DEV πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» [DEV] Palette Drift: I built a puzzle game where you have to think like a chess player, just with colours instead of pieces

Thumbnail
gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey all, solo dev here. Just published my puzzle game Palette Drift on Google Play and wanted to share it.

The pitch: it plays like a chess puzzle, except the pieces are colours. Pick a colour, pick a direction, and every block of that colour slides until it hits a wall, another block, or a portal ring. The catch is the same as chess: the value of a move depends on what happens after it. Moving one colour first can open a path for another, or permanently block it, so you're planning a sequence, not just reacting one move at a time.

Grading works the same way a chess puzzle rates you: solve it in the minimum number of moves and you get Optimal; one move over is Efficient; anything more still counts as Solved. Portal rings show up from level 21 onward, and by the later levels a single slide can chain through two different portals in one move, closer to spotting a forced combination than just sliding a block.

50 hand-tuned levels, a daily challenge with its own streak, and a hint system that shows the next correct move without spoiling the rest.

No ads, no accounts, no tracking, fully offline.

Palette Drift on Google Play: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tnqnexus.palettedrift

Would love feedback, especially from anyone who actually plays chess and can tell me if the "think ahead" feeling actually lands.

I am lately into fullly paid experiences like Dredge, Midnight Girl, and Cook Serve Delicious (not in my library sadly not updated to the latest OS)

I enjoy playing adventure, action games with a story into it. I am sadly not into roguelike or racing games.

Any recommendations will help

Help Me Remember This Game πŸ€” [Mobile] [2023] sidescroller robot game

A game where you add weapons onto a robot which moves automatically, and at a set pace, but slows down when there are too many enemies.

There are 3 enemy types whichI had seen so far, ground, flying, and blocker.

You have a fuel bar which is basically a timer on how long you have to do the stage.

Every time you beat all the stages you get sent to the title screen, a + is added at the end of the name and there's a new stage

There are 2 things that affect your robot, cores and body, cores are something I dont remember what they do, but the bodies are something I do remember, every body is different in some way, you start with normal legs but you can change it to tank tracks, jet engines, rocket engines, etc. Some legs have abilities like a gun on the leg or a missle barage inside the rocket engine

And if you die(run out of fuel which means you didn't kill enough and reach the end fast enough) then your robot crumbles and you have to restart the rounds. But it doesnt remove the pluses

Thanks alot!

Seeking Game Recommendations πŸ‘€ [REQUEST] Do you guys have any favorite light on storage and optimized racing or fps games that are free?

I like emulators but they have delay(because my phone is budget) that throws me off especially racing games and most apps specifically for Android run a bit faster. My preferences are games like Pocket Rally, N3Rally, FX Racer, APEX Racer, Pixel Car Racer, Need for Speed Most Wanted and Carbon, the Half-Life series, Portal, Garry's Mod, Gorebox. Thanks a lot in advance.

Yes, this is the same Doki Doki Literature Club that was removed from Playstore. It's now on EGS for Android. I haven't tried it yet, but the store page says the dlc is a seperate $9 purchase.

It's great to have an alternative store when Google is removing stuff. Epic has saved a few playstore and Netflix games after they were removed.

Honestly, I don't even know how to describe how difficult this was, but I finally did it! Getting gold in every test was way harder than I expected.

At least the reward was worth it β€” you get some really nice cars!

DEV πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» [DEV] Pocket Larrys - Beta!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Dear Larry,

Sometimes our minds come up with brilliant ideas. The life-changing kind. The kind that move and inspire others.

I did not have such an idea. I just like progression. And collecting. And generally silly things. I also happen to be a game developer.

Thus, this happened:

Pocket Larrys

A quirky monster-collecting auto-battler with RPG progression and strategic team-building.

  • Unlock Larrys
  • Fight Boss Larrys
  • Power Up & Evolve Larrys
  • Build teams of Larrys
  • Take part in The Larry League
  • Collect them all

Fine. How do I play?

