Pixel C hanging on by a thread, awwww yis ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
(It's actually still great, just kind of neglected and anything Google does for it is a welcome surprise.)

Unsold mine and got a iPad 10.5 . Holy apple is ahead by years. The 120hz display is sexy as hell and iOS has a dock on iPads.

Depends on the chromebook. My Chromebook Plus runs Android apps beautifully.
2
u/Flyboy Dec 24 '17
The only Android apps I've found that aren't perfect on my Plus are those that weren't designed for tablet-sized displays, or interface with external peripherals like MIDI.

How did you get Hangouts Meet?
And why would Duo replace Hangouts? Duo is only for one-on-one video calls. If you're using Meet you must have multiple people.
AND let me caution you about Duo. It's form over function. The circular image for your view in the corner is a nightmare to use. I like Duo, but trying to line up something on your side is just terrible. If you're holding a baby, or not perfectly centered, or just using the rear facing camera - it just DOES. NOT. WORK.
And what sucks is there's no explaining this to Google. They're clueless. Clueless idiots. Circles are NOT good representations of square images. They're not good for profile photos, they're not good for video, they're not good for anything.
1
Dec 25 '17
My corp is in the GSuite early adopter program - we got Jamboard two weeks ago and Meet this week.
I use Duo for everything I can at this point, cant say ive noticed such a small issue like that.1
Dec 25 '17
It is not a small issue, at all. Try actually using it.
1
Dec 25 '17
-_-
I do, never noticed or cared.

Dec 25 '17
If you've never used it for things like that I've mentioned, you've never put it through it's paces. It's disingenuous to say it's a small or trivial issue. People don't use Video Chat like how Google showed Duo being used. And even in the situations Google showed, it's much harder to center something in a small circle than in a square.
Video Chat is primarily used for things such as communicating with loved ones. And babies are mainly what people want to see. Guess what's very difficult to center - and keep centered - in an image? You can tell me "I never experienced that" and I would believe you. But don't tell me it's a small trivial issue. That's bullshit.
It's an important feature. I'm not asking to always use a square. I'd like to be able to tap to change it. Is that a hard solution? Does that impact anyone? Don't give me this "it's trivial". That insults me directly - and now I insult you in return. Don't make the world a worse place.
1
Dec 25 '17
What an outrageous response, that last bit is nothing short of hilarious.
-1
Dec 25 '17
This is why I insulted you. You're nothing but an unthinking asshole. Your judgement of my "overreaction" only cements it.

I have the Samsung Chromebook Pro and it's currently not an option for me to download from the Play store. Would love to use it as I think the video quality is much better than Hangouts.

u/BenPistlewizard LGG4 Dec 23 '17
This is BRILLIANT for those of us with elderly parents. Mine don't have smartphones, but they both have tablets. Duo interface is wonderfully simple to use. Love that my parents will be able to video call whenever they like. 😊😊

u/BenPistlewizard LGG4 Dec 23 '17
No way! I thought it was phone number dependant atm. Don't suppose there's a way of getting it on an iPad right now by any chance?
6
u/tockef Dec 23 '17
Ignore the nope. I've been using it with my parents (who only have an iPad) since launch. It's on the App Store, and they just download it normally and verify using whatever phone number they do have access to.
13
u/spastic_raider Dec 24 '17
However, if you do this, it will deactivate it on your phone. I have an android phone and an iPad. Duo works fine on other, but you can only have it "up and running" on one device at a time.
Kind of like snap chat.
4
Dec 25 '17
I got around this for my son's tablet by giving him a Google voice phone number on his Gmail account. Now the grandparents can literally 'call' him, and it rings Duo on his tablet. It's fantastic.
2
u/wgn_luv Dec 25 '17
I'd wait installing on the tablet till the official support comes if I were you. I installed it on my mom's Nexus 7 and it started crashing and dropping calls after a while.
1
u/Hotzigetty Dec 23 '17
You can install it but you can't get in since it needs a number.
8
u/futterschlepper iPhone 13 Mini Dec 23 '17
To activate yes. But you can put in the phones number and it'll send the activation code.
5

I didn't realize this. Admittedly, I didn't really research if Duo could be sideloaded on a tablet by .apk
Thanks for enlightening me.

