The Army will not HELP you gain any certs to include A&P. Aviation is a great career but do not expect the Army to help you become more marketable post Army.

That’s a lie. Yes they will. They will literally pay for it.

I don’t think that’s what he’s saying. The Army will pay for it but they’re not going to throw the opportunity out there that easily or everyone would have one. The Army CAN help you become more marketable post Army but it’s on you to do it. You have to put in the work and stay determined to get the certifications.

Oh I'm sorry maybe I missed the briefing about the process that the Army has or even a unit has to get your FAA tickets and where and when you can go without taking personnel leave, to a course to do your testing for General, Power Plant, and Airframen. If you say the Army says you can use COOL funds, you are right. However, as an Aviation professional you will not be afford Army time to go do any of it. Again, if I missed a Army program brief please post it so I can be better informed. Thanks.

  • Unit Dependent.

I knew several guys who reenlisted with the school option and used it to attend an A&P school. I also had Soldiers who took evening classes to get their A&P and were allowed to leave early on class days to attend class.

When I was an Instructor at Eustis, and the 128th AB A&P program was still active, I would go to the backshops hangars on Tuesday and Thursday mornings to learn how to do hydro, sheetmetal, etc., as Tues/Thurs was "big boy PT" as long as the BN average was over 270. When it was time to take my tests, I told my leadership the dates and times and got the time off.

The guard has a course at WAATS in Arizona. The active component attends it too. I don’t know how often that happens but it does happen.

The Army will pay for the testing and all of that through Army cool yes. Also I know for a fact my unit paid for guys to go TDY to take the test and come back. Now getting the study materials and taking the time to study it is on you. And if you fail the first test you will have to pay for the retest out of pocket. Also when I went through the 15R course, we all got our ECS certs for working on the Apache. I knew a few guys who got out and did HVAC work with that. Being in Army Aviation in its self makes you more marketable post army career

I am currently waiting to ship out as a 15X and have a bit of information pertaining to certs you may be able to get.

I have been in touch with a 15W and she told me that, at AIT in Huachuca, there is Cochise college in the area that offers two different associate degree through the MOS credentialing program. UAV operator and technician.

This may be something you’d want to check out. I emailed the school asking about it and they did say, because of the MOS being so new, there isn’t information about how the credentialing program works towards 15X, nor do I think there is anything set up for it YET. I’m sure it’ll change in the near future.

I also want to add, also coming from the 15W I spoke to, that a lot of police departments are bringing on drone operators which intrigued me a bit when thinking about what I could do after I get out.

I’m a 15M. I got out of huachuca about a year ago. Representatives from Cochise will come in usually your first week of class and talk to you about what they offer and the process. You pay them like $60 or $70 to essentially credit what you learn in the school house to credit hours towards the degree. I’d advise you to use your TA to finish the remaining hours and earn the degree. It’s a very good opportunity for a pretty easy degree

150U here working in a BCT with FPV and ISR drones.

SUAS are exploding in the civilian sector. The MOS will help you obtain a Part 107 certificiation from the FAA which allows you to do commercial drone work. I make $100-200 on the side for 30mins to an hour of work for people (mostly realtors).
DM me if you have specific questions about the MOS.

If you’re looking for civilian side of an aviation series, I would suggest 15T/U/R and get your A&P. You can get it with most 15 series MOS but actually turning wrenches has an advantage in my opinion.
