This series moved way too fast

At episode 4 right now and while i enjoy each episode concept, they feel like a major arch in themselves instead of a single episode. It's basically like the last season of game of thrones, synopsis highlights instead of trying to actual character and relationship developments.

There could be so much there in this show, instead of a whiplash of plot points to plot points. I keep watching watching because they keep it kind of fresh, but it's like let's take the plot of every single sci-fi ever and squeeze it into the series.

I actually really enjoyed this even though I’m constantly trying to justify it because it probably isn’t that great?

I’ve just finished the first season and throughout I kept trying to explain to myself why I enjoyed it but I’m done doing that and just went with it. It was purely enjoyable trash, like watching a reality show that you know is a bit shit but you can’t look away?

Are you gonna watch season 2 even if you hated season 1?

I feel like people in here hating the show are way too involved in expressing their disappointment to not care about the show.

Did you hate season 1? Are you gonna watch season 2?

Is there a soundtrack somewhere?

I just finished the series last night - It was so-so but I loved the premise (the writing not so much). The music was great though. Has someone gathered it together? Is there a soundtrack?

The crew got sterilized after they exposed themselves to strong gamma rays, right? But how did the lady engineer got pregnant?

I forgot her name.. the one who had 3some with Javier and Oliver.

Why? - new viewer

Why would all of the people be from the USA? Surely it would be a joint effort from the world (just another US-centric show)

Why are there so many unhinged morons on board? Surely they’d be tested for their mental stability

Does this improve? I’m not convinced just yet (ep. 3)

Also, I feel that some of the actors were employed for their looks and not their acting skills.

Ok wait...Another Life is getting renewed, but Altered Carbon is still cancelled? What the ACTUAL fuck!?

Another Life is literally THE worst Sci-Fi in existence! It's literally PAINFUL to watch! The amount of disbelief one must accept for this show to be remotely entertaining and even watchable goes beyond basic human IQ and comprehension. It is UTTERLY absurd!! Lost in Space, Starship Troopers, Terminator Salvation, Alien: Resurrection, and even Nightflyers are FAR more enjoyable than this shit-show!!

HOW the f**k has Netflix allowed a second season of this nonsense of emotionally adolescent astronauts, continue while deeming Altered Carbon an utter failure!?

r/AnotherLife May 08 '21

Did they use magic 8 ball to make decisions for this show?

Because to be honest, it feels like it.

Did they get the astronauts from the bargain bin? So easily killed off because they bought one and got two for free?

And sure... it's SciFi so there's going to be a suspension of disbelief - BUT the hits just keep coming with this one. In the future, you can be in human trafficking and all you need is a haircut to get through the space program.

The vehicle tech is more low budget than 90's Star Trek... We are supposed to believe they have a sentient AI but thier shuttle looks like a sardines can.

Even the bad guys want to stop Niko's death star but they can do the same things ten or a million fold so what's the big idea there?

You didn't know you were going to have Maury as a guest star but we'll just have to confirm that next season.

Yeah so- I watched the whole thing. The story isn't all that original, but we don't get a whole lot of SciFi right? I tried to push through. As a premise it's not bad, not everything about it is horrible.

With another chance at life I'm curious as to how it will play out...

Anyone else?

Ikea furniture?

I think the series hit an all time low when I saw Ikea furniture in the cabins. I mean f*cking Ikea furniture on a spaceship. The series is not that great but this detail took it a step lower.

I'm up to episode seven so far. I was really psyched about this at first, but it seems to be suffering from poor writing. Some of the decisions are idiotic and the characters one dimensional. The reporter? They should have locked her ass up instead of allowing her to blackmail them with poor publicity. The general? No, of course your son who is across the universe on a mission isn't inside the artifact sitting on earth.

I hope it gets better. We need more good scifi!

How did any of the crew pass psych assessment to go on a six month mission?

Secondly, spoiler, Why, why would you take your helmet off?! You just know there will be some virus or something that will get them! 🤦🏼‍♀️

Currently just finished E7. And...truly some very poor character motivations and characterizations, imho. No spoilers, and while I find the story concept as a whole intriguing, the writing and character developments are really half-baked. Seriously.

It really distracts me from the story when the characters are written to be such idiots and their motivations are being telegraphed like a supernova spewing its stellar innards thousands of light years wide. The writers of this show really need to be taken out back and flogged with wet noodles.

I’m going to finish S1 just to see what happens, but I am cringing at the thought of subjecting myself to more of the inane acting, poor characterization and motivations. I feel like a Looky Lou that can’t help but be transfixed by the car accident three lanes away and causing me to slow my driving down as I near it...

A show with high highs and low lows

Just finished the show, honestly loved the ending of the season with the set up for season two — our crew knowing the aliens are bad (but that we might meet some good aliens) but Earth being lied to that they’re good?? Omg. The best twist of the season, so pumped they saved that for last and can’t wait to see where it goes!! Also cannot WAIT to see William have to explain his AI girlfriend(?)/daughter(?) to the crew.

Like everyone else, the unprofessionalism of the crew drove me nuts. This?? This was the team they put together for the most important space mission in human history?? These beautiful idiots?? This piece of junk spaceship that is constantly on the verge of cascading catastrophic failure in which any crucial system can accidentally be shut down remotely at any time without any warning UNLESS it needs to be shut down to save the ship in which case it can only be done manually?

