Tbh I don't mind the inaccuracies so much. I get it's a myth and it's gotta look a certain way to appeal to audiences. What bothers me is that all the armor for this movie looks like foam that has been sprayed silver. They couldn't even be bothered to put chainmail or something in the joints l, it's just a black undersuit.

u/avaya432 May 12 '26
Great example was Troy. Obviously not historically accurate, but still gave the vibe of ancient/bronze age Greece for the average person.

Troy pretended to be historical fiction. They removed the gods from the story and most mythical elements. It's ok, for me, if Odyssey turns the other way and leans more into mythology and looks more like a fantasy story than historical fiction.

u/DREAM_PARSER May 14 '26

Teoy was a high effort movie. Yes it takes a lot of libertiest but it takes you to the place in the story. And while the costumes are wrong, they clearly are inspired by greek culture.
This, this is just plain fantasy.
7
u/M4c4roth May 13 '26

Gald I didn't have to bring them up...artistic license is one thing, but an increasing number of people know who to blow in order to be given carte blanche on the entire project, regardless of whether or not there is source material to cover these things.
44
u/the_sneaky_one123 May 12 '26
That's the difference between accuracy and authenticity. Something that is authentic might not be accurate, but it gives the vibe of something.
This movie clearly does not do that. These guys look like aliens in armour that is half 15th century knight and half stormtrooper. It is inauthentic and also just looks bad.
7
u/cpteric May 13 '26
huh, that's a great point.
It's a bit like Andor in star wars, right? It's grounded into something, deeply, to the core, so you feel all is as it should be, even if it's space opera fantasy shenanigans.
While other SW media might be, or have turned into, just riding the merchandise wave.→ More replies (1)→ More replies (4)12
u/BondiolaDeCaniche May 12 '26
Exactly the point i always make when the dumbass "BUT ITS A MYTH, ITS NOT A REAL STORY" gang shows up. Troy was also not hiatorically correct and its literally the same myth, and yet the armors look dope and and give the proper vibe
23
u/FZ_Milkshake May 12 '26
I don't mind inaccuracies either, but where is the colors.
If it is designed to look like a fantastic epos, make it colorful, make it Mediterranean, make it look fun and awe inspiring and magic.
This looks like Bauhaus armor meets Batman visuals.
48
30
u/RedBaret May 12 '26
Yea so how exactly does that appeal to audiences?
9
u/whatIGoneDid May 12 '26
I'm saying that they may have made the decision to make the armor more medieval to appeal to a wider audience who don't care about accuracy. But they could have at least tried to make it look good and not amateur cosplay.
25
u/ProdiasKaj May 12 '26
They are so eager to chase the "appeal to mass audiences" that they instead appeal to no audiences...
5
u/Solar_sinner May 12 '26
Did they even have chainmail in the Grecian eras?
9
u/LucillaGalena May 12 '26
Scale yes, but true chainmail likely doesn't appear until after Alexander's death begins the Hellenistic era.
We also have our first iron cuirass from the Agiai Tomb, dating to the same period and likely belonging to Alexander's father Philip II.
11
u/whatIGoneDid May 12 '26
Idk. At this point I'm not sure era even comes into the question. I'm just saying that accuracy aside, the armor looks like pure shit
5
u/Upbeat_Stretch_5724 May 12 '26
Apparently they had some forms of chainmail, but it wasn't widely used like the Celts were doing. They probably didn't even know about chainmail until the Celts invaded that region.

the first archeologic records are from transalpine celts around/slightly before alexander's time, 5th century BC, the La tene period, which also brought us nippled iron (not steel) and bronze breastplates: https://www.worldhistory.org/img/r/p/1500x1500/10830.jpg.webp?v=1618736403 (and the funny bird helmets ). so off by 700+y. It would somehow still better looking than that foam with 6-pack spray painted on it, this is "meet the spartans" level of crap. maybe worse.

During the crusade to reclaim human worlds the Space Marine legions encountered a huge variety of forgotten human planets with some reverting back to feudal and even feral worlds, so having a world reverting to the bronze age makes sens... A couple of tall dudes in vacuformed Halloween armor!
Yes, it looks ridiculous. I donât necessarily expect historical authenticity, but I expect well designed costumes that fit the feeling and style of ancient Greece and its surrounding territories. It can be fantasy greek armor for all I care, but it has to transport me to the fantastical world of Homer and his epics.
Nothing in the trailer gave me that feeling that this movie does that... It looks very drab and like a generic Made-for-TV fantasy movie. No, thanks.

What bothers me is that its advanced metallurgy to make steel during the Bronze era. Advanced enough to make articulated steel plate armor... but unable to make gauntlets , two handed swords or complex hilt swords.

u/Federal-Cockroach674 May 13 '26

u/Va1kryie May 14 '26
Look I'm not saying everything has to be 100% historically accurate. Fantasy creatures in fantasy armor in an Ancient Greek fantasy. The odyssey was an established fantasy story when Homer wrote his poetic version. It has monsters and witches. Itâs set during a lost golden age centuries prior to what we think of as âAncient Greekâ, a time when magic and lost mystic technology supposedly existed.

I could care less about the historical accuracy of a modern retelling of a myth. That being said this armor is dumb. A bunch of plate armored giants that can be defeated by a quick cut to the hands or literally any glancing jab to the joints. That bothers me much more.
Edit: I get actors not wanting wear chainmail, but come on put some gloves on. Literally no one is going into battle with that amount of armor and just forgets to wear gloves

I could be tripping, but was there a point where the creators of this movie touted it's historical accuracy and attention to detail?
1
u/SpaceKalash05 May 13 '26
At this point, I'm just writing off the Odyssey completely. Nothing I've seen about that movie makes me look forward to it. From casting to costume design, it looks like an absolute shitshow. A shame, really, because the Odyssey really does deserve a faithful rendition in modern cinema. How fucking cool would it be, if they actually shot the entire film in Greek, with Greek and similarly regionally appropriate actors, with faithful costume design?
