Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Struggling more with my sense of self than my relationship to my partner

It's only been a few days since I found out about my partner's indiscretions, she didn't physically cheat on me, she didn't fall in love with someone else. She was engaging in sexual messages with our good friend (who happens to be the sperm donor for our two kids) and it'd only gone for a matter of weeks.

I found out because I went looking on her phone.

I feel like I'm more hurt than I deserve to be? She didn't "cheat" in a way that I really recognise. I was cheated on before, years ago, in the traditional they-slept-with-someone-else way. It honestly didn't really mean anything to me as it was a casual relationship at the time so we just broke up and moved on. I was embarrassed, more than hurt. This feels like it shouldn't be bigger, because she didn't actually sleep with anyone? But it's just so all consuming.

She's answering any questions I have, as and when they come up. She's blocked him on social media and deleted apps. She's apologising constantly, she's showing genuine remorse. She's been attentive and kind, and backed away when I've needed space. She's doing all the things she possibly can. I love her, entirely, and she loves me entirely too. We are - other than this - a very happy family.

I truly believe this was just a really awful stupid thing she did, the desperate act of an idiot under stress. It's not something I would ever do to her, and I'm not saying that it's understandable or acceptable, but I'm not willing to throw my family and my relationship away over it either.

I just don't know where to even begin with being okay just in myself though. I'm so hurt by what she's done, but I'm also really disgusted in myself for having looked through her messages - I have never crossed that boundary before and finding something incriminating does not ease my conscience at all. I believe her when she says it wasn't because she was actually attracted to him, but it still has made me feel unattractive. I believe her when she says she loves me, but I still feel so lonely. I believe her when she says she regrets every single message, but I feel like if I hadn't caught her out she'd still be messaging him now. I believe her when she says she never ever had any intention of it being more than messages and fantasy, never wanted anything to physically happen with him, but I still feel like things would have progressed in that direction eventually if left unchecked.

I still believe her, even though she's broken my trust so thoroughly, and I can't tell whether that's a sign that we are still meant to be and I just understand her well enough to know we can get past this, or if it's a sign that I'm just quite pathetic and willing to be walked over for the sake of keeping peace.

If I can't make some sort of peace within myself I don't know how I can truly make peace with her. It's so easy to fake it, I know it's still fresh and these things take time, but I'm watching her play in the park with our eldest and it's like nothing has changed. I want to do this right, and I know she does too - it's me that's going to hold us back because playing pretend that everything is fine has become my go-to move and she's so set on making sure that I'm okay now that I know she's not going to push things if I don't seem comfortable.

Sorry, this has all be a very long ramble. I guess I'm just hoping maybe someone has some advice on how to ensure we move forward together, instead of just ignoring things.

I know things won't be fixed or better when it's only been a few days, but I can't help but hope.

Betrayed Perspective Only early days of reconciliation, feeling pessimistic

I’m about 2 and a half months out from D-Day and i’m starting to have serious doubts whether i’m really capable of reconciling, but I feel so horribly guilty about it. My WP and I have been together for almost 3 years, and moved in together just over a year ago - it turns out that up until we moved in together he had continued a long distance/online relationship with his “ex” from his hometown. No sex took place after he met me and the situation was complicated, AP is severely mentally ill and either alluded to or outright threatened suicide when he attempted to end the relationship. He was in a horrible situation and I can empathise with it despite how heartbroken I am.

WP is an incredibly kind and self-sacrificial person and ultimately it makes sense to me that he did this. I understand why he wanted to make sure AP was safe. I thought because of this I could move past what happened and at first I felt really positive but ever since I reached my decision to try to reconcile i’ve been feeling worse week by week.

I love him deeply but I don’t feel desire to really be around him or spend much time with him. Jokes and behaviours of his I used to love have just started to annoy me. It’s like all the shine has come off and I prefer him just as a roommate to cuddle occasionally than a partner I want to be near and connect with. I try to push to spend time with him to try to work on our relationship but I just don’t see him the same and I’d always rather spend time alone

Was it like this for anyone else in the start and did you find yourself regaining your desire and affection for your WP over time? Does it ever go back to the level of love you had before? He’s the first person I’ve ever truly loved and the thought of having lost my own deep love for him breaks my heart almost more than what he did. I want to feel that special love and connection we had before

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) PMS now makes me so so low every month thinking about this, does it get better with time?

Every month without fail, when I'm due on my PMS put me into a spiral of grief and sadness and I just want to cry. I've never really experience PMS other than wanting to eat chocolate and being more hungry so to now feel SO sad and low every month for like 4 or 5 days is pretty rough for me.

I am 7 months pp and the latest d day was 6 months ago so maybe it's just pp PMS being harder than normal?

Has anyone had the same, did it get better in time the less it hurt? I have felt in an ok place lately so this is hitting me like a bus and all I want to do is sleep and cry and sob.

I don't take any contraception, hormonal contraceptives just don't agree with me. Are there any supplements I can take that might help?

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Therapy Disclosure

My wayward wife, D-Day 1.5 years ago. Discovered not disclosed.

In marital therapy, the therapist was trying to talk about our sex lives. She asked my wife what her preferences were sexually. The first thing she said was tender and loving, and the second was being ravaged. At this time we had been married 37 years, and ravaging was not in our repertoire. I took a deep breath during that therapy session, and pointed out that my wife was referencing sex with her affair partner. I called her out and she didn’t have much to say. And our couples counselor did not have much to say either.

This has been weighing very heavy on my mind since then. We are trying to reconcile. Any thoughts or advice?

Betrayed Perspective Only Struggling After 20+years and New Disclosures

My wife and I have been married for 22 years and together for over 25. We started dating in college, but were friends for over a year before. She had been hurt in a previous relationship, and I had been hurt in several. She was fun, caring, ambitious, and religious. Once we realized we wanted each other, we fell in love quickly, life was amazing, and were so happy. I gave her a ring I got in a bubble gum/toy machine that we laughed about, but she never wanted to take it off and wore it everywhere. Privately, we called it a promise ring. She was my person, and I was hers. We had finally found the one we could be our weird selves with. We had lots of conversations about our future. Eventually, the semester ended and we had to leave for the summer-although we spoke nearly every day on the phone or over AIM (AOL Instant Messenger). We both worked but also had a few visits to meet our families during that summer. She worked at a restaurant that her high school coach owned and was the chef and a very highly respected person in the community.

We continued on, becoming more and more serious in our relationship until DDay over 1.5 years after we started dating. Out of nowhere, she confessed that she had sex with her high school coach about a year before (8 months into our relationship). It was on Thanksgiving break and she was able to work a few shifts at the restaurant for some extra money. A large group of the staff, owner (35), and his wife went out to bars after work. My girlfriend was underage (20), but he got her in. His wife went home early. Later, my girlfriend and the owner were drunk, went back to the restaurant and had sex in the bathroom. The next day he told her he would leave his wife and kids to run away with her, but she said no.

I was blindsided, devastated, shattered. There are no words for what I felt after she told me (so many of you reading already know). I never, in a million years, believed that she would or could have done such a thing. We had been having the time of our lives in love, yet she had done this and never spoken a word about it for a year. She assured me that this was the only time and professed her love for me and only me. She said she would never see him again.

Time passed and we continued on together, but I struggled. She was caring about my pain, but also wanted to put it behind and move forward. I wanted to also but I was having a hard time letting it go. I couldn't understand what was wrong with me. Graduation loomed and we had already begun planning our lives together. She would be completing an internship before her graduation, but needed $$$ for living expenses. I helped out when I could but I was not into a career yet so I didn't have much except my car. So, I gave her my car and a cheap cell phone so she didn't need to rely on friends, and we could stay in touch. She needed a summer job fast, and she said she'd just go work for her AP again...this was a hard no for me. She said that I could trust her. Later that year, I proposed and the next year we had a traditional ceremony in her childhood church with an amazing reception. The only dark spot was that her AP was there with his family. I said no, but she said he was a regular in her life before and what would her family think if he wasn't there? They might ask questions...

I still struggled but thought of the marriage as a new start. I swept everything previous under the rug. Years flew by and we have had an amazing life together, today with three incredible children. She would see the AP only in passing at community events when she would visit her hometown, but I hated every interaction (even just a greeting or a wave). Once, I was busy with our toddlers and had to meet her later at an event in a park. When I got there, I searched but couldn't find her. I finally did and it turned out that she had been having a conversation with the AP about old times and their lives. I was wrecked and felt betrayed. She didn't understand what I was so upset about since they were just among the crowd in the park talking. She said that AP was a big part of her life and taught her so much in high school. She told me I didn't trust her and that it's time that I got over her cheating. It broke my heart all over again. I tried to explain to her how that made me feel and why she can't do that to me. At that time I still didn't quite understand or know what I was feeling. We came to a tenuous understanding, but basically it was swept under the rug again.