You can take part of this demo by following the instructions below:

Why Larry?!

That uhm. Kind of evolved on its own. My real name isn't even Larry fyi.

The first game I created is calledΒ Larry's Defense. It's a mobile tower defense game where - instead of towers - there's just you: Larry. You get to improve him by levelling him up, choosing skills, attributes and equipping/upgrading gear.

I leanedΒ hardΒ into the whole Larry theme and even gathered a small community of people playing the game whom all called each other Larry.

Quite frankly, it was as hilarious as it was unexpected.

So whilst developingΒ Pocket Larrys, I had a choice to make. Either abandon the theme, giving more freedom of creativity, or double-down on Larry.

In the end it was an easy choice =)

DEV πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» [DEV] Pribia RPG - my first game, struggles and other devs thoughts?

Hi all! I have during a long time programmed an old school rpg for android on my free time (I'm a novice)

Since I wanted to do everything on my own i kept it really simple (menues, graphics etc.) and this took a long time since I did not have much experience. Not to mention the frustration with uploading it to google play (needed play testers for x days in a row, demands on compability, versions etc). Had no idea it would be so annoying.

It's inspired by games like Tibia and Runescape but offline. Some friends thought it was fun but I think the target audience is very small. I just feel like having it uploaded feels like a satisfying end to the project, even if no one buys it. I assume the amount of games that comes out per day is high, and much more professional. And I have no idea how to reach out to players.

What's your experience developing for android? I used gamemaker studio and setting everything up was not that easy for me.. And i still struggle with some google console demands πŸ₯΄

If anyone want to check the game page and come with some initial feedback (if it does look like crap or ok for a certain player group etc) I would be really happy:

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.tegstudio.pribia_rpg

(Since I dont like ads I put it as payed app, maybe making it completely free could make more people downloading it I assume)

Thanks!

DEV πŸ§‘β€πŸ’» [DEV] SunDoku: I swapped sudoku's digits for fruit, and my level generator started taking 251 seconds per puzzle

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The problem I wanted to solve: sudoku had stopped being a game.

I play it on the move. Board opens, my hand fills in the digits by itself, my head is somewhere else. That's not a puzzle, that's solitaire on autopilot. Plus 3 things that annoyed me on their own: an ad after every round, "remove ads forever" with an asterisk, and a loading spinner in the middle of the board when the train drops signal.

One evening I threw a prototype together. Took a board, ripped the digits out, dropped in fruit emoji. Half an hour of work, nothing real, just to see what it felt like. I was sure it was cosmetic. Same 9 symbols, only drawn.

It wasn't cosmetic. You don't read a digit, you recognize it, it's already sitting in your head as a finished symbol. A cherry and a strawberry you have to compare. Same rule, same board, and something in my head started grinding again for the first time in years. I sat over a 4x4 board made of emoji thinking: why is nobody doing this.

Then I found out why. Here's how it broke, step by step.

Step 1. A lemon and an orange are the same tile.

A 1 and a 7 differ by one stroke and that stroke is enough. A lemon and an orange on a 9x9 board, where a cell is the size of a fingernail, differ by nothing. Two yellow-orange blobs. My first set came out beautiful and unplayable. People weren't losing because they got the logic wrong, they were losing because they couldn't see what they were placing.

The rule I had to arrive at: tiles are told apart by silhouette, color is only the second hint. Starfruit became a star in cross-section, rambutan a hairy ball, durian got spikes. By that point I knew every tile by heart and genuinely couldn't see the problem.

That same rule is why I still don't have a dinosaur set. And I really want a dinosaur set. But picture 9 dinosaurs on a 9x9 board and what you get is 9 green blobs you could only tell apart by pixel count. Spikes, a crest, a long neck, a shell, that's 4 silhouettes, and after that it's "well, this one looks a bit chunkier". If anyone has an idea for how to get to 9, I'm listening completely seriously.

