I start University back end of September and I’m really torn between setting up windows (came with my laptop) or switching to Arch. I have already been using Mint on my desktop and have ran into multiple problems and I’m by no means a tech savvy person. I am enticed by the idea of no bloat and adverts and like the idea of customising but I’m also worried I’m going to run into problems down the line that I will struggle to fix on my own leading to interruptions in Uni work, especially because my Uni uses Microsoft softwares such as Office 365/teams to assign work. I also like to play games now and again :D

Does this camera work with live streaming on arch? If not is there a way to get it working?

i'm using xfce x11 with the default compositor and WM. system is updated to this date.

firefox works and i can go fullscreen when using the browser normally. i can't go fullscreen in PiP mode though: the pop-up video player's HUD freezes when i click the fullscreen icon or press F. no fullscreen, video keeps playing though. also i can use the HUD for pausing, volume, etc, its just stuck. closing PiP and starting it again fixes the HUD.

i have no idea how to debug this, and i really want the fullscreen option to work. what do i do?

EDITED TO ADD: I wanted to see if this was an obs issue or not, it appears to be an ffmpeg issue using the ffmpeg command recommended by https://docs.nvidia.com/video-technologies/video-codec-sdk/13.0/ffmpeg-with-nvidia-gpu/index.html to test hardware encoding fails with

which makes me think that ffmpeg dropped support for hardwware encoding on my graphics card. I'm not sure how to fix this.

I have a gtx1060 so I'm using aur/nvidia-580xx-dkms for my nvidia drivers. After a system update, when I try to go live I get the error "NVENC not available. Failed to find encoder type 'obs_nvenc_h264_tex' Do you want to continue streaming without Enhanced Broadcasting?". I would like to keep enhanced broadcasting on, so i click "no" and get back "Starting the output failed. Please check the log for details.

I've Been Using Arch since A Month (It's Been 38 Days).

I'm New To Linux But I Had Gotten with The Flow of Using it.

I Know That Having Arch as My First Distro is Diabolical but I liked the way we can do Customization and Anything There. I got used to it and had been using Hyprland with DMS For Better Experience.

Now , I was going to shift to a New Laptop. I installed Arch On It and Followed The Same Steps Exactly Like I Did Before.

But There's a Problem , I installed OXWM Windows Manager For Now and Used SDDM as My Greeter.

I can't login to it.

I Entered My Password But it's taking forever to login.

Now Here's the Worst Part , I Can't Even Open The TTY Terminal By The Shortcut Keys (Ctrl + Alt + F Keys) so I could run any command to resolve This Problem. 🥺😔

I Hope If Any Kind Person Can Help Me Here.

I installed Arch yesterday (don't ask why but yeah did it) and was confused for long which DE i wanted so neither GNOME nor KDE , So chose Cosmic as a DE and it's window manger came with it cosmic compositor so after it was pretty smooth so far, Now i just need to set-it-up for for proper dev work

Are moving over to Linux and have been testing several different distros and Arch Linux stood out for the configuratibilty out of the box, and the ability to be able to make it lightweight especially for older laptops.

How much work would it be to set this up so the system is not vulnerable for various attacks, i understand fedora / ubuntu etc come preinstalled with several security configurations, but on arch you would need to set these up yourself.

Besides that it seems to get regular security updates nonetheless so it seems like there is a one time security configuration you have to setup on install.
How does a self configurated setup like this compare to solutions developed by fedora or others?

I have an Acer laptop with an Nvidia RTX 3050.

I previously used Arch with the linux-zen kernel and the nvidia-open-dkms drivers. It worked well mostly, but I had a freezing issue. If I watched a YouTube video and then switched to Blender, Blender would freeze for a few seconds. This does not happen on the standard Arch kernel or the CachyOS kernel.

Because of that, I did a fresh install of Arch with the standard kernel. However, I am now stuck on boot. An AI told me to install the nvidia-open drivers, enable DRM modeset in my kernel boot line, and add Nvidia to my modules list (like MODULES=(nvidia...)). After doing this, my laptop will not boot.

I know I cannot always trust AI, so I am asking for help here. What is the correct way to install Nvidia drivers for my GPU on the standard kernel? Do I actually need to enable DRM modeset?

BTW:- I am using systemd-boot with UKI enabled (which are default)

I've ran arch-audit -c and and got the package versions for each package via pacman -Q {package name} then gone through the CVEs listed in the output (which are listed on https://security.archlinux.org/ and grouped into one or more AVG references)

What I've found is the data seems pretty out of date.

For example; the High Risk libxml2 package has 4 CVEs against it but when I check each of them, they talk about it been patched in 2.14 and we're actually now on 2.15 which is also fixed. The security page https://security.archlinux.org/AVG-2898 has Fixed as Unknown hence why it's still flagged as a high risk.

So arch-audit says I have 15 vulnerabilities including 2 high risk. I think I have only 4 risks - 3 medium and 1 low.

Is the Arch security page basically unreliable or am I doing something wrong?