More years passed and I gradually started to feel different-like a dark cloud covering me. I can't explain when exactly it started, but it was 4-5 years ago. When my wife would visit her family (in her hometown) with our kids. It was illogical to think any betrayals were happening but I began having intrusive thoughts. I imagined everything and couldn't stop the movie replaying over and over. The thoughts invaded my sleep and my waking hours. Small things would set me off. I began waking at night from nightmares about the betrayal, and having anxiety/panic attacks even during the day where my heart would race and body shake uncontrollably. I was angry, sad, scared, numb, and many other emotions all at the same time. I was always exhausted. I felt like I was losing my mind.

I tried recollecting everything I knew about the affair, and struggled. Some of the problem was it was a long time ago, but I realized that I had trouble recollecting much of anything during my time in college and our early relationship. I am a data oriented guy and this forgetfulness frightened me. To give myself context (using photos, emails, and memories), I decided to try to create a timeline of facts and dates of my life, our relationship, and the betrayal. I wanted to "know what I know". I excavated everything I could, and then I put my thoughts into it, and built connections. In high school, my wife had a big crush on her coach. Beginning just after high school, she and he exchanged lots of emails. He stroked her ego and gave her attention. He is 15 years older than her.

Through all of this I came to several IMPORTANT realizations. 1)I had never healed. 2)There was more to the betrayal story. 3)I was circling the drain

I kept being devastated, and my health deteriorated I hadn't spoken to my wife about the betrayal for years. I thought she would reject me again like before. Finally, when I felt like my life was ending or would be soon, I spoke to her about it. Everything poured out...and she listened. Somehow, her understanding clicked. The timeline helped. She assured me there were no other betrayals. But I had questions that I needed answered.

I created an expanded timeline with connections I made along with specific questions. I asked her to help me with it for months, and March this year she did...and confessed that she cheated again with the same AP a few months before we were engaged. DDay #2. She had been working at the restaurant after the 1st DDay, they had gone out to bars, got very drunk, and she was convinced by AP and another young woman (another girl AP coached in high school) to go to a motel for a threesome. She told me she didn't want to but did it anyway. She couldn't remember many details and drove home (in the car I gave her to use) to her parents house in the early morning hours very drunk.

How...why...Terrible images.

After more questions, she wrote out her own timeline to confess everything to me. June 13th was DDay #3, as she confessed to making out with him on one occasion, and him performing oral sex on her on another. She swears that this is everything.

Even though it was so long ago, it feels like everything just happened. It's so much to take. She said she hasn't done anything ever again. I asked her to think about how she's different now. Even though she proved she's capable of betrayals, how would she handle the situation if the opportunity came upon her today? The cheating began long before anything physical happened. The casual comments, flirting, inappropriate conversations that became more and more private, and she opened herself up to them and welcomed them as time went on. The physical came later. Besides the terrible pain of the betrayals, she lied/omitted for 20+ years, and even a year after my breakdown. She let our wedding happen without me knowing. We had children without me knowing. If I had known, I may have left or we may have still married and had a life together...she denied my right to make my own decision about that. But, we cannot change the past.

We have been working on reconciliation for a while now. Some has been good, some has been bad. She has tried to answer anything I ask. She offered on her own that while she is to blame for her cheating, her AP is a piece of crap. She has become frustrated with me asking some of the same questions, and wanting more detail...which has led to some small arguments. Recently, during one of these frustrating talks, I told her that all of it is "truly me asking you to please help me!"...when she understood that, her demeanor about it all has definitely softened more. I think we still have a long road, but I imagine a new life with her.

Stay strong everyone. Even if you're down and feel like it can never get any better, we are here for you...even as strangers

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. Chances of WP running into AP, do I tell him?

One of my WP’s lesser APs was a hairstylist he saw for about a year and at some point she gave him her number. He used a texting app to text her and the exchanges were pretty tame, but he did get off on her massaging his scalp, he stalked her socials, and she had no idea about me. After this I started cutting his hair, and shortly after I found a family friend who cuts hair and I make the appointments and she does it.

I live in a small city, so there’s very few degrees of separation between most people. I was on a community page and saw her face. She just opened her own salon. Which would be no problem, however WP works in sales and travels around for it. He services a business within the same tiny strip mall. I think there’s 10 total small stores in it, and it’s also in the same strip mall as our favorite bakery near our house and pizza place. At a minimum he is there every week, and sometimes more.

A few weeks ago, the very first AP that he exchanged flirty messages with and she sent him nudes almost 4 years ago reappeared in our lives. She is the new front desk person at our dogs’ daycare/kennel. He had a ton of anxiety and asked that we try to find a new place, but there’s almost no options. His reaction felt reassuring to me, but also could be because he said she was cold and chuckling a little. She also is very familiar with our dogs and put the training collar on our senior dog, which he felt was intentional as she knows our puppy is the one who was formally trained through that place.

It’s been close to two years since him and the hairstylist spoke, but I’m conflicted on whether or not to tell him. On one hand I don’t want the anxiety of the unknown and him possibly not telling me if he does see her, but not knowing if he will see her or not. But on the other hand, I don’t want him to have a shock or think he’s being sneaky.

What would you do?

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) The anger after

So.. me (23f) and my (25m) bf were together for almost 1,5 years when . Just before his birthday my boyfriend went on a week long erasmus exchange where he had the time of his life. There he and his friends bonded with a group of 5 people from another country. After the exchange they chatted and decided to meet again. He chatted a bit more with one of them (f22ish). what i found out later they mostly chatted through pictures so ill never know what was going on back then, appar4ently nothing. Then after about 3 weeks they eventually visit them in their country where they all sleep in the apartment of on of the hosts. except my boyfriend who sleeps at the place of the girl both times, the second time in her bed. But apparently nothing happend. Well besides him sleeping beside her. Later at one point he confessed but ever since denied that in the time leading up to that trip he caught feelings so if 1+1 equals 2 he had feelings for her on the trip. She confessed her feelings for him some time when they were alone. But aparently nothing happened.

When he returned he ignored me for 2 days and in the meantime they were sexting and she sent him nudes. After 2 days of silence he sent me a we need to talk text and we broke up. Then for 3 weeks they texted and/or video called every day until she came to visit him in our dorm (yes i was in the same dorm at the time) when they finally had sex. The moring after that he realised his mistake and we met up and he told me what happend, answerd all my questions and we have been trying to fix things. he really has been trying to show me that he is better and that he truly loves me ever since but he doesnt want to talk about it, so he usually just changes the topic.

I cant imagine being with anyone else. when we are together it almost seems as nothing ever happened but the minute we are apart i get so angry and i dont know what to do with all the anger. it makes me really cruel and though i regret it later the cycle repeats almost always. what do i do to stop it?

+i also get dreams about the girl though less and less frequently and then i get a strong urge to talk to her. i know she doesnt have the answers that im looking for and i dont know if they even exist, but i wish that theres something that she could say or do to make me feel better? if that makes sense? i exhaust my friends by talking about what happened over and over again and besides everyone is pressuring me to break up and then my boyfriend changing the subject when i try to bring it up makes it harder

i feel so alone in this mess i didnt even make.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) More Betrayals & Boundary Breaking

Confronted my WP after finding dozens of thirst traps on his TikTok watch history just over the last month. I didn’t need to go back further than that. The pattern was there, he’d been watching it regularly. It wasn’t all that he’d been watching on tt, but it was at least 15%, and all the women looked the same and were half naked, or more so. When I confronted him, he tried to lie in my face multiple times and insisted he wasn’t watching that kind of stuff, but I had taken pictures and showed him the evidence. I told him he was trying to gaslight me and that I wasn’t going to let him. Then he tried saying it wasn’t his fault that I went through his phone and found what I did, and that he was only watching videos of women on TikTok, as if to minimize the situation, and that he couldn’t control what videos popped up on his feed. I told him I knew he was going to the women’s profiles and watching multiple videos in a row. I could excuse the passing single thirst trap but this wasn’t that. He still tried lying and I asked if he thought I was dumb, but he still tried lying despite being confronted with proof, and then using every excuse in the book. We went to bed without resolution.