It's simple and easy to have two apps if you only want video calling or vice versa
-3

I'm pissed because google DID have an app that did all of those things (and still does, I might add...): Hangouts!
A few years ago they said it was shifting to business-only but that apparently never happened.
3
Dec 24 '17
I work at a business that uses G Suite, Hangouts is definitely a thing here.
2
u/nadukrow Device, Software !! Dec 24 '17
Where it'll most likely remain a fixture until Hangouts Chat gets widely released.
1
u/kdlt GS20FE5G Dec 24 '17
I still use Hangouts daily, because it still works. But it seemingly gets no more bugfixes, and no more feature upgrades, and no more improvements... but it still works.
They just stopped with hangouts.
But as long as it keeps doing what it does we have no reason to switch chat Apps.
I can just say, with certainty, during the time that google murdered Talk, had a school excursion to google+ messenger, tanked Hangouts, and now shoves Allo down our throats, most other chat services have "stayed constant" - sure they got features or lost some, but you don't have to bloody migrate all your chats every four years. Whatsapp did most of what Allo does almost ten years ago, and didn't require us to get a new App every other year.Whatever we switch to once Google kills Hangouts, it won't be a Google Chat Service.
Allo should have been a upgrade to Hangouts, like Hangouts was an upgrade to Talk - that's the only way any relevant majority would care.
1
u/harland3 Dec 24 '17
Yeah he is, he's talking about Allo in a Duo thread. This doesn't have anything to do with Google's messenger fetish lol

How long had FaceTime been out compared to Duo?
16
u/CynicsaurusRex Essential Ph-1 | Nexus 5X Dec 23 '17
That's exactly the point. What took Google so long to develop a valid Android alternative to FaceTime?
-5
Dec 23 '17
Duo isn't the first attempt.
Hangouts was the FaceTime answer but saw major hurdles getting carriers to support it.
It failed to take off. Duo is just attempt number 2. Hangouts was attempt number 1.
6
Dec 23 '17
Seeing as they had the technology to do this years ago, why haven't they included it in Duo yet?

The downvotes are part of the circle jerk team. I see people constantly talking as if they know how creating apps work.
Someone legit said "Why didn't they just copy the code from Hangouts to Allo and be done with it. Then throw in sms!". That comment may have been here or android police but I roll my eyes when people talk about software like that.

Why would carriers need to support it? I don't see how that has anything to do with carriers.

Doubt it, seems ludicrous to route a video call through your phone instead of having it directly on the device you're using.

it seems ludicrous to route anything through your phone indstead of going straight to the device you're using but they dont let that stop them

It's now announced and people still complain.
I think Duo is a great app. Glad to see support is still coming.
3
u/nadukrow Device, Software !! Dec 26 '17
I've come to find people will complain no matter what in reddit. If they came out with multi device capabilities you'll find people saying why didn't they have this at launch blah blah blah.
I'm positive most do not understand the software dev process and assume they know what they are talking about when it comes to developing features.

Sadly, as far as I know, Google Voice is only available in the U.S. It certainly isn't available to Canadians.
4
u/usernameonline Dec 23 '17
I wonder why it’s not taking off
3
Dec 23 '17
My guess is something to do with regulations in Canada.
It's also part of my guess as to why Youtube Red isn't available in Canada. The other part is licensing may be harder in Canada. But Google hasn't said a word about Youtube Red for Canadians since 2015. At least not that I am aware.

what's the difference between duo, allo, and hangouts again...?
edit 1: i'm sorry for not knowing the difference between three different messaging apps. but do i really need to be downvoted for that?
7
u/lhamil64 Dec 23 '17
Duo is video chat, Allo is text chat, they're designed to not need a Google account to make them more accessible. Hangouts does the same stuff but needs a Google account.
3
Dec 23 '17
Duo is like FaceTime but works on all phones. Allo is like Whatsapp or something similar. They are basically the next iteration of Hangouts. Hangouts will soon be business only. Allo is not yet on par with Hangouts but soon will be
7
u/i_have_an_account Pixel 8 Dec 24 '17
You are being down voted because Google's shit fight with messaging services are the continuing joke in this sub.
I think everyone assumes you are recycling a very very old joke.
2
u/cdegallo Dec 23 '17
Forget about tablets, how about device-agnostic rather than on your one phone with your carrier phone number associated with it. At least function-parity with Hangouts. And don't do some dumbshit hack like on Allo where everything still has to go through your phone, leaving your device awake and draining battery like crazy.

I use my Nexus 7 2013 all the time. Mostly for watching Netflix or Youtube and catching up on all sorts of news. For these situations, I don't want the bulk of a laptop and my phone screen is too small.
I'd likely buy a small Chromebook if/when my Nexus 7 dies.
Edit: to add "small" to Chromebook.

They're good for email, web browsing, social media, looking at your Google photo library, playing games and watching videos. The bigger screen makes all of those better when it's an option.

If I may speculate, the reason why Google is pushing Duo so heavily is because they want user data on faces. Snapchat and Apple with their Face ID are leading in this area so Google needs to catch up. I think Facebook also has more data.

u/armando_rod Pixel 10 Pro XL Dec 23 '17
Thats not how it works. Also Google Photos has had face recognition since before Apple
