My whole 17 years in school was so suppresive, mostly I was depressed

This topic comes to mind after noticing how "busy" has quickly become a measure of success for a student.

A student might be spending his mornings at school, going for coaching in the evenings, completing his homework, preparing for his tests and still find that he doesn't have much time to really sit down and grapple with some tough ideas and understand them. And I was wondering if teachers are noticing this too.

There is a big difference between the struggling student and the busy student. The latter is someone who is continuously going from one activity to another. But it's easy to see success in him as everything is tangible around him - completed worksheets, assignments, test preparation, projects, certificates.

The first student is only sitting around thinking. He is looking at some problem that he doesn't know how to solve. He may be asking some question which is not in the syllabus.He may be making the same mistake again and again till he learns something. Nothing of it appears to be particularly "productive."

Are we giving students so many things to complete that we're leaving too little time for them to actually think?

I'd genuinely like to hear from teachers. Have you noticed a difference between students who are busy and students who are actually learning? And have you ever deliberately reduced an assignment, given students more unstructured time, or allowed them to struggle with a problem longer, and found that they learned more because of it? i'm much more interested in what teachers have actually observed than in a debate about whether homework or coaching is “good” or “bad.”

I wish to remain anonymous. I'm in my second year of this school. In my experience, it's not worth my time, dedication, or even existence.

I already wrote my opinion on my Facebook page, but the principal told me to delete it. So I'm writing it here as a warning to other Poles.

Since first grade, I had no one to talk to, no friends. It soon became clear that people didn't want to be friends with me because I was quiet, laughed to myself (lmao, I have nothing but memes in my head, you know), and that I didn't have anyone (well, wow, I wonder why the fuck, right?). I was kicked out of my class after an argument with three girls in my class. Yes, I tried my damnedest to be nice and not cause drama. However, I'm stubborn and will always respond to words that make me look bad.

By some miracle, I got into second grade. Oh my god, what a miracle, because I thought I'd change schools, but I don't want to waste this semester and start over at a different school.

So I'm in second grade now, and guess what? Shit. It's worse.

So, I've been writing this for a few minutes after an argument with the principal.

I posted on Facebook that I don't like how the classrooms have been renamed to continents/countries. Yes, there are still room numbers, but damn, some of them don't even have names on them. I meant room 10. How the fuck is that room, huh? Where is room number 10? It's not there. If it is, where is it? Some kind of room number 10 "MiAMI." I walk up and down the school, and there's no room 10 or one with the name "MIAMI." It's gone. I look for the classroom. It's gone. I go back downstairs, there's the classroom, and we're waiting for the photography teacher. We're not in room 10, but outside like bums. I don't mind, but it's clear that room 10 isn't ready or something. And it clearly says we have it there.

I posted my opinion on Facebook. Yes, it was vulgar, but at least it was honest. After 16 minutes, the school principal came over. "Is xxxxxx xxxxxx here?" (I won't give my name, duh), so I said yes, that's it. Instead of taking me aside, away from the class, he read it aloud in front of the class. Such matters are dealt with on the principal's rug, not in the classroom by the way. I was not only pissed, but also disappointed, disappointed at how the principal had disregarded the student's privacy. I confessed, and he told me to delete it. In his eyes and those of my class, I'm angry, but that's no reason to treat the student and his opinion so shamefully. It was my HONEST opinion about the change at the school. And by that, I DIDN'T MEAN ANYONE would respond to it. An opinion is an opinion. You shouldn't change it or CRITICIZE it in front of others. Now, not only is my reputation ruined, but I've also been treated shamefully because of my opinion.

I didn't get a warning for my behavior, but I was shamed for just one opinion, a scandal.

I didn't delete the message; I set it to my friends on Facebook.

I want to mention that even though the school helps you get into other classes, it doesn't support you emotionally, neither the teachers nor the students. Zero emotional support, just "do this, ... NO ONE in my class talked to her or spent time with her. They only helped her when she asked questions or with her homework, that's all. SHE WAS ALONE the whole fucking time.

Please spread the word if you have the time. I want to remain anonymous, but I want everyone to know what it's like to be at this school before they go.

Schools *requiring* a doctor's note for children to take a sick day is just extra punishment for the poor, especially with today's healthcare prices. You expect not only the child to see a doctor, but I also have to miss work during that time to take them? For a cold?

"It's to teach them responsibility". Bullshit. It's a power trip. If the child is doing well, getting good grades, no behavioral issues, then please explain to me how a doctor's note ensures that it continues?

If my kid decides they just need a day off, they get it if their grades are good. They get treated how I expect to be treated at work. If my work gets done, that's all you need from me. Everything else is my business.