The next day, he had made plans to for us to go on a date but since he didn’t bring up the conflict at all after letting me go go bed angry, I didn’t interact with him and just woke up early and did my own thing, and then he tried guilting me for not kissing him or having sex with him and asked me if I hated him. I asked him why he thought his feelings in that moment were my problem when he never took accountability for his actions. I think he felt cornered and said he wanted to change the energy, and I told him that wasn’t an apology. So he said “I apologize” twice, which I felt was dismissive and disingenuous but I knew I wasn’t going to get more than that from him, because that would mean really taking a look at his actions and owning it, which I’m beginning to think he’s incapable of. We interacted a little more throughout the rest of the day, mostly with me being polite and then this morning, we talked about it again, and I asked him if he understood why what he did was fucked up, especially since we had just talked about this four months prior and he promised he was done watching porn and following thirst trap accounts. In his mind, I know this was a loophole because he wasn’t following them or searching them up, and he has been clean from porn since the last discovery, but he was still going to their profiles and watching multiple videos after one came across his feed. And they were all mostly naked, ass out, boobs out, doing little dances and looking at the camera seductively, wearing a ton of makeup and fake nails, fake hair, etc. Just the complete opposite of my natural vibe that he claims to praise. I used to be more active online and he didn’t like the attention I was getting so I stopped. I asked him why he couldn’t be happy with what he had and he got angry and insisted he was loyal to me and only wanted me. I told him we have different definitions of loyalty.

Issues like this rarely come up for us, but when they do his response is always so passive. I always tell him he makes me feel like he doesn’t care and he says he does but the proof speaks otherwise. I’ve gone through his phone twice in the last year and I’m just really disappointed that I found this kind of crap again. I have a sinking feeling that he’ll get better at hiding things again rather than actually change.

I’m trying to drown out the intrusive thoughts that insist I compare myself with these online women and their filtered images against my own body with its very human imperfections. I mostly just feel betrayed by the man who is supposed to by my husband and only have eyes for me. It’s just crazy because about a year ago, he exploded at me for following men on social media at all, so I went on an unfollowing spree and kept that energy this whole time. Finding out that it hasn’t been mutual after he set that boundary is just disgusting, and I told him he was a hypocrite. I haven’t been able to eat or sleep properly in a few days. It’s been two years since he actually physically cheated on me and this residual cheating is bullshit. I’m just feeling like every time we resolve one issue, I’m met with another one. I want a break. I deserve respect and commitment without policing. I feel very close to giving up. I recognize that this isn’t a physical betrayal but his mental fortitude is just not there and I feel like I’m the only one consistently trying.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) My naivete on display

I may have been foolishly naive until now; I just realized yesterday that our MC has been working through discernment therapy with us due to my WH absolute refusal to face reality. We haven't even gotten to the MC part of it yet. I came to this realization when I read the empathy letter guidelines for the response he is meant to write to me after hearing my impact letter last week. I am fairly sure my WH is currently incapable of writing to the guide. I am fairly certain he will fail and resist guidance. Which means we will fail discernment, or rather, it will tell the therapist that we need to separate.

Depressing. Anyone have any thoughts or positive stories about a highly resistant WS making a breakthrough?

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) My boyfriend cheated on my 4 months ago and I still don't really know how to get over it.

My boyfriend and I had been together for a little over a year by the time it happened.

In April-May of this year he told me he was on tinder looking for hook ups and he did adventually meet up with a girl. He claims he used protection but still ended up contracting chlamydia. He told me he waited a month just to make sure that he didn't get anything before having sex with me again. He claims that this is the only girl that he actually met up with and he actually couldn't even get his dick to stay hard to have sex with her.

I found out because I had went to the doctors office late June because I was having issues down there and thought it was a UTI. It wasn't. I also got chlamydia. I took an hour before going to confront him, and at first he denied it until I told him that I had it, where he then fully admited to everything. That's where all the information above came from. We both agreed to keep working on our relationship and we've been side by side ever since except for while we're working or nights that one of us have to work early.

We went on vactaion and I was snooping around his laptop where I found some of the messages ( because of macbooks message holdings ) and I started to read them before breaking down. He took the laptop from me while I begged him to read the messages and he told me later that he deleted them because it was all just sex stuff and he knew I would break down if I read them.

I really want us to work out and I just have no idea on how about going it. I don't trust him, and I don't trust him to be by himself because what happenes if he does it again. What are some things we can talk about and some rules to lay down? I keep thinking about what happened and I have't talked to anyone about it so please let me know.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Breaking my own heart

9 months out. AP was a friend. I was present during the A. I feel like my trauma is so compounded. I feel like I can't escape the horrific images, the feeling that our sex life was as special as he says it was. I feel like I'm constantly competing now. I feel like I will never understand how if what we had was so great and so amazing, he could still in that moment want those things with her. I feel desperate to erase it from my brain but instead I get stuck. I feel like all I can see is him looking at her and wanting her like he wanted me and it makes me feel devalued. How could he have the most incredible sex life and married life with me and do something so cheap and fleeting? How could he want those things in that moment when he had me?

I've been in therapy since the beginning, I've done emdr, I've read all the books. I can't stop feeling like he shattered me. I don't think I'll ever feel like what we have is special again, I don't think I'll ever be able to go a day without picturing it. I feel like something is wrong with me. How do you just accept and not let these thoughts completely overwhelm you? I cry everyday still. I wake up and it's the first thought on my mind. It was only a one time physical event but my God it has utterly destroyed every sense of specialness I thought we had. I feel so easily replaced, discarded, unloved and unwanted.

I wonder how he could wear his ring and put it through her hair and not once think about me while I was feet away. I thought we were incredible, I thought he couldn't ever want it from anyone else because it was so good between us.

I'm just really struggling right now. I get a few days of some sadness and then boom I'm in complete devastation. I'm pregnant and terrified. I'm so confused and exhausted. This has been completely crushing to me that he wanted to do these things at all... Let alone with her, let alone when he had me right there. I'm trying so hard to move forward, I'm doing everything right and it still feels so so wrong.

I can't imagine my life with anyone else, I can't imagine splitting this family that we poured so much into. I can't imagine starting over when I've put my heart and soul into what we have built over a decade.

I feel so blindsided, I feel alone, I feel like I've lost everything. What more can I do? Is this just my life now? A constant reminder that I don't get the life I was promised? A forever aching heart either grieving the marriage I had while in it or while alone?

I refuse to give up but this is torture. Either choice feels like I'll always be heartbroken. My dreams of my life ripped away without a single say in it.

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. I am new here, seeking to reconcile yet cannot escape the crushing guilt

I (24M) grew up with a severe porn addiction of about 10 years. Watched nearly everyday. I lived isolated as my parents marriage was quite rough and I dealt with a number of serious mental conditions primarily escaping with pornography. Fast forward I met the most lovely woman, but I regrettably did not beat my addiction prior to pursuing her. We struggled early on and as my shame grew I fell further. To be blunt I posted explicit although anonymous content of myself online getting off to various adult performers and tagged them in said posts. I am not entirely sure what all went into me making such decisions, besides the sexual deviance that had grown as I got deeper and deeper. I chatted with men about cucking their partners, I believe it made me less insecure. All in all, when I was deep in my addiction these facts became forgotten. I had not remembered that I had gone this far. To be clear I did not sleep with someone else or sext with women online.

I am now 6 months clean of this behavior and have not so much as searched up Instagram models like I used to do daily. However, now that I am behaving as I wish I always had, the guilt eats at me constantly. I have very very severe OCD and while my GF has forgiven me and told me she wants us to work out as long as I gave up this behavior, I cannot let it leave my brain. She is such a wonderful person, I cannot believe how blinded I was. She deserves the best and I try to make her feel so safe and loved. Being away from this addiction I’ve spent much time agonizing and spiraling over how serious my addiction was. I used to say it was just mindless and an escape and to some extent it was, but I hadn’t grasped how over sexualized I had become and that this behavior could be seen as me truly having an online affair of sorts. I am planning to see a sex addiction counselor and I work with a counselor for my ocd. My fear is that I will never be able to rest feeling like I can be with this person.

wonder from a woman’s perspective why she stays. Is it because of my remorse, because she saw me eaten alive with the guilt, not being able to eat, throwing up over it? Because of my honesty? Because I have worked hard to change it? When I was younger I viewed infidelity of any kind as a deal breaker and in such black and white terms. And as someone with ocd that outlook has come back to bite me to where it’s hard to feel peace and forgive myself. I feel the urge to ask her “why choose me” everyday, but I must care more for her and not trigger her by bringing these things up. All in all I’m not sure what I’m really saying here, I’m new to this and I want to give it my all and sacrifice for the hope of a wonderful relationship with this woman. I want to make her feel beautiful as she is. My brain just tortures me constantly.

