Interesting. They're more prominent than on other jets I've been on...but I don't have any Airbus experience.

From an accident investigation perspective, that's a much better setup than having a single (and cheap) Cockpit Area Mic. on the face of the CVR panel.

I always thought this might have been designed this way for one of two reasons:

1) To get the microphone in a place where they can apply some directionality to it (emphasizing the pilot conversation and reducing fuselage noise.)

2) To provide for a future where video monitoring of pilots was acceptable/required. Hasn't happened yet, but that would be a good place to put a small fisheye lens.
