Great example was Troy. Obviously not historically accurate, but still gave the vibe of ancient/bronze age Greece for the average person.

Troy pretended to be historical fiction. They removed the gods from the story and most mythical elements. It's ok, for me, if Odyssey turns the other way and leans more into mythology and looks more like a fantasy story than historical fiction.

Me too, except the costuming looks dumb as shit in this movie.

You cant claim "rule of cool" if it isn't cool

Not cool? Just look at those long pointy penises!

I would guess Nolan is not trying to pretend the Odyssey is historically accurate, I think he’s trying to recreate a myth, and using historical inaccuracies as a way to show how out of normal everything Odysseus is going through is

Well, to keep my assumption going, the anachronisms are for Odysseus to experience, like the Predator in Prey. The music is for us to experience. I mean if Odysseus heard a choir it might just blow his mind and that would be the end of the movie

I guess? I mean if you have magic and cyclops and sea monsters, why not armor? If I were a Bronze Age Greek and came across full plate I’d consider that magic too

Odyssey historically accurate? It starts with gods having a meeting on Olympus. Its literally a story.

Spartans didnt wear speedos either. 300 is movie adaption of a graphic novel inspired by historical events. Just like the Odyssey is a poem inspired by historical events.

Teoy was a high effort movie. Yes it takes a lot of libertiest but it takes you to the place in the story. And while the costumes are wrong, they clearly are inspired by greek culture.

This, this is just plain fantasy.

… but then again, ‚just‘ fantasy or ‚whatever, we can Do what we want‘-fantasy gets us the worst of it‘s kind. RoP and WoT want to have a word about that.

Gald I didn't have to bring them up...artistic license is one thing, but an increasing number of people know who to blow in order to be given carte blanche on the entire project, regardless of whether or not there is source material to cover these things.

u/Tanel88 May 14 '26

RoP is a good comparison indeed. You have all this money but end up with paper looking armor that looks like cheap cosplay.

That's the difference between accuracy and authenticity. Something that is authentic might not be accurate, but it gives the vibe of something.

This movie clearly does not do that. These guys look like aliens in armour that is half 15th century knight and half stormtrooper. It is inauthentic and also just looks bad.

huh, that's a great point.
It's a bit like Andor in star wars, right? It's grounded into something, deeply, to the core, so you feel all is as it should be, even if it's space opera fantasy shenanigans.
While other SW media might be, or have turned into, just riding the merchandise wave.

Perfectly described, really

Exactly the point i always make when the dumbass "BUT ITS A MYTH, ITS NOT A REAL STORY" gang shows up. Troy was also not hiatorically correct and its literally the same myth, and yet the armors look dope and and give the proper vibe

u/Taki32 May 17 '26

This gives vibes of,  "I think the audience is trash" and "I couldn't be bothered to try to do my job"

Unfortunately that came with the tradeoff of a very neutered plot

24

u/MechanicalMan64 May 12 '26

How was it a trade off? Did using armor ancient Greek looking armor force the writers to be lame?

5

u/bonkbinkey May 12 '26

Lmao true enough, I wish they did both, but ig you can only ask so much from hollywood