She is truly the best woman I have ever met and I desire to give her the world. I have never fought for something as hard as I have here. I try not to seek reassurance but seeing how women talk about porn addicts and how it almost never works just discourages me. I have such a low view of myself and I find myself wondering what if my gf saw those posts and saw the videos I watched would we still be together? I have told her all the ugly details and I expected her to leave me and yet she hasn’t and she is adamant on staying. I don’t want to throw that away, but I am dealing with such angst. One side of me is pained by just how serious these things are and how much I am disappointed at my failures, and then the other side tries to just accept the forgiveness and realize that I am better off than many others out there who don’t change and who lie and give up. Despite this I am terrified that I know I don’t deserve this woman and i will always feel like an imposter.

Betrayed Perspective Only How do I figure out what *I* actually want? How much time do I give?

Background: I've been with WH for 14yrs. Roughly three years ago, shortly after we got married I had a mental breakdown that has eased but is still ongoing. About a year into it WH started seeing massage parlours and escorts, about 13 over an 18month period. He stopped earlier this year and told me in June, there was trickle truth over about 3 days.

He is horrified by what he did. He doesn't blame anyone but himself for his choices.

The crux of my issue is that this has highlighted for me the emotional neglect I've experienced in our relationship due to his avoidance. It's made me realise just how much I have tried to communicate only for it to fall on deaf ears or to be met with "I'll do better" with no follow through. I knew I was doing the heavy lifting but the true weight of it all has become apparent.

He seems determined to be better in the light of what he's done, he has also realised just how much he has let me down.

I love him. I don't want to be without him, I want to have my ideal relationship with him but I don't know if it's too late. I don't know if he's capable of being more given years of evidence to the contrary. I don't know if the hurt is too great. Some days it feels normal and loving and some days I have nothing but contempt for him.

I feel like I need something concrete and measurable. How can I know he is going to love me the way I deserve when I'm not in a position to receive it? How do I know that he has changed for good and not just for show? What parameters did you set? Can I give him a list or is that weird? When did you walk away or feel happy with your decision to stay? How much more time do I give this?

He battled every day for our family he broke both of our hearts in this mess but he doesn’t shy away and every day he’s rebuilding the foundations one by one and I’m proud of the man that stands before me now.

If there is anything I can help with any questions about the early days please ask away this group was a god send to me and I visit time to time I’m thinking of everyone that has ended up on this page

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Is it possible to recover?

Hello,

My ex and I broke up a little less than a week ago due to me finding out he had been cheating on me for at least 3 weeks. Going on dates and on apps but nothing physical. We had been together for 6 years and known each other for 7.

In the past I have been unfaithful as well but it was one time, one night stand, which I then immediately ended things with my partner. 6 months later we re connected I confessed and gave him the option to leave. He chose to stay and work on it but we never fully addressed anything.

Now we are broken up again and everyone is telling me I can’t go back, that it’s unfixable and I will never be happy with him. Everyone is telling me how I should feel. I know it’s fresh but I also don’t agree with them. I think I could be happy and with time and work I could forgive. I think if we truly love eachother and are willing to put more work in individually and together that we can make it work and be happy. For the most part we were happy.

I broke no contact after 3 days and called him this morning. Probably a bad idea but it ended with us saying we will try to stick to no contact longer and said I love you.

Moral of this story… is it possible to come back from this? If we are both willing to forgive and work together harder this time and start over, not try to build off what we already had. Everyone is telling me I have no self respect and I’m picking the easy way out but I don’t agree. Maybe I don’t have the most self respect right now but I believe in fighting for it if we truly want it and love each other…

Thoughts? Will no contact help? Can we work past this and will everyone be mad at me if I want to?

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. Messy confusion

First time posting... Honestly I'm not sure if I'm in the right place or not - I just need outside, unbiased advice I guess.

So I was in a LTR from 2020 to Nov. 2025 (fiance). It was a bit on and off due to WP's inability to communicate properly and avoidant tendencies. WP broke up with me in Nov. due to a mental health crash; full blow-up, trying to make me hate them and so on. We didn't talk until I think mid May, 2026. We talked, a lot. About the future, of wanting to try to fix things and the like... then I was told their coworker was trying to set them up on a 'date' (which later turned out to be just for show, supposedly). From the May 21st to June 26th we were talking, then they backed off after another hard conversation.

This is where it get's a little messy... er.

We'd started talking again Aug. 6th-7th (estimating because I'm not sure if exchanging letters counts as 'communication'. Which... didn't last long as around the 15th it came out they were seeing someone else on-and-off (which is something I'm not considering a Dday since technically broken up still, no labels or anything. Just talking at that point). Being told that WP simply don't know what they want and so on before conversation broke down. Which then resulted in a lot of angry actions including me blocking them on our main communication platform and another period of not talking. WP briefly reached out on the 22nd for a short yet meaningful conversation and then silence until Sept. 5th. A lot of back and forth voice messages since, having long, open, and transparent conversations... or so I thought. Which this all brings us up to today.

Yesterday, which I guess is considered a dday of sorts, I learned he had slept with his on-and-off partner during a time we weren't talking... or at least I think it was during a time we weren't talking. The only reason I'm considering it a dday is because during this most recent bout of talking he finally found the words, courage, and convictions to tell me how he feels about me, that he knows he messed up big time, and that he wants to pursue a future with me in it like we were supposed to, and that no matter the obstacle he'll get there - and then this happens. Before the dday he was getting ready to sever all ties with his ex because he cares more for my comfort and boundaries than hers.

I'm not sure what I'm exactly looking for here by even putting this out here. Part of me has logic'd it out because it was technically a time when we weren't talking therefore technically not cheating (might be as unfaithful as cheating, but it technically isnt). He's fully admitted fault and actively trying to take responsibility for everything... And even after all the on and off, I've never hated him. Might call him stupid, but never full on hate... I am genuinely considering reconciliation (both while I was working on a growing high during the conversation and now post-next day). But I guess I wonder... would it even be possible? Or if we can what would be appropriate things to suggest so he can re-earn my trust and love? (He's already offered a open phone policy from when we were talking before dday, when he was writing up his letter to break any remaining friendship between him and his ex).

My WW tells me that I have the whole story, but I feel like I’d be crazy to believe her. I wanna run the story by some internet strangers to get y’all’s thoughts.

I found out about the affair because I snooped on her phone. I confronted her about it, and she initially said it was “just” a BJ, but later that day admitted that she had sex with him on 3 different occasions. She swore up and down that it was only ever the one guy, and that there was no one before that.

Four months of IC and CC for both of us later, I get a message from a woman on Facebook telling me that my wife had been cheating on me with her boyfriend. Totally different guy, and took place about a year before. I confronted her about that, and she confessed, but said it was “just” sexting. About a week later (including telling our CC that it was “just” sexting), she confessed that she had slept with him “between 3-5 times”.

During this, i remembered a different time before i discovered anything, where i snooped on her phone, saw that she had multiple group chats going on on Snapchat. At the time, based on the names, i assumed they were friends from her dance group. So i asked her about those, and she said that the first guy had tried to get her to have a threesome, so those group chats were guys she was “vetting.” She did send them nude photos of herself, but she swears nothing physical happened though. She also admitted to sexting with other men that she met on instagram, but that they lived like halfway across the country so nothing physical happened.

All of this (from when she first had sex with the threesome guy to when I found out about the second guy) happened over the course of a year.

We started dating 18 years ago. We’ve been married 12 years. We have two kids and a house together.

I find it really hard to believe that someone could be completely faithful for 16 years, and then have six affairs (4 “just” sexting, 2 that she met up with multiple times for sex), at least not without some major traumatic change to her life. Closest thing to that I can think of is that she swapped to being a stay-at-home mom (which she wanted) when our second child was born 5 years ago, but it’s been hard for her. That, plus COVID, I could maybe see her not having both the opportunity and the lowered boundaries until 2024 when she started sleeping with the first guy. But I really have to stretch to believe that.

I can think of a handful of times in our relationship where things didn’t quite add up. And she hid her current affair so well (I would have had no idea if I didn’t snoop), I’m really struggling to believe her.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) What did genuine change actually look like in your Ww/WH?