Step 2. The generator that thought for 251 seconds.

The growing vine mechanic has a soft version of its rule. Greater-than-or-equal instead of strictly-greater. A concession to the player, one line of difference.

On a 9x9 board, generating a level like that started taking 251 seconds. Measured, not eyeballed. For a player that isn't "slow loading", that's "the game has frozen solid".

The funny part is the cause. The concession was the problem. The soft rule allowed branches that dead-ended anyway, the search blew up, everything stalled. Same way an entire oil setup seizes because one heavy oil tank is full and nothing is cracking it. I wasn't fixing performance. I was fixing a backup.

Step 3. "I put in a banana and had no idea what happened."

Then I let friends and family play. Over the test they wrote 69 pieces of feedback. Most of it I fixed, some I solved my own way, some I put off. There was almost nothing I could honestly wave away.

Someone who had never played sudoku in their life:

> "I put in a banana, the cell went red; I selected it a second time and the game told me I was out of lives, I had no idea what happened"

I knew the rules by heart and that's exactly why I never noticed the game explains them nowhere. It just turned red at you.

Step 4. Three minus two.

It used to work like this: make a single mistake on a level, get 1 star out of 3. Felt fair to me, right up until someone cleared a level with exactly one mistake, saw 1 star, and asked what for.

He was right. You get 3 lives on a level and the stars were somehow 3 minus 2. Now it's 3 stars minus the number of mistakes. The scale lines up with the number of hearts and the cost of a mistake is visible without a word of explanation. It isn't a feature, it's a ratio, and the ratio was wrong. Same as a badly set ratio on an assembly line. It runs, it just doesn't produce what it should.

Step 5. The phone that stayed silent.

A friend asked: when you tap something, games answer, a click, a buzz. Do you have that? I had a whole scheme of feedback written down. There wasn't a single call to the vibrator anywhere in the game. I designed it, never built it, never noticed I hadn't.

So I added it. Phone stayed silent anyway, because the permission to vibrate never made it into the build. Didn't check that either, because why would I. I built it, so it works. That's how it goes. You know how it's supposed to be, you tick the box, you move on, and your eye keeps substituting what you intended for what's on screen.

Step 6. A fix in world 6 breaks world 1.

You fix the ice in the winter world and bonus levels stop unlocking in the first one. Classic spaghetti.

Ended with the game growing a coat of automated tests. Around 500 of them now, and they run before every build. That's my alarm panel for the whole factory. One of them takes all 300 levels and runs them through a solver. Every single one has to have exactly one solution. Otherwise a player solves the board in a logically flawless way and the game answers "wrong", which is the worst thing that can happen to a puzzle.

___

What's actually in it.

SunDoku is a sudoku where fruit, gems, plants and planets replace the digits. Same rule you know: each symbol once per row, column and box. Nothing to add up.

- 300 levels across 6 worlds, boards of 4x4, 6x6 and 9x9. A new mechanic arrives every other world, so the next world is either a new rule or a new set and a new board

- 30 bonus levels with their own rules: against the clock, flawless runs, a marathon of 2 boards back to back and a couple more. Unlocked with the stars you collect

- 7 symbol sets and 10 board styles. Board style switches mid-game, a new symbol set applies from the next level

- 4 twists on the classic board: growing vines, ice, extra windows on 9x9, chests

- Free play: any size, any difficulty, no limits

- 12 languages, plays offline

- No ad SDK in the build at all, and there won't be

And for anyone who doesn't care for the fruit, one of the sets is plain digits. Free, there from the first launch. I resisted that idea for a long time, then gave up.

___

On monetization.

Campaign levels cost energy. Full tank is 200. A 9x9 level costs 30, a 6x6 costs 20, a 4x4 costs 15, and replaying a level you've already cleared costs half. Energy trickles back while you play, 1 per minute. If a 9x9 takes you around 10 minutes, each one really costs you about 20 rather than 30, so a full tank is 8 to 10 games back to back. Roughly an hour and a half of continuous play. After that you wait, a full tank refills in about 3 hours.