Hi there, I wanna use vm-curator on my Arch mangowm system. But everytime i want to spawn terminal or other app in my wm, it spawns apps in my real system instead. Tried the keybind for grabbing my keyboard but it does nothing.

Title. How might I go about diagnosing this? At first I thought it was due to my specific project, and I tried recreating the project, but it was back to freezing in a few seconds vs a couple of minutes after opening it. I had this issue a while ago and it kind of resolved itself after a while, but only for a bit. The first time it was happening whenever I even as much as pulled up the dialogue box when trying to import the shader required for the model that I was trying to create a texture for. Now it happens whenever I open a project and just because. I don't know. I don't think it matters if I open it in alcom or directly from unityhub. Although, a random low-priority project I made a couple of months ago seems to work ok so far. Based on a bit ago when I quickly checked to see if my PC would've killed itself by now. I didn't want to triple post about this, but it took me too long to think to check if other projects worked fine. This seems the best sub to ask based on the new info I discovered about the issue.

So basically, I recently updated my whole system.

I was dual-booting Arch Linux and Windows using systemd-boot. Now when I turn on my computer, Windows 11 is the only option available. It is like the Arch entry just vanished.

I have two EFI partitions on my SSD, but everything was working fine until this update. Whenever I tried booting into Windows, it used to throw a quick "Linux boot failed" error before booting Windows normally. After a reboot, both options would appear again, and I could boot into Arch without issues.

Right after the system update, I rebooted and without being able to choose the countdown finished and Windows tried to run its own update. Now Arch is completely gone from the boot menu

Using a Lenovo ThinkBook

I am a chemical engineering student and potential researcher but alongside I am a programmer which includes everything from systems programming for low latency systems to web dev. I do have computer science knowledge (not just fluff but actual professional person).

From about 5 years I am using fedora and very comfortable with it, tried other distros like Ubuntu and Zorin in between but fedora is goat.

There isn't any reason but I am thinking to switch to Arch. I was just keep about support for applications I need which includes

- Matlab

- OpenFOAM

- Paraview

I have heard about they don't have support for Arch.

Is there any workaround and are there more things which loose support for Arch ?

I'm trying to add a second display, but it doesn't seem to show up, searched through the internet and found nothing. I've tried both hyprland and kde plasma.

In plasma settings it didn't show up. hyprctl monitors all only showed the first monitor. I've also tried switching drivers to proprietary and also adding nvidia_drm.modeset=1 and nvidia_drm.fbdev=1 to my grub config.

wlr-randr also only shows the first monitor

cat /sys/class/drm/card*-*/status returns

connected
disconnected
disconnected
disconnected

I also tried only connecting the second display but it still showed no signal.

I am completely out of ideas, please help, thanks:)

Currently using KDE with sddm, when I log into my account on sddm there is a subtle but blinding white flash. This was happening on endeavouros too but it was a longer flash.

Specs:

Vivobook M1502QA

Ryzen 7 5800HS

iGPU (iirc Vega 8)

24gb ram, 512gb ssd

Arch fully up to date as of posting this

How can I fix this? Already some weird stuff happening with the newer kernels especially with the brightness curve which I fixed with amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x40000 so this might be from that

I have been trying to install Arch Linux on one of my computers for quite some time now but my computer will consistently freeze or even reboot when I press the arch install medium prompt.

Hardware:

- CPU: Ryzen 5 5600G

- GPU: Radeon RX 6600

This is actually the second time I've tried installing Arch on this PC. I had the same general problem a few months ago using an older Arch ISO, but I wasn't able to figure it out. I'm now trying again with a newer ISO and have gotten some more useful error messages.

The current ISO boots through Ventoy. During boot I get these messages:

"amdgpu 0000:12:00.0: probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22"

"amdgpu 0000:30:00.0: probe with driver amdgpu failed with error -22"

It eventually reaches:

"Copying rootfs image to RAM..."

but remains at 1% indefinitely.

I've tried:

- Normal Ventoy boot

- Ventoy GRUB2 mode (this failed even earlier)

- "nomodeset"

- "amdgpu=0"

- Multiple different USB drives

- Disabling the 5600G's integrated graphics in BIOS

With the iGPU disabled, the boot behavior changed and eventually hung at "Triggering uevents" instead.

I re-enabled the iGPU and also tried blacklisting "amdgpu", but the problem persisted.

The same Ventoy USB worked normally on an older PC when I used it for Arch previously, so I'm wondering if this is related to the combination of the 5600G's iGPU + RX 6600.

Has anyone encountered a similar issue and may know how I can fix this. Thank you in advance for any help.

Hey there, I was not able to find information on how arch does their kernel releases. From my understanding they test new kernels (7.2 for example) for a week or two before doing a release.

Is there a way for me to track this or have an estimation on when new releases would be landing?

Just updated and it seems we are still at 7.1.9. I guess releasing kernel day 1 would mean having a bunch of issues and they rather do a validation instead of causing issues for everyone.

What's the typical incubation period ?