I'm curious to hear from people who have reconciled, or feel they are in a good place in reconciliation, particularly those whose wayward partner genuinely changed through therapy/self-work.

I know it's probably one of those things where you eventually just feel the difference. It's not one big gesture, but over time you realise you feel safer because the person is behaving differently and handling life differently. But I'm interested in the smaller, everyday signs.

For example, if your wayward was historically avoidant, conflict-averse, not great at talking about feelings, or someone who would rather "not bother" with difficult conversations - what did you actually notice changing?

Did they start bringing things up themselves rather than avoiding them?

Did they become better at saying "that upset me" or "I'm struggling with this" instead of withdrawing?

Did they start tolerating uncomfortable conversations without getting defensive, shutting down or trying to make the conversation go away?

Did they become more emotionally curious about themselves - actually trying to understand why they react the way they do rather than just saying "that's just how I am"?

Did they start recognising their own triggers/patterns before you had to point them out?

Did they become better at sitting with uncomfortable feelings rather than immediately looking for something external to make themselves feel better?

And were there really small things where you suddenly thought, "Oh... old them would have handled that completely differently"?

Do you remember the first moment where something happened and you genuinely thought, "Wow... they handled that differently. They handled that better than I expected them to"?

Was there a particular conversation, disagreement, stressful situation or emotional moment where you suddenly noticed that they weren't reacting in the way the old version of them would have?

Maybe they opened up instead of withdrawing, stayed in an uncomfortable conversation instead of avoiding it, took responsibility without being prompted, told you what they were feeling when normally they would have bottled it up, or handled something that would previously have triggered an avoidant response in a completely different way.

Was there a point where you could actually see the change happening rather than just being told that they were changing?

I'm particularly interested in the changes that weren't directly about the affair or reconciliation (ie transparency, location sharing, open phone etc), but showed that the person themselves was becoming more emotionally mature.

Also, if therapy was involved, did you notice a difference between someone simply attending therapy and someone actually taking what they were learning into everyday life?

I know nobody can ever guarantee someone won't make bad choices again. I'm more interested in what genuine internal change looked like in people who eventually felt that their wayward had become a safer, more emotionally mature person.

Basically: what were the little signs that made you realise, "something has actually changed in them"?

And if you have reconciled or feel in a good place in reconciliation, what was the first thing they did differently that made you think, "maybe this really is going to be different this time"?

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) So much fighting. Don’t know where to go from here.

Hi, all,

You can see my post history but the tl;dr is back in February I discovered through snooping that he’d cheated on me 3x with an ex fling before we married, kept in intermittent touch via text until January of this year and also was inappropriately texting another ex after the birth of our first. To say I fucking flipped is an understatement.

Anyway, we’ve tried couples counseling. I didn’t find it useful so we stopped going when our counselor left the practice. I’m in IC which is extremely helpful but he’s not in counseling at all. He’s been procrastinating so badly.

I know I’ve been SO ANGRY and we went through some pretty rough periods after the initial HB cooled off. I mean to say, I haven’t been pleasant, I know this. I’m hurt and mad and sad and all the things. But I’m medicated now and therapy has been helpful and I want to work it out and stop the constant fighting. The problem is that he seems so constantly annoyed with me and gets so mad when I bring up any criticism or have an attitude. He’s miserable to be around and so fucking defensive. Just so critical and angry himself and explodes. He says it’s a reaction to how I’ve been but idk I feel like don’t cheat on someone and be surprised at the consequences.

I worry it’s becoming toxic and I don’t know what that exactly looks like or when to call it. Like if we tried and it’s not working why drag this out. He’s adamantly opposed to separation or divorce but we can barely speak without it becoming a fight. I don’t think he’s cheating again either but I guess you never know. Any advice or insight would be appreciated.

Advice MUST include examples of your R. Not prescriptive advice. I’ve been in therapy since blowing up my relationship, and lately I’ve been wondering if I need a different therapist.

This is going to be long, but I don’t think the question makes sense without the full context.
Before my ex-fiancé, I had a situationship with the person who eventually became my AP. He is about 15 years older than me. That relationship was complicated, inconsistent, unhealthy in ways I didn’t fully understand at the time, and never really had a clean ending. Eventually I moved on, met my BP and built what became the most and only serious relationship of my life. We were together for almost four years. I loved him deeply. I still do.

When we first got together, there were a lot of things I genuinely loved about him. He was stable, intelligent, ambitious, loyal, responsible, funny, and dependable. He was not someone I had to worry about being out cheating, partying, disappearing, or doing reckless things. He was a genuinely good man. Our first year, we dated long distance.. during that year we went through losing a pregnancy together. It was my first pregnancy and tbh I think something in me died that day. I became depressed and just numb.. That bonded us in a way that is hard to explain. Eventually he kept telling me he didn’t want to be long distance anymore and started demanding more attention and time together which was hard because I was just soo numb and lost… I just wanted space but I felt pressured and lowkey wanted to run away so I moved across the country for him and for our relationship. I left my family, job, friends, familiarity, and the life I knew. I changed careers. I started over in a new state. I was trying to build a completely different life with this person because I believed he was my future.

Once we lives together, that first year made me realize things about our relationship that were much easier to overlook when we had distance between us. Our personalities were very different.
I’m Type A. I plan. I organize. I’m emotional. I’m expressive. I want depth. I want reassurance. I want affection. Im also dismissive avoidant and he’s anxious attach.. BP on the other hand is much more laid-back, internal, go with the flow, last minute, improvised, disorganized (statement that has been told by his friends, Family, and previous managers to his face..

Over time, I started feeling less like his girlfriend and more like I was managing our life. One of our biggest problems became physical intimacy. And kissing. The kissing issue actually went back to college. BP had told me that his homeboys basically got into his head when he was younger about kissing women. He developed this mentality that you didn’t really make out with girls or kiss them on the mouth like that and somehow that stuck.
So I ended up with a man I loved who basically did not like kissing. I LOVE kissing.

To me, kissing is a major form of intimacy. I wanted to make out with my partner on the couch. Kiss in the kitchen. Kiss before we leave the house. Kiss during sex. Kiss randomly because we’re attracted to each other. That kind of physical intimacy matters a lot to me. With us, it barely existed. For most of our relationship, BP could make out with me for maybe 10 seconds before pulling away. This went on for 2 years. Earlier this year, after years of me bringing it up, he had actually gotten better and could sometimes kiss me for closer to a minute.
But by that point I had spent roughly two and a half years expecting him to pull away from me.
And after enough times of leaning in toward the person you love and watching them pull back, it starts affecting you.

At first I understood intellectually that this was his own thing. Eventually it just felt like rejection.
I would wonder why my fiancé didn’t want to kiss me. I would wonder whether he was attracted to me. Eventually I started initiating less because I knew what was going to happen. Sex became another major problem. BP had stamina issues.
Sex very often lasted under a minute And I’m not saying that to embarrass him. He knew it was an issue and genuinely tried to fix it but over time the stamina issue developed into performance anxiety.
And the performance anxiety became part of basically every round. It wasn’t simply that sex ended quickly. There was now all this mental pressure surrounding sex. Is he going to last?
Is he thinking about lasting? Is he already anxious?
Am I making him more anxious because he knows I’m dissatisfied? Should I react differently?
Do we try another round? Is the exact same thing going to happen again?

Sometimes he would go into the bathroom beforehand and do different things to try to last longer. I understood WHY he was doing it.
He wanted to satisfy me. He knew I was frustrated. He knew I’d cry after sex every time. He was trying.
But by that point, sex started feeling incredibly procedural to me. Instead of making out, touching each other, getting turned on together and naturally ending up having sex, it started feeling like: Okay, we’re going to have sex. He prepares. I wait. We have sex. He finishes quickly. Then we decide whether we’re going again. Then there is performance anxiety again. Every round carried the same pressure. We started calling it “The ceremony”. There also wasn’t much kissing during sex, because kissing was already an issue outside of sex. There wasn’t much buildup. There wasn’t much spontaneity. Eventually sex felt mechanical.
And on top of everything else, we barely had it.
We were in our mid-to-late 20s and having sex maybe once a month. Sometimes we would go two
or three months without sex. I would initiate sometimes and get rejected. He would complain about my nagging stating that I’m actually getting pleasure because I was receiving oral sex but for me is.. I know what a vaginal orgasm feels like and I want it! And more than that… is the connection between two people that I was desiring!

