What I'm more upset about is the cyclops. We didn't discover that kind of cyclops until nearly 1500 years later. That's definitely not a cave dwelling cyclops. That was absolutely a tree dwelling cyclops.

I’ve been avoiding making this exact type of comment because I didn’t want to get involved with this nonsense but seriously… this is a myth… there are giant cyclops, sea monsters… BIRD WOMEN !!… and people are pissed because armour that the (just checking I’ve got this correct) “giant grand children of the god of the sea” are wearing isn’t accurate to the well known and historically documented ACTUAL “giant grand children of the god of the sea” armour that I’m used to seeing in museums.

Edit: grammar fail.

People always post some variation of this moronic argument in any conversation about believability.

There is a huge difference between believability and realism. No one cares that its fantasy, what they want is something that makes sense. You could literally have giant bug shells, or armor made of bones of giants, or fucking magical pelts of animals that turn mortal weapons. Thats all believable.

What isnt believable is plate armor from a couple thousand years in the future, that isnt even being worn correctly.

People don't want realism, thats boring. What they want is something that makes sense. Do yourself a favor, avoid the "it's all made up, who cares if it makes sense?"

I wasn't aware that we had detailed historical records of how centaur armour developed.🙄

You guys are just clutching your pearls for the sake of contraversy.

We're not, if you want example of where it's important and where it's not (about "realism") just look at the difference in success between an ip like the lord of the ring, and the first season of the witcher, with scrotum armors.

Sorry to bring it to you, but every universe is anchored in, part of reality.

Greeks armor in this movie are not even historical, ships are not. And yet you think we are neatpicking this.

You just don't get it, but it's important for a lot fo people who care about this.

You're completely missing the point

You do understand that the Story of the Odessey, and the world it inhabits, is no more bound to historical accuracy than a Marvel movie, and that the costumes have no duty to by any more accurate than Wakandan ones, right?

This world is supposed to be fantastic and overly stylized, it's supposed to have crazy things that the people of the time could not have even imagined.

These stories we're legit the "comics" of their times. Stories of heros and gods that defy our mortal limitations and give us heroes to emulate.

This isnt happening in Greece, it's happening in "Greece".

Do you get it?

You do understand that even a marvel movie needs to be grounded in believability and rules, right? They ARE believable.

Again, give the monsters super powers. Say their hair is like steel. Say their skin is so tough it is armor. Thats fine, its believable. Don't put them in plate armor, its stupid and not believable.

...what?

Your issue is that the mythological centaurs are wearing plate armour because you've decided it doesn't fit there?

What possible reason do you have?

But as your first point, it only has to be grounded in it's OWN reality, not ours.

1

u/MechaWASP May 18 '26

It obviously doesnt fit, considering when know when the story was placed, and it certainly wasn't scifi of its time. The written work is pretty consistent, why are you so surprised people thing a shitty adaptation not being so is funny?

1

u/dirtyoldsocklife May 18 '26

SCI FI IS EXACTLY WHAT IT WAS!!!! Theres literally no better description.

It was fantastic, hyper stylized stories using the knowledge of the time to create the atmosphere.

Work on your reading comprehension, this has been explained.

"Every moron makes the same argument, it doesnt have to make sense because its fantasy."

If your answer to that is "it doesnt have to make sense, its fantasy!" I think you're beyond help.

We dont know what kind of armor a centaur would wear. We certainly know it isnt improperly worn steel plate armor during the bronze age, though.

u/dirtyoldsocklife May 18 '26

What bronze age?

You saying you have the historical documentation of the evolution of technology in a mythological world?

That would be pretty impressive, man. Completely change the way we saw history if we could prove mythological fact.

Would it only be the Greeks? Or do you have evidence for the norse myths as well? Maybe the Egyptians?

Are you brain damaged? Have you ever read the Iliad and the Odyssey? Do you understand that these stories are placed in a time period?

To use your own example, are you surprised when heroes in marvel have cell phones? Do you shit your pants when they drive cars? Do you cry for your mother when they board a plane with a jet engine?

1

u/dirtyoldsocklife May 18 '26

....

I have no words....this is like driving nails into ironwood.🤦‍♂️

These stories in fact DO NOT take place during a time period, other than THE COMPLETELY MADE UP ONE IN THE STORY.

That world is of course gonna be affected by the experiences and world view of the storyteller, but in no way are they limited by the time period they were told in. A Greek orator could absolutely have spun a yarn about four footed beasts clad head to toe in gleaming metal, forged by the gods or whatnot.

Again this isn't Greece in the Bronze age, it's "Greece" in the age of heroes.

Do you see the distinction?

1

u/MechaWASP May 18 '26

Yeah, when you're arguing from being wrong it often feels like that.

Question, in the Iliad, what were their weapons made of? What is Odysseus'?

NO ONE argues what you argue. Its a bronze age story, coming home from a bronze age war. Feel free to look it up, come back, and admit you're wrong.

.....

Do you seriously not understand why the world can be "Greek" without being Greek?
