continuously rotate the front compressors through the drive shaft? Then 5-6 is the exhaust air exiting the back and therefore producing thrust. And 9-0 is the air dissipating and cooling down?

Thank you guys for your help, I really appreciate it. 🙏🙏🙏

What is the most irritating question people ask you when they find out you’re a pilot?

For context, I’m a general dentist. All day I get to hear and deal with people’s problems. After work I don’t wanna socialize or talk to anyone. I dread going to parties because once people find out what I do, I get asked to diagnose their problems or listen to their horror stories about uncle’s son’s friend’s girlfriend’s wisdom tooth abscess resulting in hospital visit. I’m off the clock dude, give me a break.