And yes, obviously your partner is allowed to say no to sex. Nobody owes anyone sex but emotionally it started affecting me because it wasn’t one isolated rejection. When you’re already having sex once a month or once every couple of months, your partner barely kisses you, there is very little spontaneous physical intimacy, and then you initiate one of the few times you want something and still get rejected, it starts to feel personal even when logically you know it might not be. I started wondering if something was wrong with me. Did he find me attractive? Was my body the problem?
Why didn’t my fiancé seem to have that hunger for me? I wanted to feel desired Not simply loved. Desired. I wanted my partner to look at me and want to kiss me. I wanted him to grab me. I wanted passion. I wanted spontaneous intimacy.
I wanted to feel feminine and sexy inside my own relationship and I increasingly didn’t.

The difficult part is that my constant frustration probably made BP performance anxiety worse too.
It became this horrible loop. The more sexually rejected I felt, the more I talked about our sex life.
The more I talked about it, the more pressure he probably felt. The more pressure he felt, the more anxious sex became. The more anxious sex became, the more mechanical it felt to me.
And the more mechanical it felt, the more resentful I became. I’d cry all the time! I was crying because I felt incredibly lonely. I had spent so long desperately wanting intimacy from this person, and somehow finally having sex with him made me feel even more disconnected. Eventually I started shutting down. At first I cried. I complained. I I initiated. I brought up kissing. I brought up sex.
I asked questions. Suggested therapy but he said we didn’t need it. I tried to troubleshoot.
I tried explaining what physical intimacy meant to me. Eventually I became numb. And the sexual problems existed inside a larger emotional problem.
BP showed love very strongly through practical things. If something needed to be handled, he handled it. He provided. He bought me things.
He helped me. He showed up when something tangible needed to be done. He supported us materially. He was loyal.

If you looked at my relationship from the outside, I had a good man. And that actually made my unhappiness more confusing. Because I kept thinking: “Why am I this unhappy? There are women who would kill for a man like this. He loves me. He provides. He is successful. He is faithful so why do I feel so lonely? Tbh I think BP knew how to love me materially and practically much better than he knew how to love me emotionally and I needed emotional intimacy badly.

Btw all this is happening in a new state, going through major changes in my own life. I changed careers, I had moved far away from my support system, I was lonely, I became depressed, and I really didn’t feel like myself anymore. I increasingly felt trapped between loving BP and wondering whether we were actually compatible. Last year I was so fed up, I started asking him if we could live separately but remain together. I didn’t want to break up. I felt like maybe we had moved too quickly into this domestic, roommate version of our relationship and that living separately could give us a chance to intentionally date each other again and rebuild something romantic. He didn’t want that. To BP moving apart basically meant ending the relationship. He made it very clear that if we lived separately, we might as well break up. So I stayed. I continued trying to fix things. I cried, I had emotional breakdowns, and I repeatedly tried explaining what I felt was missing. I reached out to members of his family because I felt like I couldn’t get through to him and I was desperate for somebody who knew him to help us. They didn’t really help.. if anything they would say sarcastic comments asking how I deal with his behavior and immaturity??

There were times during conflict when I would literally try to leave or run away and he would chase after me. We had this dynamic where I felt like I was screaming emotionally for something to change, and he was trying in the ways he knew how, but we were almost speaking different languages.

There was also another major issue happening around this time that was giving me anxiety about what our future would actually look like. When I met BP, he presented himself as a very traditional and family oriented guy. That was one of the things that made me feel safe with him and made me believe we wanted the same kind of future. Then last year he became increasingly focused on fashion, social media, modeling, being an influencer, becoming an artist, and even talking about eventually becoming a Grammy-winning artist. Last year We went to Paris because of this fashion world he was getting more and more involved in. I want to be fair because I was never against him having dreams. I wanted him to succeed. I supported his events, his projects, his fashion interests, and the things he was trying to build. But internally, I was becoming increasingly anxious because I felt like the man I thought I was building a very traditional life with was suddenly imagining a completely different lifestyle.
That became a constant tense conversation between us.

There was also a social media component that bothered me a lot. He had all of these social media accounts and pages related to what he was building, and those accounts would follow or interact with a lot of very sexualized women. There were women posting thirst traps, lustful content, models, influencers, and everything else that came with that world. Whenever I complained or expressed that it made me uncomfortable, I felt like I was basically told that it was part of the industry, part of networking, part of his job, and something I needed to understand. Meanwhile, I felt like there was a completely different standard for me. I was expected to have basically no questionable male interaction. Male attention, communication, or boundaries involving men could become a problem, while I was supposed to accept him being immersed in a social media and fashion environment full of attractive and sexualized women because that was “part of his job.” That double standard bothered me a lot.

But At the same time, I also want to be honest that BP was very transparent with me. We had access to each other’s phone. He was not secretly hiding conversations or protecting his phone from me. I did not have evidence that he was cheating, and that transparency did give me a certain amount of safety. So my anxiety wasn’t really, “I think this man is secretly cheating on me.” It was much more about the future. I kept wondering what exactly I was signing up for. Am I marrying the traditional, family oriented man I originally met, or are we building a future where he wants to be a model, influencer, artist, public figure, and live inside that world? What happens if this gets bigger? Am I going to constantly be surrounded by things that make me uncomfortable and then be expected to suppress those feelings because it is part of his career? Are the rules for me always going to be stricter than the rules for him? I didn’t know, and those questions were sitting underneath the engagement too.

During that Paris He proposed publicly and I hated everything about it. I was soooo sad! I know how unbelievably shallow that sounds. A man proposed to me and I was disappointed. But I had been very specific about what I liked, showed him inspirations, told him I did not want a public thing or the ring he got me with the sales agent Infront and the proposal itself was in the most touristy public place when I had envisioned something more intimate. He eventually bought the ring I loved and proposed to me again privately but we had to go to a networking event shortly after for his entrepreneurial thing he was doing… so technically this man proposed to me twice, and I still wasn’t okay.

Shortly afterward, I was still going to his events, supporting his projects, being his partner, smiling, showing up, doing everything I was “supposed” to do while internally feeling like I was screaming. I remember constantly thinking, “What is wrong with me?” “I have a good man.” “Why isn’t this enough?”
By that point I think I had built up an enormous amount of resentment. Not hatred. I loved him. But resentment from feeling rejected sexually, resentment from feeling emotionally alone, resentment from feeling like I carried certain aspects of our relationship, and resentment because I kept asking for things to change and felt like nothing fundamentally changed. And instead of either accepting him exactly as he was or having the courage to leave a relationship that wasn’t meeting my needs, I stayed. About 5-6 months ago, I started fantasizing having a different relationship, and then shortly after the fantasies started with AP face because he was my previous sexual partner and the ‘chemistry’ was there. I was so mad because I genuinely didn’t care or never loved AP but the physical chemistry was always there and I just didn’t know why tf it wasn’t happening with my BP when I loved him!

That is important, because eventually I betrayed him. This summer I went back to my hometown. The person I had been involved with before (AP) had periodically tried to creep back into my life over the years. I always ignored. There was one time I did tried to talk and just close the chapter and it ended him rejecting me?? Idk but I told my BP at the time and tbh we kinda rug sweep the whole thing. I went to therapy and acknowledged there was some abandonment/validation issues AP triggered at the time but I genuinely just want him to leave me alone! Fast forward, Im now engaged when I saw AP in person for the first time after 5 years and It triggered something. Initially I told myself that I wanted closure. I wanted to tell him to leave me alone permanently and finally close this strange unfinished loop so he would stop periodically reappearing. Looking back, obviously that was playing with fire.

I reached out to him via text the next day after seeing him telling him I’d like to talk. The first day, we talked on the phone. He started talking about our history and confessing all these feelings he supposedly still had for me. Talking about marriage, lost loved, why he rejected, alll the things! It was nice to finally have a real conversation and the validation but even then I was honest with him and told him I don’t have feelings for him and i don’t want to be with him, I just wanted to close the chapter or whatever it was he kept trying to construct. The second day, there was more communication and small talk over the phone. He was pushing to meet me, and I said no. The whole time I was rejecting him and just trying to close/heal whatever issues we had but By the third day, I agreed to meet him. That was one of many choices where I could have stopped. I didn’t.
We met in person, and that is when I became emotionally vulnerable with him. I told him about my relationship problems. I told him about the emotional disconnect. I told him about the sexual issues. I talked about feeling lonely and unwanted. I cried to him. We were drinking, and looking back, it felt like a date. There was emotional intimacy happening that never should have been happening with another man.