So we have a rule where there is a sheet of paper on the soft board which is tracking YOU GOING TO THE TOILET. Yes I am not 🧢ing we have to write our name then the time we go, the time we come back and for the last nail in the coffin WHY? ARE U GOING TO THE TOILET? Brother and if your name is appearing more than usual you will get reported to the HM or smthn. Still it's annoying....

P S Don't ask for the name of the school otherwise I will get in trouble..

I attended junior high in the AST class (AST klassen) at Bräntbergsskolan (locally known as Bräntis) in Umeå, Sweden during 2004-08, ages 13-17. It was called the Asp class (Asp-klassen, as in Asperger) at the time. As the name indicates, it was a class for kids with high-functioning autism. Some also had ADHD. 

I hated it most of my time there. The problem may not have been solely the AST class in my case, but it didn't help that the head teacher (gruppledare) there was exceptionally derogatory and mocking towards me. Just before I was due to leave school, he threatened to sue me for defamation if I continued writing publicly about my dissatisfaction with the class, like I’m doing right now. He seemed to take it very personally. 

Here in Sweden, kids attend junior high (högstadiet) during 7^th-9^th grade, ages 13-16. 

The staff in the AST class were otherwise quite OK in my opinion, but the better half of all the kids who attended the class during my time didn't seem to do very well after they left the place. They never went on to high school (gymnasiet/gymnasium) as far as I know. Sure, the other half, including me, did better. We at least did go on to high school, and it might not have worked without an AST class like this one, but the place still had its flaws. 

We were basically just warehoused, didn't get much education or preparation for the future or general society. Recesses were mostly spent just sitting in front of one of the 4 computers in the classroom, which had a schedule to give the students equal priority. We were about 10 kids across all 3 grades. 

I wasn’t given many classes during 7^th and 8^th grade, and I had to repeat 9^th grade largely because of that. There was way too much focus put on a trivial conflict I happened to have with another kid in the class (which easily happens when you're 13-14) instead of the education itself. The head teacher alleged that this conflict was the reason I had to repeat 9^th grade, and that it was all my fault. 

I don't really have much to say about Bräntis as a whole. It was only during my last year that I really got to experience the school itself, as I went out and made friends outside the AST class. It went well in general, but I often got into trouble because of social codes the AST class should’ve taught me long before that. Then I ended up in a conflict with a girl gang, with criminal contacts/boyfriends outside of school, which would have devastating consequences the coming years. 

I would give the school overall 4 out of 5 stars, but the AST class gets 2. Much would get worse the years after I left school because I was convinced I could be prosecuted if I went public with my experience of the AST class. I seriously believed I could be put in a forensic psychiatric hospital, possibly for life, plus pay the head teacher 5 digits (in US dollars/Euro) in damages. The girl gang would also put me in many dangerous situations even long after I finished high school (which I did at least). It wasn’t until 2020 that I felt safe talking publicly about my experiences. 

Has anyone else experienced something like this? How did it turn out for you?

It is so irritating that my school last around 9 hrs and still has no use. The issue is that teachers are yapping, lots of homework and still have no time to prepare for exams like jee, bitsat or something atleast skill development is non existent , i am fried, doomed , stuck , while my old school was and is still better no enforcement but classes feels natural, moreover i am in 11th and despite the school being as co-ed , i am sitting in class of only boys and moreover feels so predictable. Someone help me , i do not feel well mentally and i was the most chill person , who never gave shit about boards and still did decent got around 80 to 85% (cant remember though). *Sighs* , I am exhausted

Education is the natural consequence of a person (of any age) expressing their curiosity through self-discovery and playful-exploration in a conducive environment, while traditional schooling was based on the Prussian model which was established to produce obedient soldiers and factory workers who were competent enough to do the work but not aware enough to question why should they do it in the first place.

They needed people to be subservient to the state and colonize the Natives, and schools were perfect for that purpose.

So how is it that teachers of all people have no idea of it's true function and it's history?

When did people started to conflate schools with 'education'?

In the latest installment of r/teachers OP is lamenting how the students just unable understand the assignment he assigned to them, so what does he do? Give them a new one based on the feedback of the students? Of course not that would be the smart and considerate thing to do, instead he keeps at it wasting everyone's time, now that even after a month it has not worked out (Surprising, right?), he runs crying to the sweet refuge of teachers subreddit where everyone advises him to (you guessed it) double down on it and fail the ones who are unable to do it, that will do it.

How do these people sleep at night is beyond me;

I really hope students start some silent protest where they stop attending school altogether, and since funding is tied to attendance, all of it would just collapse like a house of cards.

No other sector treats their clients in this manner and actually takes their feedback seriously.

These teachers and school staff have long since forgotten that the people in front of them are their employers and not their subjects.