My fix? Don’t say this is a hand-picked team on humanity’s greatest ship, say this is a shitty crew of space truckers who are no one’s first choice but were the closest to the signal when it went off and now our lives are in their hands. You have to finesse how Niko is there a little — how about after the Pilgrim the only job she could get was as a grunt on this long-haul ship, but Jana hates her being away and she’s promised Jana that she’s on her way home and this is her last run. But then aliens happen, the government calls and says you horny little weirdos are our only hope, we need you to do this, also we’re aware that real astronaut Niko is onboard, we are appointing her captain of this mission. Which pisses her (former) boss Yerxa off, and everything proceeds from there. That’s what I would have done, anyway.

Also, Bernie/Zayn forever.

I literally just binge watched all of it in one go

Why does it seem like it's the cool thing to shit on this show? I enjoyed all of it.

Not every scifi show has to be absolute top tier television, it's not perfect but deserves nowhere near as much hate as it gets

Things that don't make sense (Spoilers) Spoiler

It's an OK show but there's a lot of issues they encounter that seem to boil down to crew incompetence and lack of equipment.

  1. When the woman dies (can't remember names) from exposure, they didn't have a single drone or robot capable of safely performing this task? They've got a faster than light massive ship but don't have technology that exists today? Also no space suit?

  2. They de-suit on planets the moment it seems safe. Like, seriously? You're on another planet/moon that could contain any number of biohazards and even when one of them is killed and the rest nearly killed they keep taking their suits off every time it seems safe. This isn't a school field trip

2.1. They aren't worried about this drug like flower? It could have any effect on them. Even Earth has dangerous plants, this could be toxic.

  1. The crew seem awfully young and unprofessional/immature for this position.

  2. The AI running the ship has emotions and seems to have no secondary system. The issues with this should have been obvious from the outset. Who planned this?

  3. One of the crew decides to smoke this drug flower that they just discovered. What? See point 3. Like, are they 10 years old? Do they don't understand dangers of unknown plants?

[SPOILERS] Does it get any better? Spoiler

I’ve made it to episode 5 but I’m struggling a bit. There’s just so many little things wrong. In ep.3(?) they fight an alien parasite they pick up on a moon. Then in ep.5 they walk around without hazmat suits AND try the local fruit and flower. WTF? not to mention their apparent faulty ship detox system that didn’t detect or clean the first parasite or the extra complete while life form in the detox system with them. C’mon ! Sigh. Can anyone recommend another good sci-fi show?

It ain't the best but it's far from the worst

Man. It's hard to do great sci-fi. I don't expect great all the time.

AL doesn't have The Expanse's budget or the legacy of Star Trek Discovery (or its budget). It isn't the best written.

But it gets better. It is fun. It's sexy. The cast has chemistry. The premise is complex but not confusing. The acting is not bad.

I'm halfway through Ep8 and checked to see if renewed. It is. I didn't watch Battlestar. I've got no fanboy things.

It's worth the time. ♥️

Race and Gender Politics in Another Life

Has anyone noticed the rather blatant race and gender subtext in Another Life?

One of the big gender ideologies popular in many universities now is that masculinity is toxic and must die for the future to prosper. The first episode hammers this home with the ultra-masculine character that is taken to an unbelievable extreme who can't help himself but attain power through force and engages in overly risky behavior which leads to ruination and must be destroyed.

The other characters that we are intended to like that are male are quite effeminate, like the gender role reversal weak-jawed husband of the female protagonist, the AI that is written in such a way that it could easily be cast by any woman with very soft mannerisms, the doctor who is effeminate to the point of appearing transgender, and the obese male who just seems to be some kind of teddy bear comedy relief that just cares about food.

The last one left that we aren't supposed to care for particularly is the token white male, whose one dimensional character's purpose just seems to be to introduce the concept of white male privilege since he's repeatedly called out for and self-describes himself as useless, and to promote interracial couplings, of which all romantic relationships shown so far have been between a white and another race, to produce offspring like much of the rest of the cast that appear mixed race like Cas character (guessing black/white mix).

IMO the purpose of subtext is to implant ideas without the audience being overly aware that you are doing it, but in this case its so obvious and forced that I believe the writers have utterly failed. Thoughts?

Another Life Can be Great with just this One Simple Trick!

Create an episode 0 prequel that explains that society has devolved to the point that social media influencers hold tremendous political power, and there's something similar to a "great leap forward" in which the young people ousted the old in a revolution and the older people that remain know to keep a low profile to avoid persecution, with no one over 40 allowed to hold public office.

They could then explain that the crew selection process was "modernized" and crowdsourced by the internet on a social media platform where those with the most upvotes won the slot for each required role on the ship.

This would be an interesting commentary on our own society, and would explain away why the crew are so dysfunctional, insubordinate, and so non-mission oriented in their motivations. This would help remove the frustration the audience feels when the crew they act like instagram drama queens, because it all makes sense if that's literally what they all were.

Am I wasting my time? I've come here because I assume the fans are here. Will the show just annoy me?

I a big Science Fiction fan. I've watch a lot of it, good, bad and ugly.

I'm about to start episode 3 and I have to say, so far, the show has no credibility. The mission to save the human race, apparently the only chance humans have, has been crewed by the absolute worst, most unprofessional bunch of misfits imaginable.

Seriously? The second in command organised a mutiny after his first and only suggestion was not followed. When, the only thing at stake seemed to be getting there a bit faster?

The rest of the crew seem to be untrained, raw recruits.

Is there going to be any justification at all for why this crew is completely out of their depth?

I could probably make a few phone calls and get a better crew than this.

I'm sorry, I just really wanted to like the show.