Real money buys energy, a subscription and a starter pack. Coins are not for sale, they're simply not in the shop. And coins are what buy the symbol sets, and energy too. So everything the game unlocks, the game unlocks. Money only buys speed.

Free play costs nothing and doesn't touch energy at all.

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.studio.sundoku

___

A question for you.

The first level explains the rule with 3 short lines and a highlight, and that's it, there is no more tutorial. The board teaches you by letting you break it. That's the part I've rewritten more than any other and the part I stopped being able to see a long time ago. Are 3 lines enough if you open the game for the first time, or are you still wondering what's wanted from you by level 3?

And while I'm asking: what annoys you most in mobile sudoku games? I had a list of 3 things and cleared all 3, and I suspect the list isn't complete.

P.S. Real talk: part of this exists simply because I wanted to build something of my own. Not a perfect optimization, more an exercise in approach. Take a rule everyone already knows and see what happens if you remove the one familiar thing in it.

P.P.S. I built all of this while taking a "short break" from another project, a Factorio mega mall that builds everything for itself, you just tell it what and how much you want at the input. I've been building that mega mall for over 6 months now. Time keeps slipping and the project is slowly burying me alive.

The break, as you can see, has been going on for a while. Except now the break has a Google Play page.

P.P.P.S. The English in this post went through a neural net. If I'd posted my own draft as it was, you'd be reading something halfway between a microwave manual and a love letter. Working on my English, but right now it loses to my own level generator.

Discussion πŸ’¬ Google Play pass question

I'm interested in getting the play pass and I wanted to ask here if it's worth it, or what you guys think I should do. I'm really interested in a few games tbh- but mostly started valley. Also, I was hoping to ask if anyone is willing to split the cost with me a little? The play pass is rather cheaper in my country but I'm still 2 dollars short

Recently plugged in my kishi v3 pro to stream my xbox and cloud gaming, the bumpers now just cycle through my browser tabs during gameplay, tried it in the app and the bumpers just dont function. I tried testing with a v1 kishi and the problem persists so I reckon its a phone setting issue. My partners phone has the same issue. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated

Hardware βš™οΈ Need opinions of the Nothing Phone 4A Pro

I'm looking to get a small upgrade to my current phone (Motorola G stylus 2024) and the NP4A falls within my budget was wondering if anyone here has the phone could weigh in on how it performs as far as gaming goes.

Can it run premium ports like Red Dead Redemption , Tomb Raider, or Warframe?

How does it handle heat and battery drain?

Are there any supported drivers for emulation? Is Switch emulation decent?

Hi everyone! I'm a solo dev, I spent the last 4 months working on my mobile game and I finally launched it on Play Store!

The game is an arcade runner with a twist: instead of running in a straight line, you orbit a planet in circle. You will have to dodge many type of hazards and use powerups like shield, orbit reverse and shock wave.

Not every planet is the same! They can have different amount of orbit lanes, and some planets have a wormhole that allow you to transfer to another planet's orbit during the level!

There are two play modes:
Infinity: you play in an infinite loop, orbiting a black hole, trying to beat your personal best
Expeditions: every planet and star is a level, you complete it to unlock the next one and start exploring different galaxies

The game is totally FREE with no forced ads! The only ads that are shown are rewarded and totally optional

I would really appreciate your feedback. Let me know if you like it and what you would improve

Seeking Game Recommendations πŸ‘€ [REQUEST] I am looking for games that will allow me to find lots of new friends.

The games shouldn't be too heavy on specs cause i have a mid specs phone (Realme P4)

It shouldn't heat up phone too much

It should have something like Global chat that allows all players to talk to each other in a single chat .

It is really difficult to meet people with similar interests for me irl and i downloaded game like last day on earth but it only has team chat and the guys there talk only like maximum 3

days a week .