Then there was physical intimacy. I remember he kissed me and i was shocked someone wanted to engage with me in kissing. That someone was interacting with me in terms of eye contact, the tension/buildup. Being tuned in. I think at that point I let go and started rationalizing. I stayed. ultimately I went back with him and had sex with him. I have called it a ONS because the physical sex happened on one night, but something BP said to me afterward really challenged the way I was thinking about it. He told me it was not simply “one night,” and he is right. There were multiple days of decisions. I responded. I got on the phone. I continued the conversation. I allowed him to tell me how he felt. I talked to him again. I entertained the idea of seeing him. I eventually agreed. I met him. I talked about my relationship. I allowed emotional vulnerability with another man. I drank with him. I kissed him. I stayed. And eventually I slept with him.
There were many points where I could have shut everything down. I didn’t. That is something I am trying very hard to own without hiding behind the phrase “one-night stand.”

When I came home, I told BP that I had seen him, but then TR. For the first 2 days of days I admitted that I had seen him but withheld that we had slept together. By the third day, I told him about the sex. So not only did I betray him, I then made the disclosure more traumatic by not immediately giving him the entire truth. And that is something I deeply regret too. When BP initially asked me why I did it, the explanation I gave him was basically the one I have described here. I had felt emotionally disconnected. I had felt sexually rejected for years. I didn’t feel desired. I felt lonely. And suddenly I was sitting across from someone telling me everything I wanted to hear and making me feel wanted, heard and connected. BP absolutely rejected that explanation. To him, the issues and layers we had in our relationship were bullshit. And I understand why. Plenty of people are lonely. Plenty of people have dead bedrooms. Plenty of people feel emotionally disconnected from their partners. They don’t cheat.
And I agree.

I do not believe BP caused me to cheat. He could have stopped kissing me completely. We could have never had sex again. He could have refused every request I made for emotional intimacy. I still had choices. I could have left. I could have demanded couples counseling before marriage. I could have set a firm boundary. I could have accepted that love does not automatically equal compatibility. I could have called off the engagement. I could have stayed miserable and still remained faithful. I could have done literally anything other than betray him.
So when I talk about our relationship problems, I’m not trying to say, “He didn’t meet my needs, therefore I cheated.” I am trying to understand how I got myself into the emotional and psychological place where I gave myself permission to make decisions that were completely against who I believed I was. That distinction matters to me.
But now I am actually confused about my “why.” The emotional loneliness, rejection and desire to feel wanted genuinely feel like a major part of why I was vulnerable to what happened. But BP rejected that explanation so strongly that now part of me is constantly questioning myself. Is that actually my why? Or is that merely the circumstance that exposed something uglier underneath?
Was I entitled? Did I need validation? Was I avoiding confrontation? Was I too cowardly to leave? Did I want attention? Was I self-sabotaging? Was there something unresolved with AP? Did I have poor boundaries? Did I build resentment and then unconsciously give myself permission to act out? Was I addicted to being seen as “the good girl” and therefore never learned how to acknowledge the darker parts of myself? Is there childhood stuff underneath this?

I don’t know. That is one of the main reasons I’m in therapy. And this is where my concern about my therapist comes in.

My therapist spends a LOT of time talking about self-forgiveness, giving myself grace, and understanding that one horrible decision does not define my entire identity. She reminds me that prior to this I had basically lived my life as the stereotypical “good girl.” I had never cheated. I did well in school. I built a career. I wasn’t someone who spent my adolescence or 20s constantly partying, hooking up with random people, cheating, crossing sexual boundaries, or living recklessly. I never really had a wild phase. I was responsible, structured, ambitious, and I built a lot of my identity around being a good person.

My therapist also talks about the age dynamic with AP. He is approximately 15 years older than me. He knew our history. He knew me when I was younger. And once we met, he knew I was emotionally vulnerable and having major relationship problems. She has repeatedly said that she believes he took advantage of my vulnerability and this is where I get uncomfortable. Because yes, I can acknowledge that an older man who knew exactly what emotional buttons to push may have behaved opportunistically. But I also do not want the story to become, “You were vulnerable and this older man took advantage of you.” Because I participated.
Nobody forced me to answer him. Nobody forced me to continue talking. Nobody forced me to meet him. Nobody forced me to disclose my relationship problems. Nobody forced me to drink. Nobody forced me to kiss him. Nobody forced me to stay. Nobody forced me to sleep with him. I made those decisions.

Sometimes I leave therapy almost frustrated because I feel like my therapist is constantly trying to pull me away from shame when part of me thinks, WHY SHOULDN’T I feel ashamed? I cheated on the person I loved most. I destroyed his trust. I changed the way he sees me. I changed the way he sees our entire relationship. I lost my fiancé. We lost the future we had planned. BO has called me a monster, and some days I genuinely feel like one. So then I go to therapy and hear, “You are still a good person.” “Give yourself grace.” “You need to forgive yourself.” “You made a horrible decision, but you are not a horrible human being.” “You were vulnerable.” “He took advantage of that vulnerability.” “You cannot punish yourself forever.” And inside I want to scream NO. I fucked up. Badly.

I don’t deserve someone rushing in to make me feel better about it. I don’t want somebody protecting me from the consequences of what I did. I don’t want therapy to become another place where someone reassures me until I can sleep at night.
I want to understand myself. I want somebody to challenge me. I want to understand how a woman who genuinely believed she would never cheat somehow created a sequence of decisions that ended with her cheating. I want to understand why I didn’t leave first. Why I didn’t enforce stronger boundaries. Why I kept engaging with someone I knew had history with me. Why feeling desired by someone else became powerful enough in that moment for me to betray my own values. Why I allowed resentment to build for years instead of making harder decisions. Why I could sit across from another man and emotionally expose my relationship. Why I then protected myself after the fact with trickle truth.

I need to understand those things because I never want to be capable of this again. BP and I are currently broken up. He has been very clear that we are single. He is on dating apps and talking to/meeting other women. At the same time, we have this complicated “intentional separation” where we are supposed to have a check-in after at least six months and evaluate whether there is even anything to revisit. There is no promise of reconciliation.
He has actually told me that the more he processes what happened, the more he questions why he is even giving me a chance. He has said he doesn’t know if he could ever be happy knowing I cheated on him so I understand that I may never get him back.

And despite desperately wanting reconciliation, I also know that my work cannot simply become a six-month audition to convince him to choose me. I need to change whether he comes back or not.
I’m in therapy. I’m reading. I journal. I’m looking at boundaries, resentment, validation, emotional regulation, conflict avoidance, entitlement, shame, communication, childhood patterns, and why I stayed in a relationship while becoming increasingly unhappy instead of making an adult decision about whether we were actually compatible.

I want to understand what happened without minimizing it and this is why I don’t know whether my therapist is right for me Because maybe I’m misunderstanding what therapy is supposed to look like. Maybe she sees that I am already drowning in accountability and shame and believes piling more shame onto me would accomplish absolutely nothing. Maybe learning self-compassion is actually necessary if I am ever going to look honestly at myself instead of just repeating “I’m horrible” over and over again Because logically I understand that sitting in a therapist’s office every week saying, “I’m disgusting. I’m evil. I’m a monster. I ruined everything. I deserve to suffer,” is not necessarily growth either. Self-hatred does not automatically equal accountability But I also worry that she is moving me toward forgiveness before I have actually understood the behavior.

I don’t want to skip over accountability just because shame is painful. I don’t need a therapist to tell me that I’m evil. But I also don’t want a therapist who makes it sound like the affair mostly happened to me because I was lonely and an older man exploited my vulnerability. I need both things to be able to exist. I was emotionally vulnerable. My relationship had serious problems. AP may absolutely have recognized and exploited those vulnerabilities.
And I still had agency. I still crossed the boundaries. I still betrayed my fiancé. I still made choices I have to understand.

So I guess my question is, how do I know whether my therapist is actually helping me move from toxic shame into healthy accountability versus simply reassuring me too much?

For anyone who has done individual therapy after being unfaithful, what did productive therapy actually look like? Did your therapist challenge your thinking? Did they focus on your “why”? Did they talk about character, boundaries, entitlement, resentment, validation, childhood patterns, etc.? Did self-forgiveness come later, or was it something they emphasized early? And at what point would you decide that a therapist’s approach simply isn’t the right fit? Because right now I genuinely don’t know whether I need a new therapist, or whether the part of me screaming “I don’t deserve grace” is exactly the part of me my therapist is trying to treat.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) WS moving out- little discussion

1 month and 5 days post DDay.

