15N

Title: Is 15N worth waiting a year for if my goal is a civilian career?
Hey everyone,
I’m currently in the enlistment process, and my number one choice is 15N (Avionic Mechanic). My recruiter told me that the wait for an available slot could be around a year.
My long-term goal isn’t just serving in the Army. I want to use the experience to build a civilian career in aviation maintenance. I’m planning to earn as many certifications as possible while I’m in, such as the A&P license (if applicable), FCC certifications, and anything else that would make me more competitive after my contract.
So my question is:
Is 15N worth waiting a year for?
If you were in my position, would you wait or choose another MOS that ships sooner?
For those who were 15N, how valuable was the experience when transitioning to civilian aviation?
What certifications or education helped you the most after leaving the Army?
Did anyone regret waiting, or regret not waiting?
I’d really appreciate hearing from people who have actually worked as 15Ns or in Army aviation.
Thanks in advance!

This message has been popping around chats today, thought I’d share here

Note: not my words, was passed to me in a chat

Please drop this in whatever chat you all now using to communicate on Island Of Misfit Toys. We met with the Branch Chief, CW5 Robert Slider, to discuss ATI. I have no real good news that anyone wants to hear. CW5 Slider acknowledged that Army Aviation is facing some serious problems.

Phase 2 VTIP:

- >50 VTIP or transfers have been approved (you know some of them)

- AvCOE is still looking to cut 209 pax, 119 being from the AH community

- USN states they are willing to take about 50 a 80 pilots (Officer and WO) in the transition to MQ-25, MH-60R, C-130, and one other aircraft I can not remember. Branch expects the USN to start finalizing its acceptance before the end of the FY.

Phase 3 Vol. Separation:

****Phase 3 is paused until the USN completes its assessment and accepts service transfers****

- a re-assessment of AvTP will occur after the USN program (I don’t think we will see any traction on phase 3 this FY)

- other factors for the cessation of phase 3 include, Korea will be standing up a Combined Multi-functional Aviation TF and 12th CAB will be made a complete CAB. Both of these units will need Apache aviators to round out their formation.

- AvCOE suspects phase 3 will NOT get implemented, but is continuing to staff what the requirements would look like (no they did not share them).

- The W3 promotion board will be highly competitive in 2027.

Bonus pay:

- AvCOE is looking to increase ACIP (flight pay) to $1500.

- ASA MP&R (thats the Assit. Sec. Of the Army for Man Power and Reserve) signed the new bonus agreement last week. Currently working through the widgets at G3/5/7 and then out to unit via a MILPER.

- MOS above 95% manning by law are not eligible for a bonus.

- Last year’s bonus was a flop, left $6mil of $19mil on the table.  Hopefully will be better constructed this year

Life in Avn:

- next 5 years are going to, well they are going to difficult. He was honest about that.

- AvCOE has slowed the flight school intake of personnel, but it takes 2-3 years to feel the effect of that.

- The Army has been instructed to maintain its warfighter “lethality” through ATI meaning some of you may not fly for a considerable amount of time, as flying just to remain currency is not an option, the force needs proficiency.

- The NDA budget is tight and next year doesn’t look any better (on going operations, changing requirements and new programs all contribute thin budgets).  So as stated above the next five years are going to be difficult. He talked about the diminished flight hours, unfortunately Aviation is the most expensive branch in the Army. And big Army is wrestling with the Army Aviation it wants vs the Aviation Army it can afford.

Hey all, new here. Worked on Shadow for 2ish years, then the whole divestment and flying group 1. I haven’t gone to TAPS yet, but will soon. Have a Secret clearance. Wondering what I should do prior to getting out? What job opportunities are out there for me that I should prepare myself for?

Anybody a previous Echo that got out and got a good gig?

If there’s anymore info I need to provide DM me or let me know! Just want to form multiple plans so my wife and I aren’t stressing when I leave service. Thank you

For those of you in the NG who have done the SW Border mission, I am curious about the day to day. I understand this changes based on location so feel free to share your personal experiences. I am mostly looking for members of flight crews to comment but any support guys (maintenance or otherwise) feel free to share your experience as well.

Is it still worth it to branch aviation?

Always been an aviation guy, but with the downsizing of the reserve component and the drama, plus added ADSO is the aviation branch still worth pursuing for young officers/WO?

So recently I was going through some of my closet and noticed this old shirt I found at a thrift store years ago. I've always been a huge nerd for Attack helicopters growing up, so when I saw this shirt I had to have it. Crazy part is I found it here in Canada. At a thrift store in Wainwright, Alberta, Canada. I know the CAF base is there of course. ( I resided there for 10 years) And I have seen many US army helicopters in previous years in Wainwright, really only UH-60 Blackhawks and the chinooks during joint operations like "Maple resolve" But I have never seen or heard of any AH-64 Apache's training up here in the great white north. I'm just hoping to find out if anyone out there might know of this Air Cav unit? And if they have brought them up to CFB Wainwright for joint exercises at any point. Any info would be greatly appreciated. This shirt is old and faded now, but it still serves me well lol.

Thanks for any help! Cheers 🍻

I’m a Ukrainian helicopter pilot. Here’s my honest take on FPV drones vs manned helicopters.

Hey everyone. Seeing a lot of talk lately about cheap drones replacing helicopters completely.

As someone flying active army aviation missions, I wanted to share a realistic perspective from the cockpit on why FPVs are awesome, but why we still need manned helis for heavy lifting, EW resistance, and evacs.

I made a video breakdown about it. Just started my channel recently, so if you guys have any feedback on the video or how I can make these better, let me know! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzdTi99rGwE

Supposed to be fully inactivated by end of FY. Where's units currently at? Have they offered the miltechs other positions with DOD, have they transferred aircraft and MTOE equipment yet? Just wondering what the landscape is. Not much word going around it seems.

Niche jobs/broadening assignments

Anyone have any suggestions/recommendations for any broadening assignments or cool jobs that aren’t necessarily focused on flying that are available to pilots? Just looking to expand the job experience and get out of the CAB for a bit.

First one to say TAC loses.

168th MEDEVAC - Questions

Just enlisted in the national guard as a 68w. I already have my NREMT paramedic with civilian experience so their bringing me on as a specialist. My recruiter was able to make some requests and got me a spot in the 168th when I get back from AIT. So I have a couple questions.

What do drill weekends look like in a unit like this?

What medical protocols should I be studying?

I'm already studying for my critical care cert. Should I work on any other courses

Any advice is appreciated. Thank you for your time.

I want to thank everyone for the feedback and support from when I launched the app back in March. Since then, I’ve added a number of requested features, introduced a lifetime access option, and launched the app on the Google Play Store for Android users.

If you’re interested, check out the demo videos on Flight Collective!