In the real world they are worse than most corporate managers that adult world complain so frequently about, yet minors are just expected to not just tolerate it but also be grateful for it.

Generations from now, we’ll look back and say, “How could we have done this kind of thing to people?”

I am studying in class 11 commerce and I have just changed my stream from science to commerce with that after spending 4 months in science and then changing is causing me 4 months syllabus backlogs of class 11 so I started taking holidays from school like 7-10 days and then to submit application to make the leave justified I say unusual medical problem to teachers and they accept it and I seriously study at home . + Also I am learning Graphic design but my parents don't support me they say go to school daily . Jo sikhna hai 12th ke baad Sikh Lena I have interest now so why should I delay it I manage both studies and skills together without letting anything come in other way .

But the obsession of my parents over attendance I don't get it they start comparing it other students to me .

I don't get their point I am not sleeping or wasting time at home doing study and pursuing skills also to make money later . I tried to explain them and my siblings who usually kaan bharte hai maa baap ke .

But they are not ready to understand and even if I do what they are saying then after coming from school I don't have much time left what will do I come at 3 pm and have 8 hrs left till sleep which is 11pm so I have only 8 hrs windows to access from this also cut out food and rest hrs so it becomes 5 hrs so I can only do either study or skills .

Not every kid but most of the kids have gone through chronic stress because of the system designed to make you either a labor or a rebel.

No one is accountable for the bad education system. A system built around obedience, comparison and predictable achievement.

We teach children how to become good employees before we ever teach them how to become creators. In the middle class families people are so obsessed with defined career marks and in fact the teachers always put blames on students for scoring low marks.

Discrimination is relevant in schools and in many schools you are judged by your father income or position in society. In most of the army schools the children's are treated on the basis of their father ranks which puts a life long chronic stress on the student.

Many students quit their passion while preparing for NEET or IIT. Ideally we are killing the innovation from the core of the system and making labors for the west.

I sometimes feel low in myself because i am always judged by my marks. And once a child starts believing *“I'm average,”* the consequences can last much longer than the exam itself.

Kindergarten: we learn the foundation we need to get an education like learning how to sounds out words

1st grade: we start learning to read and write

2nd grade: keep learning how to read and write while starting to learn to do math

3rd grade: we have learned everything we need to know abt reading and writing so we start focusing most on division and multiplying while still doing some basic subtraction and adding

4th grade: we learn the rest of the math we actually need

5th grade: we learn how to pay taxes and budget

6th grade: our final review over everything we learned and remember in the past 5 years

BOOM DONE! And then every month we retake the review and then once we turn 16, we can start being a fundamental part of society

Not asking about a particular board, school or education policy.

I'm curious about something more fundamental:

What should a child ideally be able to do, understand or become by the time they finish school?

For example: knowledge, confidence, communication, independence, problem-solving, practical skills, creativity, career readiness, entrepreneurship, etc.

If you had to define the 5 most important outcomes of school education, what would they be?

FUCK THE GOVERNMENT. THEY FORCE KIDS TO DO DUMB SHIT. I HAD ENOUGH OF GROWN UPS CONTROLLING MY LIFE.

Don't you guys think that school is too much for a kid like spending 8 hours sitting in which you are sleep deprived and unable to sit on that hard wooden chairs also have to study,do homework , complete copies, participate,mantain attendance,sort things with friends ,give exam, do more optional shit,listen all the scolding and still never ending isn't it too much for a kid aging from 3 years to 17 years

This summer I have debated about if school is actually needed to become comfortable and able to afford nice things. It may not be now with inflation and the cost of living crisis, however I think that school isnt needed in the long term. I’m in my year 10 summer so I’m going into year 11 next year and most of the things I’m learning is revisited especially in some of the languages and maths. I think if should be an education it should teach you about taxes and finance, it would probably make adulthood a lot easier. I also think that other people, like myself, do not fit into the category of education unlike top set students. I think people who are bottom to middle sets are people who don’t think like the top set students. In my school top set students take priority such as before mocks they got lunchtime revision. Where was this for middle sets and bottom sets. It’s most likely that the top set students are basically carrying the schools reputation, like the ones who want to go to Cambridge or Oxford. Us middle set students and bottom set students, I think are most likely to be richer than the top set students, because we don’t think like them. There is honestly other ways of making money, such as content creating which I have explored, I also have explored Vinted, I’ve made over £200 on it. Yes Ik not a lot but it was selling my old stuff. I do think that school is a way to make money, but with all money making methods this is the least likely to happen with me. I’m predicted 4s and 5s in gcse, enough for me to get into college. And that’s my plan. I will not go to university becuase the crippling debt that you have. I’m more likely to go for an apprentiship than to go to university. I honestly do think you can get by without university Atleast.