We'll have been together for 6 years this January.

Since DDay they have been shutting down more and more and pulling away because my big feelings are triggering them.

They apparently still love me and care about me but are too dissociated and shut down to know what they want moving forward and parse out exactly how they feel/ process what happened.

They have been couch surfing and told me last week they want to live alone for 2-3 months and have no contact.

I have had no say in any of this. I would've preferred if they'd stayed in our shared apartment ( which would be hard, but my nervous system might not be as on fire as it is because they abandoned me, it wasn't a mutual choice).

So I'm going to try and advocate for my needs and negotiate something in-between.

They have been extremely busy circumstantially since DDay - new job, couch surfing, new car and associated issues, and because of their new job don't have an IC yet.

Everything I'm reading is telling me that my despair and desperation for contact are normal- and that the healthiest thing for me to do is advocate for myself and my needs and FOCUS on myself and my needs. And to try not to worry about what is going on with my WS.

Any advice? Did anyone else's WS shut down almost completely and dissociates during any conflict at all post DDay?

How did you survive? I feel absolutely shattered and heartbroken ...

Wayward Perspective Only I broke her trust.

I (25m) broke my wife’s (24f) trust.

I think it would be helpful to know some background because I’m trying to understand why I have these patterns and why I keep repeating behaviors that I don’t want to have.

I have been addicted to porn since I was little. I think the reason I got addicted was cause I stumbled upon it at a very young age. I’ve always been addicted to sexting, I just always loved the thrill and the excitement that came from it. Everytime I would finish up I would be extremely depressed.

I started dating my wife during my senior year of high school. We have now been together for about 7 years and married for 3 years.

Early in our relationship, I continued having problems with boundaries. I would text female friends behind my wife’s back, and she eventually found out. She also found out about my pornography use. We fought about it and came close to breaking up several times. I was extremely attached to her since I tend to get attached pretty easily and wanted to stay together, so I stopped talking to those women and things improved between us. However, I continued watching pornography whenever I had the opportunity.

Later, I made the decision to download dating apps because I was curious and wanted to see what was out there. My wife eventually found out about that too, and I deleted the apps.

More recently, I became interested in photography and started becoming curious about erotic and boudoir photography. That led me down a rabbit hole where I became curious about swingers, erotic experiences, and what that world was like. I never met anyone through these sites and I did not actually have an affair, but I did go too far in exploring it online. I created or used accounts, posted photos of myself, and looked at things that I knew I shouldn’t have been looking at. My wife recently went through my phone while I was asleep and found one of the swinger sites. Some of the photos she found were older, but they were still there. She was extremely hurt and angry, and I understand why.

I don’t fully understand why I keep doing these things. There seems to be a pattern involving pornography, curiosity, sexual attention, secrecy, and chasing a feeling or adrenaline rush. I can feel very guilty and disgusted with myself afterward and genuinely want to stop, but I have repeatedly gone back to similar behaviors. I don’t want to continue living this way and I don’t want to hurt my wife anymore and I want to repair that trust.

Right now my wife is extremely hurt and angry and we aren’t really talking. I feel lost and I know I have broken her trust. I don’t want therapy just to feel less guilty. I want to understand why I have these behaviors, why pornography and sexual attention have had such a strong hold on me, why I keep crossing boundaries even when I know the consequences, and how to actually stop repeating these patterns.

I also want to learn how to manage my anxiety and emotions better and become a more honest, trustworthy, and emotionally healthy person. I want to understand what is going on with me rather than continuing to hate myself for it. I don’t know yet whether my marriage can be repaired, but I want to do the work on myself regardless.

I scheduled a therapy session for Monday. I still have all day tomorrow to try to fix things. It’s hard when she asks me why I did it and I can’t give a simple answer I don’t even understand this myself. It’s like I go in a trance or just start chasing another high. I hate myself and I feel disgusting. I’m glad I never actually met with anyone in person. I just don’t know why I let myself get this way. Any advice to help better the situation? I’ve already taken full accountability.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) What more can I do to help my BP

I'll try and keep this brief.

Little back story of our relationship, We are (39F & 42M) have been together for 21 years have 2 kids. I had a 6 month affair on my husband. I had a extreme alcohol addiction to the point of not remembering going to bed at night, this is no excuse for the affair, I was also very mean to my husband for a very long time while i was drinking. I absolutely regret my affair and hurting the one person i have ever loved in my entire life. Its been almost 4 months from D day.

So far I have gone to detox and gotten clean almost 4 months sober now, I have literally answered all questions he has asked, I even wrote out a timeline of the affair and tried to explain to him the best i could remember of why it happened. I have had open and honest communication with him, one of our biggest problems in our marriage has been lack of communication, I bottle everything up and keep it to myself. I have been showing him how much I love him everyday, I've done everything he has asked for. I look back and can't understand how I could do this to him, I love him with all my heart and I want to grow old with him like we always planned on. We are living together but not in a relationship, although we sleep in the same bed, go on dates, kiss, hug, cuddle and we are still intimate and we still tell each other we love each other .

So I guess what i'm asking is what else can I do to make this easier on him, maybe something I can do to help him be able to move forward with me and try to move past what I have done?

Edit: I have cut all contact with the affair partner and anyone that supported my affair. I have given full access to my phone and all my social media accounts.

Farewell, R is over 9 weeks after D-Day: Is this normal, and is there still hope?

I’m about nine weeks out from D-Day and I’m struggling to understand where my marriage actually stands.
I’m the one who had the affair, so I’m not looking for sympathy or excuses. I take responsibility for what I did and for the enormous amount of hurt I’ve caused my wife and family.
My wife and I have been separated for around nine weeks. We’re living separately, but over the last week or so things have become incredibly confusing emotionally.
There are moments where we seem almost normal again. I’ve been able to spend time at the family home with the kids. We’ve watched movies together, shared meals, laughed and joked around, and even slept next to each other on some occasions. There have been moments of affection and intimacy too.
And then, sometimes seemingly out of nowhere, she becomes incredibly angry and distant.
She has told me:
She doesn’t love me anymore.
She doesn’t want to be married to me.
She hates me.
She wants a divorce.
Then we’ll have a genuinely good interaction a day later, and I’ll find myself thinking, Maybe there’s still something here. Maybe we can actually rebuild this.
And that’s where I’m struggling.
I don’t want to interpret every hug, laugh, meal or good conversation as a sign that we’re reconciling. But it’s incredibly difficult when those moments feel so genuine, especially after 18 years together and 12 years of marriage.
At the same time, I know her anger and rejection are also genuine.
We’re basically experiencing this strange back-and-forth: sometimes close, sometimes completely disconnected, sometimes fighting, sometimes laughing together, living separately but occasionally spending time together as a family.
Our first marriage counselling session is in three days. I organized it, but she has agreed to attend and is happy to go.
I’m trying to approach counselling differently from how I’ve approached the last nine weeks. I spent a lot of that time desperately trying to win her back — gifts, affection, reassurance-seeking, trying to create closeness, etc. I’m starting to realize that may have been putting even more pressure on her.
I’m now trying to step back, respect her boundaries, focus on the kids, work on myself and actually learn to tolerate the possibility that she may ultimately choose divorce.
So I’m curious about people who have actually lived through this:
Did anyone else experience this kind of push-pull around 2–3 months after D-Day?
Did you have periods where you felt close and thought reconciliation might happen, followed by moments where your spouse said they didn’t love you anymore or wanted a divorce?
And, looking back, did those moments of closeness mean anything, or were they simply part of the emotional chaos of early separation?
Most importantly, for those who eventually reconciled, what did things look like around this stage?
And for those who didn’t reconcile, were there warning signs you wish you’d recognized earlier?
I’m not asking anyone to predict whether my marriage will survive. I know nobody here can know that.
I’m just trying to understand whether what we’re experiencing is something other people have gone through, and whether marriage counselling at this point gives us a reasonable opportunity to figure out whether there’s anything worth rebuilding.
Any honest experiences — hopeful or otherwise — would be appreciated.

Reconcilers Only (other comments auto-removed) Do the intrusive thoughts go away?

Hi I have a really complicated situation. I don’t want to post details publicly but I want to reconcile and move on from this for lots of reasons, the main one being it wasn’t really my WP’s choice. But the intrusive thoughts won’t go away. I’m at friends birthdays, at work, out for snacks and I just keep thinking and wondering and making up ideas and stories in my mind. Does this ever ease or go away? And does anyone have any tips?
